Hook closed his eyes a moment, sliding the cold iron of the object that replaced his lost hand across her shoulder back to her neck holding it there. Caitlin found the courage to speak softly once he wasn’t starring down at her in her helpless state. “James . . . I don’t remember doing this to you . . . I don’t remember . . . attacking you . . . . or wounding you in such a way . . .” His eyes opened looking into hers once more. Caitlin’s body trembled slightly as she could see he was far to intoxicated to process what she had just said.
All at once he brought the back of his hand hard across her face, causing her to cry out in pain at the hard blow, “Do you think me such an imbecile? You must to let such a lie pass through your lips and expect me to believe it. How dare you!” Caitlin kept her eyes closed and her face turned away, to overcome with fear to look at him again.
Quickly, she swallowed the lump in her throat and began to speak in a soft whisper, fearful of what it might earn this time. “James, you must believe me. The last thing I remember was falling asleep in your arms . . . laying beside you. . . after you . . .after we. . . we. . .” Her eyes closed tighter as she bit back the rest of her sentence. To embarrassed to say it out loud.
“Had sex woman! Is it so hard to say? We all know quite well it was difficult enough for you to perform the act. Six weeks of holding out from me, from your own husband, he entire ship and probley all of Neverland knows of your inabilities to submit to the one you belong to!” He shouted at her suddenly raising his hook and slamming it into the wall just next to her face. Caitlin quickly turned her head the other way keeping her eyes closed tighter still.
He growled reaching up turning her face towards him, holding her jaw painfully tight so she couldn’t turn her face away. “You are mine, you belong to me. To do with as I please and what I will! I should have you flogged in front of the entire ship for what you pulled today!”
Caitlin had the sudden hope that perhaps this was a dream. Perhaps she hadn’t awoken from her slumber as of yet and it was some horrible nightmare that she could wake up from any moment. How was she to tell if she could not pinch herself to see. The smack across her face and the feel of her heart beat in her cheek where his hand came to contact her jaw felt real enough. But sometimes things in your dreams could feel as real as if they were actually happening. “Then have me flogged James.” She whispered.
James was drunk, there was no doubting it, but even in such a state he never expected to hear her say that. He leaned closer looking at her, “What did you say?” This was gut wrenching, and it felt as if Caitlin’s heart jumped up in her throat as she knew she had to answer him but only God himself knew what would be his response.
“If that is what you think I deserve . . . then have me flogged before the eyes of all of your crew.” He just stood there, leaning close to her starring down at her as if he’d frozen in place. Caitlin opened her eyes and looked up at him, her lip quivering as she tried her best not to burst into tears. “I don’t remember doing these things you say I’ve done . . . . but I’ll accept your punishment if that . . . . is what you want.” She whispered her voice shivering, as she was very afraid of his sentence he intended to issue.
James just looked at her silently, his eyes narrowing a few times as if he was trying to clear his thoughts. It was as if his senses where trying to scream through the ocean of rum he’d consumed since he’d returned to his cabin earlier in the day. For several long and agonizing moments, it felt as if time had stopped and stood absolutely still, Caitlin couldn’t breathe or turn her eyes away.
Suddenly James’ rage melted away and he dropped his head resting against her chest. His anger forgotten and pushed a side it was as if he was a whole different person. Caitlin gasped leaning her head back, shocked at the sudden change of his emotions. “Caitlin why . . .” He said in a voice that sounded as if it was desperately pleading for an answer to the riddle that was plaguing him. His hook was still stuck into the wall next to her face and his hand slid down to rest against her shoulder. Caitlin just stayed absolutely still, not sure what to do or what to say. Slowly he raised his head looking down at her face, “Why . . .why would you turn on me like that so quickly. I was under the impression that we had come so far in just a few moments time, everything had gotten so much better and felt so wonderful. It became what I dreamed of from the first day I laid eyes on you. Do you really want me dead, so that you can be free of me? . . .”
“No . . . . of course I don’t, James.” She whispered, her heart clinching in her chest at the sight of pain in his eyes. She was trying to be sincere, but at the same time trying to breathe past the fumes of alcohol emanating from his body. He’d had so much to drink, she wasn’t sure how he could remain standing much less form words. Taking a deep breath she tried to think of anything else she could say to ease his mind. “James, we are married. I accepted that quite sometime ago. I know . . . I know I’ll learn to love you in time . . .” He lowered his head to rest against her shoulder as if trying to stay awake. “ . . . and when your ready to start . . . . well . . . when . . . we start a family I promise to be a good mother, and take care of you and our children.” She whispered.
Aurora had heard James when he came from his Cabin, and flew down from her secret hiding place following after him curious as to what she would see. She watched anxiously as her hopes were put on a roller coaster ride through the entire conversation between the two. She had to cover her mouth to suppress the giggle of pure glee when she saw him hit the human so hard she cried out in pain. Finally, she thought he’d had enough of this girl and was going to rid himself of her. Once again her face and heart fell when his emotions changed suddenly and he turned back into that whimpering puppy dog state he’d fallen into since they returned. When she heard Caitlin’s words her wings flew up, and she quickly whispered words into the air before blowing them into James ear. Awaking his memory of the discovery he’d made in Caitlin’s journal. Fluttering closer to watch and see what would happen now with baited breath.
Suddenly, James started to laugh dryly. As you think one might do when it is realized that a cruel irony had just played out before them. “There will be no children.” He said, his anger towards what had happened and liquor clouding his judgment and his sense wanting to hurt someone, so they would suffer as much as he had been suffering.
Caitlin’s breath caught in her throat at his words. “What . . .” She whispered, her eyes looking about not knowing quite what he meant by that. “ . . . you don’t . . . . want them?” She asked feeling a pain in her chest emerge again at this.
Hook slowly lifted his head looking down into her eyes, “I can not say that I have ever desired offspring. Even if I had . . . you could never give them to me.” Caitlin’s eyes just stared up at him, as if her mind was doing it’s best to block out what it knew had been hidden from her since she’d come to this place. Leaning down next to her ear he whispered, “In your deigning to offer me all the duties expected of ones wife, it seems you have forgotten, my benevolent bride. You are . . . egregiously, barren and can never have chil . . . .” A loud noise filled the room muffling the sounds of his last few words, when suddenly his eyes rolled back in his head and he fell to the side. He hung against the wall next to Caitlin, having left his hook stuck into the timbers if the wall.
Caitlin looked up her eyes wide seeing Smee standing behind the Captain with what looked like part of the ship that the tie lines where usually fastened with. Her eyes fluttered slightly as she looked down at James before looking back up at Smee. “What . . . why did you do that?” She whispered breathlessly.
Aurora flew up into the air her little fists clinched in rage as she smacked them down hard against her thighs looking at Smee. Taking a deep breath and grinding her teeth, her pale skin turned a crimson color and her eyes turned black, shaking with pure and utter anger and hatred. She was so close, and this idiot old man ruined it for her.
Smee reached up removing James hook from the wall catching him and laying him on the floor next to Caitlin’s feet. “He would have just regretted all of this come sunrise misses.” Reaching up he unhooked the restraints that Caitlin was bound by, before moving up and taking off the Irons she wore around her wrists as well. She gasped slightly having been hanging up for more then 17 hours. Kneeling down next to James she looked at his eyes, tears filling her own. She didn’t understand any of what had just happened.
Smee finished putting the key back where it went and closing the restraints back before kneeling on the other side of the Captain. He saw the look in Caitlin’s eyes and chuckled, “Don’t worry about him misses. He’s not hurt, he’ll wake up tomorrow as good as new, you’ll see. He won’t even remember coming down here.” Caitlin frowned looking up at him, as he moved to pick Hook up off the floor wrapping the Captains arm around his neck. By this time, Hook was completely out of it, he moved completely involuntarily as he stood to his feet with a groan.
Caitlin rose as well holding his other arm as she helped him stand. Her mind still trying to sort out what he had said to her and why he would have said such a thing. “Come on, I’m sure your tired and ready for a good nights rest, we’ll get the Captain settled in and you can rest.” Caitlin paused a moment and shook her head taking a step back. “I’ll stay down here . . . for the night, thank you.” She moved towards the cell door and opened it walking inside and closing the door behind, before moving to the bunk laying down.
Smee just looked at her for a moment, “Will you be wanting anything Misses?” He asked looking at her through the bars. Caitlin just stayed silent lost in her own thoughts. This was completely strange, he never in all his years could remember of ANYONE who actually preferred to stay in the brig. The bed was uncomfortable, the entire hold was very cold and drafty and most times even damp. It was meant as a punishment, as she should have well remembered from the days she spent in it before. But she was pig headed, and determined and since she was the Captain’s wife, she did outrank him to a degree. Smee just sighed turning and leaving her alone, wrapping the Captain’s arm around his neck readjusting the Captain’s weight as he started up the stairs. It seemed that was how she wanted to be left for the rest of the night.
Aurora stayed for another moment, looking at Caitlin as she willingly locked herself away in the brig that was reserved for prisoners of all kinds. She snorted and spit at her before fluttering after Smee, wanting to stay in the cabin with Hook since he’d be spending the night alone tonight. Just like it was when they were alone together in the mortal world.
The next afternoon, James suffered a rude awakening when he shifted his weight the wrong way, calling off the edge of the bed. He hit the ground with a loud, hard ‘Thud!’ just barely missing hitting his head on the bedside table. He groaned loudly laying on his back, spread out on the floor. He had no desire to breathe much less breathe. Slowly his eyes opened, looking towards the ceiling of his Cabin. It felt as if his head was splitting all the way down his spine. Suddenly a face appeared above his eyes, “Good afternoon Capt’n!” The face said cheerfully. Hook’s eyes rolled back and closed, a look of disgust and annoyance crossing his face.
“I seem to recall being wedded to a Goddess, who even on her worst days, still looks as beautiful as ever. That is the image I wish to see and expect to wake up to. Not your withered old face and your gray speckled beard.” His first mate reached down helping him to rise from the floor to his feet. James balance was seriously a rye and he started to sway. Smee turned catching him pushing him back to his feet a moment, realizing it wouldn’t do much good to steady him at this point. Moving quickly, Smee helped his Captain to sit back down on the bed.
“Just take it slow Capt’n. I’ll get ye something to take the edge off that dreadful headache. Don’t you fret.” Smee turned and started off to the other part of the cabin, but Hook reached up catching him with his good hand, jerking him down to eye level. His bloodshot eyes looked at Smee, and his breath was just as toxic as ever.
“There is no need to shout Smee. Silence your loud tongue, or I shall cut it from your jaw and hang it as a decoration on the mast.” He pushed Smee away roughly nearly throwing him to the floor, the little old man scrambled to his feet and went about his task. James just sat there a moment, before closing his eyes and raising his hand to his head. Drinking to that sort of extent was not something he did often. He was now reminded exactly why.
Smee stood over next to the medication cabinet mixing together a concoction that was known to calm the stomach and stop the knocking in ones head after a night of indulging in spirits. He dropped one of the bottles and quickly bent down to retrieve it. While he wasn’t looking, a small purple flash of light stopped over the goblet Smee was mixing ingredients in, putting in a few of her own and flew away just before the first mate returned to his duty.
James tried to remember what happened the night before, but found it a complete and total blur. Uncertain if the few tidbits he did remember where real or part of some horrible nightmare. He continued to rub his eyes and temples for several moments, before he found a goblet with a familiar scent being held under his face. Reaching up he took it, taking a large drink from it. His mouth and throat where dry and felt as if a bundle of cotton had somehow been pushed down it. Yet as soon as the liquid touched his parched lips, the burning and aching sensation disappeared and he was beginning to feel better already.
“What on earth is this Smee.” He questioned finishing the rest of it, as the red of his eyes disappeared and cleared completely. The headache he had suffered seem to melt away and release him as well.
“Just your soda I mix for ye to help with ye spirit headaches capt’n. The same I’ve always mixed for ye.” Hook shook his head standing as strong and clear headed as ever looking at the glass.
“You did something differently this time.” Handing him the goblet, James moved away from the bed and began to wash up feeling the need for a bath. Smee put the glass down picking up the Captain’s harness and following after him quickly. Half way through helping the Captain dress for the day, James stopped and looked squarely at his first mate. “What the devil are you doing here?”
Smee looked around before looking back up at Hook, “I’m helping ye dress Capt’n. Like I’ve always done.” Pushing Smee’s hand away, James finished buttoning up his vest quickly walking back around to where he slept.
“What is going on here, where is Caitlin?” Turning and looking at Smee a moment, his eyes narrowed. Smee recognized the look in Hook’s eyes and quickly started backing away when he saw the Captain moving towards him. “I would not tell me, that she was left in the brig the entire course of the night if I where you! I told you to let her go at nightfall!”
Smee’s eyes went wide as he shook his head, “No . . . no Capt’n you never told me that.” James raised his Hook reaching out catching the collar of Smee’s shirt jerking him towards him nearly lifting him off the ground. “BUT. . . but I did let her free . . . I removed her irons and let her free!!”
“If that where true then she would be here with me!” His eyes narrowed as his began to grow angry. He shoved him hard against the wall, “If you are lying to me I’ll . . .”
“No Capt’n I’d never lie to you! I did let her go, but she didn’t want to come to the Cabin. She made me leave her in the brig and lock the cell door!. . . honest Capt’n I wouldn’t lie to you! I said . . .to me self, as soon as I saw you leave the brig last night, I said . . . . ” He said quickly, but Hook cut off his words.
“I left the brig? . . . . I was never in the b . . .” James stopped cold as he turned his head away from Smee his eyes going wide, “Dear God what have I done.” He released his terrified first mate, and hurried out of the cabin heading down to where he’d sent Caitlin to stay the day before.
Quickly he made his way below decks. All the while he noticed the abnormal way he was feeling, normally after a night of heavy drinking anyone who dared to cross his path was soon made a memory. He felt awake, well rested, and truthfully better then had had felt physically for some time. It was odd to say the least. He came to a stop at the bottom of the stairs and looked around before he spotted Caitlin lying on a bunk in one of the cells. Slowly he walked towards the bars looking in at her. He couldn’t remember for the life of him what had transpired between them the night before, and cursed himself for falling prey to his own natures. “Caitlin?” He questioned silently, not knowing if she was awake yet.
James opened the door and stepped inside, “I awoke just a short while ago, to the most ghastly old sour face, with a very moth eaten gray beard. It was the most vile thing to open my eyes to when I expected to see an angel by my side as I had only a few nights ago.” Finally he saw movement, as Caitlin moved to sit up on the edge of the bunk. However her eyes would not cast in his direction. They were towards the floor and shifted to one side remaining there. It was almost as if she were afraid of him, or if something he’d done hurt her beyond repair. Carefully he moved closer to her kneeling before her, looking to her eyes. Reaching up with his hook, he swept her hair back off her shoulders. “Why did you not come to our cabin once Smee set you free of your binds?” His voice was fair more gentle then it was last night, it was as if he was back to the caring man that had stolen her away to a diamond-lined cavern.
James found a lump in his throat as she still would not look at him, he swallowed as his hand moved to take one of hers, running his thumb over the back of her hand and knuckles. “Caitlin . . . One says many things, that should not be uttered under any circumstances, when they have indulged in more then their fair share of strong spirits. . . I may have said many things to you last night, that should not have been said and I did not mean. It does not mean that I care for you any less, nor does it excuse any sort of behavior that I might have . . . good lord.” Letting go of her hand he moved up touching the side of her face. She flinched pulling her head back away from the touch. There was a slight bruise surfacing on her lower cheek, it looked deep and the blue and black color was showing through her skin just enough for one to see if they looked closely.
“Did . . . I do this to you?” He whispered in horror at the thought of striking her in the face so hard as to damage her skin. Caitlin took a deep breath, not wanting him to feel badly or berate himself for something he apparently did not intend to happen between them.
“No . . . no, I found it when I woke up . . . it formed before you came down and . . . spoke with me.” She whispered, her eyes still turned away. Hook’s gaze remained on the bruise as she spoke. Her voice betrayed her and showed that she was lying to him about what he had done. He could now see that she was back to as she had been the night before she disappeared into the deep forests of Neverland. Lifting himself to sit next to her on the bunk he pulled her into his arms holding her close. She resisted for only a moment before melting into his arms burying her face in his chest crying softly. He ran his good hand over her hair a few times trying to comfort her.
“Someone . . . or something is playing with us Caitlin.” He whispered to her holding her close. “I can not believe, that you willingly intended to attack me as you did. You did not even speak to me, you just struck repeatedly trying to finish what Pan had started years ago.” She looked up at him tears in her eyes, and a lump in her throat.
“James I’m sorry, I honestly don’t remember. I really don’t. But I swear to you, on everything I hold dear, I would never ever try to harm you in such a way. I swear it.” She repeated over and over again before James guided her face back to his chest holding her tight pulling her more against him.
“It is this place my dear. This place will try to turn us against each other, but we must fight it and be aware of it each day. Or we shall surely fall prey to it is soul twisting mind games.” Carefully he moved to turn her face up towards him, and lightly ran two fingers over the wound she suffered. Her eyes looked towards his filled with tears that ran down her cheeks. A moment passed before James began to kiss her tears away, much in the same manner the night they’d spent together on the island letting her know that nothing had changed.
