Chapter 16 – Deception
Christine could hardly wait to see Erik that night as she sat in her dressing room, thinking of him as she ran his rose over her lips. She didn’t know that he was already there with his hand on the edge of the mirror. He was just about to slide it back when there was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” she called, still holding the rose as she stood to face whoever it was.
Raoul walked in with a bouquet of pink roses in his hand, smiling as always when he visited her.
“I thought you would like these,” he said cheerfully.
Erik clenched his teeth in annoyance. When was this wretched boy ever going to leave her be? Would he ever give up?
“They’re lovely. You can put them there.” She motioned to an empty vase on her dressing table, but never reached out to take them.
Raoul couldn’t help but notice how carefully she held her red rose, caressing the little black ribbon. He knew who it must have been from, but managed to maintain a smile.
“Here, let me take that one for you,” he suggested, reaching out for her to give it to him, which she did.
Raoul neatly tucked it in the vase with the others. He glanced only briefly at the mirror and wondered if Erik might be behind it, possibly watching and listening to them even now. An idea suddenly came to him, and he decided to try it. He took Christine’s hand and kissed it. Erik fumed silently.
“You’re not busy Sunday, are you? Remember my parents are expecting you over for dinner. I’ll come for you around seven.”
Christine looked a little puzzled as she did not remember him ever mentioning this before, but Erik could not see her face. Her back was to the mirror. Before she could say anything, Raoul hugged her. This didn’t strike her as being anything unusual, so she returned the gesture. Raoul gently caressed the middle of her back and placed a kiss on her cheek before resting his chin on her shoulder. He closed his eyes and smiled against Christine’s soft curls, all the while facing the mirror.
Erik shook with fury and pressed his hand to the right side of his face, which at the moment was bare. He’d left the mask behind, feeling that it didn’t matter. Now he felt naked without it. He didn’t bother to wait for the two people in the room to say their good-byes.
I can’t watch another second of this.
Angry and hurt, he crept back down the path to his lair the way he’d come.
Christine waited for Erik that night for what seemed like forever. When she was too tired to hold her eyes open any longer, she left and went to bed. Perhaps he was tired or had work to do, she reasoned. The thought never crossed her mind that he might have been watching her chance meeting with Raoul and was offended by it.
Christine was excited to see the little note with the rose seal, lying on her dressing room vanity table the following afternoon. When she started to read, though, her heart sank.
Dear Christine,
It is with a heavy heart that I tell you this, but I cannot continue with these feelings and not express them. I made a mistake when I thought that we could be together. It was wrong of me to tell you that I loved you. The truth is that it has been my pleasure to teach you and watch you grow in your abilities as a singer. As much as I have tried, I know that I will never be able to care for you in the way that a man should care for the woman he wishes to be his life companion. I apologize if I gave you a wrong impression and hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me. Considering the circumstances, I believe it best that we not see each other again. Do not go looking for me. I will not be found.
Erik
He didn’t come for her the night before, and now this? Christine sank into the chair, her hands trembling as she clutched the note and pressed it against her heart. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen on the paper. Despair set in as she read it over again. This couldn’t be happening; it just wasn’t possible. Her Erik, her dear tutor and tender lover couldn’t be so cruel as to use her in such a manner, but here it was in his own writing that he did not want to be with her – never loved her to begin with. Perhaps he had only been curious as to what it would feel like to share intimacy with another person, and now that his curiosity was satisfied, he had realized that she wasn’t what he really needed. What would she do now without his affection and guidance when everything about this place reminded her of him? The tears flowed freely down her cheeks as she thought about what she should do.
