One Month Later-
Sarah stopped playing mid-phrase and cracked her knuckles. A glance at the clock surprised her. Four hours had passed since she sat down to work on her piano concerto
She picked up the pile of manuscript paper, rifling through and checking her work.
"Not too bad ol’ girl…" She smiled at one section in particular. "Not too bad at all."
Her stomach rumbled for attention. Still humming her melodies to herself, Sarah got up and stretched and then headed to the kitchen to scrounge up something for lunch.
Opening the pantry door produced disappointment. Unless she wanted another bowl of cold cereal to eat, Sarah would have to give in and go to the market for some groceries.
Oh well, that’s as good an excuse to run into town for a bit…take a little break before I finish up that last section.
Decision made, Sarah headed upstairs to shower and change, plotting an afternoon of activities in her head. Grab some lunch at the diner, get groceries, maybe stop and get a dvd or two…that will make for an exciting Saturday night.
A half hour later she was in her Honda headed down the gravel driveway. Although the dense woods around her cabin gave a feeling of isolation, it was a fairly quick drive to Pepin. Sarah pulled into a parking place in front of the Harbor View and her stomach rumbled again as if it knew where she was at.
Walking in the front door, Sarah noticed the place hadn’t changed a bit since she had come the last time with Nana. Inhaling the aromas wafting from the kitchen she realized it even smelled the same.
"Sit anywhere you like," came the call from the teenager working the register.
Sarah smiled and headed to the counter to take a seat on one of the barstools. Grabbing one of the menus, she glanced through the items and saw that it smelled the same because the same food was still being cooked and served.
"Whatcha want to drink?" The waitress was as casual as the restaurant.
"Iced tea will be fine."
"OK. You know what you want to eat?"
"Umm…let me have the grilled chicken sandwich."
"With cheese?"
"Sure and some fries with it too, please."
"No problem, be ready in a few."
The girl brought Sarah’s tea and then turned the order in. As she sipped her tea, Sarah got the odd feeling that someone was staring at her. Before she had a chance to turn and look she felt a tap on her shoulder.
"I just knew it was you, Sarah."
Sarah turned and recognized the older woman immediately.
"Mrs. Annette! How good to see you!" She instantly gave a big hug to her Nana’s best friend.
"Come over here to the booth and sit. I would love to hear how you’ve been doing."
Without hesitation Sarah grabbed her tea glass and crossed the small café, taking a seat across from Mrs. Annette in a faded vinyl booth.
The older woman smiled. "So when did you get into town?"
"Almost a month ago." Seeing the lady’s surprised look Sarah continued. "I haven’t been out much. Been busy unpacking, getting things organized, stuff like that."
"I was so surprised to see you sitting there. Last I heard you were in LA. Do you plan to be here long or is it some kind of vacation?"
Sarah sipped her tea. "I needed a….break…I guess you could say. LA’s great but it was time for a change, a little peace and quiet." She ignored Mrs. Annette’s curious look. "So I decided to move into Nana’s place.
"What will you do here? I am afraid there are many ‘gigs’ as you call them. Well then again," she sipped her own drink. "The Lutheran church on Main is looking for a pianist, but that’s about it as far as musician jobs."
Sarah chuckled. "That’s quite alright. I am working on my doctorate from UW. Most of the coursework is online and being here makes it easier to get all the paperwork and compositions done." She paused as the waitress sat the two orders in front of them.
"Do you ladies need anything else?" At the shake of both heads, the waitress left them to their food and conversation.
"So how have you and your family been? I know it’s been awhile since I have seen you, but you look well." Indeed the only changes Sarah could notice were the streaks of gray in the once jet black hair (still coiled in the tight bun she had always worn) and a few deeper smile lines on her face. But for a lady in her sixties, Sarah had to admit Mrs. Annette was doing pretty well.
"I’m fit as a fiddle, girl. Meghan’s got two boys and a girl now, and still manages to teach dance classes. They try to come visit at least once a month, they are living in Red Wing now."
Sarah laughed as she wiped the corner of her mouth, picturing the chaos of three kids in Mrs. Annette’s house. " Do you still have your shop?"
"Oh yes, that’s what keeps me puttering around. In fact you should come by since you’re in town. I just got a shipment of European antiques yesterday. Absolutely gorgeous pieces, from an auction in Paris."
"I would, but…"
"No buts girl. Now that I know you’re in town, you certainly aren’t going to stay holed up in that cabin all the time, work or not."
Sarah couldn’t argue with that. So far she had had an enjoyable afternoon. "Well let me run a few errands and I’ll make a quick stop before I head back home.
"Fair enough." Mrs. Annette quickly snatched the two checks left by the waitress. "Lunch is on me."
At Sarah’s surprised look the older woman laughed lightly. "Hey if I pay for luch then you’ll feel guilty if you don’t come by."
"You’re entirely too much like Nana!" Sarah shook her head in exasperation.
"I know…that’s what I loved about her, she was always plotting something fun. I miss her everyday."
Sarah nodded. "Yeah after I lost Mom and Dad in that accident, Nana kept me grounded. I thought she’d be around forever… childish, huh?"
"No girl, not childish, just loving and she was the same way." They walked over to the register to pay. Sarah held the door for Mrs. Annette as they stepped out into the sunny day.
"Now go on and get your errands done and then stop by! "
"Yes ma’am." The older lady was impossible to argue with.
"See you in a little bit then, dear." She tapped her cane and headed down the sidewalk.
"Wait! Can’t I give you a ride?"
"Child I’m old, not dead. How do you think I got here?" She grinned and set off again.
Sarah hopped in her Honda and began the rest of her afternoon.
