:) I don't really have anything to say, except this is very short and I may have another chapter tonight.
I decided to contact the funeral home that Monday. They hadn’t contacted me, and I wanted to set things up the way Gramps had specified. He had showed me his will once, so I would know his wishes. He wanted to be cremated and scattered in the woods behind the house. He had lived in Forks most of his life; he wanted his resting place to be his home. I also knew he had left everything to me, including the house. I didn’t have the money for a big funeral, and there was no reason for one, so I decided to have a private ceremony. The people at the funeral home seemed to understand, though they were disappointed in their monetary loss.
I took Gramps’ urn with me as I walked out to Jasper’s car a few days later. He was taking me back to my house because I was spreading the ashes. Jasper had offered to drive me so I wouldn’t be alone. I appreciated his concern; this was something I had to do.
We quickly reached the house. I jumped out and made my way to the trail we had always used.
A few feet in, I reached into the urn and pulled out a handful of gray dust. The wind sifted it from between my fingers. I felt a lone tear stream down my face. I walked further and held out another handful of ashes.
I followed the same routine until I reached the midpoint of the trail, where it looped around and headed back towards the house. The midpoint was a giant, gnarled oak. Some of its lower branches were curved into two comfortable seats, complete with a back. Each seat could hold at least two people. I took the rest of the ashes and spread them around the base of the tree.
I sat on the larger ‘seat’ and set the empty urn at my feet. I closed my eyes and leaned back against the branch that created the ‘back’ of the ‘chair’. I felt a cool touch on my knee, but I didn’t open my eyes. The hand moved up to settle on my thigh while a cold body sat next to me on the thick branch. I touched Jasper’s hand with mine, and he laced our fingers together.
We sat that way until I sighed and opened my eyes.
“Gramps and I used to come out here to talk,” I said as Jasper silently helped me stand.
“I can see why. It’s very peaceful,” Jasper replied. I smiled slightly as I remembered when I had said the exact same phrase.
I placed the urn at the base of the tree. It was natural clay, so it would return itself to the soil.
“It always has been.” I took one last look at the tree before I turned and walked down the trail to finish the loop. Jasper walked beside me, hand-in-hand.
When we returned to the car, I rotated myself to face Jasper. He watched me curiously as I slid my hand up his arm to the back of his neck. Slowly, I pulled his face to mine. It was surprising to me that he didn’t take charge. He let me maneuver his lips into a languid kiss. I wrapped my other arm around his neck and deepened the kiss. He responded enthusiastically. When he parted his lips, I slipped my tongue inside to dance with his. He moaned at my insistence, and I quietly chuckled at the effect I had on him. The rest of the world was deaf to my ears. I heard nothing but my breathing and felt nothing but Jasper. His hands were resting on the small of my back. I felt one drift lower to grab my rear and pull me tightly against his body. It was my turn to moan. He smiled and pulled his lips from mine, only to kiss down my neck. When he reached my pulse point, he stepped away from me. I whimpered at the loss.
“We need to get back before it gets dark,” he murmured when I finally opened my eyes.
“Can we continue this when we get home?” I asked. His eyes darkened and his pupils widened with lust.
“…Maybe. We have to get there first.” I smiled and jumped into the car.
“Then let’s go.” He chuckled at my impatience, but easily complied.
Heehee. Uh-oh. What're they up to?
certaintragedy--Hey! New reviewer. Thanks!
Antigone--Thank you. Yes, there will be more on Whitaker's memory, though I'm not sure when... An
yway, it's not just how he is. There is a LOT more to it than that. But that's all I can say. ;)
