Disclaimer: I do not own the Anita Blake series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Author’s note: Ummm…definitely OOC-ness from EVERY character Laurell K. Hamilton has created. I only hope that this is at least satisfactory.
Part One
Jean Claude is NOT at all pleased with me getting one of his lovers to chastise him so he has me given a tour of the Circus of the Damned by another while he goes and licks his wounds. I am still snickering when the door opens revealing the same man I’d taken blood from, Nathaniel. “Do you enjoy causing people grief?” he asks trying to keep from grinning.
“He’s making me live so I think causing his lover aggravation with him is a good way to pay him back,” I respond. He snickers.
“You really are quite devious.”
“I am French after all. It is something we are good at,” I tell him with a grin.
“I definitely like you,” Nathaniel comments.
“Why thank you, mon ami,” I respond. It was easy to grow fond of Nathaniel. The male oozed a geniality that was hard to resist. I followed him around as he showed me the place I would be staying. It was huge and very, very classy. Obviously this vampire liked to live in style. I was intently impressed though I still did not feel the least bit guilty for causing problems with him and a lover. I am, after all, quite deviant. It is a personality quirk that I tend to use a bit too often and am too fond of.
Nathaniel finally shows me to a lavish bedroom. “This will be where you will sleep,” he says.
I stare at the finely decorated chambers in awe. “This is where I will sleep?” I ask sure that the wereleopard is being sarcastic.
“Yes, these are your chambers now. Jean Claude is very particular about his guests being comfortable.”
“I only wonder how long he will agree to house me. I do not believe I made the best impression on him. I shouldn’t have been so vain or petty but he had no need to interfere in things that did not directly concern him.”
“You still shouldn’t have tried to kill yourself.”
“My life is my own business and no one else’s. If I did not want to live to be a vampire, that was my own decision.”
“While that may be true, decency would lead someone to believe it in your best interest to save you from yourself.”
“Oh wonderful, decent people still DO exist.”
“Stop being snide,” a new voice says from the doorway.
“Hello, Jason, did Jean Claude send you?” Nathaniel asks.
“No, but I decided that meeting the one who has put him in the proverbial icebox might be a good idea.”
“Anita got mad at him?”
“Asher was yelling at him and she walked in.”
“Oh no.”
Looking at both of their worried expressions it was obvious to me that I had DEFINITELY made an enemy of the Master of St. Louis. However, I couldn’t really bring myself to care as I hadn’t wanted him to interfere in the first place. Though there was some measure of guilt there due to my upbringing. I was a gentleman after all and it really wasn’t kind of me to have gotten him in trouble with the people dearest to his heart. “I want to talk to them,” I announced after a few minutes of deep contemplation.
“Are you sure? Anita and Asher can be very difficult to deal with.”
“I have dealt with worse, mon ami. I need to clear this up before he becomes my enemy. While I may not agree with his decision it is not my place to make his life exceedingly miserable either.”
“I hope you truly know what you are doing,” the one named Jason says sounding very worried, “They may just blame you for this.”
I shrug my shoulders nonchalantly. It really wasn’t anything new to me to have people angry at my actions. I had a tendency to be aggravating and annoying. “Jason, I don’t think he is going to listen to you,” Nathaniel comments.
“Non, I am not. I got Jean Claude into this mess and I need to get him out of it. It is not fair to make him suffer for him doing what he thinks is right,” I respond, “Now if you would please be so kind as to show me to his lovers so that I may settle this once and for all.”
“Very well, it’s your funeral,” Jason mutters, “Anita is in a big enough snit as it is because she had to deal with Richard today.”
“Who is this Richard?”
“Another one of her lovers.”
I look at him in confusion. “What? How many lovers does she have?”
“A lot,” Nathaniel responds, “but she has a reason for it.”
“I would hope so,” I tell him, “though it truly is none of my business.”
“Of course it isn’t,” Jason responds. I roll my eyes at his annoyed tone. If there was one thing I had learned it was that this one was an enigma who was often so very vexing that one wanted to shoot him.
“if you are done warning me, could you tell me where to find Anita and or Asher?”
looking at me like I was insane, Jason beckons me to follow him down the hall. I do so ignoring the sensation that I was going to regret my actions before either two of them are done with me. Jason stops outside a door. “Either one or both of them will be in there,” he tells me indicating that he has NO intention of going anywhere NEAR the interior of the room.
I nod my head before saying, “Merci, monsieur, you have been very kind to me.”
“You need that before you get executed by the two of them,” Jason responds. I give him another nonchalant smile and knock on the door. The sooner I got this over with, the sooner my conscience would be satisfied.
Jason has disappeared down the hall before the door opens revealing a petite woman. “Hello, may I help you?” she asks looking at me curiously.
I give a rueful smile. “My name is Devion. I wanted to talk to you and or Asher about a misunderstanding.”
“Oh?” she inquires, and by the sound of her voice, I can tell she’s all ears. This was not going to be easy.
“I didn’t mean to make it sound like Jean Claude was being rude. He was only trying to help me. It was my aggravation at the situation and the circumstances handed to me that made me angry. I had no right to get him in trouble just because I hate that I am a vampire.”
She looks at me for a moment intently and I manage not to squirm. Then she smiles warmly. “I’m glad to hear that. I’m Anita, by the way.”
For a moment I am stunned to silence and then I realize they had known all along that it was not my intent and were testing to see if I would have the character to admit to that under pressure. I smile wryly. “Some test.”
She laughs. “Yes, well, I just wanted to know where you stood with morals.”
Smiling, I decided that these people, while not my first choice, were not such bad people to know. However, I do somber fast. “He is still aggravated with me, isn’t he?”
“A little bit but I think he’ll get over it. You are one of the few to take such an attitude with him.”
I shrug before stating nonchalantly, “I have a problem with authority.”
“How utterly charming,” another voice remarks from within the room.
“Asher, be nice,” Anita says over her shoulder, “or I will make sure that you and Jean Claude aren’t in bed together before morning.”
“Maybe I should go,” I suggest not wanting to hear the rest of the conversation. I really, really did NOT want to get caught in the middle of lover’s quarrel.
She smiles ruefully, “Maybe…it was nice meeting you though.” I merely tilt my head respectfully before heading back down the hallway. Now all I had to do was find my way back to the room without getting completely and totally lost. This was going to be extremely aggravating.
Seventeen turns later, I am completely and hopelessly lost within the corridors of the Circus of the Damned. “Merde,” I mutter dispassionately, “This is NOT good.”
“I would think not,” an unfamiliar voice comments. Turning, I come face to face with another vampire.
“Do you mind helping me?” I ask, “I am hopelessly lost.”
He chuckles wryly. “I would think so,” he remarks, “I am Requiem, by the way.”
“Devion,” I respond simply, “I would truly appreciate your help, mon ami.”
Once again, he smiles and I am taken aback by his beauty. I dare not, however, say anything to him. I almost miss his next words. “Of course I will help you find your way.”
I follow Requiem and by the time I arrive, I am completely smitten with the male. I was also quite sure that he was completely and utterly straight which was slightly depressing. “Merci, mon ami, I am very grateful for your help,” I murmur at the door.
“You’re welcome,” he responds with another knee-weakening smile before turning and disappearing up the hallway. I stare at the empty place he had just been at for a moment before reluctantly shutting the door. It was stupid. Requiem was obviously interested only in women and yet, I had to find him highly attractive. I smile wryly at the cruel irony that is. I’d have to find a more suitable candidate to fawn after. However, I knew in an instant it would be a losing battle. I was, as was said in this country, well and truly fucked.
