A/N: Hello again! There is a little joke in here I want to make sure everybody gets about social security numbers, sounds hilarious already, right? Maybe I’m a touch ignorant, and lots of other countries have a system like this, but I’d rather have you guys skip this then leave some confused. So, in America the government assigns you a nine digit number as soon as you are born. You will write this number on pretty much every important form you fill out in your whole life. Anything having to do with the government, banking, employment, ect. That number is supposed to be a closely guarded secret, because if somebody knows it they can find out plenty about you. There’s lots more to know about that, but it’s boring as hell. You know all you need, and now the explanation is longer then the joke! So instead of telling you the story of what a huge pain in the ass it was for my sister when she misplaced her social security card, let’s get to it.
Jacob“Why?” I moaned to my grilled cheese sandwich.
Ness and I were the only ones at the table by now. Since she’d cooked lunch, she’d been the last to sit down, so I’d waited for her.
“Oh, Jacob. There’s no need to be over dramatic,” she said.
I watched her delicate fingers tear off the crust of her sandwich, and dip it in the creamy tomato soup.
“This is not a tragedy,” she reminded me gently.
I shrugged.
I dunno. I think two of our girls starting to date this close together is pretty damn awful.
Swan’s very first date was tonight and Seth, he was around here somewhere. After lunch everybody had wandered off to do their own thing.
Mollie, I knew I didn’t need to worry about. I knew she’d be treated like the princess she was. Ness kept reminding me that it was a good thing, and she was right.
It would have been reasonable for Seth to be pissed off at me for my role in delaying things a little, but he wasn’t. I got lucky. He knew why. I guess we were at an understanding.
His new favorite thing to think of when we were both phased, was a brick wall.
That’s just fine by me.
I knew everything about Seth. This Nate character, I knew little about, and I didn’t like it.
“Mom! Can you come help with my hair?” Swan called from upstairs.
Ness quickly swallowed the bite she’d been chewing, and answered with a question of her own.
“What are you doing with it?”
“Straightening it.”
“Get it into sections and I’ll be up,” Ness told her.
“Kay.”
I frowned as Ness started eating quickly.
“What now?” she said, covering her mouth with her hand as she talked as to not show me her half chewed sandwich.
“I just like watching you eat,” I said with a shrug.
She smiled and rolled her eyes.
Finished with my own meal, I scooted my chair closer to hers and wrapped my arms around her waist as she hurriedly ate her last few bites.
“What do you want?” she teased as I pressed my face into her upper arm.
“A kiss?” I asked, looking up at her hopefully.
She gently lifted my chin and gave me what I wanted. I felt like I’d hit the jackpot when she let me deepen the kiss, but not for long. She pulled away, gave me one more peck, and stood up from the table.
I watched as she brushed a few crumbs off her spectacular chest, then came back to my senses.
“I’ll get our plates,” I offered, standing up too.
“Thanks, sweetie.” She gave my shoulder a squeeze, and headed upstairs.
I sighed as I rinsed off our dishes in the sink.
I know it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it still sucks.
Renesmee
Upstairs in the bathroom she shared with her sisters, Swan had her hair divided into four sections with colorful clips, and was drumming her hands on the sink as she waited for me.
“Excited much?” I asked her.
She nodded, making her hair bounce around.
“Where’s your flat iron?” I asked.
“Oh, yeah. It may be helpful if I had let it heat up!”
She removed it from under the counter, and plugged it in.
While it heated up, she went over the master plan for her make up with me. She carefully lined up everything she planned to use, in the order she planned to use it.
“If you could flat iron the two back sections for me, I can do the front myself,” she said, once the iron was ready.
“I think I might just get one of those straightening treatments,” she said as I slowly ran the iron down a lock of her hair, watching it go from curly to straight. “It would grow out, so it wouldn’t be forever. It would be nice to not have to do this for a while.”
This was one of those things that she couldn’t do at vampire speed, it wouldn’t work. I knew things like that always annoyed her.
“That might be a good idea, it’d save you a lot of time,” I said.
“Exactly.”
“Not that I want you to be, but you don’t even seem nervous!” I observed.
“I’m really not,” she said with a smile. “I think it’s going to be a nice night,” she said confidently.
“I’m sure it will be. I wasn’t nervous for my first date, but that’s because I knew just where we were headed,” I said.
“Do you remember what you wore?” she asked, ever my little fashionista.
“Of course,” I said.
I put my hand on her shoulder, and used my gift to show her the white dress I’d worn on my first official date with Jake.
“Ooo, that’s pretty,” she said.
“I thought so, too.”
“He’s freaking out, isn’t he?” she whispered.
I put my hand on her shoulder again and told her, He’s just being a baby. He’ll be fine.
She gave a little giggle.
“I know.”
After I’d done the parts of her hair she couldn’t comfortably reach, I left her to finish getting ready.
I realized then, something sort of odd had happened. I’d lost track of Jacob. Our house is a decent size, but that never happens.
I looked in our room, no Jake. I looked in the basement and in the garage, no Jake.
I went into the rec room, and found lots going on, but no Jake.
Asa and Xandra were playing video games, and Mollie and Seth were using the pool table. Those two were doing wonderful. Seeing how happy she was really helped to erode any left over guilt I still had.
Things were slightly awkward at first. It had only been a few weeks, I supposed that was to be expected. At first they were spending more time at Sam and Emily’s then they used to. I really didn’t want to interfere, but I had to make sure Seth knew that he was still as welcome in our home as he always had been. Telling him seemed to help, and the time they spent together went back to being pretty evenly divided between the two houses.
Every time Seth saw Jake however, his hands went right to his sides. He obviously was uncomfortable showing Mollie affection in front of Jake. Again, I figured that was to be expected. I trusted that Mollie and Seth would work it out.
“Have you guys seen Dad?” I asked them.
“No, Mom,” Seth said with a smirk as he was about to take a shot.
“Oh, hush,” I teased.
“For real, Mom. We dunno where he is,” Asa said, not taking his eyes of the screen.
I stood still and listened, hearing nothing to give away his location.
“Jake?” I called out.
He answered right away.
“Hang on, hon.”
He was on this floor. I started to wonder if he was hiding and planning something for
Valentine’s Day. I didn’t want to spoil my own surprise, but I couldn’t help myself looking for him.
I listened some more as I moved around the first floor.
Click, click, click.
He’s on his laptop, somewhere around here.
I crept toward the sound, and flung open the laundry room door to find him hunched over his computer which was sitting on top of the dryer.
“Ha!” I cried triumphantly.
He jumped and quickly closed his computer.
“Jeeze, Ness! You are so nosey, it’s a good thing you’re so pretty.”
“What are you doing?” I said with a grin.
“Nothing you’d be interested in,” he assured me.
“I doubt that,” I said, coming towards him. “Are you maybe...getting ready for a certain holiday that’s coming up very soon?”
“No,” he said with a smile. “Your gift is taken care of, and don’t you go looking for it either!”
“I won’t. What are you up to then?” I asked.
“I don’t want to tell you,” he said quietly, avoiding my eyes. That, I did not like.
I grabbed the computer from him and opened it, he didn’t try to stop me.
I stared at the screen, and raised my eyebrows.
“You googled Nate?” I said.
“I’m sorry. Please don’t be angry,” he said quickly.
I shook my head, and reached out to take his hands.
“I’m not angry, but sweetie, Grandpa Charlie said he’s never gotten into any trouble. I thought that made you feel better,” I said.
“I know, but then I got to thinking. Just because he’s never gotten caught doing anything bad...” his voice trailed off. “I was trying to find his Facebook to make sure there’s no pictures of him posing with bongs or anything.”
“Oh, Jake. Swan would never use drugs. They might not even work if she tried.”
“I know that,” he mumbled. “I couldn’t even find anything on him. His name is too common.”
“Yeah,” I said, looking at the screen. “I see here that he owns a successful photography studio in England, and that he also died in Vermont in 1961.”
“Yup,” he said, discouraged by the search results.
“Just try to relax. We’ll stay in and have a nice bath together tonight, doesn’t that sound relaxing?”
“Mmm hmm,” he said, pulling me into an embrace.
Sometimes I feel like I have six kids instead of five. Well, seven if you count Seth, and it seems like I might as well.
Swan“He’s coming! He’s coming!” I called, running through the house. I could hear Nate’s car at the end of our long driveway.
I’d been ready for an hour. I had on a simple white sweater, with a cute black belt around my waist, and some skinny jeans. Tara said this wasn’t a dressy type of theater, but I dressed my outfit up a little with a nice pair of heels in a soft shade of pink.
I’d thought about leaving the top button on my sweater open, but Mom got this look on her face anytime I was showing a little boob. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t really need to. I could tell.
I kept it buttoned.
“He’s late,” Dad commented, looking at the clock on the wall.
“No he isn’t!” I argued. “It’s 5:59, he’ll get here exactly at 6:00, Dad!”
“You know what they say. If you aren’t five minutes early, you’re late,” he said with a shrug.
“Who the heck says that?” Mom asked, looking like her patience may be wearing a little thin.
“I dunno, people?” he said.
“Dad! You can’t act all weird!” I said. “Nate thinks we aren’t even related, that I’m some random relative of Mom’s,” I reminded him.
“I know, I know,” he said.
Mom and I had a talk about how there will be times we have to pretend our relationships are something other then what they are. It was going to be the hardest part about dating a human. I was willing to try though. I knew all relationships with humans would end eventually, in one way or another. That’s no reason not to start one in the first place though, no reason I can’t enjoy the company of a very attractive human for the time being.
Oh, and he was very attractive. I watched as he unfolded his long legs and got out of his car. He had on a pair of khaki’s, and a nice polo shirt.
He looked perfect.
I opened the door without giving him a chance to knock on it.
“Hey, you!” he exclaimed. “Wow, you look great.”
“Thanks, so do you,” I said with a grin. Then I sighed. “Come on in though, we have to do the thing first.”
“Right,” he said with a smile.
I took his hand to lead him inside, and let it slide from mine when we reached the dining room, where my family was seated.
They looked surprisingly normal, to somebody who doesn’t know us.
I went around the table to introduce them all.
“Guys, this is Nate. Nate, you know Mollie and Xandra and A.J. from school. This is Asa, he’s been home schooled, but he’s gonna start with us next year. And this is Jake, and Nessie.”
“Hi, everybody,” Nate said.
He was just as not nervous as I was. I admired his confidence.
“It’s so nice to meet you,” Mom said warmly.
“You too, Mrs. Black, and Mr. Black,” he said.
“Oh, my gosh,” Mom said with a laugh. “Nessie is fine, really.”
“So, where are you guys headed?” Dad asked, staring Nate down.
I gave Dad a dirty look, he knew exactly where we were going. I wanted to tell him we were going to a kinky sex club, where Nate was going to chain me to a wall and have his way with me.
“To The Grande Villa for dinner, then the Aquarius Theater,” Nate said. “One of our classmates is in Hairspray there.”
Dad nodded. “No where else?” he asked.
“Nope, that’s the whole agenda,” Nate said smoothly.
“Let’s go ahead and go,” I said. “Later,” I told my family. “Goodbye Mr. Black,” I said, making sure Dad knew it hadn’t escaped my notice that he didn’t want Nate to call him by his first name.
Dad responded by shouting a reminder of my curfew after us.
A bit rude, but that would have gone way worse. At least he didn’t ask Nate for his social security number and date of birth.
“That wasn’t too painful,” Nate said once we were in the car.
“Yeah, that wasn’t too bad,” I agreed.
On the drive to dinner, Nate played the radio too loud to talk much, but he had good taste in music, so I didn’t really mind.
“Can we get something out of the way before dinner?” he asked once we’d parked at the restaurant.
“Um, okay?”
He leaned in, and before I knew it, he was kissing me. After I got over the surprise, I started kissing him back.
“There we go,” he whispered, looking as satisfied by the kiss as I felt.
When we actually made it into the restaurant, I followed him through the door and took a good look around. It was kind of cheesy looking, but he said the food was great.
“I know there is a weird looking bread stick thing hanging on the wall, but give it a chance,” he said when we’d been seated.
He helpfully pointed out a few things on the menu, which was laminated, but falling apart and sort of gross looking.
“Their Chicken Parmesan is awesome. So is the Ceaser Salad,” he said.
Great. So white meat, and no meat. This is why I don’t like going out to eat.
I kept perusing the menu.
“I’m more of a red meat kind of gal,” I admitted as my eyes scanned my choices.
“Oh! That’s refreshing. Most girls are like, I’ll just have a little salad!” he said.
“I’m definitely not most girls,” I said with a wry smile.
“That’s why I like you,” he said, reaching across the table to place his hand over mine. “Order whatever you want, baby. They have steak here.”
It made me feel a little tingly that he just called me baby, and about the steak also. That was good news. I did end up ordering a rare steak, he went with the lasagna.
“You seem to know that menu pretty well, come here often?” I teased after the waiter had taken our orders and left us.
I hadn’t really expected his reaction to that. His heart rate increased considerably.
“Um, once in a while,” he said, avoiding my eyes.
Hmm.
“Like maybe, with other girls?” I said, raising an eyebrow.
“Okay,” he said putting his hands up. “I guess you kinda busted me. I’ve brought dates here before, but that doesn’t mean that you and I can’t have a nice time here, right?”
He did have a point.
It was forgotten about, and we did have a nice dinner. The steak was pretty good, not as good as my mom’s cooking, but I don’t think anything is.
Nate talked about how much he missed playing soccer with the team, and how he couldn’t wait until the season started again. To keep in shape he’d created himself a little soccer camp in his parent’s basement, and told me all about it. He did stuff like drills with a soccer ball around some orange cones he had set up.
“Whatever you’re doing, it’s working,” I said, giving him my best flirty smile.
I heard my text alert go off, and considered ignoring it. I was with the person I’d be happiest to hear from, but what if it was something important?
It was from Xandra, and it was not important. She would interrupt me tonight, I should have known.
Dad just said if u come home w/ a hicky like Mol did he’ll swallow Nate whole. ha!
This was the first I’d heard of that, but I knew Dad would notice that “little” love bite. Mollie wasn’t fooling anyone, it was as big as Seth’s huge freaking mouth.
Thanks for the hot tip, now leave me the Hell alone, was my response.
I turned my phone off for the rest of the night.
Nate and I held hands on the short drive to the theater, and when we got there, I saw Tara hadn’t been kidding when she said the place was small. I stopped short when Nate and I went through the lobby doors, and suddenly I was nearly on the stage.
“Damn, Tara!” I said, even though she was backstage somewhere. Where is backstage even at? I’d never seen a theater like this. The stage in the exact middle of the room was square, and it was surrounded by seats on all four sides. Instead of the stage being higher up like in theaters I was used to, the seats were. So each of the four sections were lined with stairs. We crossed the stage, we had to in order to get to our seats, and started climbing the stairs.
“Let’s sit close,” I said. We ended up in the second row. I spent the time we had before the show started looking around, there was lots to look at without a curtain to hide anything. I could see all of the lights hanging from the ceiling, and there were a lot of doors. There was one in each corner in the carpeted area between the sections of seats, plus one at the top of each staircase.
“This place is crazy!” I said. “It’s like, you can see all it’s guts!”
“Yeah, I didn’t even know there was another kind of theater besides, you know, the regular kind,” Nate agreed.
I had been wondering which door the actors would come out of. When the lights when down, they came out of all of them!
There was so much going on I hardly knew where to look.
I was fascinated by the fact that I could have reached out and touched the actors while they were doing their thing. I could feel their footsteps as they walked and danced by me. I’d never been this close to a stage before.
It was fun to see Tara playing Penny, the main character’s BFF. It was a good part, and she was good in it. I wish I’d thought to bring her flowers or something. Asa could have whipped up something lovely for her if I’d asked.
The show was set in the 1960‘s, and was so colorful and upbeat. It had lots of really fun, energetic songs. When the talented group took their bows at the end, I stood up and cheered, along with the rest of the audience.
“I’m gonna do this,” I announced to Nate once the applause died down.
“Really? You wanna be in a play?” he said.
“Yeah. This place is so cool.”
“I bet you’d be good at it,” he said encouragingly.
I liked to sing, loved to dance, and I was positive I could act.
I dragged Nate through the slowly departing audience, over to the stage door where Tara said we’d be able to find her after the show. We stood near the door, where I recognized a few cast members departing. It was strange to see them back in the real world, in full 60‘s hair and makeup, wearing lounge pants and carrying book bags.
“Swan! I knew you were here, I could hear you laughing!”
There was Tara, coming out of the door sporting the same look as the rest of the cast. Her hair was still done in two braids, full makeup, but she’d changed into jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt.
“Hi!” I didn’t mean to squeal, but I sort of did. “You were great, everyone was great!”
“Oh, thank you! I’m so glad you came, you had fun then?” she asked.
“Yes!” I answered for both of us.
Tara looked past me and called out to some one.
“Josie! Hey, Josie!” she shouted. “Do you guys wanna meet our director?” Without waiting for an answer, she hurried us over to meet Josie, a short, heavy set woman with greying hair that was pulled back into a loose ponytail.
“Josie, these are two of my classmates, Nate and Swan,” Tara said.
“Hi there, thanks so much for coming,” Josie said with a friendly smile.
“Oh, absolutely . It was amazing! I’ve never been to a theater like this,” I said.
“Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves. Yes, this one is interesting, isn’t it? I just love theater in the round,” Josie said.
“That’s what it’s called? It’s square though,” Nate said.
Josie laughed. “Yup, that’s what they call it. So, do you think you two would like to try out for my spring show? We’re doing Jesus Christ Superstar.”
“Sure!” I said automatically.
“Oh, not me. I’ll be super busy come spring. You can count on me to be in the audience though,” Nate said.
“Good enough!” Josie said with another kind smile to both of us.
A frantic looking young man with a clipboard ran up behind us, shouting for Josie. He handed her the clipboard and she looked at it, displeased.
“Oh, what fresh Hell is this! How can we possibly be missing this many props right now, we just had them!” Josie said.
The man gave a helpless shrug.
“Excuse me folks. See you soon,” Josie said to me with a wink.
“You’re doing a show, you’re doing a show!” Tara cried. “This is great! You’ll love everybody.”
“Do you already know who’s going to be in it?” I asked.
“Not exactly, but those of us who like it here, and like working with Josie, will all come back. There will be new people I’m sure, but I know a lot of this cast wants to audition for that one also,” Tara explained. “Will you be able to make all the rehearsals? We have two or three a week, more when it gets closer to show time.”
“I can do that,” I said.
“Yay! We’ll talk about it later, I don’t think the audition dates have even been set yet. I’ve gotta get home and get some rest, we’ve got a matinee tomorrow.”
“Good luck,” I said.
Tara gasped. “No, no. You have to say break a leg!”
“Oh! Oops. Break a leg then. What’s up with that?” I wondered.
“If you say good luck, you’ll jinx it. So you wish for something bad, so that the opposite will happen. I dunno it’s weird,” she said with a shrug. “There are tons of weird superstitions. Like you can’t say...you can’t say the name of a certain Shakespeare play in a theater. It’s super bad luck. I’ll have to tell you at school,” she whispered.
I laughed. “Okay then, see you Monday.”
On the way home, I was so excited I couldn’t shut up.
“I don’t know if a show about Jesus would have quite as much dancing, but I’ve always loved to dance,” I said.
“I’d watch you dance, not that kind of dancing though,” he said, reaching over to place his hand on my bare knee.
“What kind then?” I asked.
I was careful to keep my legs perfectly still. If I closed them I’d discourage him, which I didn’t want to do. However I also wasn’t about to open them and give him any ideas that I was ready for anything major tonight.
“Something with far less clothes is what I had in mind,” he said looking away from the road and over at me.
I shrieked with laughter and pushed him away, but he kept a strong hold on my knee. His thumb started to trace tiny circles on the inside of it.
“You don’t have to be home for a little while. Wanna go somewhere else? Somewhere...private?” he whispered.
“Yeah,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. Now this made me just a little apprehensive. I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I should have guessed he’d take me to the soccer field, it was where he was comfortable, and also where he knew no one would be around.
I was quiet as he put his car in park, and turned his lights out. He reached underneath him, and moved his seat the whole way back. With a sly grin, he patted his lap.
“Why don’t you come sit with me?” he asked.
I climbed over to him and sat in his lap sideways, with my legs hanging in the space between the seats.
“Much better,” he said. He started pushing back strands of hair that were covering my shoulders, and smoothing each one down my back. “I was wishing we could sit like this at the theater, but that might have been a little rude.”
I snickered. “Probably.”
“I didn’t want to say it around your family, but do you know what I was thinking when I picked you up?”
“What’s that?” I asked.
“That you look so sexy tonight. You’re the hottest girl in school, by far.”
I wasn’t sure what to say, so I just smiled.
His hands rubbed my shoulders, and moved inward to finger the top button on my sweater.
“Don’t be nervous,” he whispered. “I’m not gonna take it off, we’ll go nice and slow,” he promised.
I watched his hands as they pushed my loosened sweater off my shoulders. I was still covered, mostly anyway.
“Relax, close your eyes,” he suggested softly.
I did, and felt his lips on my shoulder.
“I just wanna kiss you right here,” he murmured, and did it again. “Is this okay?”
“Yes,” I breathed.
It was very, very okay.
I shifted so that I could face him a little more, and leaned my head back as his lips traveled all over my shoulder, and over the hollow of my throat. He made a little humming sound as he made his way across my collar bone, taking little nibbles.
Finally, his lips found mine. The kiss was immediately intense. I eagerly parted my lips for him, and felt his warm breath rush into me. I felt his firm touch moving up and down my back, then around to my ribs. His hands moved up the front of my body, almost to the point I would have pushed them away, but he felt me tense and backed off.
Things picked up quickly again though. He laced his fingers through the hair at the base of my neck, and pressed himself closer to me. Unfortunately, that pressed me right into the steering wheel, making his horn go off and break the night’s silence.
“Shit,” he said, laughing and pulling away. He sighed and squeezed my shoulder. “We should go, in case somebody heard that.”
I frowned. “Yeah. What time is it? My phone is off.”
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked, then turned around to show me the display on it.
“Nice, you’ll have me home with ten minutes to spare,” I said. “I don’t suppose you can drive with me in your lap, can you?” I asked, wrapping my arms around his shoulders.
He chuckled. “I wish.”
I got back in my own seat and buttoned my sweater again. I smoothed it out to make sure I didn’t look like I’d just been...well, doing what I’d just been doing.
“I’m sure your, uh, Dad, will be relieved when I’ve got you home on time and in one piece. He looked kinda like he wanted to eat me alive before we left.”
I burst out laughing, but then quickly pulled the visor down to inspect myself in the mirror.
No marks. I don’t think he could leave one on me if he tried, he wouldn’t be strong enough, but still.
Whew!
“Don’t worry,” I told him. “I think you’re safe.”
A/N: Well, what do we think? I think we can assume that when Swan gets home, there will be a fair amount of giggling with her and Ness, and that some details will be left out ;)
Confession time, I am a huge theater dork, and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to work it into AGU lol. In case you are wondering what play Tara is afraid to say, it’s Macbeth. I’m sure there is a lot more to it, but long story short: the play is considered cursed, so much that’s bad luck to even utter that name in a theater. I really don’t even like typing it :-P
