The event had gone pretty smoothly. Well, as smooth as a four year olds birthday will go. Children scampered around the large room as adult organized small events for the children to do or prepared food. Music played and many danced.
It was getting late the sun fading out under the horizon as servants began tidying up the mess from the children and pulling away dinner plates. Sin sat in his usual chair and watched Callie conversing with his stepmother Aisleen. He still marvelled at the site before him, no many how many times he’s seen something similar, may it be Christmas, one of their children’s birthdays… it still shocked him. It was almost like he still expected the worst to happen. Like he didn’t deserve the life he currently had.
“What’s the matter?” Sin almost jumped as Lochlan came and sat next to him at the table.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“You look a bit in a daze.” He said laughing. Sin shrugged.
“It’s still hard getting used to all this. It’s just…” Lochlan nodded.
“A lot.” Lochlan stated. Sin nodded.
“Aye.” He said. “It’s been years since me and Callie got married but I’m still not used to the idea of actually being…. Happy.” Lochlan nodded again.
“The past is hard to forget. But harder yet is seeing the future.” Sin laughed.
“You’re drunk.” Sin stated with a small smile on his face. Lochlan looked offended.
“I am not! I take offence to that!” Sin laughed.
“Aye?” He asked. “Stand up and stand on one foot!” Lochlan glared at him and stood up. He stood on one foot. “Good, now touch your nose.” Lochlan did it. “Not rub you’re stomach.” Lochlan rubbed his stomach. “Aye, you’re drunk.” Lochlan stopped what he was doing and went back into a normal standing position.
“What do you mean I’m drunk I did what you said!” Sin laughed and nodded.
“Aye and that fact alone proves my statement. You are drunk.” Lochlan shook his head and sat back down.
There was a sudden loud crash as something hit hard against the large wooden main doors of the castle. Everyone froze and looked to the door. Sin stood up and walked into the foyer before the door. He walked up to it slowly and felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see Callie behind him a worried look on her face.
“Don’t worry lass it’s probably nothing.” He said. “Take the children up to bed.” He said kissing her forehead. Callie nodded and went to gather her children, Fagan helping to take Kieran and Morgan up the stairs. There was the loud crash again.
Aisleen came and stood in the doorway of the main room along with Lochlan and a few others. Sin came up to the door.
“How did they get past the turrets?” Lochlan asked. “There’s something wrong here.” He pulled Aisleen back into the room and motioned for her to stay back. “Sin you’re sword.” Sin looked at Lochlan, he didn’t have his sword on him.
There was another loud crash and the wood of the door before him splintered. Sin’s eyes widened. “Get back!” He yelled. The people that remained at the party scattered some running for the other exits some running up the stairs. “Lochlan! Take Christine, Maggie, and and go upstairs to Callie. Tell them to hide and get me my sword!” He said. He saw Braden and Ewan come up next to him their own swords in their hands.
“Who do you think it is?” Braden asked.
“I know not.” Sin said. He couldn’t think of any enemies he still held. Not for this long. He was well known in the MacAllister’s and the MacNeelie’s. He had ties in England and in Outremer. He couldn’t think of anyone that would dare come against him. Another crash came against the door. “Braden watch the servants entrance.” He demanded.
“They are coming through here!” Braden argued. “You need my help!” Sin glared at him.
“You attack a beast from the front you stand no chance…. Surround it and you will take it down!” Sin yelled at him as the banging became louder. Braden understood what his brother meant and took off towards the servants exit.
Most of the guests from the hall where gone now leaving Sin alone. ‘something is wrong’ He said. ‘There should be someone protecting the castle,’ He said. He didn’t understand why this was happening. How these people got in. Why he was now standing alone. Standing alone with no sword yet. He watched the door as the battering ram broke through the door. It pulled out again and rammed again breaking it more. It hit one more time this time breaking the lock in the process. The door came loose and men filtered through into the hall. Sin fought against them all. He had never been taken down in his life in a fight and he this wasn’t going to be the first.
Though despite Sin’s efforts there was too many of them. And without his sword he stood no chance.
The men over powered him bringing him to the ground on his stomach and pinning his arms behind his back.
Sin struggled against his captures though he knew he was defeated.
“Well, well.” Said a man his thick English accent marring his words. “If it isn’t the great Lord Sin MacAllister himself.” He said. “Took me a good long time to find you my dear boy.” He laughed. The man crouched down in front of Sin. Sin finally got a good look at the man’s face. He didn’t recognise him. The man was maybe in his late forty’s early fifties with streaks of grey marring the sides of his black hair. It was short and almost slicked back though it stuck up slightly. He was dressed in black clothes that hung loosely on his body, not your typical English attire. It looks almost… Saracen.
“What do you want?” Sin asked angrily. The man looked up and smiled as four other men dragged Callie and her children roughly down the stairs.
Sin seethed as he watched their treatment. “Let them go!” Sin cried. It wasn’t long before another man came back in dragging a struggling Lochlan down the stairs. Sin was lifted off the ground and dragged into the main hall where he saw that Aisleen and Braden where tied up. “What do you want?!” Sin asked angrily.
“You really don’t know who I am do you boy?” The man laughed. He moved so that he was looking directly into Sin’s eyes, their noses almost touching. The man gripped Sin’s jaw tightly. “You will learn soon enough.” The man laughed as another man came up behind Sin and hit him over he head was a dull black object rendering him unconscious.
(A/N…. lets not all forget that this is 12 years after the book, Sin is now 42 and more than likely hasn’t fought much over the past 12 years so he’s a little rusty and in those days considered old already.)
