I'd never heard a louder silence in my life. All eyes were on Eragon. He stood tall and straight, staring directly at Ajihad.
"Eragon?" My voice shook. He glanced at me and smiled before turning back to the man seated before him.
Ajihad surveyed the young Rider for a long moment. Then he straightened. "Alright, suppose we do tell the people of the Varden that you are the father of her baby. What about the people in this room? Ale here is strong and gossip spreads fast. If someone were to let slip the truth, it can't be contained."
"Everyone will swear not to reveal the truth of what they heard in this room."
"You aren't married. Do you really want people to think the first free Rider in almost a century is letting his child be born a bastard?"
I winced at the cruelty of the word, but Eragon still didn't hesitate. "Then marry us."
There was another ringing silence. I could only gape at the young man I had travelled here with. "What are you saying?"
Eragon turned to look at me. "I'm willing to do everything I can to protect you. Everything."
Ajihad stood. "This is all well and good, but impractical. You are sixteen summers old. You have your entire lives to fall in love with someone, I would hate to see you mess that up for this." Murtagh snorted, and Ajihad looked over Eragon's head to eye the older boy. " You have something to say?"
"Artemis is half-elf. She's over eighty years old. And Eragon is seventeen now. He's a man. Not only that but he's a Rider. They live almost as long as elves do."
Ajihad turned to me in surprise. He composed himself quickly. "Be that as it may, they are still young in the eyes of their respective races."
Eragon started forward. "I don't care! You asked fore a solution and I gave one! I'm beginning to think you don't really want to help us." Ajihad looked taken aback by this.
"Alright, you proposed a solution to the issue of Artemis walking freely. What about Murtagh?"
"He's my guard," I said quickly. Everyone turned to look at me. "He knew everything before everyone else did and he made sure I made it here safely. Besides, you heard him call me 'princess.' I am the daughter of the elf king Evandar. There's nothing strange about a princess having a bodyguard, right?"
They seemed to contemplate this for a moment, then Ajihad nodded. "I will agree to this. As long as none of you cause problems for any of my people, you will remain free."
Jormundur released my arms, and the soldiers holding Murtagh stepped away. Eragon turned to go but stopped when Ajihad spoke again.
"I wasn't finished." The dark man came around his desk to stand directly in front of the Rider. "I will make sure none of the people in this room reveal anything of what has transpired, but there needs to be a grain of truth to the stories we are to spread through the Varden. If we are to tell everyone that you fathered the babe Princess Artemis is carrying, we need to make it believable. You offered to marry the girl, and I am going to see that you follow through with your promise. Here and now."
Jormundur gave me a gentle shove to move me next to Eragon. Murtagh sputtered in outrage behind us. I was still too shocked by the proceedings to be able to react. Jormundur eyed Murtagh menacingly. "You have an objection?"
Murtagh looked as if he was going to say something. He looked at me longingly, then shut his mouth and shook his head. Jormundur nodded. "That's what I thought."
Ajihad walked to a young woman standing against the wall. Her skin was as dark as his, and she was as beautiful as he was frightening. He reached behind her head and pulled a ribbon from her hair, then returned to his position in front of me and Eragon. "This will not be a traditional ceremony, but it will be no less binding." He stood straighter and cleared his throat.
"We are here to witness the joining of these two lives. Eragon, Dragon Rider, do you swear before everyone gathered here to protect this woman, her child, and -should it come to pass- any future children you may have together? Will you promise to love and honor her for all the days that you live?"
"Yes." Eragon spoke with such certainty and with no hesitation.
"Good." Ajihad turned to me. "Artemis, Daughter of the Elves, do you swear before everyone gathered here to follow this man, to support him in all is endeavors? Will you promise to love and honor him for all the days that you live?"
"Y-yes."
"Wonderful." Ajihad took my left hand and placed it in Eragon's. He wrapped the ribbon around our hands twice, then took the loose ends and tied them into a bow. "Then by the power given to me as leader of the Varden and declared before these gathered witnesses, I pronounce you man and wife. Congratulations."
Eragon smiled down at me. I was still too shocked to react. He put a hand under my chin and tilted my head back more so I was looking him full in the face. Then he dipped his head down and brushed his lips gently against mine. He was still smiling when he pulled back.
"Well, there you have it," he murmured to me. "I have to protect you now. I can't let Galbatorix take my wife from me."
I heard a rushing noise and felt myself falling. Eragon caught me in his arms and I passed out cold.
