Things definitely could have gone better when we first met the leader of the Varden. The man was tall and dark skinned, and very lethal looking. There was only one other person in all of Alagaesia that I was afraid of, and that was Galbatorix. This man terrified me almost as badly.
The moment he laid eyes on Murtagh he ordered him arrested, waving away Eragon's protests. And of course, an unarmed female didn't seem important enough to allow to protest. Until I found my voice just as the guards were dragging Murtagh out of the door.
"If you arrest him, you might as well arrest me!"
All eyes turned to me in surprise. Murtagh shook his head. "Don't do it Artemis. This is for the best. Just let it be."
The leader of the Varden, Ajihad, peered at me. "And why should I arrest you? I have been informed that you submitted to the testing and passed."
"I've been wondering about that myself actu--" My words were cut off as Eragon clapped his hand over my mouth.
"She's just upset. Ignore her," he smiled. 'What are you doing? Are you trying to get yourself killed?'
I shoved away from the boy. "If Murtagh is being for imprisoned for things beyond his control, even after all he has done for us on the way here, then its only fair that we all have the same treatment. After all, that's what the Varden is all about, right?"
"What are you on about, girl?" A tall man in armor behind Ajihad scoffed.
"Did they not tell you what they discovered during our testing, as you call it?"
Ajihad shifted, looking at me closely. "They told us what was relevant. Eragon is a Dragon Rider and you had an unfortunate dalliance on your adventures that led to your... awkward position."
I stared at him incredulously before I burst out laughing. The men eyed me warily until I was able to regain control, hiccupping slightly and wiping tears from my face. "An unfortunate dalliance? That's what they said? Well I guess you could consider being raped and impregnated by Galbatorix unfortunate, so I will give him that."
Tension sang through the air as every man reached for their weapons. Eragon tensed, and, behind us, Murtagh hung his head with a sigh. Ajihad stepped forward until he stood directly in front of me, his dark eyes bored into mine. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, did they leave that part out?" I smiled sweetly.
"They mentioned you were carrying," he replied tersely, making a small motion with his hand. The armored man behind Ajihad left the room. "They failed to mention circumstances."
"Well, now you know. I think it unfair that you are going to throw Murtagh in prison for circumstances beyond his control, and let me walk freely. That's not fair to him. He at least proved that he was a good man. What proof do you have that I am not truly a spy, considering now that you know how flawed your testing process is."
Eragon grabbed my arm and pulled me back toward him. "Are you insane? Think of what you are saying!"
I pulled away sharply. "I am! I am trying to save our friend from unlawful imprisonment!" I turned back to Ajihad. "Just think of the possibilities, sir. How many new recruits have you gained recently, and how many of them were tested by the same man we were? What other kind of information has been withheld from you?"
Ajihad took a step back, looking appalled. Just then, the door opened, and we all turned to see the armored guard came back in with the man that had conducted our testing and another man that looked just as slimy and creepy as the other one. Ajihad composed his features before turning to the new arrivals. "Ah, Jormundur, thank you for bringing the Twins. I have heard some rather disturbing news that I would like cleared up."
The Twins' eyes flicked to me and then back to the imposing man now standing at my back. "News, sir? What news is this?"
Ajihad laid a hand on my shoulder. "This girl has told me something that you left out of your report. And I will admit, I was rather disturbed when she first revealed the parentage of her unborn child. But what disturbed me more was that I heard it from her, and not from you."
This earned me a harder look from the Twins. They smiled placatingly. "My Lord, why would we hide something from you? If we thought it important who this trollop slept with on her way here, we would still be conducting our first meeting and our guests would still be sitting in the cavern entrance."
I felt my face flush. Gasps were heard from several of the people lining the walls, and Eragon took a threatening step toward the slimy men. It was Murtagh who spoke. "You little creep, I could kill you for that. Princess Artemis is a good woman, and she would never lie about something like that."
As soon as the words were out, Murtagh looked horrified. I buried my face in my hands, and Eragon shook his head, looking nervous. Ajihad just laughed. "Another thing you failed to report to me. How is it I am learning more pertinent information from a captive and a scared woman than I am from the men I am supposed to trust to keep spies and assassins out of our city?"
The Twins were starting to look scared. "My Lord, you can't possibly believe them over us!"
Jormundur spoke now, his voice thundering around the room and making the snivelling men cower. "I believe them more than I believe you."
Ajihad nodded. "And I trust his judgement. Take these men into custody. They are now prisoners."
There was a brief scuffle as the men fought but two of the soldiers had the twins gagged before they could say any spells and soon their hands were bound. They were led unceremoniously from the room, shooting me a dark look on the way out. When it was quiet again, Ajihad turned back to the task at hand.
"I appreciate you bringing their treachery to light, but the fact remains. Murtagh is the son of a Forsworn. I can't let him roam the city freely. For his own protection as much as my people's. Many of them hold grudges against the Forsworn, and if it were to get out that the child of one of their most hated enemies was walking around, there is no telling what could happen."
I stared at the dark man in dismay. "You can't be serious!"
He smiled at me sadly. "I know how hard this must be for you. You fought valiantly, young woman. Unfortunately it is my hands that are tied in this matter. And as for you, unfortunately, you are correct. I can't allow you to roam the streets freely either."
Jormundur stepped up quickly and seized my upper arms. Ajihad turned back to the desk he had abandoned when we entered the room. Murtagh and Eragon immediately ahouted objections, but Ajihad waved them away as he had done earlier.
"Once again, it is for her protection as much as ours. If people found out that she carries the child of the king, they might try to do her harm. I'll not risk it."
"Then don't tell them who fathered the child," Eragon insisted. "No one else but the few people here know the truth. We can tell everyone else something different!"
"And what, pray tell, do you suggest we tell them?" Ajihad sat down and steepled his fingers, looking at Eragon expectantly. "Who are we going to say is the father?"
Eragon didn't bat an eyelid before answering. "Me."
