Liam spent a lot of time at La Push over the next few weeks. Billy and Sam spent most of that time giving him the third degree. To Jacob’s delight, Liam seemed to be passing their tests. One afternoon Liam made lunch for everyone to show off his cooking skills.
Jacob tensed when he saw the look Billy and Sam exchanged. Liam laughed bitterly because he already knew what they were going to ask. “So, you really want to know what makes us different.”
“Dad, he doesn’t like to talk about it,” Jacob protested.
“But if he wants us to trust him, he’ll have to tell us,” Billy insisted. “We’ve been entertaining this for the past five weeks. It’s time to get down to business.”
“It’s all right,” Liam assured his mate. “To understand us, you must first understand vampirism, period. It’s a curse. Living forever sounds great, but as I have explained to Bella, there’s quite a bit you have to give up. When you’re first changed it’s like a demon has been unleashed inside you. The thirst is indescribable. Generally, those who are changed just accept that they are soulless monsters, and so that is what they become.”
“But you and your brother magically got over that?” Sam raised an eyebrow skeptically.
Liam chuckled softly. “I wouldn’t exactly put it that way. My brother has been changed, but his caring and compassionate nature was too strong to ever be ruined by a curse. After he gave up on killing himself, he decided to make the best of things and held onto his humanity as best he could.”
“And you?” Billy asked.
Liam smirked evilly. “I, sir, am the most stubborn creature on the face of the planet. At least that’s what my brother tells me. I refused to give in to it from the very beginning. I don’t know how long it took me to change, but in the end Carlisle couldn’t stand to watch me suffer any longer. He smothered me with a pillow. I don’t consider that losing the fight though; I consider it a forfeit due to circumstances beyond my control.”
“Is that why your eyes are green?” Jacob asked. “They were prettier when they were blue.”
“It could be. Such a thing has never happened before, so we don’t know what the cause is. However, I was determined from the start for a vampire to be what I was, never who I was.”
“And the others?” Billy asked, referring to the rest of the Cullen family.
“We taught them they didn’t have to be monsters. The uncontrollable thirst only lasts so long, and after that you can regain who you once were. All it takes is a little patience, and my brother seems to have a never-ending supply of that.”
“I have just one more question, then,” Billy said. “If there was a way you could become human again, would you do it to be with Jacob?”
The room went completely silent as they waited for Liam’s answer. “That’s a difficult decision, and not for the reasons you might think. My brother and I are very close. Becoming mortal again would mean he’d have to watch me grow old and die. I know how that feels, so I wouldn’t want to do that to him. That, and it would make it difficult for the rest of my adopted family to be around me. I care for them too, but this is the first and last time you’ll ever hear me admit it.”
Jacob gave Liam a strange look. “Is it actually possible?”
“Maybe,” Liam shrugged. “Do you remember me telling you about the Blood Rose?”
Jacob nodded. “You said it was poisonous to vampires.”
“The sap is, yes. Supposedly the petals can be used to make a brew that will cleanse the drinker of the vampire curse. Of course, the drinker has to want to be rid of it….”
“Supposedly?” Sam shifted a little in his seat.
Liam nodded. “It’s more druid lore. I once read that shortly after Father Arridor discovered that the Blood Rose could be used to kill vampires, he met one named Cassian who was different from the rest. They fell in love, and Cassian decided he didn’t want to be immortal any more. Father Arridor created the brew, and it worked. They were married and lived quite happily until Father Arridor died.”
“Where did you read this?” Jacob asked curiously. Liam could hear his heart pounding in his chest with excitement.
“Father Arridor’s memoires. Every high druid kept them, and they were all kept in a secret room. I found it one day while exploring.”
Jacob was becoming more excited by the minute. “So you could actually become human?” Jacob knew things would be so much easier if Liam were human.
“If I could still find the recipe, and if it actually works.”
“Will you try?”
The two of them stared at each other for several minutes. “I’ll consider it,” Liam answered. “But right now is really not a good time. Have you read the paper lately?”
Billy nodded. “It’s getting worse. Didn’t you say there were others who dealt with this kind of thing?”
“The Volturi.” Liam nodded. “It’s kind of odd that they haven’t even investigated. And on that note, I should probably go home.” He gave Jacob a quick kiss on the cheek. “Oh, I almost forgot. Alice is throwing a graduation party, and you and your friends are invited.”
“I’ll come, but I don’t know about the guys,” Jacob answered. “I’ll talk to them about it. Does Bella know?”
“Not yet.” Liam smirked.
“I don’t envy Edward.”
Liam laughed and headed out the door. He didn’t envy his nephew either. Bella didn’t like parties much, and she wouldn’t be pleased to hear about the graduation party. But Alice really wanted to do it, and it was hard to sway her from doing something once she made up her mind.
The Cullens too, wondered why the Volturi hadn’t done anything about the mess. No one had put two and two together quite yet, but the epidemic in Seattle was undeniably a large-scale exposure risk. The only reason they could think of was that the Volturi were sticking to their promise to leave the Cullens alone, and because of who was behind it all it was a personal problem.
The entire family was gathered in front of the TV, watching the latest news report, when Liam returned. “Alice see anything?” he asked.
“No,” Alice frowned. “Nothing from Aro, either.”
“We have to do something,” Carlisle sighed. He’d didn’t really want to get involved, but if Victoria was indeed behind this, then they were all in danger.
“And what exactly do you propose we do?” Liam asked. “It’s a big city, and we know next to nothing about what’s going on. From a purely tactical perspective, rushing off to Seattle doesn’t seem like the best idea.”
“Liam is right—we don’t know how many there are, or who is leading them, if anyone,” Jasper added.
“We can’t exactly sit here and do nothing!” Carlisle snapped in frustration.
Liam put his arm around his brother’s shoulders. “We’ll be fine. I think the best thing to do is stay right where we are. We have the advantage because they don’t know we know about them. And newborns are incredibly unorganized and unruly anyway.”
“You have no idea,” Jasper snorted.
“See, it’s all good.” Liam smiled. “Alice, how are the party plans coming along?”
Alice’s face seem to lighten up a bit at mention of the party. “All I really need to do now is send out the invitations. Want to help me?”
“Sure, I have a few hours I need to kill,” Liam answered and followed Alice to her room.
