Teddy was bouncing happily in his little activity saucer. This kid had so much gear it could make a dent in even the wealthiest man’s wallet. And it did, but I didn’t mind. Anything for Teddy.
I was on the couch catching up on the mail. Ana had started working again two weeks ago. I wasn’t thrilled that she was going back to work. I remember Grace working long hours at the hospital when I was young and wanted Teddy to have all of Ana’s attention. At the same time, I wanted Ana to do what she loved, to be passionate, to identify as something more than a mother, and she fiercely agreed. We compromised on her working shorter hours, so she was home in the early afternoon when Teddy woke up from his nap. Tonight she had gone out to dinner with Kate, and I was on daddy-duty. Teddy and I had come a long way these past seven months, and I finally had his routine down, if I do say so myself. I heard the key in the lock, and Ana and Kate chatting away as they walked in the door. “Christian?” “In the den!” “Hi, baby boy!” Teddy bounced around wildly, banging his hands on the buttons of his play-gym, eyes all lit up at the sight of his mother. Ana pulled him out and planted kisses all over his cheeks. “Give me my nephew!” Kate grabbed the baby, planting another kiss on him and tickling his belly. Ana strode over to kiss me hello. “How was dinner, love?” “It was great!” Kate answered instead, always the talker. “Nice to see you, Kate. My brother hasn’t sent you running yet?” “Takes more than a Grey man to scare me off, Christian.” The girls laughed. “We’re just going to have some ice cream and some girl talk, baby,” Ana told me. “Okay, I’ll put Teddy to bed.” Kate kissed him goodnight and passed him to Ana. “Goodnight my sweet boy. Mommy loves you.” I took the baby and headed upstairs. “Alright, Teddy bear. First things first. Diaper.” I undressed him on the changing table and pulled the tape. “Ugh. This never really gets easier, Ted. Let’s potty train you soon.” Teddy gurgled back at me. I pulled his footie pajamas out of the drawer and wriggled him into them. “There you go, big boy.” I lifted him under his arms so that he was standing on the table before whisking him off to the rocking chair. We settled down with a book, and I rocked him back and forth slowly, watching him move from alert to sleepy. He looked so relaxed stretched across my lap, thumb in his mouth, little pajama-covered foot in the air against my chest. I moved him to his crib with a kiss. “Goodnight, Ted.” I grabbed the monitor and went to head downstairs, but stopped at the top of the steps when I heard Ana and Kate deep in conversation. “… just different now. Like we went on vacation, and didn’t even have sex the first two nights.” “Really?” I took a seat on the stairs, knowing well that eavesdropping on my wife’s private conversation was inherently wrong, but being unable to stop myself. “Yeah. We used to go four times a day, but now we’re just busier, exhausted. We love Teddy to pieces. I couldn’t imagine life without him, but it’s just definitely different.” “I want to talk to Elliot about trying.” “Really?!” “Yeah, I really want to have a baby. Every time I see you guys with Teddy it just makes me want that, too.” “Oh, Kate! That’s so exciting! Do you think Elliot will want to start trying?” “I think so. I mean, I don’t know that he’s ready to be a father, per se, but I figure if Christian, who was the most not-ready-to-be-a-father man I’ve ever known, could embrace fatherhood this well, then Elliot can, too.” I grimaced at Kate’s words. She was always a little bit hard to take. I heard Ana scold her. “Christian was ready, he just didn’t know it. We didn’t know it. Having a baby makes you step up.” Ana got even quieter, and I strained to hear. “I want to talk to Christian about having another baby,” she whispered. I sucked in my breath. I should not be listening to this. “Oh my god, Ana, that’s amazing! We could get pregnant together! Our babies could be the same age!” “I don’t know, Kate. I don’t know if Christian’s ready yet. He’s been so amazing; he’s the best father to Teddy, but I don’t want to push him over the edge. Our little family works for us right now.” “But you said you wanted another!” “I do! I really do. Sure the first few months and the last few months of pregnancy kind of suck, but right in the middle, when you’re all cute and round and feeling the baby’s first kicks, it’s incredible.” I sighed quietly. Those months were pretty great. It would be nice to see Ana round with my child again. “Ugh, I can’t wait!” Kate squealed. “I hope Elliot will get on board.” “I bet he will, Kate. He loves kids. He seems to like being an uncle to Teddy. Plus you can tell him that pregnancy sex is amazing.” “It is?” “Oh yeah.” I chuckled to myself. My kinky wife. Teddy gave a little cough in his sleep, and the baby monitor came to life. I jumped. Guess it was a good time to head downstairs. “Hey, babe.” Ana noticed me making my way down. “Hi, what are you girls up to?” “Just girl talk,” Kate replied. “And ice cream!” Ana added. “Mm, what flavor?” “Vanilla.” Ana smiled and offered out a spoonful to me. I made my way to the couch and took a bite. “Mm, I love vanilla.” Ana giggled. “All right, I’ll leave you lovebirds to it. Thanks for dinner, Ana.” Kate got up and headed to the door, and we followed, walking her out. I opened the door. “Goodnight, Kate. Say hi to Elliot for me.” I kissed her cheek. “Night, Christian. Bye, Ana.” They hugged. We watched her get in her car and shut the door. “Did you have fun with Kate, love?” We walked back to the den and settled on the couch. “Yup, good to chat.” “I’m glad.” I kissed her forehead. “How was Teddy?” “Absolutely perfect.” Ana snuggled up to my chest, and we turned on the TV.A big thank you to all my fans who came from fanfiction.net, and a big hello to all my brand-new fans on this site!
