Caitlin had fallen asleep sometime during the morning hours having watched over him as long as she could. It put her mind at rest and ease as well to know that she seemed to have done some good for her pirate Captain. Before she drifted off into her dreams, her body shifted closer to his, resting her head against his shoulder next to her hand.
Sometime later, James was the first one to wake, his eyes opened looking towards the velvet canopy that stretched over the top of the bed. He’d not slept that well in so long the feeling of waking up refreshed was foreign to him. He could feel warm breath against his arm, and his eyes shifted before turning his head to look. It hadn’t been a dream; Caitlin was still there lying beside him as she’d promised the night before. She was perhaps the most beautiful sight that he’d ever awoken to in all of his years.
“My sweet angel of mercy.” He whispered gently, a small smile creasing his lips as his eyes wondered over her face. James realized that it must have taken a lot for her to do what she’d done for him last night. Knowing that as strong as she seemed on the outside, she must have been shaking and terrified on the inside. She’d been witness to his raging temper that was even turned on her more then once, and she had no way of knowing if it would have rained down on her again.
Thinking for a moment, a larger smile crossed his lips as he looked at her. Carefully moving his body over so as not to disturb her, he pulled a blanket up over her to keep her warm so that the absence of his heat would not wake her. He grinned having an idea that he wanted to push into motion and get ready before she rose from her slumber.
A few hours later, he returned to his Cabin after making a few arrangements. Looking around he found Caitlin still asleep on the bed, and he smiled to himself. It seemed as if she too was getting a good rest. Walking over he crawled up on the bed laying over her as he looked down to her face, “Caitlin . . . . wake up my beauty.” He said gently placing gentle kiss to her forehead. He couldn’t help but chuckle to himself knowing what he had in store for them this day.
Caitlin’s eyes fluttered open slowly as she looked up at him, “Did I fall asleep?” She whispered looking up at him, her mind was only half working just coming out of sleep, “James is something wrong? Are you alright?”
Hook really couldn’t suppress the grin; she was absolutely charming when she first woke. “No, no nothing is wrong . . . but you must get up and get dressed. I have a surprise for you.” He said looking down at her seeing the look in her eyes that seemed like her mind was trying to wake up and understand what he said to her at the same time. He just chuckled again, “Come on my little Angel, you can not sleep your whole life away.” Kissing her cheek, he moved to sit up pulling her to sit up with him, “There is a boat waiting to take us to shore.” He said looking at her, trying to get her to wake up the rest of the way and rejoin the human race.
Her brow furrowed as she looked at him, “But we’re on a boat.” He paused a moment at her words. That was a strange response, the sort of response he would expect from someone who had indulged a bit far into a rum bottle. He looked at her in disbelief.
“No, we are on a ship. A boat is what takes us to shore because we are not shallow on the draft and cannot get any closer to the island.” He saw the look in her eyes that said with his explanation he’d lost her. He just chuckled and shook his head, “Just get dressed and trust me love.” He stood, pulling the blanket back before taking her legs and pulling them over the side of the bed. Taking her hand he pulled her up to stand, to anxious to let her get fully awake or risk her falling back to sleep.
He took her over to her closet and opened the door shooing her inside, she walked into it and he started to close the door but remembered something, “Oh . . . .and Caitlin . . . make sure your undergarments are not to elaborate today.” He said before closing the door. She’d woken up a bit more and that caught her ears, she turned and looked at the door wondering why on earth that would be important.
30 minutes later she emerged from the closet closing the door behind her. Just in time for James to come back into the Cabin. “Are you ready?” He inquired looking her over, she’d picked out a simple yet very pleasing to the eye dress that glorified her womanly figure.
“I’m not sure what I’m ready for, but yes. I’m as ready as I can be.” He smiled picking up a black cloak with a huge hood, made of velvet and gold trim with a satin lining. He wrapped it about her shoulders so she would keep warm and kissed her cheek.
“Well there is surely only one way to find out, is there not?” He took her hand as they headed out of the Cabin, walking down the stairs to the main deck. She’d not left the ship since they had come to Neverland, it felt strange knowing that she was about to set foot off it for the first time. The crewmen helped her down into the boat and Hook followed after, sitting beside her in the back. Slowly they rowed into shore. Caitlin didn’t say anything; her eyes just remained on the spit of land that she’d seen from afar, with great curiosity.
Hook just smiled to himself as he watched her. There were times when she seemed so childlike. As she did now, her eyes glowing with curiosity and wonder, trusting James with all her heart not once thinking he was leading her into danger. He was very glad of this, for he would never intentionally put her in harms way, or risk her well being.
Once on shore, hook got out of the boat first before reaching and taking her hand helping her onto the land. She lost her balance and started to fall but the Captain caught her in his arms and chuckled. “You have been on the Jolly Rodger for weeks my dear, It could be a little while before you find your land legs again. Perhaps you had better hold on to me to steady yourself.” He said with a smile offering his arm for her to take.
“James, . . .” She started looking around growing a little nervous before looking back up at him, “what are we doing here?” Hook looked into her eyes at the sound of her tone, was it possible she was frightened to be away from the ship?
He ran the tip of a finger down her nose, “Patients my love. Patients.” He said with a smile as he began to lead her down a path. Caitlin looked at him for a moment and nodded; before her eyes began to wonder over the strange surroundings they walked through. She moved closer to him, remembering stories she’d heard from the crew when she was out on deck during the day.
The two pirates that accompanied them carried lanterns to light there path as it was growing dark, they both managed to sleep most of the day away. It seemed like forever they walked until they came to what looked like a large pile of rocks. Two other pirates where already there, having been sent ahead to carry a few things with them. Caitlin looked around wondering what was going on, hoping that he’d remembered his wedding vow of not doing away with her when he got bored of her.
James reached over taking one of the lanterns from the men with his Iron claw, then took Caitlin’s hand walking around the large formation of rocks, leaving the other pirates behind. They came to a hidden and very obscure entrance that was only large enough for one person bent over to crawl into. Hook turned and smiled at her, releasing her hand as he entered first disappearing from sight. Caitlin stood there alone looking about wondering what on earth was going on. Her eyes turned back to the opening as James voiced called out to her, “Caitlin? Come on, don’t be frightened.”
She swallowed and followed into the dark looking entrance slowly and carefully. When she came out the other side she was surprised to find they had entered a cathedral like underground cave that was lit up quite brightly as if my starlight. Her eyes went wide as she stepped forward and looked down hearing running water. There were glowing crystals all about the cavern, stuck into the walls and down in the large pool of water there were more crystals that glowed brightly under the surface. “What is this place James?” She whispered, her voice full of awe and wonderment.
James smiled as he looked at her, loving the way her eyes seemed to shine from beneath her hooded cloak. “The lights you see are diamonds my dear. The original plan when we found this place was to dig them up and take them all.” He said his own eyes wondering about the cavern, “But as you can well imagine, there was not really much point to do so.” Reaching out he took her hand, “Come on.” Hook took her down the pathway that led to the lower level where the very large pool of water was. There was steam rising from the water, which seemed strange to her, for water only did that when it was warmer then the air.
Curiously she walked up next to it, reaching down putting her hand in the pool, furrowing her brow she looked up at James, “This water is so warm.” She said a little confused.
He couldn’t help but chuckle at her a bit, “Of course it is. Have you never heard of an underground hot spring before?” Her eyes shifted back to the water a moment as she withdrew her hand. He walked up next to her taking her hand and pulling her to him, “I do recall the other day, hearing someone say they would give anything to be able to have a full bath in something other then ice cold sea water. Did I not?”
She looked up at him, how on earth did he hear her say that? She thought he had been sleeping. “Well . . . . I mean yes of course I did . . . but. . .” She grew quiet for a moment looking around before leaning closer and whispering, “is it safe?”
“There is only one entrance in and out of this cave, I left my men standing guard so that we do not have any unexpected visitors, and the water is to warm for any creature to live within it. Everything is perfectly safe and you have nothing to fear.” Reaching up swiping away the few locks of her golden red curls from her face. “That is . . . if you can swim well enough.” He said with a grin.
She smiled a little looking up at him, “Will . . . you be joining me as well?” She questioned as she reached up pushing the hood back from her head letting it fall to her shoulders.
“That depends, entirely on you my darling wife.” She smiled a bit more, as a chill that always crept up her spine crept once more at the sound of his calling her ‘wife’.
Reaching up and grasping his hat and removing it as she looked into his eyes, “I think I would like it very much if you were to join me, my handsome husband.” He chuckled pulling her close unclasping her cloak at her neck and tossing it to a dry rock formation at the side.
“Well good, because I do not think you would have been able to keep me away from you for very long if you would have said no.” His said with a teasing grin, that caused a crimson blush to fill Caitlin’s cheeks. She looked so lovely like this; the fact that she was still so innocent as to blush when he made such remarks was absolutely tantalizing. Pulling her close he kissed her softly wrapping his arms about her waist pulling her firmly against him, as he caressed her warm lips. Pulling back feeling her body go brittle for a moment, before it relaxed just slightly. He sighed, they’d come along way over night, but he saw that he was still going to have to take his time.
He found a smile again as he looked down at her, “Now you know why I said not to make your undergarments to elaborate, that way you can swim in them without concern.” Her brow furrowed slightly, that sounded strange. But it did put her mind at ease quite a bit. She had no idea why she felt so shy and uneasy about his seeing her without clothes. Shouldn’t she have been completely comfortable and even a little bit anxious where her husband was concerned? Hook just smiled and turned her around, unlacing her bodice so she could get out of it easily. Then turned back and took a few steps sitting down on a rock, watching her.
She turned and looked at him, “Are you going to watch?” She questioned staring at him. He grinned leaning back on the rock making himself comfortable, without saying a word and leaning back against it crossing his arms. Caitlin just continued to stare at him at him in pure and utter disbelief.
He chuckled and shook his head, “So much shyness from one who not only slept by my side last night, but half undressed me as well.” He sat up motioning for her to come to him. She was so inexperienced at these matters it was unreal. She walked to him as he beckoned, and he caught her hand and sat her down on the smaller rock in front of him, turning her back to him. “You really must learn not to be so shy around me Caitlin. You have nothing to hide.” He whispered gently to her pulling her hair back off her shoulders running his fingers over her collar bone around to the back of her neck. The touch made her shiver almost violently.
His fingers unlaced her bodice down the back, as he pulled it away from her body setting it aside. He reached around her leaning his cheek to hers as his hand unbuttoned her shirt down the front of her chest. Caitlin’s eyes were wide as she held absolutely still. “You . . . seem as if you’ve been schooled well . . . James.” She said nervously as her shirt fell open, her eyes closed as her back straitened.
“I am not as innocent as you are my dear Caitlin, I’ve had many years of experience.” He whispered into her ear, as he reached up carefully moving his hook into the folds of her shirt as he pulled it back off of her shoulders slowly, revealing more of her soft skin, and the lace undergarment shirt she wore. He paused a moment placing gentle kisses over her shoulders and the back of her neck, doing everything in his power to relax her. He moved back up to whisper in her ear once more, “but I can assure you, that there was no other I wanted to share my life with, until you ensnared my heart.”
James slid the shirt down off her arms, putting it aside with the other articles of removed clothing. His eyes returned to her form, noticing how incredibly rigged she’d become. He had a feeling that if she tripped and fell right at this moment she’d shatter into a million pieces she was so uncomfortable. Leaning forward he wrapped his arms around her kissing her neck and holding her close, “Would you be so kind?” He said raising his hook up in front of her chest so she knew what he was asking. Caitlin looked down and nodded, as she reached up unlocking the Iron hook and removing it as she did the night before.
Turning around she reached for his jacket pushing it back off his shoulders and down his arms, putting it aside with the growing number of articles they were shedding. Moving back to his vest as her fingers undid the buttons and the vest soon joined his jacket. Her hands reached for him again, carefully pulling the ties and removing it much in the same fashion she had the night before. However this time, she was very noticeably nervous about it. Her hands where shaking, and even more then that her eyes refused to look to his face. Getting up on her knees her trembling fingertips started to seek out the clasp that held his arm in place, but James good hand reached up and grasped them halting there movements. He wasn’t going to let her go any further until she looked at him. Caitlin just froze in place, she couldn’t move and it seemed as if she couldn’t breathe either. “Caitlin . . .” He said softly calling her attention to him. Her breath got quicker for a moment before her face turned up to look at his. Sighing a bit as he looked into those eyes that should have belonged to a frightened rabbit and not his wife, “What are you so afraid of.” He asked gently wanting her to talk to him. No response came as if she’d lost the ability to speak. “Is it me?”
Tears started to fill her eyes as she looked into his, “No . . . no it’s not you James.” She whispered not wanting him to return to the melancholy state he’d been in for so long with those sorts of thoughts.
“Caitlin . . .” He said softly, reaching up and running his fingers through her hair, hesitating not knowing if he should ask or not. He’d been reading her journal and some of the entries he’d suspected something that she never came right out and wrote down. Of all the memories that could be sparked, if he was correct in his assumption, this wasn’t the one he wanted her to recall. But he had to know, and he took a deep breath before whispering, “ . . . has someone hurt you in your past? Is that the reason you are so careful to hide yourself even around me?” Her eyes went downcast suddenly, and with that simple reaction he had his answer.
A red tint flashed in his eyes of anger but then quickly faded. It wasn’t directed at her, but if he had known before they left the real world, he would have brought back several body parts of the one who dared. He pulled her into his arms holding her tight, still running his fingers through her hair. “Your father knew of this?” He whispered, only to have her shake her head.
“no . . . no one ever knew.” She whispered. It suddenly all made sense. Her pushing away from those suitors that pursued her and burying herself in a pile of books as an excuse to give them, seemed to point that there was something wrong. In all of her journal she had written things about what she wanted, and who she wanted, and dreams that perhaps she thought in the back of her mind could never come true. It also told the fact that she’d never dated or had a young man of her own.
Carefully he reached over turning her face up to look at him, running his fingertips over her cheek “I do not care. It does not take away from your value to me, or your beauty. The beauty on the outside, and the inside.” He kissed her forehead before looking back into her eyes. “You have gone through volumes of horrid your life my love. Thankfully you seem to not be able to recall very many, if any of them. I am sorry that this one had to surface, but perhaps it will leave again in time. But none of it matters any longer.” He whispered continuing to run his fingers through her hair, “You are here with me. Your past will never be able touch you again.”
“James . . .” She started to whisper in a trembling voice her eyes leaving his face as a blush started to come to her cheeks again, “I’m still . . . he didn’t. . . .I mean. . . I’m still a . . . a. . .” All she could do was stutter, it was obviously something important to her he knew that.
“A virgin?” He said to finish her sentence for her, so she knew he understood what she was trying to tell him. She nodded her eyes staying downcast. He pulled her close to him once more holding her tight. “I know it is important to you, but I must tell you that it would not have mattered to me in the slightest if you were not.” Caitlin wrapped her arms around him holding him tight. Why did it seem as if a similar burden had just been lifted from her as to the one she’d taken from him the night before?
“Thank you James.” She whispered with a shaky voice, sounding as if she was about to weep, but was very grateful at the same time. She was an incredibly tough woman, unfortunately the same sort of circumstances that surrounded Hook’s past turned her into the strong willed person she was today. Perhaps that’s why he was drawn to her in the first place. The one thing he could not understand was how she was so gentle and kindhearted. He would have thought that she would have turned into a bitter and angry person like himself. James silently cursed himself for helping this bit of her past to be recalled to her mind as he continued to hold her tight.
He pulled her back and looked into her eyes with a smile wanting to lighten this dreadful mood and get back to why he’d brought her here in the first place. “I do not know about you, but it is getting a little drafty in this cave without the layers of clothing we had brought in with us keeping us warm. Wouldn’t you say?” Caitlin smiled and nodded looking down a moment trying to regain her senses. “Alright come on then, no more wasted time.” He said lightly bringing her good hand back to his harness. She made short work of it putting it aside with the other things before removing his sash and tossing it aside as well.
Pulling her up and kissing her softly he looked into her eyes, “Go and finish getting ready I think I can handle the rest of this myself.? She nodded standing and walking back to where she’d been standing before removing her shoes and stockings, shedding her skirts and putting them with the rest of her clothes. Hook couldn’t help it, he was completely unable remove his eyes from her as she finished undressing. But before she turned around fully his eyes turned back down to his own shoes so she did not catch him. He looked up suddenly at the sound of her diving into the water. She swam across the pool like a fish.
He chuckled to himself, “I see she remembers how to swim quiet well.”
