Chapter 19
Dawn began to break over the mountaintops. Bringing a little heat after the cold of the night. Despite the early hour the camp was active. People were moving around, moving into formation. Wives and children were saying goodbye to men in shining uniforms. Silver chain mail, with white tunics emblazoned with red hearts on the chest. Some carried swords, others spears.
At the top of a hillside, watching the troops move into their configuration was Michelle. She wore no armour, she hoped that she wouldn’t need it. All she was armed with was dagger, a simple blade 13 inches long. They had spent almost a month planning this attack and now it was here she felt sick to her stomach. What had she been thinking? How could they stand a chance? They couldn’t succeed.
“Michelle?”
She looked over her shoulder with a gasp. She’d been so deep in thought she hadn’t heard Alice approaching. The young woman moved slowly, her leg was stiff, but she moved surely. She had pushed herself hard during her recovery and could walk unaided. She couldn’t run at a full sprint but she could still move quite fast if she had to. They both wore the same clothing; white trousers and tunics with white hearts on the chest but they refused chain mail protection. If their plan worked it would be unneeded and if it didn’t, then it would be pointless.
“Alice.” Michelle tried to smile as her friend approached, but her thoughts were too heavy and dark, she couldn’t manage it. She watched the soldiers continue to say goodbye to their families, for some it would be the last time. “It’s so quiet.” She whispered as Alice stepped to her side. She was right; there was no birdsong to welcome the dawn, not even the whisper of the wind in the trees. It was as though the whole world was waiting for them to act first.
“The calm before the storm.” Alice said in a quiet voice. There was something about the atmosphere today that made you want to be quiet.
“I don’t want to go to war.” Michelle said, voicing her fear for the first time. “I guess no one truly wants to ever go to war. But standing on the edge of a battle I cannot escape seems worse somehow. I don’t even have the option of running away. I’m not sure I can do this Alice.”
“I was not sure I bring you here and yet it happened. If there is one thing I have learned it’s that people are often capable of so much more than they give themselves credit for.”
Michelle’s eyes looked down to Alice’s leg. The clothing hid the injury well but she knew that it was there, a large piece of her thigh was gone and a scarred mess remained. No one had held much hope that Alice would walk unaided again. Yet here she was.
“But still.” Michelle muttered, whatever good feeling she’d had no fading. “Our army, against a force twice as strong. There is no hope.”
“There is always hope. Perhaps in this case it is a foolish kind of hope but it is hope nonetheless. The hope of a fool set me on my quest in the first place. It was a fools hope that allowed me to find you and bring you here. The hope of a fool has brought us this far, so do not doubt it and its power.”
“And we have you on our side. Alice the mighty warrior who has travelled far and wide and faced many foes in the hope of fining the Maid of Hearts and restoring the throne.” Michelle said, the faint flicker of a smile finally making an appearance. “That must count for something.”
This time it was Alice’s smile and hopeful look that faded.
“Alice?” She pressed, but Alice stayed silent for a few minutes before talking. Her tone was one of serious gravity.
“When I was with you in your cabin. When I was shrunk and you and I used to…do those things. I began to forget who I was. I succumbed to the influence that is sweeping it’s way across Wonderland. The reason I was given this mission was because it was thought I would be immune. But I’m not. Faced with the Queen of Spades herself, the source of this powerful decedance; I don’t know if I will be of any use.”
Michelle looked shocked but maintained her decorum. She grasped Alice’s hands tightly and looked deep into the blue eyes of her surrogate daughter.
“Just having you by my side will be more useful than a thousand soldiers.”
Alice smiled and Michelle kissed the full lips of the girl passionately. Alice returned the kiss with just as much enthusiasm but broke away first before the two of them could get carried away.
“Come.” She said. “Your army awaits.”
She led Michelle down to the valley floor where the last of the troops were saying goodbye to their families before falling into line. At the head of the line, dressed in the same manner as the rest of the troops, only his chain mail was golden instead of silver, stood the Prince of hearts. Around his waist was a large sword. Alice had seen it earlier, even knowing next to nothing about weaponry she could tell just by looking that it was a beautiful yet dangerous blade that should be feared. The prince smiled as the two girls approached and stood to attention. Michelle looked at him with love and pride. Alice’s eyes however were drawn to the large eared, and furry tailed, person standing behind the prince.
“Chester?” She gasped and ran up to him. He looked fine in the armour of the Hearts with the sword by his side, but Alice wasn’t going to tell him that.
“Mistress.” He said, trying to sound serious.
“Chester what are you doing?”
“What I can Mistress.” He said, this time managing to sound totally serious.
“Chester, NO.” Alice yelled, rising panic was in her voice. “You could be killed.”
“If either by my life or death I can aid you Mistress, then I gladly accept my fate.”
“NO.” Alice shouted. “I won’t let you. I want you to stay here where you’ll be safe.”
“And what of these other soldiers Mistress?” Chester asked. “What choice do they have? I wish to go to this war and help you, yet you would have me stay. What of those who wish to stay but are ordered to go? How do you justify that?”
Alice fell silent. Chester was right of course. She couldn’t stop him if he wanted to. He was bound to aid her while he saw himself as in her debt for saving his life. He saw this as the best way to help her.
“Please. Come back to be when this is over.” She said, feeling tears rise in her eyes. He nodded and smiled, showing his fanged teeth. “I intend to Mistress.”
Michelle looked to her husband, there were no words that could be said that would explain even a fraction of what she was thinking or feeling. He understood this, because the same this was occurring with him.
“We’ll buy you the time you need.” He said strictly. “We will fight to the very last man. For you. Our Queen. LETS MOVE OUT.” He yelled the last part and at either side of him two soldier’s put horns to their lips and the valley was suddenly filled with a deep echoing sound that vibrated the very air.
Michelle and Alice stood to one side as the army moved off as one. The sound of their footfalls became like the pounding of a drum. Alice couldn’t bare to watch them knowing it would be the last time some of those brave souls would ever march away from their families. She took Michelle’s arm and guided her away. They had a long journey of their own to march on.
**************
Almost half a day later Alice and Michelle knelt down low, hiding behind trees. Ahead of them stood the magnificent royal palace. The walls were made of white stone that glowed in the noonday sun. They had to be almost five hundred yards away, and between them and the castle lay nothing but flat grassland. Alice and Michelle, even at such a distance, could see soldiers patrolling along the high parapets.
“We have no choice now but to wait.” Alice said. “When the Prince attacks those soldiers will race to the other wall to defend the palace. Then we can rush forward without being seen.”
To keep her mind off her fear Alice checked the satchel hanging on her shoulder. It held everything she hoped may come in handy if they ended up in a tight spot. Her dagger, the blade was becoming dull from the frequent use she had given it during her quest but it still had a few slashes left in it yet. Two bottles full of liquid, one was labelled BIG, the other SMALL. They contained a tea made from the Mushrooms of size, very handy if things took a turn for the worse. A key, it was said to open all locks although Alice hadn’t yet found a use for it on her journey. But her mother had once said ‘it is better to have and not need that to need and not have.’ Sound advice if you cared to listen to it. The final item left was another she had never used, because this one could only be used once. It was a small blue ball that was filled with light, a bead of logic. It would allow her to keep her mind clear when in the deepest confusion. She had been tempted to use it a couple of times during her journey, but had held back as if some instinct had stopped her knowing that it might be needed now.
Michelle pulled her dagger from its sheath and held it in her hand. There was no need to other than the fact it made her feel better to be armed. Her hands were shaking and she could hear her heart pounding in her head.
Suddenly there came the sound of horns echoing through the air. The noise was familiar to both Alice and Michelle. They had heard it a few hours ago, the war horns of the soldiers of Hearts. Almost at once the soldiers in the to women’s sights ran and vanished to the other side of the castle. Alice and Michelle waited a few seconds, just to make sure no one was coming back to watch the south wall.
Alice moved first, slinging her bag over her shoulder she hurried as fast as her injured leg would carry her across the field. Michelle was only half a second behind but with her healthier legs she quickly overtook Alice and raced ahead to open the secret entrance. As soon as Michelle reached the wall she rubbed her hands over the stonework. Here he was, right outside her own home, so close and yet so far from the life he had known. But feeling the wall was more than nostalgia, there was a false brick here that when depressed would open the hidden door. Master craftsmen had made sure it blending in perfectly so that neither the switch nor the door could ever be seen. There, the feel of the stone was slightly different. She pressed and the brick sank into the wall and the grinding noise sounded as the internal mechanism worked. A seem appeared and then a thick dark line as the door swung slowly outwards revealing a long dark tunnel running deep into the building.
“Come on.” Michelle said. Her eyes never strayed from the dark passage ahead.
******************
The army of hearts assembled into formation, they were separated into four groups and were gripping their weapons tightly. They stood just out of range of the bowmen who stood behind the castle walls. They would stay out of range for as long as they could, their plan was to draw their enemy out to them. Under a rain of arrows they would be defeated in minutes for they bore no shields to protect them but on the grassy planes was a level playing field they at least stood a chance of holding out long enough for Michelle and Alice to succeed.
The Prince stood next to Chester Kat and both of them stood behind two rows of spearmen. No one said a word at the war horns continued to cry out. Chester gripped his sword tightly and glared at the palace while his ears and tale twitched angrily.
“We’re not so different you and I Chester.” The prince said suddenly. “We are both fighting, not because it is right, but for the women we love.”
Chester looked at him as if he was seeing the prince for the first time. “You do not fight for your people?” He asked. “Or for the fate of the world?” he was surprised when the Prince shook his head.
“Those are causes far too big for one man. He would be crushed under such a burden. An entire army may fight for it but the individual solider fights for his own personal reasons. These small causes are the things that give him the strength to march to the very gates of hell itself. I fight for my lady, to give her time that she may succeed.”
Far away at the castle the drawbridge started to fall and the war horns of the soldiers of hearts were being drowned out my louder horns coming from the palace.
“I fight for my Mistress.” Said Chester. “She saved my life and this is how I can serve her best. But I can no longer imagine myself going somewhere she is not. The concept of not having Alice by my side is one I do not welcome. It goes beyond the bonds of the debt into, dare I say it, devotion. I think you are right sire, when you say I love her.”
“I fight for my daughter.” Came a voice behind him. “I want to see her grow up in a free world where this darkness will be nothing but a story she tells her own children.”
Slowly but surely more and more soldiers called out their reasons for fighting. Most were for wives and children others were stranger things like ‘To stand upon the tallest tower and see the view of Wonderland.’
But there was no time for every soldier to answer because the drawbridge crashed to the ground, making the earth tremble for half a second. From out of the palace, dressed in black armour sporting white Spades came the enemy soldiers. Chester gripped his sword tighter and hissed loudly, baring his teeth.
“This is it Mistress. This is how I repay my debt.”
