Jacob’s knees were shaking as he parked his bike in the garage and headed inside. From the look Charlie had given him earlier, his dad probably had been really worried. Jacob couldn’t really blame him. He wasn’t normally so irresponsible.
When he opened the door he saw his dad in the living room with Sam. Billy turned his head when he heard the door open. “Jacob, where were you?”
Jacob lowered himself into a chair. “Out with someone,” he answered. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you where I was going, but I wanted to be sure of something first.”
“Sure of what?” Billy asked, wheeling himself over to the table; Sam right behind him. “Now is not the time to be disappearing without a word to anyone.”
Jacob turned to Sam. “Do you remember those dreams I was telling you about? You said they meant my soul mate was near. I didn’t believe you then, but I do now. I think I’ve imprinted.”
Sam snorted. “And I thought it was supposed to be rare. Come on, Jake, spit it out. Who is it?”
Jacob lowered his gaze to the table. “You’re not gonna like it.”
“Don’t be silly,” Sam tried to assure him. “We know you can’t help it.”
Jacob looked up at Sam again, hoping that if anyone would understand, he would. “I didn’t know it at the time, but the man in those dreams was Liam Cullen.” Both Billy and Sam stared at him blankly, and he felt his cheeks turn hot.
“Jacob, quit playing games,” Sam said at last, breaking the silence. “Who is it really?”
Jacob bit his lip. “I’m telling you the truth. I didn’t mean for it to happen,” he said with a pleading gaze. “In the first dream he was human. In the others he wasn’t, but everything was different. I tried to fight it, I really did, but we were made for each other. It’s just like you said.” Sam glared at him silently. Jacob was too afraid to even look at his dad. “I know this sounds bad. He was who I was with last night.”
“Are you crazy, boy?” Billy blurted out.
“Probably,” Jacob sighed. “I don’t know what happened. A spirit came to me in my dreams and told me I should quit fighting the attraction. It also said all this animosity was unnecessary. And then Liam brought Bella to visit, and Bella gave me some speech about how they’re not that bad and she’s Switzerland. Liam said if I pretended to go out with him, then Bella would get jealous. Really he was just using her as bait, and I fell for it, but I don’t even care that I was tricked.”
He took a deep breath and paused for a moment. He’d known this was going to be difficult, but he’d never imagined just how difficult. “We went to Seattle yesterday. Carlisle wanted Liam to investigate what was going on up there. I went with him to sort out my feelings. I knew he wouldn’t hurt me, and he didn’t. We were alone, and I was so drunk I couldn’t see straight, but all he did was take care of me. I even woke up to breakfast in bed.”
He could feel Sam’s gaze penetrating him. “What if I told you this meant you couldn’t be part of the pack anymore?”
Jacob frowned. “Then I just hope you’ll still keep Bella and Charlie safe. We found out there’s more going on in Seattle than we thought. Someone was here and stole Bella’s clothes. The Cullens will try to protect them, of course, but they aren’t sure they can do it alone. Someone is going to have to watch both of them at all times. Please don’t punish Bella for my actions.”
Sam raised an eyebrow. “You would really leave the pack without a fight for that leech?”
“I’d die for him,” Jacob answered truthfully. “I was hoping I could convince you to give him a chance. I invited him to the bonfire tonight. I wanted you to see that he isn’t a mindless bloodsucker and that he loves me as much as I love him. We’ve been together in a few different lifetimes, and I’m just really happy to have him back.”
“Billy, could I speak to you for a moment?” Sam asked.
“All right,” Billy answered and followed Sam back to one of the bedrooms.
Jacob waited, his guts twisting themselves into knots. He knew he’d just dropped a massive bombshell on everyone, but he hoped and prayed they would give Liam a chance. If not, he was going to have a problem.
He was about to explode when Billy and Sam returned. Sam let out a long sigh. “Jake, obviously we don’t like the situation. However, I believe you’ve really imprinted on him, and I know better than anyone that you can’t help it. I have decided we will help protect Bella and Charlie. You’re right, we can’t let them suffer because of this; especially not Charlie. Your dad and I will reserve judgment on Liam until after tonight.”
“Thank you!” Jacob cried as he sprang from his chair and wrapped his arms around Sam.
“Don’t thank me yet,” Sam said, pushing him off. “He’d better not cause any trouble. We wanted you to invite Bella tonight so we could try to change her mind.”
“I know,” Jacob nodded. “Liam said he would help me with that. They don’t want her to be changed, either.”
Even though Sam didn’t look like he believed that, Jacob refused to let it crush his small sliver of hope. He went and called Liam to tell him it was okay to come to the bonfire, and to ask him to be on his best behavior. Tonight was important. It would determine both their futures.
Bella sat on the couch, waiting for her ride. A million different things ran through her mind as the minutes ticked by. Jacob had explained imprinting to her, but it still didn’t make any sense for him to go from pining over her to head-over-heels for Liam. There was no doubt that Liam was somehow the puppet-master, and Bella felt a little betrayed. She still loved Edward, but she had to admit to herself that she loved Jacob, too. When Edward had left she’d even found herself thinking about being Jacob’s girl, just like he’d wanted at the time.
She glanced at the clock again. Liam was five minutes late. Being late wasn’t like him, and she wondered if something was wrong. Was Victoria back again? But then she heard the roar of an engine that stopped in her driveway.
Two figures wearing helmets sat astride a brand-new looking motorcycle, and Edward’s silver Volvo was right behind it. Bella grabbed her bag and headed out to meet them. “They’re here. Bye,” she called out to Charlie on her way out the door.
Carlisle took off his helmet and got off the back of the bike. “That was…interesting,” he said as he held out the helmet for Bella.
“That was fun!” Liam laughed.
Edward was behind the wheel of the Volvo, and he looked less than pleased with the situation. Liam rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry, Edward, I’ll take good care of your porcelain doll.”
Bella scowled as she took the helmet. “I’m not a porcelain doll.”
“All right, you two,” Carlisle chided as he got into the Volvo with Edward. “Have fun.”
Edward drove off, leaving Bella with Liam. “Did you just get this?” she asked, putting on the helmet and climbing onto the back of the bike.
“Yep,” Liam answered. “I saw Jacob riding his, and it looked like fun.” The engine roared to life again and Bella held on to Liam as he pulled out of the driveway. She was a little disappointed that he was going the speed limit, but Edward probably had something to do with that. He was always worried about her safety, and it was becoming rather frustrating.
Jacob paced back and forth in the living room, glancing at the clock every few minutes. Billy watched him, deep in thought about the entire situation. Clearly, there was no easy solution to this. All Billy knew for sure was that he loved his son.
Sam came in to grab a few things and chuckled when he saw Jacob. “I’m sure he’ll be here soon.”
“But he’s four minutes late!” Jacob whined. “This is the longest I’ve gone without him since we got together, and I don’t like it.”
“Why don’t you go help set up and get your mind off it?”
Jacob grumbled under his breath but headed out to the cliff to help set up for the bonfire. “The first month or so is always the most intense,” Sam explained to Billy. “He’ll return to his normal self then.”
“Then we can separate them and have the natural order back.”
Sam frowned. “Billy, I don’t like this any more than you do, but I’m not sure that’s possible. It’s hard to understand if you haven’t been through it. If this is a true imprinting, we have no choice but to give the leech a chance. If we give Jake an ultimatum he’ll choose Liam, and we’ll lose him.”
“I don’t want that,” Billy sighed and followed Sam out.
Jacob looked like he was about to explode with excitement when Liam finally arrived. The blond vampire parked the bike and bounded toward his mate, leaping into the larger boy’s arms and clinging to Jacob with his legs wrapped around the werewolf’s waist.
Bella rolled her eyes. “You just saw each other this morning.”
“But that was six hours ago,” Jacob said, still holding Liam. He carried Liam like that all the way to the top of the cliff where the bonfire was being held.
Liam loosened his grip and landed gracefully on his feet. The rest of the pack and the elders were already there and had been informed of the situation. They were all hoping this was not a true imprinting and that Jacob would soon come to his senses.
The only negative comment came from Paul, who mumbled something about the stench and wanting Liam and Bella to move downwind. “You don’t exactly smell like a bouquet of roses either,” Liam shot back as he took a seat as close to the fire as he dared.
“Paul, trade places with me,” Sam ordered. The last thing they wanted was trouble.
“I think he smells good,” Jacob commented, burying his nose in Liam’s neck and breathing deep. “Tastes good, too.”
Liam gently pushed him away. “Save that thought for later.”
Jacob mock-scowled at him but went over and grabbed a hot dog from the cooler to roast over the fire. They’d brought a huge cooler stuffed full of food, which would normally have been overkill for such a small group, but all of it was devoured in record time.
Bella had been a little afraid that the others wouldn’t like her any more, but other than Paul’s comment about Liam, the mood was light and cheerful. Jacob’s friends treated her just as they had before the Cullens’ return. Liam sat silently behind Jacob just watching the others. Seth kept glancing over at Liam, his expression more curious than anything.
“Ugh, I’m stuffed,” Jacob groaned after he’d crammed the last hot dog in his mouth.
“Wow!” Liam shook his head and pulled Jacob back to lean against him. “Where do you put it all?”
Jacob laughed and shrugged. “I’m a growing boy.”
Emily and the girl who had come with Jarod started cleaning up while the others got comfortable. It was time to tell the old legends. Billy cleared his throat and began with the story of the spirit warriors and how the chief ended up merging with a wolf.
Then he spoke of the cold ones. There were a few glances toward Liam, but no one said anything. Liam listened intently. He found the whole thing fascinating, though he couldn’t help the smug grin that appeared on his face when Billy started talking about the tribe’s treaty with the Cullens. “That’s my brother, the incurable pacifist,” he mumbled. “The thought of anyone seeing him as a possible threat baffles me, though.”
“Didn’t you listen to the rest of the story?” Billy frowned.
“Yes, I listened. The first pair of vampires that came here went on a killing spree. But Carlisle is quite obviously different. It should only take five minutes of knowing him to figure that out.”
“Why don’t you tell a story?” Jacob said, interrupting the exchange. He badly wanted his dad to like Liam, and he didn’t want to take the chance of the conversation turning down a bad road.
“Me?” Liam asked, a little confused. “This is supposed to be your thing. What story would I tell?”
“I don’t know, pick one. You probably know a lot of them. You were a druid, weren’t you?”
“For a short time,” Liam nodded. “All right, I’ll tell a story.” He paused a moment, trying to think of one. “Okay, this story begins in the Garden of Eden, but it’s a little different than what you’ll read in the modern-day Bible.” He took a moment to make sure everyone was listening. To his surprise, all eyes were on him; they were actually going along with this.
“Eve was not Adam’s first wife. After God created Adam in his image, he created Lilith in the image of the Goddess. Lilith took after her inspiration perfectly. She was strong-willed, but feminine and breathtakingly beautiful. Adam liked her at first, but after a little while he grew tired of her. He asked God to give him a new wife, a more subservient one.
And so Lilith was banished from the garden, and Eve was created. Lilith was angered by Adam’s actions, and she held on to that anger as she wandered alone in the desert. Her rage only grew in intensity when she found out she was pregnant. As she wandered further and further north, her anger twisted her soul into something ugly. By the time she finally gave birth to a baby boy she was no longer human; she was a succubus that was hell-bent on destroying Adam and all of his sons, including her own. She grabbed the babe by the neck and shook him until his body went limp, then she discarded the body and continued her journey.
This isn’t where the story ends though. You see, the goddess Rhiannon was nearby when this occurred. She had left her homeland to wander the earth, as she sometimes did. When she found the dead newborn she scooped him up into her arms with tears in her eyes and breathed life back into him. Right then and there she decided she would keep the child as her own. She named him Caelan, and carried him back to Whales with her. There she raised young Caelan and taught him both the ways of her people and those of the local humans. Caelan grew into a strong, handsome young man, well away from his birth mother who was wreaking havoc in the desert.
Rhiannon loved her son and often feared for his safety. Lilith was still out there, after all. Who knew what she would do if she ever found out the child she had with Adam was still alive and well? Sometimes the worry drove Rhiannon to tears. Well, one evening while she sobbed under the full moon a flower began to grow from the ground where her tears landed. It was a rose, but not just any rose. Some of the petals were red, while others were a bright pink, making an enchanting pattern. Another major difference was that when she picked one of these roses, the stem bled. It wasn’t real blood of course, but a sweet sap. She didn’t know why the roses had appeared, but she thought they were pretty and she showed them to Caelan. He liked them, too, and grew them in his garden.
Rhiannon eventually left Caelan. She still loved him, but she was beginning to pine for a husband and child of her own. Caelan lived alone for many years, blissfully unaware of what his birth mother was up to. For you see, Lilith had accidentally created a horrid creature. One of her victims survived, and although no one is quite sure how it happened, he became the very first vampire.
Anyway, when Caelan became old and gray he decided his wisdom should not die with him. He searched the land for a few young lads with promise, and under the brightest full moon of the year the Whitemoon Brotherhood was founded. He taught them everything his adopted mother had taught him. He also showed them how to grow blood roses, as they came to be called.
Those seven young men stayed with Caelan until his final days. They kept up the traditions and continued to pass them down to a select few. They built Whitemoon Keep and lived in harmony with the world for quite some time.
Then the Romans came, and vampires came with them. No one had ever seen such a thing before. The locals looked to Father Arridor Vaughn, the leader of the Brotherhood, for answers and protection. At first he was just as clueless as everyone else. But then when he heard the tale of how vampires had come into being, something told him the Brotherhood’s sacred flower was the answer.
He ordered his brothers to harvest the sap and coat their blades with it. A few of them also drank it, hoping it would protect them. As it turned out, Father Vaughn was right. The blades coated in the sap of the blood rose cut right through the monsters’ formerly impenetrable skin. One of the warriors who drank the sap was bitten and suffered no ill effects. The vampire who bit him, however, was poisoned and died.”
Liam finished his tale and sat back with a soft smile. “Is any of that true?” Bella asked.
Liam shrugged. “The flower is real enough. While I was a Whitemoon Druid we grew it in the courtyard. When I sought revenge for my brother’s death, I harvested some of the sap, and surprisingly enough, it worked.”
“Then how did you end up being changed?” Jacob asked.
“Very bad timing. If you drink the sap, it doesn’t last in your system forever. Carlisle tells people I was bitten on the spot, but Rudolfo actually took me alive and confiscated my weapons. Neither of us really like to talk about it much.”
“It’s getting late,” Billy interrupted.
Liam looked down at his watch. “Yes, it is. It’s almost time for someone to relieve Esme.”
“That would be me,” Jacob said with a grin. “You can keep me company if you want.”
“Of course I’ll keep you company,” Liam answered as he got to his feet.
They gathered everything up and headed home. It was only when they got to Billy’s house that Bella realized how tired she was. “Who’s going to take me home?” she mumbled sleepily from the couch.
“Carlisle,” Liam answered while reaching for his phone. “I’m staying with Jake, and we didn’t think Charlie would appreciate Edward bringing you home this late. Alice is out hunting with Jasper.”
Bella only nodded and curled up. She was sleeping soundly by the time Carlisle arrived. He wrapped her up in a blanket and took her home without waking her. Charlie was waiting up, and Edward was waiting in Bella’s bedroom.
“Thanks for bringing her home,” Charlie said to Carlisle on his way out. “I would have thought Liam would bring her home since he was her ride there.”
Carlisle only shrugged. “Young love….”
“Bella tells me you pretty much raised your brother.”
Carlisle nodded. “Yes, our mother died from complications during childbirth. Our father was busy with the church, so that left me to care for him.”
“I know it probably isn’t any of my business, but don’t you think he’s a bit out of control? I mean, I heard that before he moved out here he was a stripper.”
Carlisle let out a deep sigh. “No, it isn’t any of your business, though I understand your concern for your friend’s son. My brother does have a few screws loose, but all things considered he is a good man, I assure you. Now, I really must be going. Good night.”
Charlie seemed to be satisfied for the moment. He gave Carlisle a light nod and headed up to check on Bella before going to bed himself.

A/N: I wanted to make a little note here that while the story in this chapter is mostly made up, I did base it off of actual vampire and Pagan lore. It’s interesting stuff.
Also, I don’t know when I’m going to be able to get the next chapter out. My beta is leaving soon for Hawaii. Can you believe it? She’s going to a tropical climate and she won’t smuggle me in her suitcase! I’ll be left in the cold snow. *dramatic sigh* Then she says she’ll be busy catching up on work for a while when she gets back.
