(Two weeks later after the concert)
Chris walked into a room. He smiled softly when he saw his father standing by a fireplace. Damian looked up and smiled at his son.
“It’s good to see you again son.” Damian said. Chris chuckled lightly.
“It’s good to see you again father.” Chris responded holding on to a leash a little tighter. The white wolf hybrid looked at Damian. Damian led Chris to a chair and helped his son sit down. “I’m not helpless father. I do have partial sight in one eye, and I have Wulf here.”
Chris stroked the wolf’s ears. Damian blinked and looked at the wolf.
“You named your seeing eye dog after your uncle?”
Chris chuckled lightly and shook his head.
“No the person I got him from six years ago named him. He’s been the best for me. Well Wulf and Inca both.”
Wulf walked up to Damian and laid his huge head in the vampire’s lap. Without realizing it Damian began to rub the wolf’s ears. “He seems to like you.”
“Most animals try to avoid me because of what I am.”
“He seems fine around night creatures. Then again with who I got him from…”
“Who did you get him from?”
“The lady Raven. I was in Seattle for a little while about six years ago. Raven wasn’t impressed with the seeing eye dog I had at the time, and gave me Wulf. She said he’d be the best for me. I didn’t understand until three years ago, when a fan tried to kill me. Wulf took the person’s arm clean off and then went for the throat.”
“How have you been son?”
“Can’t complain. I’ve been busy with work.”
Damian nodded his head, and he gently rubbed a strand of his long red hair. “Why are you rubbing hair like that?”
Damian blinked, and dropped the strand of hair.
“I didn’t realize I was doing that. It’s a nervous habit. I do it when I worry. I’ve been worrying a lot lately.”
“You don’t have to worry about me. I’ve learned to adapt to my condition. When I need blood Wulf brings home a rabbit or something for me.”
“You don’t hunt humans?”
“With my eyesight? Dad the only way I could get human blood would be through a blood bank. How have Izayoi, Kit, Jeff, and Keri been?”
“They are doing all right. Will you be visiting them?”
Chris stood up and walked towards a window. He removed the dark glasses.
“No I won’t be visiting them.”
“Why not? They were an extended family to you.”
Chris looked out the window and sighed.
“I made a promise a long time ago.” Chris said. “I will not go anywhere where I am not wanted. Miroku didn’t want me anywhere near his family, so I stayed away, and I shall continue to do so.”
“You’re going to let the actions of one little fox to destroy your other friendships?”
Chris spun and faced his father. For the first time in ten years Damian saw the scars that crossed his son’s face.
“These are part of the reason why I won’t go see them. Take a good long look at my face father.”
“The scars came from you not paying attention to the road son.” Damian said as he began to rub the wolf’s ears. Chris shook his head.
“I’ll admit I took the curve to fast father, but it’s kind of hard to see with tears in one’s eyes.”
Chris heard the doorknob turning and quickly put his glasses back on. He tensed up when he saw the family of kitsune enter the room.
“Thanks Jean-Claude.” Keri said. She looked up at Chris. “Long time no see Chris.”
Chris smiled a tight smile and bowed politely.
“That it has been Keri. You’ve grown up.” Chris replied. Miroku stalked into the room and flopped down on a chair.
“Why you no write or call? Kit-chan has to talk to Damian.” Izayoi said moving to give Chris a hug. Wulf stood up and placed himself between Chris and the kitsune. A low growl rumbled in his throat. Izayoi looked at the wolf and blinked.
“Wulf stand down.” Chris said softly. “It’s been nice seeing you again father but I have to get going otherwise Inca and Sam will worry about me.”
Chris grabbed a hold of the harness on the wolf and walked towards the door.
“Oh sure run away like you always do.” Miroku sneered. Chris stiffened and faced Miroku.
“I do not run fox. I know how to pick my battles.”
“So you fucking two people now?”
Chris tightened his grip on Wulf, who had started growling.
“Miroku!” Kit snapped. “Mind your manners.”
Chris walked up to Miroku, and glared down. “Chris?”
Without warning Chris struck out. The back of his fist hit Miroku’s cheek with a sickening crack. The kitsune flew from the chair and hit the wall.
“I knew it was a mistake staying here.” Chris said. “I’ve got to go.”
Chris let Wulf lead him out the door. Kit raced to her fallen son, and checked his pulse. Izayoi looked at his son and sighed.
