Author’s notes: OK, after much deliberating with myself I have decided to skip to the end of the battle....I don’t want to ruin what could be a good story by having a badly written battle scene in it. I’m going to have to do some background research etc since I know this is a weakness.
Part Fifteen
Bella POV
We approached the clearing. I was relieved to see that no one was badly injured, Carlisle was looking at an open wound on Embry’s arm and Emmet had blood down his face. On closer inspection however it appeared it was not his own blood which made me shudder slightly.
My gaze locked on Edward’s and he nodded, knowing the question I wanted to ask.
Edward POV
“Is she safe now?” Jacob asked.
“Yes, Victoria believed me for a while, she grew suspicious but fortunately she went for me.” I replied. “As you can see one of us is still here.”
“And everyone else is safe?” Bella asked. “No one was hurt badly?” She was still scanning them.
“Everyone’s fine Bella.” Carlisle said softly.
“We’re too late.” Alice gasped suddenly. “They’re coming...we have about a minute...over there.” Alice pointed to a bank opposite us on the clearing. My gaze flashed to Bella’s but I knew it was too late to get her out of here.
“Stay close to Jacob.” I said.
“What are you doing?” Carlisle asked cautiously. “Aro can read you remember?” Too late. A small group of vampires appeared on top of the bank. They stood taking in the scene for a moment before heading down to meet the two groups in front of them. The pack all kept close together and Jacob held Bella to him. My family all kept close together also forming a divide between the wolves and vampires again.
“Carlisle.” Aro greeted Carlisle with a nod.
“Aro, it been a long time.” He replied smoothly.
“Too long.” Aro replied. “It’s seems you’ve saved us a job, we owe you thanks.”
“Anytime, we didn’t want to raise suspicion any more than you did.” Carlisle said. Aro’s gaze flickered to Bella curiously.
“A human? Carlisle...you know the rule about humans...” Caius said smugly, predicting bloodshed.
“Well, Bella is a little different to most humans.” I said. “She’s not entirely human, she’s with the pack.”
“She doesn’t look like a wolf to me.” Caius snorted.
“She’s not entirely that either.” Carlisle added, twigging on my plan.
“Half wolf? Intriguing...” Aro murmured.
“She sure looks human to me, Aro.” Marcus grumbled to Aro.
“Her mother was a wolf and father human, hence the more human appearance.” I said. “Somehow she has ended up somewhere in between...although she cannot turn into a wolf she still has some supernatural abilities.” Bella looked at me, horrified. She obviously didn’t know how special she really was.
“Really?” Aro asked, looking back at Bella. Jacob all but growled at him.
“She’s a shield. I cannot hear her thoughts.” I said. I knew what Aro would do next. He touched my hand. I knew he would see images of Bella and I, of my frustration of being unable to read her mind, being driven mad by her scent, her father and her and Jacob together also.
“May I?” Aro asked, turning to Bella. She looked nervous but having seen him do the same to me she placed her hand into his lightly. After a moment of silence he pulled his hand away and smiled. “Well, well. What a marvellous talent. Shall we test it futher...Jane?” No! I thought. Just in case...what if it didn’t work for everyone.... No one said anything for a moment. I wanted to shout out not to harm her but my mouth wouldn’t open. I looked at Jane. She looked frustrated.
“Nothing.” She said quietly to Aro, he just smiled.
“Have you ever considered becoming a vampire my dear? I could certainly use someone of your talents.” He asked. “They would be even stronger once you’d been turned.”
“I have considered it.” Bella admitted hesitantly. “But at the current moment I am not interested. If I change my mind...”
“The offer is open ended.” Aro said. “Do let me know if you reconsider. Jane stop trying to hurt her.” He chuckled to himself. “Keep in touch Carlisle.” With that he motioned for the others to follow him and headed away from the clearing.
Once they were gone I gave the nod to everyone that they were no longer in earshot.
“Nice one Edward.” Emmett said, admiringly. “You lie like the best of them and you managed to lie to Aro!”
“Hush Emmett.” Esme said. “That was very dangerous Edward.”
“I know. But it worked.” I replied. “I think we all could do with going home and relaxing.”
“You said it.” Jacob said. The pack started leaving.
“Bella?” I asked. “Can I talk to you?”
“I’m a little unable to think right now Edward...can I talk to you later? I could stop by this evening.” She replied. I felt a twinge of pain. Would I ever win her back?
“Sure.” I said, wanting to say so many other things.
Jacob POV
I walked with Bella away from the clearing and into the woods. I could see her starting to sway slightly, she was tired...either that or in shock.
“Bella?” I murmured. She turned to me and I picked her up in my arms. “Need a lift?” I smiled at her slightly shocked face. She didn’t protest though and after only moments of walking with her in my arms she was asleep.
I carefully laid Bella on the sofa but she stirred as I did so and opened her eyes. She looked so venerable with her wide brown eyes looking up at me, tired and watery.
“How are you feeling?” I asked her.
“Better.” She whispered. “Come sit with me.” I didn’t need to be told twice. I lifted her legs and came and sat under them, laying them back over my lap.
“So did you ever decide?” I asked her curiously. She gave me a confused look. “What you were going to tell Charlie, before he heads up here with a search warrant for you.” She suddenly looked horrified again.
“Oh my God! I didn’t even tell him where I was!” she gasped. “He’s probably so worried, he’ll be doing his nut.” Before I could reply laughter headed our way. Bella sat up and we both looked behind the sofa to see Charlie and my dad coming into the kitchen laughing their heads off.
“So much for doing his nut.” I whispered.
“Hey kids.” Charlie said, walking in to see us, a can of beer in his hand. “Hey Bella, are you ever intending to come home?”
“Sorry dad...” she mumbled, her cheeks turning red.
“It’s ok, Billy told me you’ve pretty much been up here the whole time.” Charlie said. “But I really would rather you leave a note at least so I know you’re safe.”
Bella POV
I don’t believe it! He was never this lenient when it came to Edward. But when it came to Jacob it was no big deal.
“Yeah dad. I’m sorry.” I replied. I suddenly felt guilty for not really seeing him the past two weeks. I’d spent nearly all my time at either the Cullens or La Push including most nights.
We spent the afternoon relaxing in La Push, almost like a family.
Then it was time for me to go and see Edward...
Author’s Notes: there you go. Hope I didn’t disappoint anyone in the next chapter Bella goes to talk to Edward. Will he change her mind again?
