Alice felt Jasper crawl in next to her sometime in the middle of the night. She immediately rolled to face him, not bothering to hide her tears. He immediately pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. She immediately curled into him and pulled him as close as she could. “I’m sorry I ran off.” Jasper said quietly.
“I knew you would.” She sniffled. “I saw it.”
“I just don’t even want to think about you becoming one of us right now. I know you’ve seen it but…”
“Do you not want to be with me forever?” She cried.
“Alice, baby, no! That’s not what I mean. I would love for you to be one of us…well I’d love to be with you forever anyway but that’s not what I meant. I want this to be your choice. Not because of necessity but because you chose to be here and be with me and be one of us forever. You haven’t been here long enough to make that choice yet. I want you to know me, to know all about me and to understand the consequences before you make that decision. I want you to have the time required to adjust to it before you actually have to be around other people. You don’t know how hard it is to be around humans constantly without being able to feed. It is our basic instinct. Humans smell better to us than any animal ever could. Your blood smells better to me than any human I’ve ever met but I would rather smell that and fight my instincts every minute of every day than have you give up the choice to be one of us.”
“I do choose it, Jasper.”
“I know you do, I can feel it but you are not choosing it because you want to. You are choosing it because you feel you have to.”
“I don’t have to but I don’t want to fight with you right now. I had an idea tonight. Everyone thought it was a good one.”
“If it means you don’t have to be turned yet and you will be safe, let’s hear it.”
Alice told him her idea and watched as he began to smile. He listened intently and nodded occasionally. After she finished he even gave suggestions as to how it could be accomplished. They came up with a course of action and made their plans. Knowing he would have to leave in a few hours to accomplish getting her documents, he opted to hold her all night.
“I promise you, no matter what it takes, I will keep you safe, Alice.”
“I know you will, Jasper, but if it means sacrificing yourself; I won’t let you. I would never let you go to protect me. Not you. I can’t loose you.”
“I won’t go anywhere, baby. I will stay right by your side, Alice. I have waited a very long time for you. You are the one. You are my soul mate. I feel better just being around you. I feel…human if that makes sense. You make me feel things I never thought I would or could feel. Without you I would be lost. I didn’t know happiness or purpose until I met you. You are my purpose. To live each day to make you happy and to see you smile. That is everything to me. I love you, Alice.” Her eyes widened as he spoke and she gave a muffled gasp as his vow of love came out. Tears came to her eyes. She stared into his dark gold eyes and touched his cheek.
Jasper lay completely still as she looked him over feeling her wonder and knowing that his statement had not been met badly. Her eyes went over his slightly curly and floppy longish blond hair. Over his chiseled face with his high cheekbones, startling eyes and full lips. She looked down at his chest and noted that while he was not beefy like Emmett, he had definite muscle and was strong. His waist was trim and his body lean but not lanky. He was beautiful and perfect. She looked back into his eyes. While she looked at him all the time, if he glanced at her at all, her eyes were locked with his. Alice felt she could drown in his eyes and even tended to lean in when their eyes met. It seemed that his eyes were usually black when he looked at her but she didn’t mind so much. Alice felt it was a different kind of hunger that struck him when he looked at her. She wasn’t sure exactly what that meant but she knew that she wanted Jasper to be the one to show her.
“Jasper, I love you too.” She whispered. He smiled and touched her face, cupping her cheek and rubbing his thumb over her lips. “Can I tell you something?”
“Of course.”
“I had visions of you. I have for a long time. Ever since I was a kid, when things got bad, I’d dream of you and you would always tell me things were going to be okay. That you would find me. When I got put into the mental institution, it got stronger. I started to dream of you more and more. You would tell me to hang in there and that it wasn’t long and you’d see me. You would tell me that you were getting closer.”
“How long were you in that place, Alice?”
“A year, I think. It was very hard being in there. They didn’t understand me at all. I tried to explain my visions at first but they didn’t want to hear it. They just wanted me to stop having them. I don’t know why though, my family had declared me dead; it wasn’t like I could go home. What would they say, oh everyone, this is our dead daughter Mary; oops looks like she wasn’t dead after all.” Jasper gently wiped away some tears.
“They just wanted someone to practice their torture on. My parent’s had signed away all rights to me so the doctors could do anything to me. One of the doctors would ask me all about my visions. At first I told them different things that set them off, they would use that. They would threaten me or even just decide in front of me the next thing they were going to do to me. They knew that would set off another vision and so I would have one and then they would punish me.
“They would lock me in my room for long periods of time with no food but plenty of water and not let me use the bathroom. They would turn out the lights and leave me in the dark for days except when they were seeing me.”
“They made you both love and fear both the dark and the light.” Jasper said knowingly. “You feared what was in the dark but you knew what the light would bring.” He kept a very tight lid on his rage knowing that at this moment it wouldn’t do her any good and she needed him. He swore to himself though that he would pay every one of them back for the damage they had done to this amazing girl.
“They made me eat out of a bowl on the floor and wouldn’t let me use my hands. They said that since I was insisting on acting like an animal in not controlling myself, I would have to eat like one. Sometimes they even fed me pet food.” Alice said softly and she looked down in humiliation. Jasper instantly covered her with love.
“There is no reason for you to be humiliated. They should. They are the animals, Alice, not you. You are bigger and better than all of them. Don’t you see that?”
“Only since I met you.” She answered honestly. He smiled at her.
“Bru….Bruce…” She stuttered and he felt her fear and held her tighter. “He umm…he would strap me to my bed and um…he uh…he would call me names and then he would…” She couldn’t finish.
“He raped you.” Jasper said flatly. She nodded. Jasper’s grip tightened on her. He had known most of this but hearing it from her mouth was different. It made it all more real. He heard her gasp in pain and realized he was holding her too tightly. “I’m sorry, baby, I just get so angry at the thought of what they did to you.”
“Do you still want me?” She asked with a broken voice.
“More than ever.” Jasper answered without hesitation. “I want to show you what love can be like. I want to make love to you and show you all the joys and none of the pain that my body can give you. I will always treat you like gold. I will try to never hurt you.”
“You won’t hurt me, Jazz. You couldn’t.” She bit her lip softly making the blood rise to the surface in that spot and Jasper had a hard time tearing his eyes away. “Do you think it’s weird that I had visions of you?”
“No. I was looking for you all my life. I knew there was something out there calling to me but I didn’t know what or who it was until you flew around that corner. I found my purpose and my home that day. I knew for sure why I had come to the Cullens. It was for you.”
“I love you, Jasper.”
“I love you too, Alice. Get some sleep baby. I’ll be right here until I have to go and then I’ll be back as quickly as I can tomorrow.” She nodded softly and kissed him. With a sigh she drifted off to sleep.
