Bella didn’t sleep very well that night. Images of Jacob and Liam kept running through her mind. It just didn’t seem right. The image didn’t fit. She did want Jacob to try and get along with her vampire friends, but to be romantically involved with one of them….
And that kiss—it had seemed so…animalistic. Compared to that, every kiss Edward had ever given her seemed so tame and cold. There had to be more to it than just a trial period. What was Liam thinking? What was he doing?
That morning before school she pulled her uncle-to-be aside. “What do you want with Jacob?” she asked. She needed to know, or it was going to drive her crazy. “Why are you suddenly so interested in him?”
Liam only smirked. “What makes you think there’s anything sudden about my interest? Why does everyone think of me as some villain? Maybe I helped both of you because I consider you a friend and I happen to be very attracted to Jacob. Maybe I wanted you both to be happy. I haven’t made a move until now, for your sake. But since Edward is back you’ve made it very clear that you’re only interested in Jacob as a friend. That means he’s up for grabs.”
Most of what he said was true. Even if Edward hadn’t come back Liam would have fought for his soul mate, but she didn’t need to know that. Bella already seemed angry enough. “He’s not some toy or trophy!” she shouted.
“I know. That day I took you to La Push, he and I had a little chat while you were waiting for him. He wanted to know why I was helping you when the rest of my family was doing everything they could to keep the two of you apart. I told him how I felt; that part of the reason I was helping you was because I wanted to see him happy too. Then you asked him yet again to let go of old prejudices. He called later that night and we set something up. Of course, I don’t see why any of this matters, unless you’re having second thoughts about Edward….”
Bella’s face turned beet-red. “No, I’m—I mean, I don’t—” She growled and stormed away. Liam could only shake his head and laugh. Lying to an empath was an exercise in futility. The girl was confused about her feelings for Jacob, and as Liam had predicted, Jacob suddenly becoming unavailable was forcing Bella to face those feelings instead of ignoring them.
Trying to get through the day without Edward was tough for Bella. She missed him but knew he needed to hunt. This was one complication that would disappear once she was changed. She’d be able to go hunting with him.
Lunch was a welcome relief. If nothing else, she could talk to Alice. Bella had somewhat gotten over her anger about being kidnapped. But as she crossed the school grounds she saw a dark figure out in the parking lot. She took a few steps closer and saw that it was Jacob.
She ran over to him, forgetting about everything else for a moment. “What are you doing here?” she asked.
Jacob grinned. “I decided to skip school and wondered if you wanted to join me.”
Bella bit her lip and glanced back to the cafeteria, where Alice was waiting for her. Would Alice risk a public scene to keep her from leaving? There was only way to find out. Bella hopped onto the back of Jacob’s bike and held on tight as he took off.
Jacob headed straight for the Cullen home. Bella was a little disappointed, but figured at least she’d be able to spend more time with Jacob. She expected Liam to come out, but he didn’t. Maybe he was off hunting too.
Jacob walked with her away from the house to the edge of the woods. “You’re probably wondering why I brought you here in the middle of the afternoon,” he said, blushing a little. “I wanted to talk, just you and me.”
“There are lots of better places for us to do that.”
“I know.” His blush deepened. “I kind of missed Liam too, but I asked him to give us a moment.”
Bella frowned. “You really like him, don’t you?”
Jacob nodded. “More than I thought I would.”
“Does this mean you’re okay with me and Edward? You wouldn’t want to be a hypocrite, would you?” She gave him a hopeful smile. Maybe now that he’d taken a walk in her shoes he’d understand.
Jacob was quiet for a moment. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I understand now how you can love him, but it’s your future plans I’m worried about.”
Bella groaned. She’d been hoping the lectures would end. “I thought you weren’t going to be a hypocrite. Do I need to tell your dad where you really were last night?”
Jacob flinched. “No, that’s not what I—what I mean is, you know about the treaty, right? I may understand a little better, but I can’t speak for the rest of the pack. They’ll try to kill you, and maybe even me. I don’t know if I could bear that.”
Bella swallowed hard. “It’s still my decision. I have until next spring.”
“Next spring?” Jacob clenched his jaw and ground his teeth. “That’s not a lot of time.”
“I’d do it sooner, but that was the time frame Liam gave me.”
Jacob balled his fists and took a few deep breaths. “Why are you so eager to change? Have you even thought about the people you’d be leaving behind?”
It was Bella’s turn to flinch. “Yes, I’ve thought about them. I’ll miss my parents, but the Cullens are my family now, and as long as things work out between you and Liam, you’ll be my friend too, I hope.”
Jacob growled. “You haven’t thought about them at all! You have no idea how much losing you will hurt everyone who cares about you.”
“And you do?”
“Yeah, I do. When Edward first came back, I lost you. And how do you think the rest of the Cullens’ families felt when they became what they are? Carlisle’s death drove Liam to seek revenge. Liam’s lover died of a broken heart. Can you imagine what that boy went through, feeling the life leaving his body but not caring because he believed he would see his love again soon? But he didn’t. Liam wasn’t on the other side. He was here, existing as a walking corpse.”
Bella didn’t know what to say. “I’m sorry they suffered, but I’m going to come up with something to tell everyone. I’m not just going to disappear.”
Jacob had to take a step back so he wouldn’t lose his temper. “Just promise me you’ll give it a little more thought. Your decision will affect a lot of lives.”
Bella bit her lip and nodded. “Okay, if it’s really that important to you. But please try to see my side of things too. Victoria is trying to kill me, and I need protection. I want to be able to protect myself. You don’t have to worry. You aren’t nearly as breakable as me.”
Jacob sighed. “No, I’m not, but I still wouldn’t change for Liam. I don’t think he would ever ask me to either.”
“Edward doesn’t want me to be changed.”
Jacob laughed softly. “Well, that’s one reason for me to not hate him, I guess.”
Liam came outside carrying a suitcase. “Ready to go?”
Jacob nodded and turned back to Bella. “I may be with Liam, but I still love you. Never forget that.” He gave her a soft smile and climbed into Liam’s car. He watched Bella head inside as they drove away.
“You okay?” Liam asked. “You were talking pretty loudly.”
“Sorry,” Jacob mumbled. “I just really want Bella to stay human, no matter what happens between you and me.”
Liam nodded in understanding. “Most of us agree. She seems hell-bent on changing though.”
“Just please help me try and stop her,” Jacob said as he reached for Liam’s hand.
“Your wish is my command.”
The rest of the drive was quiet. Jacob had thought they would go shopping some place like Port Angeles, but Liam drove straight to Seattle. They made it in an impressive amount of time. It seemed like vampires liked to do everything fast.
Liam drove straight to the hotel he’d booked for the weekend. “We’re not going back tonight?” Jacob asked when they pulled into the parking lot.
“No, Carlisle and I thought maybe it would be better if you weren’t there when Edward returned. He may not have a reason to be jealous any more, but he still might be angry.”
“So Carlisle knows?”
Liam laughed. “I can’t keep anything from him. Yes, he knows everything, even about our past.”
Jacob got out of the car and was hit with a sickening stench. “Does it always smell like this here?” he asked, wrinkling his nose.
“No, it doesn’t,” Liam answered, taking deep breaths. “I think the problem is a lot worse than we thought.”
Jacob followed Liam into the hotel. It was kind of exciting, in a way. Port Angeles was the furthest away from home Jacob had ever been until now. Being in a city was interesting, but it made him a little nervous too. He was alone with Liam in a strange place.
He waited until they were alone in the room to say anything. “Liam, I don’t know what you had planned for this weekend, but I’m not sure I’m ready for—”
Liam cut him off with a cold finger on his lips. “Don’t worry about that. My only plan is to have a good time. I’m not going to force you into anything.”
Jacob felt a little bit better. He had no reason not to trust Liam. He leaned down and placed a light kiss on Liam’s cheek. “Are we going shopping now?”
“Of course,” Liam grinned. “You need better clothes.”
Once Liam got settled in they went straight to the nearest mall. Despite the recent string of mysterious murders, it was still crowded. Jacob reached out to take Liam’s hand so they wouldn’t lose each other. Jacob thought they were only going to buy him one outfit, but Liam had other ideas. The vampire dragged him through racks of clothes, occasionally stopping to pick something off the rack.
“You don’t have to do this,” Jacob protested as he was being shoved into a changing room.
“But I want to,” Liam insisted with a soft smile. “You deserve it.”
Jacob didn’t know what to say. He was used to always being there for Bella and getting nothing in return but her company. “I still don’t know. This is too much.”
“If you don’t get your ass in there and start trying on those clothes, you’re gonna hurt my feelings.”
“All right, I’m going,” Jacob sighed. His arms were full of clothes, and he felt a bit overwhelmed. He also felt like a walking Ken-doll, with Liam telling him what to try on and critiquing everything. After about an hour and a half the clothes had been sorted into yes and no piles.
“Are we done yet?” Jacob asked. He was enjoying spending time with Liam, but he wasn’t comfortable with all this money being spent on him. He really was taking a walk in Bella’s shoes.
“Nope. We haven’t been to the shoe department yet.” Liam grinned evilly.
“You like spending money, don’t you?”
“I like spoiling my men,” Liam said as he dragged Jacob over to look at shoes.
Jacob felt a tingly sensation in the pit of his stomach when Liam claimed him. In a way, he kind of liked it. It was strange, especially given their current circumstances, but Jacob decided to live in the moment and enjoy it.
By the end of the afternoon they were both loaded down with bags. Jacob had to admit to himself that this was the happiest he’d ever felt. Not even spending a day with Bella had raised his spirits this much. It was as Sam had said: gravity no longer existed. It was that one person who kept you on earth. It had become pretty much impossible for Jacob to deny the truth any longer. He had imprinted on a vampire.
He had no idea what he was going to tell his dad, let alone the rest of the pack, but he decided to put those thoughts out of his mind for the rest of the evening and have fun. Who knew when he’d be able to relax and be carefree again?
“So where are we going?” he asked once they were back in their hotel room and Liam was digging through the new clothes, most likely picking out what he was going to dress Jacob in.
“One of my favorite clubs,” Liam answered, not looking up from his task.
“A club? But Liam, I’m only sixteen. Sure, physically I look much older, but as far as the law’s concerned….”
“Don’t worry about it.” Liam gave him a reassuring smile. “You’re with me. I didn’t have time to get you a fake ID, but I’ll get you in. There’s a reason Carlisle calls me ‘The Master’. We won’t have a problem. Put those on.” He gestured to a small pile of clothes before disappearing into the bathroom.
Jacob sighed and shook his head. Liam had left him a pair of black slacks and a purple T-shirt with a swirl pattern. He put the clothes on and examined himself in the vanity mirror. He had to admit that although it wasn’t something he’d normally wear, it did look nice. No matter what, the evening would definitely be interesting.
The bathroom door opened, and as Liam stepped out Jacob’s jaw hit the floor. Liam was dressed in a pair of ripped blue jeans with a black leather belt, and a black leather vest with round silver buttons. He’d also put on eyeliner, which made his gaze seem really intense. “What do you think?” Liam asked, turning around in a full circle with an impish grin on his face.
“Makes me want to go howl at the moon,” Jacob joked, but he was partly serious. “I’ve never been attracted to another man before in my entire life, and yet right now I’m half tempted to pin you to the bed and rip those clothes right off you.”
Liam practically glowed. “We can save that thought for later. I wanna go have fun.”
Jacob found himself being dragged out to the car for the second time that day. “Do you come here a lot?” he asked, noticing how at home Liam seemed to be.
“Once in a while. I’m more nomadic than the rest of my family, so I go lots of places.”
Jacob frowned. “So you’re not gonna stay in Forks long, either?” That was a painful thought.
Liam gently patted Jacob’s thigh. “I’ll stay as long as you want me to. I move around a lot because there usually isn’t anything tying me to a specific place, but I could make an exception for you.”
They pulled into a crowded parking lot. It seemed like the way people were dealing with the recent murders was to travel in packs. Heads turned in their direction, and Jacob could tell a lot of the men staring at them were jealous of him. Even though most of them had dates of their own, they wanted to be with the mysterious hot blond.
Jacob started to get nervous while they waited in line. Even though Liam assured him there wouldn’t be a problem, he felt sure they wouldn’t get in. His heart was pounding in his chest when it was their turn to go in. The bouncer requested their IDs and Liam handed his over. His was definitely a fake; no one would believe he was over three hundred years old.
When the bouncer turned his attention to Jacob he froze. “Sweetie, you forgot your wallet at the hotel again, didn’t you?” Liam said in a chiding tone. “I swear….”
“Sorry, I can’t let you in without an ID.” The bouncer frowned.
Liam leaned against the wall in a seductive manner. “I understand it’s the rules, but pretty please? We’re only in town for the weekend. You wouldn’t really make us drive all the way back to the hotel, would you? By then the club will be full, and we’ll have to spend all night out here.” For added effect he pouted and leaned in closer.
The bouncer seemed conflicted as he glanced at all the people behind them. Then he took a quick look at a piece of paper in his hand. “Oh, it seems like this is your lucky night. You should have told me right away that you two were on the V.I.P. list,” he said loud enough for the other people to hear him. Then he waved them in with a subtle wink.
Liam smiled and winked back on his way through the door. “Told you,” he whispered in Jacob’s ear.
Jacob knew he shouldn’t have doubted Liam. All vampires could easily dazzle humans, but Liam seemed to have a real talent for it.
Jacob could hardly believe his eyes once they were inside. The club was dimly lit, with loud music playing. There was a dance floor, and then an area dotted with tables. There was even a bar at the far end. “Wanna dance or get a drink first?” Liam asked.
“I shouldn’t drink.” Jacob shook his head at the idea, though it did sound tempting.
“Why not? With your metabolism, you should be fine.”
Jacob thought it all over. He probably wouldn’t get another chance for a very long time. “Okay, I guess. Maybe one.”
Liam took him over to the bar and ordered him a rum and Coke. The bartender didn’t ask for ID, but as Jacob thought about it, it seemed a little silly since IDs were checked at the door. He took a cautious sip and found it wasn’t too bad. He could hardly even tell there was any alcohol in it.
Once Jacob let himself relax he started to have fun. He and Liam just talked for a little while at the bar before heading out to the dance floor. By then Jacob had downed three rum and Cokes. He wasn’t sure if he was drunk, but he did feel a little funny.
He liked how Liam rubbed up against him while they danced, and before he knew it he had a bulge in his pants. Normally he would have felt really self-conscious, but right then he was incredibly relaxed and content. The only thing on his mind was exploring Liam’s cool skin with his hands, and Liam didn’t seem to mind. Jacob had even forgotten all about the original reason they were there.

A/N: Sorry for the slow update. Lucky me was sick with the flu over Christmas this year. Thank you to everyone who reviewed. It makes my muse happy. My beta says I’m evil for ending the chapter just before the juicy part, and I can’t exactly argue…
