Chapter 19 – The Unseen Guest
The second week that Christine had spent with Raoul, she’d woken up to violent spells of nausea, unable to keep anything on her stomach for most of the day. He finally called a doctor in spite of her protests that it was nothing.
“Well, Madame, I am pleased to say that you are a very healthy woman,” the old doctor announced.
“Then, what happened? Why have I been feeling so poorly?” she asked with raised eyebrows.
“Your symptoms are quite normal for your condition. You are going to be a mother,” he replied kindly.
She was certain that her heart fluttered. Her expression went blank for a moment as she took in what she had just heard. A child – she was carrying Erik’s child. Her hand moved instinctively to rest over her belly.
“If you should need anything, please don’t hesitate to send for me. I’ll leave you to rest now. Do you want me to tell your husband or would you prefer to give him the news yourself?” the doctor asked.
Of course, he would have assumed that she and Raoul were married.
“No…no, I will tell him later. Thank you,” she answered softly.
He smiled and nodded. As soon as the door was closed behind him, Christine gave in to tears. Too much emotion was coursing through her at once – elation at knowing that she now had a part of Erik that would be hers forever, and deep despair that he was not in her life anymore. Giving him a child was something that she had often dreamed of, but never had she imagined it like this.
His note had made it clear that he didn’t want to be with her anymore, although she wondered if it would have made any difference if he’d known at the time that he was going to be a father. She tried to convince herself that none of that mattered now. The fact was that he didn’t love her, and she would not try to use their baby to get him back.
Tender images of their lovemaking flashed through her mind as she gently caressed her mid-section. Yes, she understood how they had conceived a child. It hurt to think that the moments they’d spent together in intimacy had not meant as much to him, but she made a choice to give him her body knowing that there could be consequences; now she would face them alone. Reality was cruel. Her sobs grew so intense that they attracted Raoul’s attention. Slowly, he cracked the door open and came inside.
“Christine, what’s wrong? What did the doctor tell you?” he asked, imagining the worst and going to sit down on the bed beside her.
She felt completely trapped. There was no way out of the situation; she would have to tell him the truth. Eventually he would find out anyway. There was silence as she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.
“Please, whatever it is, for pity’s sake, Christine, tell me,” Raoul pleaded as he placed an arm around her shoulders.
“I’m pregnant,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
He looked baffled. “What?”
“I said I am pregnant – expecting a child,” she answered, still quietly.
This time, there could be no doubt that he understood her. His arm fell from around her and he immediately got to his feet. Obviously, he had not thought of the worst situation possible. In his mind, the news of her pregnancy was more terrible than an illness.
“My God, Christine!” he yelled. “Why on earth did you let him bed you? What were you thinking!?”
He had seen them together, but never had he imagined that she would have allowed any man to touch her without first being his wife.
She shuddered at his outburst of anger, and then her own ire started to rise.
“I loved him, Raoul. If you want nothing more to do with me ever again, fine! I will leave. There must be somewhere I can go,” she stormed back and started to put her foot on the floor.
Raoul did not want her to leave, however. He could not deny that he felt he might have made a mistake now, but he was not willing to let her get away so easily. Perhaps he could still find a way to turn things in his favor.
“No, wait…don’t go,” he said, putting his hand up. “You should stay. I can help you.”
It took all that he had to keep from raising his voice again.
“Oh can you really?” she asked skeptically. “How?”
“Your child needs a father. I can help you there. If you accept, we could be married and no one will ever know that the baby is not my own.”
Christine put her face in her hands. “No,” she answered simply, shaking her head.
“No? Then please tell me what you intend to do,” Raoul answered irritably.
“I don’t know yet…”
“Christine, listen to what I am going to tell you. Society is not kind to mothers who have no husband. No one will want to give you employment or a place to stay. You will be ridiculed, shunned by everyone!”
“Stop it!” she cried. “Just stop it!” Her fist punched the bed.
He knew that in her current state of mind, she would not listen to anything else he had to say.
“All right then. Just…stay here and try to get some rest. There is time later for you to consider my offer. I’m not asking you for an answer now, only that you think about it,” he said in a somewhat more calm tone of voice.
Christine only nodded, refusing to look at him.
