Chapter 16
The trees broke and scattered, a small grassy field extended for a few miles before the terrain turned rough and rose up toward a mountain path. Mountains filled the sky, snow-topped peeks scraped at the clouds. The clouds were dark and heavy, threatening serious storms for any who dared walk the treacherous trails of the hills.
Alice saw the mountain pass that lay ahead of her. It was hard not to see it, the mountain range filled her entire filed of vision. At that moment she was wishing she were back in Michelle’s cabin. At her left was Chester Kat, his own large eyes were full of intimidation. To her left Michelle shared the same expression. She had come along with Alice and Chester, albeit slightly unwillingly. After Alice had been restored to her normal height. Actually Alice thought she had gained a couple of inches and she liked it.
“Are you sure this is the only way to go?” She asked unsurely. Michelle nodded her head, even though she looked a little hesitant.
“I am afraid so. Beyond the mountain pass lay’s the valley where my soldiers who remain loyal to the queen of hearts shall hide in wait for their queen to return and lead them to war. We have to cross that path to reach that valley”
Alice rubbed at her face, she could feel a headache coming on. After a days walking her shoulder was sore, thanks to the added weight of new items within the bag. Two large bottles of shrink and growth tea, you never knew when they might come in handy, a selection of the larger kitchen knives from Michelle’s home and a lot of dried food, anything that would last a while. All of this added on top of everything else she was already carrying. Alice moved her bag to her other shoulder and sighed. “All right. Lets go.”
********************
A blizzard blew around them. Alice’s breath fogged in front of her. She couldn’t see the path in front of her anymore. The stone was only tiny flecks of grey in an endless sea of white. She wasn’t sure where she was or even if her companions were with her. They were supposed to be holding hands, but she had gone totally numb so long ago she didn’t remember what the sensation of touch was supposed to be. What little she could see of herself wasn’t pleasant. Her skin was turning blue from the cold and had cracked in a couple of places because of the relentless pounding of the glass-like snowflakes. Her blood had frozen to her skin within seconds. Thick purple lines of the dried blood snaked across her arms and legs. She was going to go insane. Her brain was lead in her skull. She almost savoured that feeling because it was the only feeling she actually had.
“We have to get off this mountain.” Cried a voice in the air, it was almost lost in the scream of the wind. Alice didn’t dare look back in case she slipped off the path ahead of her. “We have nowhere to go.” She screamed, hoping that she was heard. “We have to press on.”
Tears forced their way out of her eyes. She was so cold. She couldn’t even think straight anymore. The white around her was turning to black and she was beyond the point of caring anymore.
***************
The wind roared around her ears but something was different. Alice shivered and managed to find the will to open her eyes.
She was in a cave, a small fire was burning gently in front of her. Michelle and Chester were sitting and looking at her with concern. The mouth of the cave was still open and the blizzard was still blowing hard. She groaned softly. Her arms were still pale but they were no longer blue and that was an improvement. Her arms and legs were sore and covered with cracks in the flesh and in some places. Fresh red blood was running down in some places. The pain this was causing was welcome, it meant she was still alive.
“Where are we?” Alice asked as she shuffled closer to the fire. It hurt to move, but she was too cold to stay still.
“Still on the mountain.” Michelle said, rubbing her arms fiercely. “When you collapsed we found this shelter. We are waiting for the storm to subside before we set off again. I don’t think any of us would have lasted much longer out there.”
Alice hugged herself tightly and shivered violently. She felt sleepy. So tired. She lay back down, and her eyes closed again. She fell into a deep and disturbed sleep.
*****************
The next morning, the blizzard had blown down, but snow was still falling. Thick and heavy flakes drifted down along a gentle breeze. It all threatened to get worse.
“It doesn’t look like it’s going to get any lighter.” Michelle muttered as she looked out of the cave mouth. She rubbed her arms and nodded her head. Alice nodded and placed her bag over her shoulder.
“Alright then.” She said with a hesitant sigh. Every part of her body was still hurting from her frosty escapade the day before. The thin dress Michelle had provided for her hadn’t done anything to keep her warm. Michelle looked almost as bad as Alice felt but she had a slight added bonus of not suffering from cracked skin. She had been sheltered from the worst of the cold by Alice’s own body. “Let’s begin.”
Alice took a step out of the cave and shivered in the cold air. Snowflakes landed on her shoulders and arms and didn’t melt, she was too cold.
“We must move swiftly.” Michelle said, taking her place behind Alice. “It may be another day or so before we make it over the mountain. Then there will be other problems.”
Alice didn’t like the sound of ‘other problems’. Nor did she want to know what they were. Her mood was down enough without knowing what particular worse things were lying ahead. She put her best foot forward and marched as quickly as her sore body could manage.
***************
First it was snow, now it was rain. Alice preferred the rain to the snow, even the snow, even though it was just as annoying. The mountain pass was almost half a day behind them and the swampy land stretched away beyond the horizon in what was obviously days more walking. The air around them was turning dark around them. The rain clouds were too thick for any of the group to see the sun but they all knew it was setting. But none of them wanted to stop, the swamp around them was a series of muddy paths surrounded by deep pools of stinking water that had some kind of orange scum floating on top. Coarse yellowed grass grew in patches around the edges of the pools. The air had a strong hint of rotten eggs making all of them lose any appetite they were supposed to have after a day of walking.
Alice shivered and turned to her companions. “It’s getting dark and frankly I’m exhausted. Perhaps we should stop for the night.”
Michelle looked a little less than happy at the prospect of staying in the swamp for the night. She couldn’t remember why, her memory still had a few holes in it. She couldn’t recall all the knowledge that she once held as the queen of hearts. She was exhausted too, her feet felt like lumps of lead on the end of her body. “Alice. I feel I must tell you, that I believe that there are dangers around in this area.”
“What kind of dangers?” Alice demanded. A natural reaction. She was not happy when Michelle shrugged her shoulders.
“I can’t remember. I’m trying but I can’t remember.”
Alice thought hard for a couple of minutes, gradually her pace slowed and she came to a halt on the driest patch of mud she could find.
“We’re all so tired. I myself cannot walk much further. I think our best option is to take turns sleeping.”
“I’ll take the first shift mistress.” Chester spoke up. He looked eager to provide some contribution to the adventure. During their whole time in the mountains he had stayed at the back of the line.
Alice smiled at him and nodded her head.
“Thank you. Chester.” She and Michelle found the most comfortable spot they could and tried their best to sleep.
***************
In the blackness of the night the ice cold drove Alice out of her sleep. She could see Chester’s shadow in the darkness. He looked at her and a shape indicated a nod of the head. His cat-like eyes could see perfectly in the darkness.
“You should be sleeping Mistress.” He whispered.
“I know.” Alice mumbled. She rubbed at her arms and shivered violently. “So cold.”
“Mistress.” Chester whispered violently. “Don’t move.”
Alice shivered, but didn’t move any more than that. Chester rose to his knees and held a hand up, his claws were at the ready. Alice could hear what he could see. A slithering noise of some kind of thing moving through a nearby pool of water.
There was a loud screech and something flew up out of the pool. Alice didn’t even get to see what it as Chester jumped forward and slashed the creature clean in two. Alice couldn’t see what it was for certain but she could make out the shape of a large worm-like creature, it’s two halves were thrashing wildly on the muddy earth, fighting to stay alive. Alice rolled away from it and grabbed Michelle’s arm.
“WAKE UP.” She screamed. “UP NOW!”
Michelle’s eyes snapped open in a daze and she looked around in fearful confusion.
Two more high-pitched screeches rose through the air and two more worm-things leapt out of the water at the two women. Chester leapt forward and grabbed them both, slicing open their soft flesh with his claws. The air became full of screams of the water worms. The pools around them began to churn and bubble with the frenzied movement. Alice staggered to her feet and dragged Michelle up with her. Five more creatures leapt out of the water. Michelle screamed as one landed on her shoulder, three long barbs boring into her flesh, sucking blood and taking chunks of flesh and muscle. She reached around and tore it free, feeling fire and lightning bolts of agony as a hole chunk of her shoulder meat was pulled away with it. As soon as the worm was pulled away three more leapt onto her, digging their teeth into her body, eating her alive. Alice screamed, trying n vain to get the filthy creatures off her. Five where tearing chunks out of her. Chester slashed his claws, slicing every one of the worms he could reach before they got to his mistress. He had no time to deal with the six that were ripping their way across his body.
“RUN.” Alice screamed, her cry barely audible over the cries of the worms. She staggered forward, the filthy creatures were trying to eat the muscular flesh of her legs. She grabbed her bag and moved as quickly as she could. More and more pools of water around them began to churn as more and more of the monstrous things were awakened and drawn to the noise and smell of blood.
Alice couldn’t see where she was going. She couldn’t tell if Michelle and Chester were behind her. She screamed as her foot missed the semi-solid muddy ground and she stumbled into a deep pool of rancid water. A taste like maggots hit her mouth and her nostrils burned as the liquid rushed up inside her. She could feel the creatures squirming around her. Their bodies were long and slimy. Alice could feel their barbed mouths prodding her. She was in their environment now. They didn’t need to just leap and bite, they could now search for them best flesh. Four burrowed into her thighs at once. Alice sank under the surface as her legs were set on fire with the agony and she couldn’t kick anymore.
