Chapter 17: Light at the End of the Tunnel
Minutes were slowly dragging into hours as time ticked by. Drizzt’s knees were screaming in protest by his every movement, his legs begging to be stretched for just a little while, his palms raw and bleeding, but the pain from all of id lod long since faded to a dull throbbing. Dirt and dust stuck to his hair, turning it into an ashen colour. Yet, he stubbornly pressed on, continuing through the narrow tunnel as it slowly twirled upwards. The floor was wet and slippery, at times making it more than difficult for him to continue when he encountered a particularly steep area.
The first twinges of claustrophobic-panic had long since made their existence known to him, and only the thought of seeing Catti-brie kept him from truly panicking. The sound of dripping water was all around him, confirming his suspicions that he was crawling in the remains of an underground river-tunnel – hollowed out through years by the constant flow of water, until, at some time long ago and for unknown reasons, the river had dried out.
He paused suddenly, all of his senses reaching out towards the faint breeze he could feel playing lightly against his face, coming from somewhere ahead. It was cool and fresh, and he resumed his crawling with renewed vigor, knowing that a possible exit was close. Forcing his eyes out of the infrared spectrum and into the normal, ignoring the pain it brought with it, he spotted a single, tiny dot of light far ahead in the otherwise pitch-dark tunnel. And soon after, a faint, incomprehensible muddle of voices reached his ears, a sound that, despite the gruffness in them that indicated dwarves, sounded as sweet as angels’ song to his ears.
Shortly after, he had reached the hole at the end of the tunnel, though which he could feel fresh air. He clawed at the wall, enlarging the 6-inch hole, not caring for his fingers that once again started bleeding from this rough treatment. Finally making it large enough for him to fit through, he looked out, and felt tears of joy upon spotting the ledge from which he had fallen for what seemed so long ago. He could see that the hole leading to the mines had been enlarged, so that even a grown dwarf could pass through, and he could see several dwarves on a small, makeshift platform – some which he recognized as mages.

Catti-brie jumped in her chair when Wulfgar practically barreled through her door, nearly taking the door down in the process. Yet, she only needed to hear the drow’s name from the barbarian, before she was on her feet, running down the hallway faster than she ever had before, again and again thanking the gods.
Driven by some instinct unknown to her, she did not run to the cleric’s quarters – what otherwise would have been the most logical place, but instead headed straight for where the drow had fallen, for some reason knowing he would be there. And indeed he was, sitting on a rock, his skin more gray than black of dust, bleeding from several wounds and looking as if he was on the wedge of collapsing. But he was there, and he was alive, and that was all that mattered to her.
She dropped to her knees, pulling him into a fierce hug, tears flowing down her cheeks without her doing anything to stop them. Drizzt smiled, and wrapped her in his own arms, holding her close as if he never would let go again, softly muttering nonsense into her ear and gently rocking her back and forth.
