A/N: Time for a little Q&A. The most commonly asked question is by far, how old are the not so short people these days, and how old do they look. Their calender ages, as I like to say, are as follows. A.J. is ten, the girls are all nine, and Asa is six and a half.
In the world S.M. created, mature wolves look like they are in their early to mid twenties, and I try to stay as close to that as possible in AGU. Anthony would look around twenty three-ish. (I can’t believe I just typed that!) Swan looks around eighteen or nineteen, and so does Mollie. Xandra looks older since she’s a wolf, but is still younger then Anthony, so about twenty one. Our little Asa would look thirteen or fourteen now. Yikes! Everyone but him can now be considered fully grown.
Fun fact: We’ve covered two and a half years since the start of part III.
Remember, if you ask a question in an anonymous review, I won’t be able to write back to you. If enough people ask, or I think it’s a particularly good question that I should probably address, I’ll stick the answer in here next time.
Mollie
Seth and I sat on the forest floor, our arms wound around each other, as I made phone calls. Obviously, I wasn’t going to Montana, and might as well have flushed most of my emergency money down the toilet. That didn’t mean I wanted to go home.
Aunt Rachel said I could sleep on her couch, as long as Mom knew. So I texted her and told her.
Ok, but I do wish you’d come home 2nite. Please come home to hunt, it’s been a while for you and X. It’ll help you think more clearly. We love you, was her response.
Damn.
I’d forgotten we had that planned for tomorrow night. I rolled my eyes, I hated to admit that she was probably right. I said I’d come home then.
I’d wanted to stay at Sam and Emily’s, but Seth said that might be a bad idea.
“I wouldn’t be able to stay away from you, I’d end up on the couch, too,” he said.
“I’m still not seeing the problem,” I said with a smile.
“People are gonna need time to get used to this, I think,” he murmured into my hair. His hand, on the other side of my head, had been very busy, slowly running down each strand. I wanted to stay here until he got them all, he was pretty close.
“They’d better hurry up,” I replied.
He continued touching my hair, and kissing the top of my head, making me shiver.
“It’s getting dark,” he whispered. We couldn’t see the sun going down with all the trees in the way, but the sky was turning orange.
“Yeah,” I said. My face pressed against his chest felt so warm, I felt so warm everywhere. I dreaded what I knew he was going to say next.
“Why don’t I take you over to Paul and Rachel’s?”
“I really don’t want to,” I mumbled.
“I know. Come on,” he said, getting up. He offered me his hands. I grabbed them, but frowned as he pulled me to my feet.
I felt stiff. I stretched my legs, and rolled my head around.
“Are you sure you don’t wanna go home?” he asked.
“Very sure,” I said firmly.
“Okay,” he said, taking my hand and starting to lead me through the woods. “You’ll have to go home sometime,” he reminded me.
“I know. I just can’t right now,” I said.
“How come?” He squeezed my hand. I didn’t really feel like talking about it at the moment. All I wanted to think about was how nice my hand felt in his, so I just shrugged.
I didn’t think I could forgive my family as easily as I’d forgiven Seth, it wasn’t Seth’s fault.
“Just remember what you said, Mol. It doesn’t matter how we got here.”
I frowned when he used my own words against me.
He laughed at me. “You’re cute when you’re annoyed.”
I probably blushed a little.
“You look tired,” he commented. He took me by surprise, and threw me on his back. I threw my arms around his shoulders, and buried my face in his neck as he started to jog. I was so comfortable, we may as well have been snuggled up inside under a blanket. I closed my eyes, and tried to pretend he was moving slower then he really was, and that he was taking the long way, but he didn’t. When I heard my cousins playing outside, I knew he hadn’t.
I whined and hugged him tighter.
He chuckled. “What?” he asked.
“I don’t want you to go,” I mumbled.
“I know, but I’ll see you in the morning. Get ahold of me as soon as you wake up,” he said as we reached the driveway. My cousins and couple other kids from the rez were in their coats, riding their bikes up and down the driveway in the low light.
“Hey, look who’s here!” Aunt Rachel called. She jumped up from the front step and ran over to us as I unwillingly slid off Seth’s back. “Seth, leave so that we can talk about you,” she said.
He narrowed his eyes, but smiled at her. “Fine, just don’t say anything bad, it’ll kill me.”
He wrapped his arms around me, and I wished I could crawl into his pocket and go with him. I also wished we’d been able to say goodbye alone. He whispered to me so that no one else could hear.
“In the morning, I promise. Anything else can wait. Any body who knows me, will understand that you’re more important.”
I whispered back, just as quietly.
“I won’t be able to sleep,” I whispered.
“Just try,” he said with a smile.
A kiss would have been nice, but this wasn’t the right moment, not at all. He gave me a gentle one on the forehead before turning and leaving.
Aunt Rachel gave me a knowing smile, I snorted a laugh and hid my face.
“What?!” I demanded. She got me in a death grip, and shook me by the shoulders.
“I’m so excited for you!” she said in a loud whisper.
I smiled, and looked down at my hands.
“Aww!” she cooed. “But don’t think that just because I find the whole thing adorable means your ass isn’t going right back home tomorrow,” she added.
“I will. Do you see why I’m a little pissed though?”
“Yes, but I see your Dad and Mom’s point, too. You needed to have some maturity. What if you had kids really young and gave them stupid names. It’d be especially worse in your case, with your indefinite lifespans and all,” she said.
“What?” I said, confused.
“It would be you, Seth, and Dopey for all of eternity, you know he’d let you!”
“Is there a point to this?” I asked. I was amused, but still, not following.
“Surprisingly, yes. I’m going to tell you a little secret: In case you haven’t noticed, in these kinds of relationships, we have the power.”
“It sure doesn’t feel like it,” I said. I sure hadn’t felt powerful earlier today.
“It will. We are all a little different, but there are a few things that will always be the same. He will do pretty much whatever you want. A year ago, do you think you were old enough to make all the decisions that have to be made in a marriage?”
“Damn, Aunt Rachel!” I said.
“I know. You aren’t married yet, but as of right now, you are in a lifetime thing. Decisions will have to be made, and most of the time, he’s gonna think anything that’s your idea, is a good one. Do you see what I’m saying?”
“Um, I think so.”
“He’s gonna look to you, she said. “For everything. Where to live, where he should work. Huge stuff like how many kids you should have, and how you should raise them. Are you ready for that?”
I couldn’t tell whether or not she thought I was by the way she asked. I’d never thought about it before. She waited while I took a minute to do so.
“I don’t know,” I admitted.
For the first time, I was scared of this.
“That’s why you need to remember to take things slow. Don’t run off to Vegas and get married tomorrow or anything crazy like that. He’d go along with it, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. If I told Paul I wanted him to do every single chore and errand for the rest of our lives, he’d do it. That isn’t fair to him, though. He trusts you, and your opinions so much, yours mean more to him than his own. Don’t take advantage of that.”
“I won’t,” I promised.
I hadn’t really thought it was so serious.
“It’s still a relationship, even though it’s different from the normal kind. It can’t all be nice dinner dates, then sucking face. Those parts are fun though.”
Yes, they sure would be.
I paid more attention to my Aunt and Uncle then I normally did that night. I tried to remove my self and think of them not as my family, just imprints and their family.
I saw how truly elated she was when he returned home from work. I watched the way he watched her take care of their kids. They made it seem easy to have such a happy life together.
I knew my parents were happy, that was obvious. Sometimes a little too happy. If they weren’t my parents, it might be cute that they sneak into the laundry room to make out and think we have no idea.
Someday, Seth and I would be like that, too. I’d enjoy everything along the way.
I couldn’t wait to see him again and get started.
As I had predicted, I was still awake into the early morning. On the couch in the dark living room, I counted tiny cracks in the ceiling. I gave up trying to sleep around two a.m., and started letting my mind drift. Maybe that would work better, you can’t really concentrate that hard on going to sleep. It kind of has the opposite affect.
I wondered if Seth was sleeping. What time would be to early to call him?
I decided to watch some television. Maybe if I found a good movie or two, I could kill enough time that afterwards, it would be a more reasonable hour.
As I got up to look for the remote, my phone went off. It quietly vibrated on the coffee table, and it’s bright light lit up the room.
I knew it was him before I opened my phone to read his text.
Are you sleeping?
I smiled as I wrote back.
Yes.
I thought of him sitting in his bed writing the reply.
Oops, did I wake u?
I laughed quietly and shook my head.
Just kiddin. Still wide awake.
What a goober.
O good. id hate 2 think I came over here for nothing ;)
What?
I got up and went to the door. I pulled back the curtain on the window and peeked out.
Nothing.
Ur full of shit.
While I waited for him to respond, I went to look out the kitchen window to see if he was on that side of the house.
Nope.
Come out front.
I slowly opened the front door, crept out onto the porch in my bare feet and scanned the woods. Out towards the road, I could see him at the edge of the trees. Without another thought, I started running towards him. I swatted branches out of my way until I reached his opened arms. I collided into him and was lifted off the ground. Strong as a brick wall, he didn’t even budge.
He sighed with the relief that I also felt washing over me.
“I’m sorry, I just needed to see you,” he said. Like he needed to apologize.
“Oh, pft! I’m so glad you’re here,” I told him.
“Do you wanna go somewhere?” he asked, setting me down.
“Okay, like where?” I asked.
Not that it mattered, I was in.
“A little pond I know. You’ll like it, it’s pretty there.”
On the way there, he held my hand. I loved how big and warm his hand felt around mine.
He was right, the random pond in the middle of the woods was small, but pretty. The stream feeding it provided some nice background noise.
He looked up, and lined us up with the opening in the trees.
“There,” he said. “You can see the stars perfect from right here.”
We sat on the ground, and I leaned back on my hands so that I could comfortably look up into the sky. As he settled beside me, I decided to just lay on my back.
I didn’t say I wasn’t tired, just that I couldn’t sleep.
He was propped up on his elbow next to me. I was looking at the stars, but he was looking at me.
“I figured it out how to make it up to you,” he said.
I reached over and put my hand on his shoulder. “You don’t have to do anything.”
“Yes, yes I do. I’m going to always be honest with you. I’ll never hide my feelings from you again,” he promised. “You know how I feel about you, right?”
I nodded.
“I hope so.”
He started smoothing my hair away from my face.
“In case you forgot, I love you.” He rubbed my check with his thumb, then his fingertips traced the line of my jaw.
I rested my eyes as his hand traced my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could tell when he scooted closer to me.
I was so relaxed, I could have fallen asleep. I was wide awake though, once his thumb swept across my bottom lip. I could feel his warm breath on my face. I hadn’t realized he was that close, it made my breathing faster and more shallow.
I opened my eyes to see him just inches above me.
We’d been quiet so long, it started me a little when he spoke, even though it was only a whisper.
“I think I owe you a kiss.”
I tried to reply, but couldn’t find my voice. He was waiting for my permission.
“Yes,” I breathed.
It felt like slow motion, maybe it was, as he lowered his face to mine.
He closed his eyes, and I did too, just before his lips brushed against mine. One time, then again. The next time, his lips lingered. I reached up to hold the back of his neck, not wanting us to separate. He took my bottom lip between his, then released it to press his lips to both of mine more firmly.
We moved slowly together as I figured it out, kissing wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
He caressed my face, and the side of my neck. I felt his tongue in the center of my bottom lip, then it was gone. Then it was right back, running from side to side. I could feel my heart going wild as I opened my mouth for him. His tongue slid past my lips, mine met his with no hesitation.
I couldn’t help the moan I let out.
I felt a little embarrassed, until he moaned right back.
He tasted even better than he smelled, I could hardly believe it. It was that amazing, masculine scent in an even more concentrated form.
I couldn’t get enough of it, of him.
Our tongues tangled slowly together, but I wanted even more.
I grabbed his face with both hands, and pushed his tongue back into his mouth so I could explore it. He opened up with a sigh, which tasted delicious by the way, giving me room to play. I found that at certain angles, I could kiss him even more deeply.
That was the goal.
When I pulled away to gasp for breath, his lips moved to my jaw. They traveled along to just below my ear. When he started to gently suck at the tender skin there, I felt my stomach do a flip flop. When his tongue darted out, it did it again.
My next breath came out as an odd, unintentional little huff.
He hummed against me.
“Does that feel good?” he murmured.
“Yes,” I managed to say in a strained voice.
When he removed his lips, I felt the cool air hit the moistened skin where he’d been.
“I’ll have to remember that,” he whispered.
He touched his forehead to mine. Above him, I could see all the stars through the hole in the trees. I felt like the world was spinning way too fast, but in a good way.
“I love you.” I told him.
“Oh, God. It’s so good to hear you say that. I love you so much. You’re so beautiful.”
He kissed me again.
“It’s fucking amazing how beautiful you are,” he said.
Our lips met again, and we stayed firmly pressed together until I felt my phone go off in my pocket.
I froze.
We parted and looked at each other.
“Uh oh,” I said.
I quickly got it out, and was only slightly relieved that it was Aunt Rachel, and not my mom.
“Hello?” I said hesitantly.
“Oh, good. You aren’t dead in a ditch,” she joked dryly.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “Did you tell Mom?”
“Nope.”
“Are you going to?” I asked.
“I probably should, but I probably won’t. I’ll put it this way: coming back now would be a good idea.”
I fought back a sigh.
“Okay, I’ll be right there.”
“I guess I shouldn’t have dragged you out here, kept you awake and all,” Seth said sheepishly.
“I like being dragged out here and kept awake though,” I argued.
He grinned and gave me a soft peck.
“Another time,” he promised. “We’ll come back here.”
He carried me on his back through the trees to Aunt Rachel’s. I treasured being this close to him for the few minutes we had on the way.
After I made sure we weren’t being spied on through any windows, we said goodbye with a long, sweet kiss just outside the door.
“Get some sleep. I’ll be thinking about you,” he whispered.
“Me too,” I said. “I love you.”
“I love you,” he returned.
I watched him run until I couldn’t see him anymore.
All of the lights were off in the house, I hoped Aunt Rachel had trusted that I’d come right back, and had returned to bed. I tip toed into the living room and looked around. To the left in the kitchen, I could see her sitting in the dark at the table.
“What are you doing in here with the lights off?” I wondered.
“Trying to intimidate you. Aren’t you supposed to wait for a wayward child in a dark room? I guess it doesn’t work so well with you, since you can see me anyway. Get over here, my little wandering one,” she said.
I knew she wasn’t really angry , she understood, but I approached slowly and said, “Have I mentioned how lovely you look this evening? Your bathrobe is such a fantastic shade of pink. I never noticed before, but it really brings out your eyes.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere,” she teased, and flicked me in the arm.
“Hey!”
“That’s what you get for running off twice in one day, jeeze!”
“I know, I’m sorry. You didn’t really think I was dead in a ditch, did you?” I asked.
“Of course not. You better watch it though,” she warned.
“I may not have freaky super senses like you guys, but I’m not dumb. You left my front door hanging wide open.”
Oops.
A/N: Oops is right, way to go Mollie. The first rule of sneaking out is don’t leave the door open. I have a feeling she’ll get the hang of it though.
I know I made you wait a bit for that first kiss, hopefully this made up for it ;) I just want you to know, as I wrote that, I was thinking about all the little sea critters singing Kiss the Girl in The Little Mermaid lol.
Next chapter, we’ll be picking up just about where we left off, so don’t think I’m skipping when Mollie goes home. Not meaning to drag this out, but there sure is an awful lot going on.
Thanks so much for all the reviews! I reply when I can, but please know I read every single one :D
Til next time, be safe ;)
