The next morning, the Indians all gathered outside to say goodbye to the Prince of Neverland. Wendy watched him go around and hug each of the women and shake the hands of the men and thought that he really did resemble royalty. She supposed he had been with them so long, causing trouble but still rescuing them from harm, he really was their prince. She sighed deeply, again remembering that she was tearing him away from everything he knew and loved. But no, she reminded herself, as Peter had so often reminded her, he chose this. He chose to be with her and it was his choice to leave and grow up. Tiger Lily approached Wendy and kissed her cheek. “Wendy-bird is always welcome here. Enjoy every moment, dear one, there is magic and miracles all around you.” Wendy squeezed Tiger Lily’s hands and thanked her for the millionth time. Peter slipped his hand into Wendy’s and they waved one last goodbye before departing the village. The Lost Boys had returned to the hide out and the Darling boys were waiting for Wendy there. Peter paused for a moment and Wendy watched his face, terrified he was changing his mind. “What is it?” “Do you mind…could I say goodbye?” He asked in a whisper. He looked around him quickly and she understood. “Go. I’ll be waiting for you at the hideout.” Peter kissed her deeply and his hand caressed her cheek. “I will be back for you. I promise.” She smiled and nodded and he draped his arm around her shoulder, leading her back to the hideout. About thirty yards away, Peter stopped, pulling her closer to his side. She hadn’t heard anything but she forgot how keen his senses were. He crept over the bushes, slow and cat-like, and peered through. Wendy joined him and gasped. “Mr. Smee?” The pirate was carving on a stone and he looked up quickly when he heard his name “Miss Wendy! Peter! What are you both doing here? I thought you were with the Indians.” “We have been but we’re leaving Neverland today. What are you doing?” Very slowly, Smee turned the stone around so they could see what he had carved. James Hook, Captain of the Jolly Roger. Smee even blushed a little, not looking at either of them. “He was a scoundrel and a scallywag and he did terrible things. But he was a good captain and also me friend. I am terribly sorry for what he did to both of you. But I had to mark his place in Neverland somehow.” When they didn’t respond, he leaned down and thrust the stone into the dirt and pushed it all around so that the grave looked old and weathered. Peter stared at the man for the longest time, unsure of how to feel. He slowly opened his knapsack the Indians had given to him and pulled out the steel hook they had insisted he take with him. Yet another sign of how grown up Peter had become, he knew this lasting part of Hook would bring comfort to Smee. Wendy noticed and cleared her throat, acting as Peter’s voice. “Peter would like you to have this, Mr. Smee. You deserve to have something that belonged to your friend.” Smee looked startled for a moment then his face relaxed into a gracious smile as he took the hook from Peter. “Thank you, lad. Thank you.” Peter nodded and took Wendy’s hand into his own. Smee now saw Peter’s wound and he winced. Realizing it had been made by the very thing he held in his hands, he put the hook into his own bag, shoving it out of sight. “Mr. Smee, I have a question. How DID the Indians know we were aboard the ship? All that time we were there…how did they find out?” Smee shuffled his feet and stared at the dirt, not answering. Peter’s eyes widened and he squeezed Wendy’s hand. “You,” he croaked. Wendy looked from Peter to Smee quickly and Smee let out a deep sigh. “Aye, I’m the traitor. I didn’t mean for so many to die but…I couldn’t let that wee babe be born into that mess. So I sent a message to Princess Tiger Lily and hoped she would understand. When she came to your rescue, I fled, knowing I was the one who had betrayed my Captain and my crew. I am sorry, lad, that I waited so long.” Peter’s eyes met Smee’s and they softened. “Thank you, Mr. Smee,” Wendy said softly. “We owe you our lives.” “Just take that little one away from here and don’t think of returning. Neverland is no place to raise a child.” “No, I guess it wouldn’t be,” Wendy said, glancing at Peter. “Can you leave as well?” “I don’t know that I could, if I wanted to because Neverland is still my home. It always will be. It has its dangers but it’s the most beautiful and mystical place you’ll ever see. But,” he paused and smiled at the two of them, “I lived in England for some years myself and have to say it is equally as beautiful. You’ll be very happy there, Peter.” Wendy thanked him a thousand times with the look in her eyes and Smee nodded. “We must be going. Thank you for everything, Mr. Smee.” Smee, in a very un-pirate manner, kissed Wendy’s hand and shook Peter’s. Peter pulled her in the direction of the hideout, Wendy casting one last look at the pirate behind her.
