Edward returned sooner than expected. Alice found herself unable to feel Bella, and that worried her, so she called her brother. He waited at the edge of the reservation, debating whether or not to break the treaty and go after Bella.
Liam groaned when he saw the silver Volvo behind him. “How mad?” Bella asked.
Liam didn’t answer for a moment. “He might actually try to kill me this time,” he sighed. He’d known this was going to happen but had been hoping to have Carlisle as a buffer. It was small comfort that they would at least be in a public place.
Liam pulled into the parking lot where Bella’s truck was still parked. “Just run for your truck,” he told her. “Go to Angela’s and help her. Let me deal with Edward for now.”
Bella looked hesitant. “I don’t want you taking the heat for me,” she argued.
Liam chuckled. “I’m a big boy, Bella. I knew exactly what I was doing when I took you there. Like I told Jacob, I can handle Edward.”
Edward was already out of his car and approaching them. Liam got out and stared him down. “You don’t own her, and you sure as fuck don’t own me,” Liam said, standing his ground.
Edward was so angry his whole body was shaking. When Bella saw him she was actually frightened enough to not have a problem with running straight for her truck and taking off. Edward didn’t try to stop her; he knew he was too angry to deal with her just yet.
He turned back to his uncle. “I may not own her, but she is my mate. Who do you think you are to put her in danger like that?”
“She wasn’t in danger,” Liam replied. “Jacob would never hurt her.”
“He’s a young werewolf. All it would take is for him to lose his temper just once—”
“Kind of like you’re about to do now?” Liam pointed out. “You and I both know you let her go just now because you’re afraid you might lose your temper with her. How is that any different?”
“Because it is,” Edward said through clenched teeth. “My temper wouldn’t be an issue if you two didn’t keep going behind my back. Worst of all, you’re supposed to know better!”
“I do know better than you. I know Jacob was there for her when you weren’t. Regardless of why you left, if it hadn’t been for him you wouldn’t have had anything to come back to, and you know it. Jacob loves her, and the knowledge of what could happen if he were to lose control gives him a very good reason not to. And besides, I was there with her too. If it came to that, I could take him.”
Liam had hit a nerve, and he knew it. The wind was suddenly let out of Edward’s sails as he was reminded of what he’d done to Bella. “You still had no right,” Edward growled, but his tone was less hostile now. “We’ll take this up with Carlisle later.”
“Oh, there’s a good idea,” Liam replied sarcastically. “He’s about ready to strangle us both.”
“All the more reason for you to quit behaving like this.”
“You could take your own advice, you know.”
Edward snorted as he turned and left. They both drove home and told Carlisle everything. “It wasn’t a good idea to take her there,” Carlisle said, siding with Edward this time. “Promise me you’ll stay off their land. Your presence could have caused a problem, and you would have been outnumbered.”
“But—” Liam started to argue.
“No buts.” The elder vampire turned to Edward. “And don’t think you’re completely off the hook, either. I understand your concerns, but you hardly left Bella much choice. I want you to think about that.”
“Yes, Carlisle,” Edward nodded. It figured that Liam wouldn’t get in much trouble. The Volturi weren’t the only ones who let Liam do pretty much whatever the hell he wanted, with few exceptions. “I’m gonna go wait for Bella,” he mumbled.
Liam sighed, wondering what he was going to do now. He’d slipped his phone number into Jacob’s pocket before he left, and apparently now he would have to await a response. Things turned out better than he’d hoped though, because Jacob called later that night to say he was willing to go along with Liam’s plan.
Since Edward hadn’t fed, Bella insisted that he go away. She was hoping to go back down to La Push, but Edward wasn’t going to let that happen again. He plotted with Alice to hold Bella hostage until he returned.
Esme called Charlie and set up the entire thing: Bella and Alice were going to have a slumber party. So when Bella left school that Thursday it was Alice, not Edward, who was waiting to pick her up. Bella didn’t think too much of it at first, but she soon figured it out.
“Why are you doing this?” she whimpered.
“I’m sorry,” Alice frowned. “It’s for your own good. We want you to be safe.”
“I would have been just fine,” Bella grumbled. “What about my things? All I have are the clothes I’m wearing.”
“All taken care of,” Alice assured her as they pulled up to the house.
Bella was too angry to speak as she got out of the car and headed inside. It was too much to hope that Liam would help her again. He was probably in a lot of trouble from the last time.
When she opened the door her nose was bombarded with the delicious smells of food cooking. “What’s all this?”
Liam appeared in the doorway, wiping his hands on his pants. “We couldn’t exactly let you go hungry while you’re being held prisoner. I hope you like lasagna.”
“Lasagna’s fine,” she answered. She’d made it before for Charlie, but this didn’t smell anything like hers. It smelled mouth-wateringly delicious. Her stomach even rumbled in agreement. “I might want your recipe.” She wasn’t angry with Liam. Ulterior motive or not, he’d been helping her.
Liam laughed. “You’ll have to remind me to write it down later, then.”
Bella took her books into the kitchen to work on her homework. She was a little surprised to see a plate of what looked like fresh double chocolate cookies on the counter, and two place sets at the table. “Is someone else coming?” she asked as she laid her books out on the table.
“Yep,” Liam grinned impishly. “I invited a guest of my own.”
“And he won’t tell us who,” Alice frowned. “I tried to get a vision, but I can’t.”
Liam’s grin widened. “You’ll see. My new boy toy should be here soon.”
As if on cue the sound of a motorcycle could be heard approaching the house. Everyone ran to see who it was, but no one could believe it. “Jacob!” Bella cried happily. At that moment she didn’t care why he was there.
“Bells,” Jacob greeted her with a smile. Then he greeted Liam with a hug.
“Hiya, sugarplum.” Liam squeezed back. He liked not having to be so careful. Jacob was good and sturdy.
“Wait, you’re—why did you just—Jacob, could I talk to you for a moment?” Bella was seriously confused. She thought Liam was just helping them again, but something else was going on.
“Dinner is almost ready,” Liam said as he headed back inside with Alice, Esme, and Rosalie. They all seemed to be in shock, which pleased Liam.
“What are you doing here?” Bella asked Jacob once everyone else was back in the house.
Jacob had to admit he kind of liked seeing jealousy flash across her features for a brief second. Maybe Liam knew what he was talking about and this would work. “Bella, you were the one who wanted me to give them a chance. I decided to do exactly that.”
“But are you really with him? I mean, you’re not gay, are you?” She actually looked a little hurt.
Jacob chuckled softly. “Yes, we’re together. I guess I like both.”
“Does your dad know?”
“No, of course not!” Jacob cried. “You know why I can’t tell him. Bella, this is sort of a trial thing. I guess you could say I decided to take a little walk in your shoes. Don’t lecture me, because you have no room to talk. I thought I’d start with Liam because he doesn’t seem so bad. He did help us.”
Bella didn’t quite know what to think. “But how do you go from hating vampires to dating one?”
“I just told you,” Jacob sighed. “I thought you of all people would be happy about this. I’m doing it for you,” he said before turning to head inside.
Inside, Liam had a few questions to answer, too. “Why do you keep doing this?” Esme asked. “For once, why can’t you behave yourself and respect others’ wishes?”
Liam scowled. “Before Carlisle left he said I could have someone over, too. Jacob’s who I wanted. This isn’t for Bella.”
“But the whole purpose of this was to keep Bella away from him,” Alice frowned.
“Here’s the beauty of that though: Edward wanted her kept safe. Here, in this house, there are four of us and one of him. If for some reason he loses his temper, we can handle it. I don’t expect that to happen, though. He has excellent control.”
Esme folded her arms. “And this isn’t some sort of trick? He’s really here to see you?” Liam nodded. “And how did you get him to do that?”
“That’s classified.” Liam grinned evilly.
“What’s classified?” Jacob asked as he entered the living room. All eyes turned on him and a shiver ran down his spine. Maybe spending the night in a house full of vampires wasn’t such a good idea.
“What I’m going to do to you later,” Liam answered. “Hungry?”
“Do you really need to ask?” Jacob laughed nervously. He wondered if he’d ever be comfortable around vampires.
His eyes widened when he saw everything laid out on the table. “You can cook?”
“Why does everyone always seem so shocked?” Liam sighed dramatically. “Yes, I can cook! I only went to Le Cordon Bleu in Paris after I got tired of being a ballerina.”
“You were a ballerina?” Jacob asked, surprised. He’d felt like he knew Liam, but apparently he didn’t know everything.
“You don’t need my entire life story tonight. Sit down and eat,” Liam ordered.
Jacob didn’t need to be told twice. He made a slight sound of enjoyment before all but inhaling everything on his plate. Esme watched with a look of horror. “Didn’t anyone ever teach that boy manners?” she whispered to Liam. “I guess, in a way, he fits you well.”
Liam only smiled. “He’s a perfect match. You’ll see.”
When dinner was over and the dishes had been cleared from the table, they sat down to watch a movie. Alice had picked out a few of Bella’s favorites in an effort to try to make her happy. Liam sat on the end of the couch and Jacob leaned against him. “That doesn’t bother you?” Bella asked, taking a seat beside Jacob.
“What?”
“The cold. Sometimes I have to put a blanket between me and Edward.”
Jacob smirked. “No, it feels kinda nice. It cools me off.”
“Mmmm, warm….” Liam snuggled up against Jacob. Jacob’s skin was hot, and the heat radiated through Liam and gave him a nice warm and fuzzy feeling. He would have been content to stay in that spot and never move.
But eventually the movie ended. “How late did you want to stay up?” Alice asked Bella.
“I think I should get to bed,” Bella answered. “We have school tomorrow. You should be getting home, too, Jacob.”
Jacob reluctantly got up from the couch. “Yeah, my dad’s probably wondering where I am.” He looked back longingly at Liam. He hadn’t expected leaving would be this hard.
“Where did you tell him you were going, anyway?” Bella asked curiously.
Jacob paused for a moment. “I told him I was seeing a friend of yours.”
Bella was stunned. “Don’t you think you should have told me this before? How could you use me to lie to your dad?”
Jacob rolled his eyes. “I thought we’d been over this. You wanted me to get along with…them…so, here I am.” He turned back to Liam. “Where are we meeting tomorrow?”
“Here, I guess,” Liam answered.
“You’re coming back tomorrow, too?” Bella asked hopefully.
“Well, after we go shopping,” Jacob answered.
“Shopping?”
Jacob nodded. “Yeah. Apparently nothing I own is fit to wear to Seattle on Saturday.” He turned around and made a face at Liam.
Liam stuck out his tongue. “It’s not my fault you have bad taste in clothes.”
“Wait, you’re going to Seattle? But I thought it wasn’t safe.”
“For you, it’s not,” Liam answered. “But I can take care of myself. Carlisle asked me to go, and I want to take a date. Don’t worry about Jacob, not only will he be with me, but he’s not exactly helpless.”
Bella let out an irritated sigh. Things weren’t going at all the way she wanted. “Fine, whatever. Just be careful, okay?”
Jacob nodded. “I will. Don’t worry so much. You have more to worry about than I do.” He pulled Bella into a hug to say goodbye.
Liam got up and walked Jacob to the door. They stood face to face in awkward silence for several moments while everyone else watched. A swirl of emotion was running through Jacob. He’d agreed to this to try to win Bella back, but after only one night he wasn’t so sure he wanted to any more.
Before he knew it he was leaning in and pressing his lips to Liam’s. The kiss was unsure at first, but grew in intensity. Next thing Jacob knew he was being picked up off his feet and pinned to the wall while Liam tried to devour his mouth.
It was Liam who ended it, dropping Jacob and taking a step back. “That was…interesting, to say the least,” he smiled.
Jacob’s heart was pounding, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. His whole body was trembling and his mind was screaming for him to kiss Liam again. “I guess I’d better go,” he mumbled before quickly turning and leaving.
