Day Two
Chloe felt like shit, for lack of better word. Her cheeks were sore, her eyes
were sore, hell everything was sore. She looked in the mirror. It wasn’t a
pretty sight. Even if she had makeup with her, no amount of foundation could
cover up the dark circles around her eyes. It was obvious that she spent the
entire night crying. As if Lex hadn’t heard her last night, which was
impossible since she knew that he had perfect hearing, her face clearly gave it
away. “Screw it.” She didn’t care. Why should she care? Chloe was tired of
hiding her emotions, especially from him. It was far too tiring. Besides, if
she didn’t start letting a little bit of herself show through, she was going to
have an ulcer from the constant worrying of possibly letting herself slip
through.
Chloe paused for a moment by the bedroom door. All the lack of caring was a
bunch of crap and she knew it. She did care, no matter how tough she tried to
act, she did care. There was no way of getting around it. It was like someone
saying that they have four legs when they only have two. Everyone knows that
they have two legs, so there was no way to be convinced otherwise. That was her
case. Lex knew that she cared; she knew that she cared, and there was no way to
get around it.
She couldn’t stay in the bedroom forever, though. Chloe remembered that she had
a dinner to attend to later that night. Nothing was going to stop her from
attending a nice, evening dinner with a bunch of vampires. It would make a
great story. Plus, not to mention the great eye candy that is Asher. Chloe was
starting to feel better, now. Screw Lex and screw his damn feelings for Lana.
There was Asher. Wait! She didn’t know anything about him. She didn’t even know
if he was single. Do vampires even have girlfriends? That was something she was
going to have to look up. Lex surely has a computer somewhere here in the
penthouse. She could do some research on Jean-Claude and Asher before the
dinner; find out everything she needs to know about the two of them.
Yes, she was quite pleased with herself. She already had a plan of objectives
for the day, and ready to get down in dirty in reporter mode. Chloe was feeling
damn good, now. She was feeling spiffy. Okay, maybe not spiffy, but pretty damn
close.
Chloe was out the door, ready to enter the living room before a large white box
sitting on the dining room table had caught her eye. She paused to look at it.
The curiosity in her wondered what was inside. If she was a cat she would have
been dead a long, long time ago. With that thought she decided to have a closer
look at it. There was note on top of it addressed to her. Since it was
addressed to her, she figured it was okay to open it. She picked up the note
and began to read it, “For the dinner tonight. Lex.” So the box was from Lex,
probably trying to make up for last night. Ha, it wasn’t going to work. Then
again, she didn’t know what was in the box.
She poked her head into the living room. Lex was still asleep on the couch,
tangled in one of the purple sheets from the bed. Chloe remembered stripping
the sheet off of the bed last night and throwing it at him before going
straight back into the room. No words were exchanged, just dirty looks from her
part. She went from happy to sad to mad to depressed in one night. She didn’t
need to have to be a therapist to know that wasn’t particularly a good thing.
A few grunted noises paused her thought. She looked at Lex, who was changing
positions on the couch more than a politician flip-flops his views during a
debate. Despite him obviously being uncomfortable, he was still sexy as hell.
His tight abs peeked their way under his raised shirt. His arm was covering his
face so she couldn’t see his eyes, those lips with the sexy scar. It allowed
her to take in the sight of his wrinkled shirt and pants. She’d never seen his
clothing look anything but perfect. She began to think that nothing could
wrinkle his clothes, as though they were better than everyone else's and were
completely immune to wrinkles. She was wrong and they made him look even
sexier. She was liking him again. What the hell was wrong with her? Just a few
seconds ago she could care less about him. She wanted to see him rot in hell,
but now with one look at him sleeping she’s ready to jump his bones. She let
out a heavy sigh, wondering why her. Why her?
“There is a gift for you on the dining room table. But you already knew that,
didn’t you?” Lex startled her with his voice. How long had he been awake? Had
he been awake the entire time? Did he see her staring at him like the stupid,
confused woman that she was? Damn him!
She let out a huff, yes childish but she didn’t care, and went back into the
dining room. The white box was still sitting there, she didn’t expect for it to
not be. Instead of raising her curiosity like it had earlier it fueled her
anger. Chloe didn’t bother picking up the note and setting it aside, she let it
fall onto the floor as she picked the box up. The top was somewhat difficult
for her to get off, as if it was designed to be opened slowly so it would
further the hopeless girl’s anticipation. Romance! Who needed that? It was
nothing but lies, anyway. There was no such thing as romance. It was just
something that a bunch of writers decided to make up to brainwash girls at an
early age into dreaming up this fantasy world that didn’t exist and would never
exist. The fantasies just ended up biting everyone in the ass in the long run.
“Why won’t this damn lid come off?” Chloe resorted to shaking it, only to be
stopped by a gently placed hand on hers.
Lex looked as bad as she did, except he made it look sexy instead of pathetic
like her. She hated him. Yes, that’s right, she hated him. Why the hell was he
so damn sexy? “Let me.” Chloe childishly shoved the box in his arms. She pulled
out a chair and wrapped her arms around her. At least she didn’t pout, she
might have huffed, but she didn’t pout.
She watched as Lex opened the box within a second, expertly cutting the tape
that taped the box shut with his fingers. “I knew it was taped.” It might have
sounded ridiculous and total bullshit, but she didn’t care. She took the box
back and tried to uncover whatever it was that was inside underneath all the
tissue paper. She was beginning to think that it was tissue paper. Lex would
just love that, wrap her up in tissue paper and have her go to dinner wearing
only that. Wait that would be her fantasy actually. A bright, red dress was
revealed underneath. Chloe picked it up by the ribbon that was used as straps
with her fingers so she could see it better. Attached to the ribbon was a
beautifully, gold embroidered corset, with ribbon crisscrossing in the front.
The skirt of the dress was tight and looked to fit her around her knee. It
looked small, but fitting and comfortable at the same time. She noticed that
there was a crocheted scarf of the same color left in the box, to cover up the
tops of her tidbits if she wanted to. “Red?” The dress was absolutely
beautiful, but she didn’t want Lex to know that she thought that.
“The color is most flattering on you.” The statement made her blush a little.
She silently cursed him and thanked him at the same time. Chloe was still stuck
in between hating him and loving him at the same time. God, she was pathetic.
“How did you know my size? Don’t tell me that you called my dad or someone.” He
didn’t answer. “You didn’t sneak in the bedroom last night and look at the tags
on my clothing did you?”
“I estimated.” Lex was masking his face again.
Chloe shrugged, “It probably won’t fit.” She knew that it would fit; she just
didn’t want him to know that. Sure, it would be a little constricting, but what
corset wasn’t, though?
“I’m sure it will,” Lex replied as though he knew that it was a perfect fit.
Chloe hated him for that. “I scheduled an appointment for you with the hotel
masseuse today before the dinner. You are… stressed right now. Maybe she can
help you relax a little.”
Chloe didn’t know what to say. She didn’t expect to be pampered with a massage.
It was clear that Lex was trying to make up for last night, though. Well, she
wasn’t going to get over it that easily, it just wasn’t possible. For all she
cared he could take the appointment and shove it up his ass. Then again, she’d
never been given a professional massage before either. Maybe it wouldn’t be
that bad after all.
What about make up and her hair, though? Her girly mode automatically kicked
into full force. She hated to admit it, but she was actually worried about her
appearance at dinner tonight. She didn’t want to be looked as a disappointment
for Lex, even though they weren’t together and the dinner was far from a date.
She still wanted to look okay. And Asher, she knew that she could never amount
to the looks of Asher, but she should at least try, right? “Makeup.” Lex was
thinking about something, looking to be in a complete daze out in the middle of
nowhere. Chloe brought him back to the present. “I need makeup; I don’t have
any with me. And my hair, what am I going to do about my hair?”
Lex let out a chuckle and it made Chloe’s body clench in the unmentionable
places despite her wishes. “I think the way you normally style your hair will
be fine. Makeup? You don’t need it.”
“This is an important dinner; I can’t show up with out makeup on. That is just…
wrong.” Chloe didn’t wear makeup near as much as other women, but she still
knew when it was needed. Tonight it was needed.
“You look beautiful without it.” Lex was looking into her eyes now, he still
had his mask in place, but she knew that he was studying her. She could feel
the shivers go up and down her sides, causing her to fidget underneath his
glorious stare.
“I need some lipstick, at least.” Her voice came off as sounding breathy and
hesitant. It didn’t sound like her at all. She was surprised that she managed
to say anything at all while she continued to be the object of Lex’s undivided
attention for the moment.
“I’ll see what I can do.” Lex continued to look at her for another few moments.
The silence was awkward before Chloe decided to pretend as though she wasn’t
noticing his gaze. He then headed back into the living room, grabbing the
newspaper that had ended up on the desk in the corner. “The masseuse should be
arriving in an hour.” He was then out of her sight, and she let out a breath
she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
It took Chloe an entire lifetime to change into the dress. The dress fit
perfectly, but the corset was a pain to tighten by herself. She'd asked the
masseuse to stay a little longer to help her tighten the corset. The girl
shrieked and giggled when she saw the dress. "Lex Luthor bought this for
you? Wow, you're so lucky!" She kept rubbing her hands over the material.
Chloe couldn't blame her really, it was really nice material. "Do you have
any idea how much this dress cost?"
"What, a hundred dollars or something?" Chloe didn't think about the
cost of the dress until now. It was a nice dress, something she knew that she
couldn't afford.
"You're joking, right?" The masseuse gave her the "girl you are
so naïve" look. Chloe shook her head, she wasn't joking. "Girl, this
is an original. Last time I checked, this cost around a thousand dollars. Since
it was custom fitted, though, the designer probably charged more."
"More than a thousand dollars? For this thing?" Chloe couldn't hide
her shock. She looked into the mirror, admiring the dress and the way she
looked in it. It was a nice dress. But a thousand dollars?
"You did have a fitting, right? This dress was made to fit you." The
girl was tightening the corset some more, even though it was already tight
enough in Chloe's opinion. The tighter the corset got, the more her breast
wanted to plunge out from the top.
"No. I saw it for the first time this morning." The masseuse gave her
another look. Chloe held on to the vanity instead to balance herself for each
tightened pull of the corset.
"Are you two lovers?" The question came out of nowhere, causing Chloe
to lose balance and fall to the ground.
"What? That's none of your business." Chloe tried to get up with as
much dignity as possible, but the tight skirt and corset wouldn't allow it. She
grabbed for the vanity, but it didn't work. The masseuse held out her hand for
help. Chloe didn't want her help now, not if she was going to ask private
questions such as the one she'd just asked. Then again, Chloe would have done
the same thing. "No, we're not lovers. Why do you ask?" Chloe took
the offered hand and stood up. Nothing was ripped, thank God.
"Well, either Mr. Luthor hired the designer to measure you without your
knowledge, or he memorized every inch of your body. The hopeless romantic in me
would like to think that it's the latter." She smiled and the statement
caused Chloe to blush a little. "Are you sure you two are not
lovers?"
"Positive," Chloe still couldn't help the blush, however. She knew
that the masseuse noticed it; she was looking directly at Chloe in the mirror.
She still had the "you're lying" smile on her face. It wasn't a lie,
though. They weren't lovers, and frankly no matter how nice it sounded; Chloe
couldn't picture them as such. There was too much history between them, and
last night didn't really help either. But, still the masseuse had a point about
the dress. It fit her perfectly, like it was made just for her. Chloe knew that
Lex hadn't hired some seamstress to measure her, even without her knowing. The
idea of him memorizing every inch of her may have sounded romantic, but Chloe
knew that wasn't the case. Maybe if it was Lana and not her, then it would have
been true. Still, how did Lex know her size? All he said to her when she had
asked him earlier was that he had guessed. Chloe knew that wasn't true. Or was
it? It didn't matter, because Chloe didn't care. At least that was what she was
trying to tell herself all the time.
"Okay, I think it's tight enough. Can you breathe?" She looked at
Chloe, who nodded her head. "Well, my job here is done." She started
heading for the door and then she quickly turned around. The smile on her face
was devious and sinister looking. "Did you enjoy your massage today?"
Chloe gave her a polite smile, "Of course, it was wonderful."
"Well, how would you like for me to give you a massage from now, everyday,
free of charge?"
Chloe could feel her face light up; she didn't need to look in the mirror to
make sure. Then again, there was a catch, she could tell by just looking at the
girl. "What is the catch?"
"You have to sleep with Mr. Luthor."
"What? No way!" The idea of sleeping with Lex was truly absurd. Okay,
maybe it wasn't and yes she has thought about it several times. The thing about
sleeping with someone else, though, is that other person has to want to have
sex with you back.
"Girl!" The masseuse started exaggeratingly throwing her hands up in
the air, as if Chloe just committed the crime of the century, in girl terms
that is. "What the hell is wrong with you? Sexy, billionaire Luthor buys
you these gorgeous leather boots, lets you sleep in his bedroom while he sleeps
on the couch, and then buys you this killer-knockout dress for one dinner
tonight, which fits you like a glove. The man obviously knows your body very
well, and he's buying you expensive things. He's in love with you!"
"What?!" Chloe shook her head for emphasis. "You're crazy."
"I've been working at this hotel for five years, and over those years I
have noticed things. The man doesn't regard you as his whore, obviously. If he
did, then he wouldn't be sleeping on the couch and he wouldn't be buying you
all these nice things. He doesn't treat you like just another bimbo debutante,
much for the same explanation as the sleeping situation is concerned. He respects
you…" The doorbell to the penthouse rang, interrupting the happy, romantic
masseuse from her speech. Chloe was never so happy to have another visitor in
her life. She didn't want to carry on with the conversation any further than
what was needed. "I'll get it, you just start putting on your
makeup."
Chloe watched as the other woman left the bathroom. Then she turned around to
look at herself in the mirror. The dress? The shoes? The bedroom? The fact that
he was still letting her stay here at all? What the hell did it all mean? Lex
wouldn't let just any old friend hang around with him as he held important
business meetings. He certainly wouldn't buy just any friend a thousand dollar
dress that was only meant to be worn for one night. Chloe was confused and she
hated the feeling. She remembered feeling this way during those three months of
hiding. The little things that Lex had done for her, that ended up making her
forget the whole situation of her possible death. Then Clark and her cousin
found her, and there was no longer a need to be in hiding. Ever since then, her
and Lex hadn't spent much time together, actually zero time together. They
occasionally bumped into one another at the Talon and he would immediately come
up with some excuse to leave. She figured that he hated her. Why? She didn't
know, but it still hurt all the same.
"This came for you." The girl handed her a white box, shaped like a
shoebox. "Are you only going to wear lipstick?"
"Lex said that was all I needed, that I didn't need makeup." Chloe
shrugged at the questioning look on the other's face. Instead of getting into
yet another conversation with her, she decided to go straight to opening up the
box. There was a note inside addressed to her from Lex. She handed it to the
masseuse to read. Chloe didn't know why she had handed it to her, but she did.
Chloe moved the tissue paper to the side so she could see what was inside. It
was a pair of red shoes, the same shade as her dress, with spiked heels.
"Those look expensive." Chloe looked at the masseuse and nodded her
head. She knew her mouth was open, she knew that she looked shocked, and she
couldn't do anything about it. Chloe couldn't even talk at the moment, let
alone control her facial expressions. "He tells you that you don't need
makeup. Then he buys you knock-out shoes to go with your knock-out dress, which
look to cost at least half or more of what the dress cost. No, he's not in love
with you. Nope."
Chloe let out a sigh and looked back at the masseuse who was heading out of the
door. "Where are you going?"
"My shift is over. Besides, isn't Mr. Sex-Stud supposed to be back in
fifteen minutes?" Chloe looked at the clock on the vanity. Oh Shit! She
wasn't finished getting ready! "Exactly. Hey, before I go, I just want to
tell you to enjoy yourself tonight."
Chloe smiled, completely surprised by the kind words that were offered by this,
well, almost complete stranger. "Thank you."
"And remember, have sex with him." Before Chloe could protest the
masseuse was out the door.
Chloe focused her attention back on the shoes. She could see that they were
quite lovely, but she also saw chaos while looking at them. How was she going
to walk in those things? Chloe was used to wearing comfortable shoes, practical
shoes, and every day. She occasionally wore high heels, but it wasn't often.
"Chloe?" The voice was from Lex, Chloe could tell that voice from
anywhere.
"Just a minute," she yelled none too flattering. She looked back at
the clock on the vanity. Had she really been staring at those shoes for fifteen
minutes? Damn! She quickly put on the shoes. It took her a while to find a good
balance, but she eventually felt pretty comfortable in them. They almost felt
as though she wasn't wearing any shoes. Maybe there won't be complete and total
chaos tonight, then. Chloe looked into the mirror, making sure her lipstick was
perfectly in place over her lips. She made sure that there weren't any stray
strands of hair out of place. She quickly realized that she was making too big
of a fuss and decided to forget about it. "Okay, Chloe. Here you go."
She stepped out of the bedroom and into the dining room. Lex must have been in
the living room because he wasn't anywhere else. Chloe was almost to the
entrance, when she felt the butterflies light up in her stomach. "Come on,
girl." Did she just refer to herself as "girl?" She was making
too big of a deal out of this. It was just dinner, no, more like a meeting that
she happened to be invited to. It wasn't even a date. So why was she so
nervous?
Lex came around the corner of the entrance right then. He stopped in his
tracks; he just stood there, looking at her. Chloe didn't know what to do, she
didn't know what to say, which was a first. She could feel herself begin to
fidget, shivers started going up her arms. Damnit, why did he have to look at
her like that? As if he knew that she was slightly uncomfortable, "You
look…" Chloe looked up at him, immediately wishing that she hadn't. He was
dressed in a black suit; it was specifically tailored for a snug fit. The coat
was unbuttoned and pushed back a little to allow sight of the dark crimson,
silk shirt that he was wearing underneath. The colors of his suit and shirt
complemented the color of her dress perfectly. Complete strangers would
probably mistake them as a couple just by looking at their clothing. "Here
is your scarf." He held it out for her, Chloe had completely forgotten
about the beautiful crocheted scarf that had come along with her dress.
"I wasn't planning on wearing it, actually." Chloe was afraid that
she might tear it, or worse, lose it. The scarf was the only thing of the
entire outfit that she had planned on wearing in the future.
"Nonsense." Lex walked to her and pulled the scarf around her neck.
He positioned it in place with his expert fingers, allowing quick touches of
his skin against her collarbone. Chloe shut her eyes, hoping that he wouldn't
notice, and began imagining what it would be like if this really was a date.
"The vampires will already view you as meat. I don't want to encourage
them, though." His statement quickly brought her back to reality. He held
his arm out for her. "Shall we?" Chloe rolled her eyes; she couldn't
help it at this point, and took the offered arm. It was official; romance was
something to torture women with as they get older.
When Lex opened the door to the limousine, Chloe couldn't help but hesitate. So
far she was able to move just fine in the dress, but she hadn't tried to sit
down in it. "What is wrong?" Lex must have noticed her hesitation.
Chloe shook her head, "Nothing." She carefully folded herself into
the seat, scooting further in to allow room for Lex. So far so good, and she
gave herself a mental pat on the back. Some might not consider it much of an
accomplishment, but to Chloe who was currently squeezed into this tight dress,
anything was an accomplishment.
Lex sat next to her, closer than what was needed. Both of their hands were
relaxed to the sides of them, painfully close to touching one another's. With
one slight bump in the road and they would connect. Chloe didn't need that, not
right now. "What did you mean you didn't want to encourage them?"
Chloe suddenly remembered the conversation that they had earlier, about her
being seen as meat. She thought it was ridiculous, but then again she was
human. She supposed that vampires looked as human much like wolves looked at
rabbits.
"Excuse me?" Lex was acting like he didn't know what she was talking
about. Chloe knew better than that and gave him a "don't act coy"
look in return. "You're assets."
Chloe looked down at her plunging cleavage. "If you didn't want me to be
'encouraging' as you put it, then why did you pick this dress? If I didn't have
any breast this dress would still make me look as though I had plenty."
Lex looked at her for the first time that evening since leaving the hotel room.
Actually, it was the first time he looked at her face that is. She knew that he
was looking at her when she wasn't looking, especially when she walked in front
of him. Chloe could feel his eyes burning into her skin as he took her in. She
smiled at the fact that she had the Lex Luthor slightly pining over her. But
then she disregarded it as him admiring his skills at picking out a killer
dress, not actually him admiring her.
"I wanted to see you in the dress," he said with his voice ultra low,
the type of voice that reminded people of sex and nothing else. Chloe knew that
she looked shocked. Then the words of her masseuse from earlier had come back
to her. She couldn't believe it, she refused to believe it. Lex wasn't in love
with her. He didn't even like blondes! Chloe figured that he was just lusting
after her a little, if that. Hell, he probably just wanted to see her in that
in hopes that his little present would win her over and make her forget about
their argument from earlier. Yeah, that was it.
He switched his focus, from her, back to the lit streets outside. Chloe noticed
that one of his hands was no longer relaxed at his side. Instead Lex was
leaning into it against the window. He looked stressed for the first time since
they've been here. He didn't even look stressed when they were fighting or
during any of the other awkward moments that had occurred. Maybe it was the
dinner. He was probably stressed out about the business.
The limo pulled to a stop. Some valet boy opened the door for Lex, who ended up
opening the door for Chloe. She was able to get out of the limo with little
difficulty, to her surprise. Chloe noticed the tastefully done sign that read
"Landry's." There were bright lights coming from the multi-glassed
windows of the restaurant. They were shortly greeted by the maitre d, who was a
very tall and well built, older man. "Mr. Luthor, so good to see you this
evening. Come right this way."
"Thank you." Lex snuck his hand around the small of Chloe's back,
which made her shiver underneath. He was motioning for her to follow behind the
maitre d, and she did so. The trouble was that his hand was still rested at the
small of her back, making it extremely difficult for her to concentrate on such
a meaningless task such as walking.
As they moved further into the restaurant, Chloe noticed the wavy gold hair
shining in the light in the very far corner of the restaurant. Chloe could see
nothing but that gold hair, and she didn't care to see anything else either.
She could feel her nerves getting excited as they neared to the table, as they
neared to Asher. She really didn't know what was wrong with her. She'd never
been so excited to see a man in all her life, except for Lex. What was wrong
with her? Lusting after two men at the same time was surely to bring her
nothing but disappointment. Sure, one was in love with someone else, so there
was no luck there really and the other one just so happened to be a vampire who
she knew absolutely nothing about. She wasn't positive but it seemed as if he'd
only spoken two sentences at the most to her so far. So why was she lusting
after him so badly?
Jean-Claude smiled at the both of them. Chloe tried to hold back her laughter
as she took in the sight of his long, fluffy sleeves and his skintight black
pants. He wore a nice, long coat, though, that was of the same color of blue as
his eyes. He wore boots, with what looked to be a heel on them, that were
pulled over his pants. The man, or vampire, needed to start realizing that he
was no longer a musketeer. "Good evening. You look absolutely radiant, ma
petite reporter."
"What did you call me?" Chloe heard him, and she didn't know much
French but she knew that he called her his little reporter. She was not his
little reporter; she was no one's little reporter for that matter.
"I would like to know that myself, as well." Chloe didn't even notice
the female that was sitting with the two vampires, sandwiched in between both
of them. She was small, like Chloe, except she had medium length, brown hair,
almost black. It was curly and unmanageable. The woman didn't look to be very
comfortable in the figure hugging dress either. Chloe knew what that was like
and automatically felt sympathetic. But what was she doing sitting next to
Asher, though? Oh, God! Was she really already turning jealous?
"Ah, ma petite, you haven't met Mr. Luthor or his companion
yet." Chloe was about to object to the companion comment, but Jean-Claude
beat her out of it. "Mr. Luthor, Miss Sullivan, this is my human servant
Anita Blake."
Anita Blake? The name sounded familiar and Chloe wished that she knew why. She
was really wishing that she had done research like she had planned on doing
earlier, but the masseuse came fairly early and she ended up staying for a
really long time. Apparently, Chloe had a lot tension in her back. Chloe would
just call it stress of sleeping in the same building with Lex, but whatever.
"Nice to meet you." Chloe held out her hand to shake Anita's, but she
ended up turning her down. What the hell? Were all brunettes in this damn city
psychos or something? Were they raised not to be cordial and polite to people?
Chloe decided to glare at her instead, which was returned by a challenging
glare from Anita. She was starting to get on Chloe's nerves real fast.
Asher and Jean-Claude both stood from where they were sitting in hopes of
breaking the tension between the both of them. Asher succeeded, Chloe could
really care less about Jean-Claude for the moment, especially when she saw
Asher in his full glory. Asher, thank God, decided to choose more modern
attire. He was dressed in a dark chocolate suit that was a snug fit much like
Lex's. His dress shirt was stark white, and Chloe couldn’t help but think that
his suit complemented her dress much like Lex's did. Then the thought of all
three of them looking like a couple came to mind, and she oh so wished she
hadn't of thought that. Not that the picture was bad or anything, because it
was far from it, it was just something she didn't need to think about at the
time before naughtier thoughts started to come to her mind.
"Please sit, ma cherie." Chloe was delighted at the fact that
Asher had offered the chair that was next to his. He held the chair out for
her, like the gentleman he was, and Chloe looked back at Lex and gave him a
quick smile before taking the offered chair. Asher smiled at her, and leaned
over to her, causing his long, wavy hair to tickle against the tender skin of
her chest. Normally she would have told someone that was that close to back
off, but she welcomed the feel of his waves as they puddle against her flesh.
"You look breathtakingly beautiful tonight, ma petite reporter."
Instead of getting mad at the nickname, she smiled back at him. The nickname
coming from his lips was far different than what it was coming from
Jean-Claude's. Asher could call her whatever he wanted as far as she was
concerned.
"Thank you. I must say that you are looking quite handsome,
yourself." She smiled her flirtatious smile at him, which seemed to catch
him by surprise. Chloe was very aware what her smile could do to some members
of the opposite sex. She might sound crazy, but she thought Lex was even
affected by it just a little himself. The fact that she could do the same thing
to a vampire, especially one such as Asher, was purely delightful. Maybe this
one was attainable after all, unlike Lex.
Chloe watched as he sat beside her. "Thank you. Your words are too
kind." He smiled that gorgeous smile at her, and she could literally feel
herself melting. Chloe then turned to Lex when she saw Asher take his eyes off
of her and on to Lex. He had sat right next to her. She felt like she was
sandwiched in between the two most gorgeous men to ever walk the earth. Even if
they weren't interested in her, though she wasn't entirely sure on Asher, she
still felt like the luckiest girl in the world at that moment.
"Here is your menu, madam." The maitre d slipped the menu in front of
her, then one in front of Lex. Chloe noticed that the others had already had
their menus opened and that they were waiting on them to arrive before
ordering.
She was surprised to find out that the entire menu was in French. Chloe began
to panic; she tried her best not to show it. What was she going to do? She
didn't know any French. Sure, she knew a little bit, or enough to get her to
the hospital if she needed to, anyways. Chloe turned to Lex, who must have
guessed already that she needed help, because he was already ordering for her.
Thank God for Lex! She leaned into him and lowered her voice in hopes that no
one else could hear her, "What did you order me?"
"Steak," he replied.
"How rare?" She was hoping that it wasn't going to still be mooing on
the plate when it arrived.
"Medium," he smiled at her and then turned his polite, business smile
to Jean-Claude.
Well, at least the steak wasn't rare she thought. She then noticed that the two
vampires didn't order anything except red wine. Anita ordered steak, she wanted
one half well done and the other half rare. Chloe thought that it was odd, but
she thought the vampires not eating at all was more odd. Then she supposed that
vampires couldn't eat, that they could only drink blood, which had to suck.
Food was so delicious, she couldn't imagine giving up food for blood. Then
again, she wasn't a vampire herself. She was sure that blood probably was like
sex to the vampires, though.
"I have brought various supplements to be put through trial. I am quite
optimistic that at least one will work." Lex spoke in his ultra-cool
business voice, his face was carefully masked. Chloe noticed that Jean-Claude's
face was also masked and then she noticed that so was Asher's. She turned to
look at Anita, who looked the least bit happy. At least she wasn't masking her
emotions, but that was as far as Chloe could compliment her.
"What is exactly in these supplements?" Anita's voice came out thick
and angry, as though she wasn't buying into the whole supplement idea. Chloe
didn't really know what was going on, but her interest was certainly peeked.
"My team of scientists have combined a source of meteor rocks with animal
blood. Of course there are varying degrees of other ingredients, but they are
only minor." Chloe didn't believe the part about the animal blood.
According to some of Lex's scientists, they had been testing the meteor rock
with human blood. She wanted to believe Lex, but deep down she knew better than
to believe a Luthor.
"What meteor rock?" The question came from Anita; her voice still led
her to sound angry, but not as much as earlier.
Chloe decided to step in, to make her voice known instead of sitting there like
a pretty face. "More than a decade ago, Smallville was hit by a large
meteor shower. There was this certain type of green rock that came from the
meteors themselves, and they have been found to produce some interesting
results."
"What kind of results?" The question came from both Asher and
Jean-Claude.
"I can loan you some copies of my articles, if you'd like?" She
smiled, glad that she could manage to introduce her work into the meeting
somehow.
Lex offered a smile to Chloe, and then to the rest of the dinner group,
"Miss Sullivan has done extensive research on the results of the meteor
rocks. They are quite astonishing." Chloe looked at Lex, surprised. She
didn't know why she was surprised of his bragging about her, it wasn't as
though he'd never complimented her before in her work, but it still surprised
her nonetheless.
"I will be more than happy to read your articles, ma petite reporter."
Chloe blushed at Asher's words. He was actually interested in her articles and
the butterflies danced in excitement at another opportunity of meeting with him
again.
"Good, maybe you can come by the club again tomorrow night, then?"
Jean-Claude smiled a polite smile at her and Lex. Chloe waited for Lex to say
something, disapproval or something, but received nothing. She took the liberty
to nod her head, excited about the possibilities of getting to know Asher some
more. "Perfect. Now, Mr. Luthor, if this supplement does work, how much
would you like in return?"
"I am not interested in financial gain, Jean-Claude." Chloe had to
look at Lex to make sure that she did in fact hear that come from his lips. If
Lex wasn't interested in the money, then what was he interested in? Chloe knew
that Lex was up to something, and it didn't seem good either, she could feel
it. She'd like to think that she knew Lex well enough to know when he was
dealing with fire and he was enjoying it. This was fire, and he was delighted
like a little demon child.
"Vous voulez nous donner le supplément gratis?" Chloe looked
to Jean-Claude then. She had no clue what he had just said, but she knew that
he was a little shocked because he let his mask slip just a little bit before
putting it up thicker and heavier than before.
Lex smiled his business smile, "Pas gratuitement. Je ne donne rien
gratuitement. Non, je veux quelquechose en retour." Chloe was really
starting to get mad that they were now speaking in French. Damn them! Didn't
they know that she couldn't understand what the hell they were saying? Besides
that, Lex sounded even sexier when he spoke French, and Chloe hated that fact.
"Qu'est-ce donc? Et choisissez soigneusement vos mots, Mr
Luthor." The words had come from Asher this time, and his voice literally
sent shivers up her arms. His voice sounded threatening, but still seductive.
Chloe didn't know what she was going to do if the two sexiest men in the world
that were currently sandwiching her continued to speak in what is known as the
"love" language. Chloe desperately wanted to know whatever the hell
it was that they were saying in hopes of not finding it as sexy if she knew.
Chloe glanced at Anita before refocusing her attention back to Lex. She noticed
that Anita looked as confused as Chloe felt at that moment. She then assumed
that Anita didn't know much French, either. Or unless the conversation that the
three men were now having was confusing, which is why Chloe wished that they
were speaking English.
Lex hesitated, something that was quite unusual for him. His mask was carefully
in place so that no one, including Chloe, could tell what it was that he was
thinking. "Le supplément pour la vie éternelle."
"Non!" Anita stood from her seat and slammed her fist against
the table. She let out a quick sigh, "No. I will not let that
happen." So she knew French after all, which left Chloe to be the only
clueless one at the table. She did know this, though; that whatever it was that
Lex just said made Anita really, really pissed. She looked back at the short
brunette and notice that her eyes were beginning to glaze over, much like how
one's does during sex. Anita was gasping and hugging herself now, she fell into
her chair. What the hell? Jean-Claude was trying to touch her, but Anita
motioned her hand for him to stay back then went back to hugging herself.
"It's the ardeur."
"You have not fed tonight, ma petite?" Chloe and Lex both gave
a quick, confused look at each other, then looked back at the couple before
them. Anita shook her head at Jean-Claude's question. "We must go, I
apologize for ending this dinner so quickly, but I must get Anita home. She is
not… feeling well." Jean-Claude looked to Asher, who was sitting there
like everything that had just happened was completely normal. "Mon ami?"
"I will stay and entertain our guests, mon ami." Jean-Claude
nodded his thanks to Asher, and Chloe mentally did so as well, and he helped
Anita to her feet. Chloe watched as the two struggled to leave the restaurant,
the brunette looked as though she was fighting with her life not to have sex
with Jean-Claude. Chloe felt her gut churn as she thought about sex with
Jean-Claude. The vampire wore more feminine clothing then she did, he looked
more feminine than masculine, as well.
"Thank you for staying." Chloe smiled at Asher to which she received
a pure, seductive smile in return. She could feel the butterflies dancing in
her lower stomach once more, as he continued to look at her.
"It is my pleasure, ma petite reporter." He took her hand in
his and laid a soft kiss on her palm. Chloe felt like she was going to die from
too much sexual desire.
Chloe had to admit that she felt weird being the only one actually eating.
Sure, Lex occasionally took a bite of his steak, but for the most part he spent
his time studying Asher. He was probably trying to find the vampire's
weaknesses so he could use them to his advantage for future meetings. Chloe
rolled her eyes. Asher spent his time watching both her and Lex. With each bite
of their food, Asher's eyes lit up as if each bite was a start to a wet dream.
"I apologize for staring. It has been a long time since I have been able
to consume food." Asher gave them a charming smile. That answered Chloe's
question about vampires and food. As far as Chloe was concerned, though, Asher
could stare all he wanted. In fact, she more than welcomed it.
"How old are you?" Chloe received a warning look from Lex. She rolled
her eyes at him. She knew very well that Lex had been wondering the same thing
all night.
Asher seemed to be amused because he let out a charming laugh in response to
her question. Her body began to react in ways that just were not appropriate at
the dinner table. "How old do you think I am, ma petite reporter,"
he asked with a smile.
Those smiles were soon going to be the death of her. "You look to be in
your twenties, possibly thirties. But, I know that is not your real age."
She received another one of his amused smiles.
Lex broke in, "He's two hundred years old. Give or take a couple of years."
The two men stared at one another, both hiding behind their masks. Chloe wasn't
entirely certain, but they both seemed to find the whole thing amusing. The
tension between them was thick, though. If she hadn't known them, she would
mistake them for lovers who had just been in an argument.
Asher decided to break the silence, "Close, Mr. Luthor,
but you are still off."
"Je vous en prie, appelez moi Lex." Lex offered Asher one of
his polite smiles, while leaving Chloe clueless to what he just said. She thought
that they would be over this whole talking in French thing.
Asher gave a slight shrug, "Ce que tu veux."
"Do vampires have any powers? You know, besides being immortal and
all." Chloe figured that she should start breaking in the questions now before
the rest of the night was going to be spent conversing in French.
"Oui. We usually develop powers as we get older, but some vampires
never develop any power no matter how old they may be." Asher smiled, only
this time Chloe could have sworn she'd seen a hint of fangs. It surprised her,
she didn't know why really. She knew that he was a vampire, but the flash of
fangs still surprised her nonetheless. The fact that he might be older or
younger than two hundred years surprised her as well. She couldn’t figure out
if she should be disgusted or not. Chloe certainly did not feel disgust when
she looked at him, though. She then wondered if a person who had sex with
vampires would be considered a necrophiliac. Not that she wanted to have sex
with a certain golden haired one who was sitting next to her at the moment, or
anything. "Of course, each vampire's power does differ from
another's."
"What do you mean, exactly?" Chloe did realize that her question did
come off as sounding dumb, but she wanted Asher to give examples, details.
"Some vampires can call upon shape shifters, some can move from one body
to the next." Chloe didn't like the idea of a vampire taking over her body
and using it as their own. Her disgust must have shown. "Jean-Claude's
powers are not as grotesque; his has more to do with sex than anything
else."
The mention of Jean-Claude and sex in the same sentence was enough to make
Chloe laugh out loud. "What do you mean," she asked. She had to admit
that she was a little curious, but only a little bit.
“Jean-Claude can feed off of other’s desires, sexual desires.” Chloe stared at
Asher, trying to figure out if he was telling the truth. He looked back at her,
mask perfectly in place. “The ardeur could be perceived as a curse, if
dealt with the wrong way. Anita, unfortunately, has obtained the ardeur
through Jean-Claude.”
“Wait, what is an ardeur,” Chloe asked.
Asher sighed; it took Chloe aback at first. “Anita has to have some form of
intimacy to feed the ardeur, it feeds off of other’s desires, off of
sex. Otherwise, she will infect everyone with a strong desire to… make love to
her.”
Chloe could feel her eyes began to water she was laughing so hard. She could
feel both Asher’s and Lex’s eyes on her. Hell, the entire restaurant’s crowd
had their eyes on her. She tried to hold it back, but she couldn’t help it.
After a few minutes of calming down, with much inserts of giggles, she finally
stopped and cleared her throat. “Are you serious?” Asher didn’t say anything,
he just nodded his head. Chloe tried not to laugh like before, but she simply
couldn’t contain it. “Sorry,” she cleared her throat once more. “What kind of
powers do you have?”
He smiled that charming smile at her, “My powers have a lot to do with
sex, as well. Mine are more on the giving side, rather than the taking.”
Chloe could feel her stomach tighten. Her throat all of a sudden seemed dry;
she took a big gulp before trying to speak. “What kind of giving do you
do, exactly?” Lex looked at her and gave her another one of his warning looks.
She noticed that he quickly re-focused his attention back to Asher. He looked
like he wanted to know exactly what Asher meant as much as she did.
“Pleasure, ma petite reporter.” If there was a time to stop breathing
then Chloe obviously picked the best time. Her sharp inhale of air was breathy
and loud, it caught both Lex’s and Asher’s attention. She watched as Asher gave
her a seductive smile. Chloe then looked to Lex. She couldn’t tell if he was
angry or intrigued. Probably both. Chloe knew she was feeling the latter; of
course she was already intrigued with Asher as soon as she had set her eyes on
him.
“You’re a master as well, I presume? Are you as powerful as Jean-Claude?” It
was Lex who had asked the question. He was intrigued after all.
“I am a master, oui; I do not have an animal to call, however. I am
Jean-Claude’s second.” Chloe was about to ask if he was older than Jean-Claude
when Asher interrupted her thoughts. “I am older, but remember that some can
live to be a thousand years or more and never become a master.”
“ De quelle manière un vampire devient-il un maître?” Chloe looked at
Lex, his face was controlled, and she had no clue to what he just said either.
“ Vous voulez en devenir un, mon chauve? Est-ce pour cela que vous demandez
l'immortalité?” Asher smiled at Lex, the same seductive one that she was
now used to seeing.
“Can we please speak English? Not everyone here is fluent in French, you know.”
Chloe looked for some kind of sign that they heard her. She knew that they had,
but they were too busy looking at one another to pay attention to her. Yes, she
was acting like a bitch right now. She didn’t care, she didn’t know French and
they knew it, but instead of stopping, they continued.
Chloe took the time out of her busy rant to notice that Lex looked about as
unhappy as she felt. He lowered his eyes; he must not have wanted to look
directly at Asher, which was a first for him. His hands were made into fists,
she watched as his knuckles began to turn white. If he didn’t stop he was going
to seriously hurt himself. Chloe softly touched his left hand; she could feel
the shivers go up her arm. Lex flinched a little, at first, but she noticed
that he soon began to relax; his hand was loosening out of the tight ball that
it was in. “ J'ai mes raisons de vouloir ce don. Maintenant, je vous
conseille fortement de ne plus m'appeler votre chauve. ”
Asher let out a startling laugh at whatever Lex had said. Chloe wondered if Lex
would mind stopping by a bookstore so she could pick up a French dictionary. “
Vos menaces n'ont aucun effet sur moi, et çà je vous le dirai qu'une seule
fois.”
Lex quickly grabbed Chloe’s hand, “We’re leaving.”
“What? Why?” She knew that they were having differences about something, but
why did they have to leave? Chloe knew Lex; anyone who knew him knew that he
doesn’t back down, ever. Whatever Asher just said must have really pissed Lex
off. Lex resorted to practically dragging Chloe out of the restaurant. She kept
looking back to see Asher, who was still sitting there, his smile still
perfectly in place. Was it wrong of her to not want to leave?
They were outside the restaurant, waiting for the limo to pull up. The driver
showed in less than a couple of seconds. Both her and Lex were about to get in
the car when the maitre d ran outside yelling for Lex. He paused for a
couple of seconds to catch his breath and held out a note to Lex, “The
gentleman who was dining with you earlier wanted me to give you this.”
Lex nodded his thanks. Chloe waited for him to open the note, but he never did.
Instead, he motioned for her to get inside the limo, against her own protests.
Lex moved in next to her, she noticed his arm that was leaned up against the
door. He rested his head against the hand, and for the first time that night
Chloe noticed how tired he looked. “Lex? What is going on?” She tried to make
her voice as soft and soothing as possible.
He didn’t answer her, he just looked at her. Chloe could feel herself began to
blush, despite the situation, underneath his stare. Lex remained quiet, doing
absolutely nothing but looking at her, or through her. She didn’t know what to
think. She had no clue what had happened. Lex still hadn’t read the note. Chloe
didn’t like to be in the dark of things, that’s why she was a reporter after
all. She valued knowledge, but right this moment she knew she couldn’t do
anything about it. Why was Lex still looking at her?
Fine then, she decided it didn’t matter if Lex told her anything or not. She
will wait for him to go to sleep, or leave the room, and she’ll get the note
and read it for herself if he was going to continue acting that way. Of course,
he had to take it out of his pants pockets first.
