Chapter 2
Mia woke up just after 3pm. After taking a shower she got dressed and though Darius said she could look around the house she felt uncomfortable with snooping around. Feeling hungry she decided to see what he had in his kitchen and see if she could prepare dinner for them. As she made her way down the stairs she could smell baking bread. Thinking Darius must have gotten up she entered the kitchen to find a middle-aged woman humming while she kneed dough on the counter. “Hello?”
The woman turned to look at Mia and smiled, “Oh, hi there. You must be Mia. My name is Betsy, Darius’ housekeeper. He left a little note saying I was suppose to feed you and get you anything you would want if you should wake before him. Are you hungry?”
Mia liked her already. Nodding she said, “Sure, whatever you have there is fine. It smells delicious.”
“Spaghetti and cheese bread sound good? It is one of Darius’ favorites.”
“That sounds great,” Mia said as she came to stand next to the counter.
Betsy smiled and pointed to the fridge, “You go ahead and grab something to drink out of the fridge and sit at the table and I will make you a plate.”
Grabbing a diet coke out of the fridge Mia went and sat at the table and asked, “Will you eat with me?”
“Sure. I haven’t eaten yet.”
Mia ate too many meals alone. Plus she thought she might get some information about Darius. Some things he may not say himself. When Betsy sat down with their food they ate in silence for a few minutes.
Finally Betsy asked, “How do you like Darius’ house Mia?”
“It is quite interesting. I haven’t seen much but what I’ve seen is beautiful,” Mia said after she took a drink of her soda.
“Yes. I tell you though the first time I came here to start work I thought I was going to have to clean stone floors. I wouldn’t have been surprised to find rushes on the floor,” Betsy said with a smile.
Mia laughed, “I know what you mean. I was surprised when I came in to see all the beautiful wood floors and archways. I love his library. All of those old books.”
“If you love them you should see his armory. That is what Darius calls the room. He’s got it filled with old ancient medieval weapons and armor. I don’t know how he found them all. You know sometimes I tease him and call him ‘My Lord’ or ‘Sir Knight’. But goodness you should see that man ride a horse. He has a stable out back pass the garden. He has some beautiful horses,” Betsy sighed.
Mia said with excitement, “I’ve never ridden a horse before.”
“You should have him teach you,” Betsy smiled. “I am so happy you are here Mia.”
“How come?” Mia queried.
“Darius doesn’t admit it but he is lonely. I see it. He very rarely has friends over. They usually are someone he works with. In fact the only friends I think he has are Ash and his daughter Simi. And I tell you they are strange. He has never brought a lady home before.”
“Betsy I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. We aren’t… I mean it isn’t like that,” Mia stammered.
“Mia it is okay. But I think you are going to do Darius good. He needs someone to open up to. Heaven knows I’ve tried. I have a feeling you will have more luck,” Betsy said, patting Mia’s hand.
Mia blushed, “Thank you. I owe Darius a lot. I hope I can help him.”
Mia thought of how her life has already changed since she met Darius. Now knowing more about the daimons she was still frightened of them but they weren’t a complete mystery now. The part of her that never healed after her mother’s death was starting to. She didn’t think it would ever heal completely but at least she thought it would enough for her to go on with her life. Meeting Darius made Mia realize how she just buried the pain and never really faced it. She would do anything to help Darius; she just hoped it wouldn’t cost her the rest of her heart.
Just when they were finishing their food Darius came into the kitchen. “Betsy have you been telling stories about me again?” Darius asked, his arms crossed over his chest.
“Me?” Betsy asked, feigning shock, “Of course not. Hungry?”
Darius didn’t believe the innocent look that she gave him.
Trying not to smile Mia said, “I promise My Lord, she didn’t say anything too bad.”
Sitting down Darius looked at Mia, “Don’t you start with that My Lord business.”
Mia was just playing but caught that look of pain that Darius quickly covered by getting up to get a beer out of the fridge.
After Betsy put Darius’ food on the table she said, “If you don’t need me anymore this evening I will clean up and go home. Fred will be home from his fishing trip and I would like to be there when he gets there.”
“Don’t worry about cleaning up. I can do it later. Go ahead and go home,” Darius said as he started to eat.
Betsy smiled, “Thanks,” then she turned to Mia and said, “Mia it was so nice to meet you.”
Smiling Mia said, “Likewise. I hope to see you again.”
“Me too, goodnight you two,” Betsy said as she put on her sweater.
“Goodnight Betsy. Say hi to Fred for me,” Darius said between bites.
“Will do,” Betsy said over her shoulder as she left the kitchen.
Mia and Darius sat there in silence while he ate. When he was done he pushed his plate aside and rested his forearms on the table and asked, “Did you sleep well Mia?”
“Somewhat. How about you?” she asked back.
“A little,” Darius said. He had dreamt of Mia, of kissing her and making her his. He also dreamt of her calling for him and he couldn’t find her. She was hurt and he couldn’t help her because she was always just out of his reach.
Mia had many questions but asked the first one she wanted an answer to. “Why haven’t you aged Darius? How old are you?”
Darius sighed, knowing that she deserved some answers, even though it meant going against the rules. “When we are made into a Dark Hunter we are given powers and immortality.”
Mia just sat there and stared at him. He really was different. She sensed things in him but immortal? Asking her next question, “Who made you?”
Taking a deep breath Darius asked, “You’ve heard the theories about the lost city of Atlantis haven’t you?”
Mia became still, “Yes.”
Darius then told Mia how the God Apollo created a race of people called the Appolites. He made them to be more beautiful than humans and gave them powers. He told her how they betrayed him by killing his mistress and his unborn child. He then cursed them to never being able to walk in the sun so he never had to look at them. He then made it where they would die a horrible death on the twenty-seventh birthday because that was the age of his mistress at her death.
“But surely all the ones who betrayed him are dead. Why is he punishing their descendants?” she asked, outraged.
“It is not wise to anger a God. I know that it is not fair that they should have to die at such a young age but they have no right to take other people’s lives to preserve theirs,” Darius said vehemently.
Mia nodded, “I know. So, taking other people’s souls, that makes them daimons?”
“Yes. When the daimons started preying on the humans, Apollo’s sister, Artemis, created us Dark Hunters to hunt them and protect the humans,” Darius replied.
Mia frowned, “How do you get chosen to be a Dark Hunter?”
Darius got up and went to rinse his plate off. He didn’t want Mia to see his face. Memories of his brother’s betrayal came flooding back. They had been Sarmatian Knights pledged down the generations to serve in the Roman army. At the time Rome occupied Britain. His brother Lars was the oldest of them two. He had always been cruel and arrogant but Darius still looked up to him because he was his older brother. He had been blind. When they arrived at their post Darius met a man, their captain, who changed his life. Arthur was his name and one day would become the famous King Arthur of legend. Darius soon found a brotherhood within the knights in their group. Shortly before they were to conclude their tour of duty Lars led their group into an ambush with the help of some rebels who fought the Romans, hoping to kill Arthur. Lars hated anything Roman and that included Arthur. Darius had loved Arthur as a brother and when Lars went to strike at Arthur’s back Darius flung himself at Arthur and took the killing blow. That betrayal of Lars had ended up costing two others in their group their lives, including Lars himself.
Shaking off the memory he said, “When a soul dies and cries out for vengeance, Artemis comes to offer them a chance at revenge in exchange for serving her and becoming a Dark Hunter. She gives us immortality and powers to help fight the daimons.”
Mia sensed his pain. She wondered who betrayed him to cause him to want revenge. She also knew that he was holding something back. “What else are you not telling me Darius?”
Turning to look at her he said, “We must give our soul to Artemis as payment for our revenge.”
