Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp Part One: The Lamp Once upon a time there was a young man named Aladdin who lived in China. He was a very strong boy who had gained strength from his daily work. And while he was not unintelligent, he had very little schooling. He lived with his Mother in a town outside the Imperial Palace. Aladdin had grown up learning to respect everyone and that everyone should respect him. But sadly, this was not the case. He was respected by his Mother, a washer woman. She knew everything about him. How had lived life, how he had become the way he was, and she also respected that he had an attraction towards men as opposed to women. And while she was saddened that she would not have grandchildren, she was happy that her son was true to himself. Aladdin worked with his Mother doing washing for many other men and women in the village. When Aladdin was young, he didn't have the strength to help with the washing all day, but he would play in the street until his Mother called for him. He would then take back the washing to the people who had ordered their service. The washing was carried in bundles on each end of a long pole, which Aladdin carried on his shoulders. When Aladdin was older, he was able to help with the washing, as his Mother was beginning to get old and unable to do the mass amounts she used to. But for all their efforts every day, they were very poor. It was one day that Aladdin was delivering washing that our story begins. He was on his way with the bundles when a bunch of boys stopped him. 'What have you got there Aladdin?' they asked. Aladdin, being the kind boy he was, answered. 'This is washing that I am taking back to Johan over the river.' Aladdin answered. 'Johan is an old man who wouldn't want a boy-lover like you near him.' One of the boys sneered. Aladdin was rather hurt. He was not put off telling people his true desires if it came into conversation, but he generally kept it to himself. 'I think it is none of Johan's business. Now excuse me, I have to deliver these before sun down.' Aladdin said. It was the last delivery of the day and Aladdin was looking forward to his dinner. The boys sneered and then ran off singing rude songs about Aladdin. Sighing, Aladdin kept going. He came to the bridge across the river and stopped to rest. He looked at his reflection in the water. He was handsome, like many of the other boys his age, but he knew he would never find a handsome man like himself to live with. But he still hoped that one day he would. Aladdin picked up the delivery and went on his way. When Aladdin arrived at Johan's house, he knocked on the door and Johan answered. Johan was an elderly man nearing 80 and he often paid well for services to him. He smiled when he saw Aladdin. He bid him enter and Aladdin walked in. 'Just put the clothing in the sitting room.' Johan said as Aladdin walked past. Doing as he was told, Aladdin placed the washing down and untied it from the pole. He then began to fold it and Johan started talking to him. What Aladdin didn't realize was that Johan was really a wicked magician and a retired actor. He had many plans brewing in the shadowy corners of his house, but no one ever knew he was apart of it. Johan continued to talk until Aladdin had finished folding. He then paid Aladdin two gold coins for his services. 'I would like you to come back to my house tomorrow Aladdin, for I need a strong boy like you to do something for me.' Johan said. Aladdin didn't question the old man, but simply bowed and said he would return close to midday. Johan smiled. '/There's a good boy. Now run along home. Your Mother will wonder what is keeping you.' Johan said. He showed Aladdin out and bid him goodnight. The following day, Aladdin arrived at Johan's place. Johan bid him welcome but did not invite him in. He held something in his hand. Aladdin didn't know it, but it was a scroll telling of a magical lamp. The scroll told of where the ancient cave was hidden, how to get in and only one man could enter. Johan had spent many a year solving the riddles until he worked out that Aladdin was the man who could enter it. He had a map and he explained to Aladdin he needed help in retrieving a lost treasure for the Emperor. 'Deep within this cave is a treasure that will be a wonderful gift to the Emperor for the upcoming festival.' Johan said, displaying his links to the upper classes. 'But I am too old to be able to go deep into the cave to get it. But you can. Any obstacle you can overcome.' Johan said, but stopped at the worried look on Aladdin's face. 'Fear not my boy. I have something for you. It is yours if you do exactly as I say.' Johan looked at him. 'Aladdin, this ring is yours.' The man put the ring on Aladdin's finger. The gems set into the band shined like stars and the band was nicely polished. It didn't look a day old. 'Very well Johan. I will follow your instruction.' Aladdin said. Johan looked at the map and led the way out of town towards a close range of mountains. A little while later they came to a stop. Johan said some magic words and a stone rolled aside. 'Below is the passage into the cave. You may take as much money and jewels as you can find, but what you must give me is an old lamp.' Johan instructed. Aladdin bowed and went into the cave. As he followed it, it became darker and darker. When his vision finally adjusted to the darkness, he could see clearly. Johan was right; the caves were covered in sharp edges and pointed rocks. He danced around them easily and followed the cave further on. Finally, he came to a large chamber where there were many jewels, gold coins and many chests of riches. He jumped forward, filling his pockets with money and jewels. He found a few coin bags and tied them to his belt. He then looked around. There, on a large pillar of gold was the lamp Johan wanted. It had a small flame coming out of the top that changed color all the time. Leaning forward, he grasped the handle and lowered it down. The flame turned to bright orange and lit the pathway back to the entrance. At the entry to the cave, Aladdin found Johan waiting at the top of the stairs looking very impatient. 'About time.' he snapped, his mood becoming very tense. 'Hand me the lamp.' he snarled. 'No!' Aladdin cried, suddenly unsure of Johan's intentions. 'Help me out or I will return the lamp to where I found it.' 'Very well.' Johan cried, pulling himself to his full height. 'You shall stay down there!' He said a magic word and the stone covered the entry before Aladdin could escape. Aladdin looked around. There was no other way out. He was trapped. How could he have been so foolish to trust Johan? He should have seen the trechary when he had given him the ring. He knew he could trick Aladdin by giving him riches. Aladdin felt for the ring on his finger. He rubbed the gemstones with his finger. With a gasp of surprise, Aladdin held the ring at a distance, as it had started to let out white clouds of smoke. When the smoke cleared, there stood a woman in long white robes with patterns of flowers and birds all over them. Her hair done up in a very elegant style and a fan in her right hand. 'Who are you?' Aladdin asked, staring at her beauty. 'I am the Genie of the ring. I can grant the wishes of the one who wears me.' she said. A voice unlike any other. Her tone so soft and caring, her eyes so understanding. Aladdin grabbed the lamp and said 'I wish I was at home with my Mother.' he said. The Genie opened her fan and started to bat it softly as if fanning herself, but she was not trying to cool her temperature. Petals danced everywhere. When Aladdin could see through the cloud of petals, he was in front of his house. 'Mother, I'm home.' Aladdin said. His Mother called out in response and he was sure he was home. When Aladdin came inside, he showed his Mother the many coins he had picked up and the gems and the lamp. He did not tell her of the ring just yet. 'This lamp is very dirty. But if we polish it we can sell it.' she said. She took the lamp and a rag and began to rub it. As she did so, golden clouds of smoke poured from within the lamp into the room. When they cleared, there stood another woman, her robes as magnificent as any Emperor could dream, and her hair and eyes as decorated as any entertainer could achieve. 'I am the Genie of the lamp. You can command anything from me.' she said, a wide smile on her face. 'Aladdin, we have a genie in our house.' Aladdin's Mother cried out. 'Do not worry. I am here to serve you.' she said. She raised her arms and they noticed she was carrying a parasol. When Aladdin recovered from his surprise, he looked at his Mother and then they hugged each other. 'Aladdin, we could change our lives, we won't have to work so hard.' his Mother said. When they were over their shock, they asked for many riches and for a new house of much more elegance than the one they lived in. Once Aladdin and his Mother had settled down, Aladdin looked around him. He did want things to be better for his mother, but he wasn't sure if it was right. He rubbed the lamp and the Genie appeared. 'I wish for every person in this village to receive fifty gold coins within the next day.' he said. The genie looked at him. 'I do not understand.' she said. 'I want to feel no guilt for rising above the people who were my friends. I have asked this, so please do it for me.' The Genie nodded and opened her parasol. From within, ribbons dropped one after the other and sailed out of the doors and windows. When every last ribbon had fallen, she closed the parasol and bowed. 'There you go Aladdin, your wish has been granted.' 'Thank you Genie of the Lamp, for easing my guilt.' He bowed back to her and she disappeared in another puff of gold smoke. Aladdin returned to his life with his mother, calling for the Genie when they needed her. It was some time later that Aladdin was in the street doing some work for the farmers. He was told suddenly to stop and to bow. When he understood why, he could not help smiling. The Emperor's youngest son was passing through the area. Aladdin dared a look. Sure enough, the Prince was a beautiful young man, full of life and looked ready to do battle, not to sit in a castle wearing rich and luxurious clothes. Aladdin lowered his head. That evening, he went to the lamp and summoned the Genie. 'What can I do for you today?' she asked, bowing slightly. 'I want to really test your abilities.' Aladdin said, and paused for a moment. 'I have fallen in love with the Emperor's youngest son, and I want to know if he would love me if I asked.' he said. The Genie smiled. 'I do know that the Emperor's youngest son has an attraction to boys, and maybe I can help you sway the Emeror and his son into liking you.' She bowed. 'All you have to do is say the word.' 'Genie, I wish I could impress the Emperor and his youngest son, so that they may consent to a union.' The genie nodded her head and opened her parasol. Gold smoke covered Aladdin from head to toe. When it cleared, Aladdin found he was in very nice clothing that wasn't too grand, and had two chests, each marked for who they were for. 'Go to the Emperor and offer him the chest for him, then speak of your love for his youngest son. Then he will call his son to see you. Offer him this chest, and he will love you. No spell or trick is required, because I know his desires as much as yours.' She bowed again and disappeared. Aladdin gulped, took the chests to his cart and wheeled them to the Palace. Waiting to receive the Emperor, Aladdin was very nervous, but when the door opened and the Emperor entered, he bowed down to the floor and waited to be addressed. 'Aladdin, I hear you wish to ask my favor.' The Emperor said. 'Please speak and tell me what it is you are seeking from me.' Aladdin took a deep breath and answered. 'I wish to marry your youngest son.' Aladdin answered. Aladdin brought forward the chest and opened it. Inside was a flower carved from precious stones and gold. The Emperor gasped, then took the flower and looked at it properly. He called over his shoulder that his youngest son, Sho, should be sent for at once. When Sho arrived, he looked at Aladdin and saw the young boy as a wonderful being of male beauty and fell in love. 'Sho, this is Aladdin. He has come hoping to be your partner. But it is entirely your choice. He has a gift for you.' The Emperor said. Aladdin took the other box and put it before the Prince. But he refused it. 'I do not need a gift. I am happy to have met such a young and bold man.' Aladdin and Sho left shortly to become more acquainted, and the Emperor took the box. Opening it, he smiled. The box was empty. He knew that Aladdin had been the gift, and that there was nothing more to give. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
