Wow. It's been exactly a week since I updated.
Oh, and I thought I should address something that I forgot in the last chapter. The reason no condom was used: 1. Because it's kind of impractical for a vampire to use one, since the venom in their bodily fluids would burn through the rubber, even if Whitaker doesn't know what Jasper is yet; and 2. Vampires can't catch or carry diseases, and Whitaker can't have one since he's never been with anybody.
Ok. Just needed to say that in case someone noticed.
I woke up alone. I reached out, feeling for Jasper before I opened my eyes, but he wasn’t there. I stood and went to the shower. I felt used, like I was a victim of “love ‘em and leave ‘em.” I didn’t want to think of Jasper like that, but I had told him I loved him, numerous times, and he only had sex with me. He hadn’t responded. And then, I woke up alone. My eyes swam with unshed tears. Could he have only been using me for a new experience? I couldn’t stay any longer. Today was a week since Gramps’ death; I needed to go home. To my home.
I packed my bags and carried them and Scruffball downstairs. Carlisle looked up from the paper he was reading at the table.
“Whitaker, what are you doing?” he asked.
“I’ve overstayed my welcome. I’ll go home this afternoon after school,” I replied.
“Nonsense! You’ve only been here for a week. There’s no need for you to leave.”
“I need to go.” I pulled down a bowl and fixed myself some cereal. Edward walked in as I poured the milk.
“Where do you need to go?” Edward asked.
“Home,” I said simply.
“Does this have anything to do with what happened yesterday?”
I clenched my fist around my spoon. “It has nothing to do with anything. I just need to go home.” I tried to eat my cereal in silence.
Jasper, unfortunately, was the next person to walk into the kitchen.
“Whitaker… Why is your stuff in the hallway?” he asked.
“I’m going home after school,” I answered, still focused on my cereal. The room felt suddenly tense.
“I need to go pick up Bella for school,” Edward stated.
“Can I hitch a ride with you?”
“…I guess.” I didn’t look at Jasper as I walked into the hall to grab my stuff.
I chanced a glance back, though, while Edward grabbed his keys. Jasper’s face was a mask of pain and confusion. I couldn’t talk to him yet, so I just hugged Scruffball to my chest and followed Edward out of the house.
I waited in the car while Edward went in to get Bella. I was in the back seat, still holding Scruffball to my chest. I tried to ignore their worried looks when they got back in the car.
It turned out I had to avoid a lot of those same looks all day.
I set my backpack down in homeroom. I saw Lynn walking up to me, so I turned to face her. I wasn’t prepared for the slap that struck across my left cheek.
“What was that for?” I demanded.
“I thought I told you to stay away from Jasper,” she replied.
“You did, but you have no claim on him.” She slapped me again. “Would you stop slapping me?”
“I saw you yesterday.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I was on my way to La Push beach yesterday afternoon when I saw you…groping Jasper. You need to keep your perverse ideas to yourself and stop corrupting the good people here.”
“I have corrupted no one! And I think you have it backwards; I wasn’t the one doing the groping!” She laughed in my face.
“Do you want me to let the whole school know what you are? They’d chew you up and spit you out, you sick pervert.”
“I’m the pervert? I’ve kept to myself. And I’m not the one stalking people who have no interest in me.” She raised her hand to strike me once more, but I grabbed her wrist. “Don’t hit me again.” She smirked, but then paled when she looked past me. I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Don’t strike her,” I heard Jasper’s voice in my ear.
“What kind of person do you think I am?” I threw back over my shoulder. “I may be gay, but I was raised to never hit a lady.” I released Lynn’s wrist. “Though, I’m not sure you fit that description.” Her face clouded in fury. It was then I noticed the quiet classroom. Everyone was staring at the three of us. I took in their shocked and curious gazes. When I looked back at Lynn, she was smirking smugly.
“Looks like you’re out,” she gloated.
“I just lost my grandfather a week ago. I don’t need to deal with this.” Her face immediately fell. “Don’t follow,” I muttered to Jasper as I turned to leave the room.
The teacher followed me out into the hallway.
“Mr. Hill, you need to come back to class,” he said.
“I’m sorry, sir. I just need a few minutes.”
“I am sorry, Whitaker, for what you’ve been through. I can promise you that many of the teachers here, myself included, will be very understanding. If anyone attempts to bully you, let one of us know.”
“Thank you, sir.” Not so much of a stick in the mud after all… He patted my shoulder.
There was yelling coming from the classroom, so I followed him back to class.
What I found there was not what I expected. Lynn was cowering in her seat while Jasper and a couple of other students lectured her on her treatment of me. They fell silent when they saw me. I looked at each and every student’s face. Most of the girls seemed angry, but I could tell the anger was not directed at me. Every guy, besides Jasper, seemed a little apprehensive of me, but not condemning of me. No one had the same look of hate the football player had had, none of the looks I was used to.
I met Jasper’s eyes last.
He seemed scared and angry and in pain all at once. I gave him a small smile; he came forward and hugged me.
“I’m sorry for last night,” he said so quietly that I almost didn’t hear him, even though his lips were right at my ear.
“We can talk later,” I replied. He nodded and let me go. I noticed that everyone had turned away or was looking away discreetly to give us a moment. I chuckled and picked up my stuff as the bell rang.
I took my seat next to Bella with a heavy sigh.
“What is it?” she instantly asked.
“I had an interesting homeroom,” I answered.
“What happened?”
I didn’t get a chance to reply, since a brown-haired boy approached me. I recognized him from homeroom; he had been one of the lecturers.
“Um…Whitaker, right?” he asked.
“Yes…” I didn’t know his name.
“Mike,” he supplied. “I just wanted to say… It was awesome how you stood up to Lynn back there. Man, she can be a bitch.”
“I noticed.”
“And about the whole…you being…” He seemed at a loss for words as he gestured aimlessly in the air.
“Gay?”
“Yeah. Don’t sweat it. Most of us are pretty cool about that kind of thing.” He stressed the word most, I noticed. I smiled.
“Thank you,” I said sincerely. He nodded and went back to his seat.
“What happened?” Bella asked again.
“Lynn confronted me about seeing Jasper and me yesterday. She slapped me a couple of times...” I touched my still stinging cheek. “And everyone heard our conversation. Surprisingly, they all seemed to be supportive. Nobody made any jokes or seemed to hate me. Guess I’m lucky.” She nodded. Edward sat quietly beside her, obviously lost in his thoughts. I let my mind drift, turning over mine and Jasper’s relationship…
I thought back to our second date. Jasper had seemed just as nervous when he asked me out again, though we did homework together in the afternoons, pretty much spending every day with each other. He didn’t take me to the movies again. Instead, he had taken me to a small café in Port Angeles.
Again, he refused to let me pay for anything. He bought me a coffee and a cinnamon roll, but he didn’t get anything for himself.
I was pleased to discover that local musicians and poets were performing at the café. When Jasper had told me he played guitar, I had confided in him my love of amateur performances. Lost in my excitement at hearing so many different unrenowned talents, I had grabbed Jasper’s hand, kissed it, and not let go.
By the end of the performances, it was late. I finally turned back to Jasper, but he was looking down, staring at our joined hands.
“Jasper? Are you all right?” I asked.
He looked up, surprise obvious in his eyes. “You…you…” His gaze fell back to our hands. Uncomfortable now, I relaxed my hand from its tight grip on his.
“Sorry if I hurt you. I wasn’t paying attention.”
“No, you didn’t hurt me. You…you…kissed me.”
“We’re dating. Can’t I?”
“I just…” He pulled me up from my seat and led me outside. “Do you want to watch the stars again? Since the night is clear.”
“Sure.” I noticed he hadn’t let my hand go.
He opened the passenger side door to his car, opening it so I could slide in.
“Um…Jasper…”
“Yes?”
“I kind of need my hand back to get in the car.”
“Oh.” He released my hand and got in the driver’s seat. He was silent as he pulled out of the parking lot, heading back to Forks; he didn’t take my hand again, though he did have his resting on the gearshift. I tentatively touched it with my fingers. In a movement so swift I almost missed it, he intertwined his fingers with mine. I only smiled…
Back in the present, I smiled and looked to my left. Edward turned and met my gaze behind Bella’s head. There was something in his eyes… Something that scared me… It was almost resentment, but it was stronger than that. I faced the front, not wanting to linger under his gaze. I don’t like feeling scared of anyone, but right then, I was scared of Edward.
Sounding good?
Gaps of Misery--Yeah, it's a sort of lame excuse, but it works. :) And I think Jasper's 'coming out' is very close. You know, when you first typed that, I was thinking, "Um...he's kind of already out, don'tcha think?" But then I realized what you meant. -lol-
Song of Time--I hope the little flashback was good romantic development. And you have nothing to apologize for. All opinions have some meaning to them. :)
wkuklover--I think it'll be a couple more chapters before that happens. ;)
