A few days had passed since Ashira's arrival, and still Jaenelle had not returned. Ashira seemed to be adapting well to the new place...to not having to fight or be afraid. Until one night...
Ashira burst into Saetan’s study where he, Daemon, and Lucivar were going over some documents. She was disheveled and still in her sleep clothes.
“Ashira, what is it?” Saetan was alarmed. Daemon drew the grey-jeweled witch to a chair, holding her hand.
“I’ll kill him if he touches me.” She warned. “I swear I will.”
“Who?” Lucivar started for the door.
The door burst open again before Lucivar reached it. Morton stood there, looking decidedly disheveled himself. He saw Ashira in the chair and started towards her. Lucivar stood in his way.
“It’s her moontime, she should not use her jewels. It hurt her. She needs me, let me pass.”
Lucivar bared his teeth. “Leave her alone.” He snarled. “She does not need you.” Daemon stood beside his brother, further blocking the way of the young warlord prince.
“Did you hurt her Morton?” he asked in his soft, deadly voice.
“No, I serve her.” Morton snarled back. “Let me pass now. I have waited long enough to serve.”
“She does not wish to be served Morton.” Saetan felt pity for the warlord prince. His sons however, were on the killing edge and Morton was in danger. “Go now.”
“I claim her.” Morton’s voice was soft now too, he stepped forward, ready to confront Lucivar and Daemon together.
“Enough.” Ashira stepped between Morton and the deadly brothers. “He has not harmed me, I deny his claim.” That would have decided it, but then Morton put his arms around her.
“NO!!” she screamed, unleashing a grey blast that threw the young warlord prince to the door of Saetan’s study. With a slight wince, she silently accepted pain that incapacitated other witches as the price of using the power of her jewels during her moontime washed over her. She looked towards Morton, he was already crawling towards her.
“No,” she looked up at Daemon, pleading, “please, I don’t want to kill him.”
Daemon picked up Ashira and bore her to her rooms. Lucivar and Saetan hauled the young warlord prince to his feet and sat him in a chair.
“What’s gotten into you boy?” Saetan asked harshly.
“She needs me.” Morton gasped, still reeling from her blast. He tried getting to his feet.
“She’ll kill you.” Lucivar pointed out, pushing him back into the chair.
“You don’t understand where she came from Morton. It will take some time before she’ll be ready to accept attention from a male.” Saetan shook his head.
“And if you keep this up,” Lucivar continued, “she’ll never be ready.”
“Tell us what happened.” Saetan handed the young man a glass of brandy.
Morton spoke without looking up. “It’s her moontime, I brought her a tonic. She didn’t want to let me in at all, but I told her Jaenelle had made the tonic. I tried to hold her, and she used her jewels, then ran away.” He looked up at Saetan. “I saw how much it hurt her to use her magic, I wanted to help her, comfort her.”
“Ah, Morton, there is so much you don’t know about her.”
“Then teach me, I want to learn.”
Daemon came back into the room then. “She’s fine, resting comfortably.” He sat beside Morton and accepted a glass of brandy from Saetan. He took a sip and set the glass on the table beside the sofa before turning to Morton. “It’s up to you now Morton,” he said softly, “convince me that I should not kill you.”
“I serve her.”
“You tried to climb in bed with her during her moontime.”
“To hold her.” Morton flushed angrily. “How dare you question me. Do you think I would take advantage of a witch during her moontime?” Morton stood, glaring at Daemon. “I have been around strong queens all my life, I know how to give comfort, and that is all I was trying to do.”
“Enough,” Daemon held up his hands, “I know you meant her no harm. But Mother Night, have you no sense? She is a strong queen, yes; but she is a strong queen who has known very little kindness from males. You frightened her badly. You’re lucky she didn’t kill you.”
“I know, I know,” Morton slumped his shoulders. “I never meant to frighten her. How can I ever make it up to her? Whenever I’m near her, I feel…” Morton’s voice became a growl, “I can’t be other than what I am. Will she, nil she, I serve her.” Without another word or apology, Morton turned on his heel and left.
“She’s going to kill him.” Saetan groaned.
Daemon shook his head, “If she were, she would have done it by now. She knows he means no harm. She just doesn’t understand what he could possibly want.”
“Perhaps Lucivar could talk to her.” Saetan mused, “He can explain how male female relationships work here, and he understands the place she was before.”
