My Little Wolf Sister helped me with this chapter...I thank her because I was lost.
Anita took Richard’s hand in hers and gazed about the room, “First, this is not a spectator sport. While Richard still lives I am Lupa of the Thronnos Rokke Clan and I will not have the magics we call be affected by pack discord, greed, or ill will on anyone’s part…you will all leave.”
Shang-Da looked down at Anita with disdain in his dark eyes, “I will not be ordered about by a Lupa who cares nothing for our pack until it suits her…be assured when Richard dies, your services will no longer be required…I will stay.” Sylvie stepped forward and was about to speak when a low-growl rumbled behind Anita.
“Ma Petite”, Jean-Claude’s wary voice brought Anita’s attention back to the wounded Ulfric that he held lovingly and protectively in his arms.
Richard may have been weak, but his beast, determined to support his mate, rose in the amber of his eyes, eyes that were now locked on Shang-Da and Sylvie. “Anita is Lupa, obey her now or so help me if I survive…you won’t,” he softly warned them, the threat very real in his voice.
The room fell silent as Richard settled back into Jean-Claude’s lap…near death and he still found the strength to defend her. Anita’s heart warmed and her eyes welled with tears. Never before had Richard risked so much for her without being asked. He was willing to kill for her and for him that was a difficult choice for him to acknowledge.
The past few days played in Anita’s mind like a highlight reel…Richard was willing to sacrifice his own life for her, closing down the marks and making it impossible for her to track him; in the fields when she was threatened by the demon he pushed his own pain aside to come to her aid; and the wound that now threatened to take his life was courtesy of Niley…courtesy of the demon’s determination to kill Anita. However, instead of her lying at death’s door it was Richard. A new resolve took root in Anita mind, her beloved Richard would not die, not today.
Anita addressed Rafael and Louie, “Please escort everyone out of this house that does not need to be here. Keep them at the lupanar until I contact you.” Rafael’s eyes met the Lupa's. He bowed in both respect and agreement. The pack members filed out slowly their eyes on their alpha pair; some eyes filled with hope; others with conquest.
Jamil was the last to leave; he approached the bed and bowed in respect to his Lupa and Ulfric, “A warrior’s luck to all of you and peace for our future.” Jamil took both Richard and Anita’s hands in his own and pushed his power into them, a final offering to his King and Queen, and quietly left the room.
“Jean-Claude, once I’m able to heal him enough we will need to take the fourth mark immediately. What is required besides our presence?”
Jean-Claude’s eyes embraced his beloved ma petite, a warm smile glowing in them. “It is meant to be a structured and meaningful ceremony but as we are in a unique situation," he explained. "The main things we require are my ceremonial golden dagger, an exchange of our blood and body and three witnesses.”
Anita glanced quickly around the room, “Dr. Lillian will need to stay in case Richard needs traditional medical aid when this is over, so she can stand witness, Asher is your second so he should participate also.”
Anita glanced quickly at her leopards and then back into Jean-Claude’s eyes…he understood her intention but the hardness in his eyes showed her in no uncertain terms that the presence of any of her leopards would neither be constructive or wise.
Anita released a long breath, “How long will it take Jason to get here with the dagger?”
Asher chuckled, “Mon Cheri, have you ever ridden in a car with Jason…call him now and he will be here in fifteen minutes…the police in tow perhaps, but he will be here.”
Jean-Claude instructed Asher to call Jason immediately and dispatch him to deliver the dagger.
“Ma petite, I believe Richard would approve of Jason standing as our third witness. He carries the strength of the pack and will be interested only in his Ulfric’s recovery…not political aspirations.”
“Agreed”, Anita looked at both Micah and Nathaniel. Nathaniel’s violet eyes were pleading with Anita not to dismiss him, but she needed to concentrate on Richard and Jean-Claude right now and would not tolerate any ill will, intentional or not.
Micah placed his arm on Nathaniel’s shoulder, “Come on Nate, we are not a part of this…Anita, we will wait at home.”
Nathaniel twisted from Micah’s grip, “No, Micah, no; we should not be dismissed, we are a part of Anita’s life, she is our Nimir-Ra…what if the ardeur rises and she needs our help? This is just one more way for them to shut us out.”
Asher was across the room before Anita had a chance to blink. “Once again, ma petite kitty you insist that this be about you…you say you did not mean to inflict your will through the ardeur but once again you refuse to see the truth," he growled softly. "This is not about you but you constantly insist that Richard and Jean-Claude respect the places that you, Micah, and the pard hold in Anita’s life yet you refuse to extend the same respect to them. You dance around Jean-Claude because you fear him, but you use Richard’s love for Anita and his fear of her repercussion to control his place in her life. They are a triumvirate, a powerful entity, but above all of that they are a core family that loves and respects each other above and withstanding all others. I love Jean-Claude and Anita and I am thankful for my place in their lives, but even I clearly see that the three of them share something that I will never be able to replace, nor should I want to. Anita is Richard’s Lupa, his mate…you are neither yet she gives you the love and support you desperately need. Grow up and give them the respect you ask of yourself, your place is not here right now but hers is.”
Nathaniel attempted to stand his ground against Asher, but the feral look in the golden vampires eyes combined with the disappointed glare on Anita’s face sobered him quickly. Micah once again took his shoulder and began to lead him from the room, but paid his respects to the Ulfric before leaving,
“I don’t know what the fourth mark will bring, but she needs us all, Richard; please don’t leave me alone to navigate this sea of fools.” A small laugh escaped Richard’s lips followed by a wince of pain as his eyes met Micah’s in a show of mutual respect and thanks for the understanding only another alpha could provide. Both he and Nathaniel left them to their momentous tasks.
