Renesmee
I was still sniffling to Jacob in our bed, late into the night. I’d curled most of my body up in his lap. He listened and rubbed big, gentle circles on my back.
Even though I knew Mollie was safe over at Rachel’s, I didn’t like her not being here. Even when one of my kids planned to sleep over at her house, or anybody else’s, it felt a little odd. I didn’t like it it all, it felt the way it would have if she’d actually succeeded in getting to Montana. I knew that with Aunt Alice always looking out for us, Mollie would have never gotten away with it, but it scared me that she’d tried.
“What kind of mother am I? I should have just checked in with her more, maybe I’d have known that she had no clue what was going on. We should ask Xandra what she knows,” I said.
“Well...” he said slowly. “I know a lot of what she knows.”
He looked a little nervous.
I was careful to keep any accusatory tone out of my voice.
“Such as?”
“I had my doubts too, but it seemed like...her feelings were getting sort of serious,” he said.
I sat up, and slid off his lap.
“You didn’t think that was something you could have mentioned?” I said tensely.
He looked guilty, as he damn well should.
“I just...I,” he stuttered.
“For God’s sake, Jacob!”
I got up and hustled out to the kitchen, then I just stood there in the quiet dark for a minute. I was so angry I didn’t want to look at him. I knew he was upset, about everything he’d been hiding in our room since yesterday.
Of course he wouldn’t say anything to me. That might have set the wheels in motion, and lead to something he didn’t want to happen yet. I understood why, but that didn’t make it right.
I ended up sitting in front of the television watching one of those awful program length commercials. When they’d almost talked me into calling to order that stupid gadget that probably didn’t even work, I decided I’d better just turn the television off.
I sat in an arm chair, wondering if things would have been any different if Jake had spoken up. Maybe they wouldn’t have, maybe I was just as guilty of wanting to keep her to ourselves as he was.
I hadn’t meant to fall asleep out there. When I woke up, I wasn’t surprised to see Jake curled up on the floor, asleep at my feet.
“Oh, sweetie,” I sighed.
My voice woke him. He sat up, and looked at me with a groggy expression. He closed his eyes again, put his head in my lap, and wound his arms tightly around my waist.
We didn’t say anything at first. I listened to his ragged breathing, and scratched lightly at his scalp with my nails the way I knew would calm him down. He still trembled.
“It’s okay,” I whispered.
“No, it’s not,” he murmured into my legs. “I’m sorry I disappointed you. I try so hard to be a good dad. Is it so wrong that maybe I just love her too much? I love both of you so much.”
“I know,” I said. “I wish you wouldn’t talk like that, you’re a wonderful dad. She isn’t little anymore, though. We just have to accept it.”
He kept his hold on me as I slid to the floor to join him. Once I was down there, he readjusted and rested his head on my chest.
“Please don’t be angry with me,” he begged. “I’ll loose it if both of you are.”
“I’m not.”
Not anymore, anyway. He was beating himself up enough as it was. I can’t really stay angry at him, when I don’t even know what I would have done if I were him.
“I didn’t want to hurt her. Never, never, never,” he insisted.
“I know,” I whispered again.
His hands snaked under the back of my shirt, and spread out across my back. It wasn’t meant as sexual, I knew he just needed to feel my skin on his.
He needed comforted, to feel close to me.
“Come on,” I said, standing and leading him to our room.
“I do need you,” he admitted, having seen my thoughts.
I knew there weren’t many things worse to him, then having upset or disappointed me. If I told him I wasn’t angry, he might not believe me. I wanted to show him, and make sure he knew.
Once I’d undressed, I climbed on top of him and sat on his stomach.
“Everything is okay,” I told him softly.
With his eyes closed, he ran his hands all over my body. He didn’t really concentrate on any certain spot. I could tell it was working already. His breathing was nice and even now.
When I took him inside of me, I reminded him how much I loved him. I leaned down, pressing my chest against his, and burying my face in the crook of his neck. I squeezed his thighs with mine each time I rose up, and sighed each time I sank down again.
We worked slowly towards our release. It was quiet, for us, but still intense. We didn’t need loud shouts and primal screams right now, just to be with each other.
“You always know what I need,” he whispered when we were side by side and close to sleep.
I smiled and kissed him one more time.
Things were fine with Jake and I. In the morning, we’d have to face Mollie, and hope for forgiveness.
MollieWhen I woke up, it was already around lunch time. I hadn’t even noticed Noah sitting on the other end of the couch I’d been sleeping on, watching cartoons.
“Oh, hey,” I mumbled.
“Good morning, sunshine!” he said.
I had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with my cousins before I left. I did like hanging out with them, but I was just putting off leaving.
Aunt Rachel called me on it and told me, in a loving way, to go home.
It was really gross outside, there was a very cold rain that I was not looking forward to being in. I was looking forward to the arrival of my ride home though.
When Seth pulled up in his truck, I was bouncing up and down on the porch. I could hear him laughing at me before he put the truck into park.
“Stay there!” he shouted, opening the door and leaving it rumbling. He took a few long strides through the rain and bounded up onto the porch. When he reached me, he quickly pulled me into his arms and hugged me so tight it almost hurt.
“Hey, sweetie. I have something for you,” he said.
He pulled a black umbrella out of the waistband of his jeans.
“I figured you wouldn’t have one on you.”
I grinned at his thoughtfulness.
“Thank you.”
I yelled goodbye to everybody, and hurried to the truck, protected under the umbrella.
As soon as both our doors were closed and we were in the warm dry truck, Seth’s hands were cradling my face, pulling me to him. His lips were quickly on mine. The kiss managed to be hard, but slow at the same time. His big hands were gentle as they stroked my cheeks.
He pulled away far sooner then I wanted him to.
“We should go,” he said breathlessly. “Before Paul yells at me to quit pawing his niece in his driveway.”
I laughed.
“I wouldn’t call it 'pawing’,” I said as he backed out of the driveway. “That would have been okay with me though, for the record.”
“Later then,” he said. Even though he was looking straight ahead at the road, I saw the corner of his lip turn up.
Now there’s something to look forward to.
After the high of seeing him again wore off slightly, I remembered how mad I was at everybody.
He noticed.
“So they made a mistake, I hope you’ll forgive them. Your family loves you. I know how close you guys are. All imprint families are like that,” he said. He reached over for my hand, and we wove our fingers together as he drove through the loud, pounding rain.
When he pulled into our driveway, I took a deep breath.
“It’ll be fine,” he said. “Is it okay if I don’t come in though? I’ll just see everybody later. I don’t wanna...interfere or anything.”
“That’s fine,” I said.
We were quiet as he turned his truck around to leave, and then backed it up so I’d be close to the front door.
After some whispers and a quick kiss goodbye, I opened my borrowed umbrella and ran though the rain again.
I heard him pulling away as I closed the front door behind me. I’d already wished I’d asked him to stay.
It was quiet in here. Too quiet.
I found Mom standing just outside the doorway to the dining room.
“Hi, Mol. I’m glad you’re back.”
“Hi,” I mumbled, looking past her into the dining room.
Everybody was sitting around the completely empty dining room table.
“What is this?” I demanded.
“This is a family meeting. No more secrets,” Mom said. "Not ever."
“Fine, that works just great,” I said, plopping down into my usual chair. “It will save me some time. This way I can tell you all at once how pissed off I am at every single one of you!”
As I looked around, I saw guilty faces. Dad looked especially guilty, which sort of softened me, until I looked at Xandra, sitting right next to me.
She actually had the gall to look angry at me!
I exploded.
“Are you kidding me?! What could you possibly be upset about!”
She got right in my face.
“How about that you were about to run off without even telling me?” she roared.
“Oh, please. And what would you have done? You’d have phased and told everybody!”
Anthony, who was sitting next to Xandra, put his hand on her shoulder to pull her back. She smacked it away.
“You couldn’t even think of me for one second?” she continued.
“I did!” I insisted.
“Not for very long I guess! Try thinking about somebody besides yourself, or Seth for once!”
She stormed out, and left through the back door. Mom got up and followed her, but she was already gone.
“Damn it,” Mom said under her breath. When I came up behind her, she had sat on the back step and was staring at the pile of shredded clothes at the edge of the yard.
“Perfect!” Mom yelled at no one, throwing her hands up in the air.
I stood next to her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to pick a fight,” I said.
She shook her head. “No, I’m sorry. Come here.”
I sat down beside her.
“I’m so sorry, sweetie. I didn’t mean for it to become some big secret like that. I wish I’d known that you were hurting like that,” she said, her eyes full of sympathy. “Why didn’t you just tell me?”
I shrugged shyly. “Nobody really knew everything.”
I turned at the footsteps behind us to see Dad’s knees.
“Do you want me to go get her?” he asked Mom. She looked up to answer him, but before she could, we heard a loud howl coming from across the rez.
Dad listened closely.
“It’s Adam,” he announced. “She’s okay. He won’t loose track of her.”
Mom sighed. “Then I guess stay here. For now, anyway.”
Dad sat down on the other side of me, and put his arm around my shoulders.
I let him hold me, but scowled as he spoke.
“I’m sure you’re mad at me, and you should be. I just hope you know that I love you very much, and I’d never do anything to hurt you. Ever.”
“Why coudn’t somebody just freaking tell me?” I asked.
“Don’t blame A.J. or your sister, I told them not to, it’s my fault. Xandra wanted to tell you, I promised her that when the time came that you needed to know, we’d tell you. So we did," he said.
I supposed that was true.
“We weren’t sure until you told us loud and clear,” Mom added.
“It’s just...it’s a hard thing for a dad.” he said, holding me tighter. “I was being selfish and I’m really sorry. I know it was wrong of me, but...even though you’re not the baby of the family anymore, you were for a while. You’re still my littlest girl, you know? I just wanted to hang on to you a little longer.”
I couldn’t believe he still thought of me that way.
“It’s not like I’m going anywhere, Dad,” I reminded him.
“You’d better not. You’re lucky it’s Seth, and that I know he’ll treat you good. If it was anybody else, I’d lock you in your room until you turn twenty.”
“Dad!” I said, shoving him away from me, and trying not to laugh.
“What? I would,” he said.
“Okay, okay,” Mom said. “We only have one big thing to ask of you, Mollie.”
“Yes?” I said hesitantly.
“There’s going to be some changes, but make sure you finish high school,” she said, putting her hand on my knee. “You’ll go again someday, but this time is the important one. It’s the first time. It would mean a lot to your dad to see you finish school on the rez.”
“I can do that.” I said.
“You sure?” Dad asked.
“Yeah,” I said. “I’ll finish school on the rez.”
“Good,” Dad said, kissing me on the cheek. “I love you, baby.”
He can still call me baby if he wants, as long as he doesn’t treat me like one.
“I love you, too,” I said.
As mad as I was, he’s still my dad.
“I’m gonna see what’s going on,” he said, and jogged around the side of the house to phase.
Mom and I watched him run off into the trees.
“Sometimes, I wish I’d encouraged your dad to finish high school here, where he grew up, instead of in Alaska,” she admitted. “But I wanted him with me.”
“Well, it turned out okay,” I said, trying to find a positive. “You got to go together.”
“Yeah, and that was nice,” she said with a smile. “I just don’t want you to have any regrets if they can be avoided.”
I nodded, and thought about my conversation with Aunt Rachel.
“I guess I kind of understand waiting. He’ll take care of me, but I sort of have to take care of him, too,” I said.
“Exactly,” she said.
When Seth texted me, Mom went back into the house. He wanted to know how it went.
okay w mom and dad. not so good w X, I responded.
im sorry. what happened?
she ran off, id avoid phasing right now if i were you, I advised him.
I promised I’d call him before I went to sleep, and sat outside to wait for my sister.
Dad came back before she did.
“Where’s Xandra?” I asked him once he was human again.
“She’s coming, she’s calmed down a lot,” he told me.
“Good,” I said.
When she returned I watched her, trying to interpret her expression, but it was harder when she was in this form. Her eyes were on me too, as she went around the side of the house where her bin of extra clothes was kept. When she was back in my sight, she was human again and straightening out one of Swan’s old spaghetti strap dresses. She stood in front of me, arms crossed. It was then I noticed how red her eyes were.
“I wanted to tell you everything,” she said with a touch of bitterness in her voice. I opened my mouth to speak, but she cut me off. “You’d have never made it to Montana, but I can’t believe you’d just go without telling me!”
“I know, I’m sorry. I didn’t want to leave without seeing you, I really didn’t,” I explained.
“But you still did,” she reminded me.
“It hurt so bad, you don’t understand-”
“Don’t tell me that I don’t understand!” she yelled. “There’s stuff about the pack that you don’t understand. I can’t just run around doing whatever I want like you!”
“I said I was sorry! Leaving you made it feel even worse. But fine, you’re right. I’m a selfish, horrible person who should just die!”
I gave up, and sat there staring angrily into space, waiting for her to either talk again, or just leave.
“No, you aren’t. I know it hurt. It hurt Seth, too. I saw it. I wanted to tell you so bad. I hated it, but there was nothing I could do. I’m glad you know,” she said firmly. “Just don’t forget about me.”
“Why would you even think that?” I asked, tears stinging at my eyes. “You’re my best friend, and that won’t ever change. Not for any reason, do you hear me, bitch?”
She laughed and wiped her eyes. “I love you,” she said.
“I love you. Are we supposed to hug now?” I wondered.
“Probably.” So I stood, and we wrapped our arms around each other. It was still odd that she was now a few inches taller than me, but she still smelled the same as she always had.
“Are you coming hunting with us later?” she asked when we parted.
“Uh huh.”
We ended up in her room to waste some time until then.
I sat on my laptop and looked up what was proving to be a very elusive video game cheat we’d been after.
“Yes!” I shouted when I’d finally found it.
She wiggled herself between me and the wall I was leaning against to look over my shoulder.
“Oh, my God!” she gasped.
“I know,” I agreed. “I can’t believe we didn’t figure that out.”
“No, your neck!” she said. She brushed my hair away to get a better look at the spot where Seth’s lips had spent some time last night.
“Get out of here!” I said, trying to cover it up with hair from both sides of my head.
“You dirty whore!” she whispered through her laughter.
“Shut up!” I hissed. I slammed my computer closed and threw myself on top of it. I wrapped my arms around it to keep her from grabbing it from me.
“There’s no way I’m letting you in on this!” I said. My hair covered my face, so she couldn’t see it, but I was smiling.
She dove on top of me and tried to wrestle it away.
“No!” I screamed, kicking at her with my feet and trying to protect my computer by clutching it to my chest.
My feet made contact with her stomach and she went flying across the room, but landed on her feet just before she hit the wall.
She let out a loud cackle as she came at me again. “Let me have it!” she hollered.
“No!” I shrieked, shielding my computer with my body.
“Knock it off!” Mom called from downstairs.
Xandra sat down on the floor next to me, panting. “Already saw it anyway,” she said, sticking out her tongue.
“Oh, you suck,” I said.
“Ha! Nice choice of words.”
We had a very successful hunting trip. I rode on Anthony’s back, which is always fun. He’s by far one of the fastest in the pack. The two of us shared a nice big elk.
When we came back, Xandra and I played with our brothers, and the wolves that were probably more Anthony’s pets then anybody else’s. They lived somewhere out in our woods, so we didn’t see them all the time. They seemed so domesticated, I was surprised they did so well in the wild. Of course, the steaks they sometimes got from us didn’t hurt. The three of them would certainly never starve.
That night, once I was nice and comfortable in my bed, I called Seth as I’d promised.
“It’s so good to hear your voice,” he said.
“Ditto,” I agreed.
“Have things calmed down?” he asked.
“Yeah. I think everything is fine now,” I told him.
“Oh, good. I was worried.”
I told him about our hunting trip, and that Xandra noticed he’d left his mark on me.
“Uh oh,” he said.
“It’s okay, she thought it was funny.” I closed my eyes and touched that spot, thinking about the way I felt when his lips were on me there.
“I miss you,” he whispered.
“I miss you, too.”
“Want a ride to school tomorrow?” he asked hopefully.
Oh, yeah. School.
“For sure.”
I decided I’d tell him later about the chat I’d had with my parents about finishing school. I knew he’d be okay with it.
“I love you,” I said before we hung up.
“I love you, too.”
It felt like it was only about thirty seconds after I’d fallen asleep, that somebody was shaking me awake.
For a second, I panicked. I thought I’d slept through my alarm.
I couldn’t force my eyes open. My lids felt like they weighed elleventy billion pounds
I could tell it was Swan by her scent.
“What the fuck?” I whined. “What time is it?”
I so hated her face right then, and wanted it out of my room.
“I’m sorry, you can go right back to sleep. I don’t think I can until I tell you this!”
“This better be good.” I looked over at her, kneeling next to me bed.
“It’s awesome, I promise,” she assured me.
I threw my arm over my eyes.
“Let’s hear it,” I mumbled.
“No, look at me. I wanna make sure you’re awake.”
I opened my eyes as wide as I could, probably making myself look like a big eyed bug.
“Is this awake enough for you?” I asked.
“Stop being stupid, listen. I have no idea when this will actually take place, I think this dream has got to be a record for me, I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed this far ahead before.”
“Did you just wake me up just to talk about yourself?”
If she did, she was in trouble, and had better start running.
“No! Shut up. I saw your wedding day!”
Now my eyes probably really looked like they would bug out of my head.
“Are you serious?” I asked.
“Yes!”
For probably the first time in my life, I was positively speechless.
Somehow, this made it really official. It used to be in my head, but now it’s out there in the universe and it’s real. It’s true. We are really going to be married someday.
It was so overwhelming, I couldn’t help but cry.
“Aw, Mollie,” Swan said sweetly.
I wiped my eyes with my bed sheet.
“Don’t you wanna know what I saw?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I sniffled.
“I didn’t see your actual wedding, but it was the day of it, I’m positive. It was before the ceremony. I couldn’t tell where we were, but you were sitting at a vanity and I was doing your hair. I saw Mom in there with us, and Dad, and Xandra. They were all dressed up. So was I. You were still in a robe or something though. Damn, I wish I’d seen the wedding!”
“No, it’s okay. That is so cool. It’s amazing. Best dream ever,” I said.
“I thought you would think so.”
“And you can definitely do my hair,” I told her.
She gave me a quick hug before letting me go back to bed, as promised.
I fell asleep happy, happier than I’ve ever been...so far anyway.
A/N: What a love/hate relationship those two have! And the twinnies, I’m pretty sure that no matter how old they get, they will always act like kids around each other lol.
Sorry if any body was missing the boys this chapter. Asa is not yet at the age where he cares about male/female relationships very much, so he wouldn’t have a ton to say about all of this. A.J., he’d have the same guilt as pretty much else, plus it’s probably a little awkward for him, so he’d rather just move on.
I feel like there was more I wanted to tell you guys, but it’s slipped my mind. The facebook page is good for things I forgot to put in my notes to you, so I’ll see ya there!
Til next time, be safe ;)
