Chapter 2
Game
I shuddered as I changed into my gym clothes.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I didn’t know why the locker room had to be so damn cold, really, couldn’t they afford to put a heating in the room?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I sighed and ran out to the gym, the sooner I got moving, the sooner I would warm up. style='mso-spacerun:yes'>We ran four laps around the gym before we were given our ‘game’ for the day. class=GramE>Dodge ball. I sighed, I hated dodge ball, I didn’t really see the point in it. My father on the other hand…had a hard time holding back. I looked up to see my father standing in the corner. I was the only junior in this class, all of the junior classes had been far too full.
I slunk over to my father, waiting for mother to get out of the changing room and come over to us.
“Stick behind me kid, I’ll keep you safe.”
I rolled my eyes and leaned against my dad, letting my eyes fall closed. There were still a few minutes before the game would start, the girls were still changing after all.
“You okay?”
I jumped at my mother’s voice and looked up.
“Just…stress is all.”
“We’ll be talking about this when we get home.”
I nodded and stood straighter.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The whistle blew and I ran forward, grabbing as many balls as I could and handing them to my parents.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I held back a snicker as people went down.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Having vampire parents had its advantage, you learn at a young age that you have to be fast to keep up with them, so I was always the first one done with running and in this case, the first one to the line to get the dodge balls. I dodged to the side just as a ball whizzed past my head. The wind caused my hair to move. I could see my mother’s eyes narrow and the offending ball thrower was knocked on his butt as a ball hit him hard in the stomach.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I ran over to her, handing her a ball with a smile.
“Thanks. But…try not to kill them.”
My mother gave me an innocent smile just before the bell ringed, telling us to go change. I followed my father back to the changing room, shivering again at the cold.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I hurried so that I could avoid speaking to them but…well vampires are quite fast. They cornered me in the hall.
“What happened to ‘when we get home’?”
My heart was pounding and I could tell that my parents were getting worried.
“Why are you stressed sweetheart?”
I gulped and looked down. I didn’t want to be homeschooled again…
“For the past three years…I’ve been having…anxieties when I have my tests.”
My mother frowned.
“Why, you are smarter than most college graduates.”
I took a deep breath and looked up at the ceiling.
“It’s…well…it’s because I forget everything the second a test is laid out in front of me. But Edward knows and we’ve worked out a system. He always sits in front of me so that when we get a test, if I start to panic…well he touched his leg to tell me to calm down and…I can.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I mean it’s nothing bad.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Really it isn’t.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It’s just that I’ve had three tests today already and…”
I was quickly enveloped in a icy hug and I patted my mother’s back, kissing her cheek lightly.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Luckily close siblings would do the same thing so we had nothing to worry about if someone saw us.
“I’ll be fine, really I will.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Please don’t make me get home schooled again.”
My parents looked to one another and they sighed.
“Talk to Carlisle about it, he may be able to find a way to help with it.”
I nodded to my mother’s request and we headed to lunch.
Edward was waiting for me at the lunch table.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I sat down with my boxed lunch and looked at it before pushing it a bit away from me. Bella tilted her head to the side as she watched this and Edward simply frowned.
“Are you feeling okay Andre?”
I looked at Bella just as my aunt Alice and uncle Jasper sat down.
“I’ll be fine. class=GramE>Just a bit…nervous. I have one last test today.”
I sat up quickly, feeling relief rush through me. style='mso-spacerun:yes'>I looked at my uncle and gave him a smile of thanks.
“Don’t worry; you get an A in all of them as usual.”
I sighed in relief.
“Thanks Alice.”
Jasper let up on his influence over me.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I was feeling better knowing that I was going to pass the next test. If only she had told me this at the beginning of the day, then I wouldn’t have felt so stressed. But then again…that probably wouldn’t have helped any.
“Well…”
My mother gestured to my food and I scowled.
“Eat something or I’ll make Emmett shove it down your throat.”
He grabbed my lunch quickly and stuffed half of my sandwich in my mouth causing my family to laugh and me to cough as I tried to get the mouthful down.

I clung to my dad, snoring lightly.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Overhead the sky was getting greyer and the distant rumble of thunder was coming closer. I snorted lightly as he jumped over a log and shifted, nuzzling against his cold chest only to be dropped onto the cold hard ground.
“What the hell was that for!?”
I stood up slowly, rubbing my back.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Sometimes I think he forgot that I was mortal.
“Sorry kid, your mother’s orders.”
“I said to put him down, not to drop him on his ass!”
I would have punched him if it didn’t mean a broken hand. So I took the baseball bat and hit him hard as I could on the head. He didn’t even feel it.
“Gah!style='mso-spacerun:yes'> USELESS!”
I pouted and stalked over to where Edward and Bella where entering the field.
“What did he do now?”
“Dropped me on my ass while I was sleeping.”
Edward nodded and picked up a rock before throwing it at my father. He winced and rubbed his arm.
“Thank you Uncle E.”
I hopped over to my grandmother, tugging Bella along with me.
“You can have my job. I’m going to go…um…” Well I didn’t really know but I was going to go do something. “I’ll be in the car, sleeping.”
I jumped over to the car and got in the back, curling up and closing my eyes.
As I was just drifting off, my eyes snapped open and I got the door open before running to my family. Jasper was feeling anxiety, and he had pushed it into me to alert me to the danger. I pushed through the crowd of my family and my eyes widened. class=GramE>Vampires. class=GramE>Three of them. class=GramE>Two men and a woman. Vampires drank blood, and almost all of them drank human blood.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I was human. Bella was human. I felt my family surround me and Bella and I took her hand in mine.
I pushed her behind me, offering further protection.
I ignored the words, I couldn’t focus on them.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> My vision was swimming.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I had never seen other vampires before, ever. I had only ever seen my family.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Before I knew what was happening, I was being tugged into my father’s arms, away from Bella.
“To harm the mortal child of a vampire is against all rules.”
I looked up into the eyes of the vampires before me, the killers before me.
“But the other is fair game.”
I turned my head to look at Bella. Edward had pulled her closer. My heart started beating faster and I pulled away from my father to stand in front of the vampires. I looked at each of them, finally seeing them and my eyes widened again.
“Andre?”
I could hear my voice being called from far away.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I got adrenaline rushes a lot.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Being around vampires so much, it was my body’s own safety precaution. My fist connected hard with granite skin, and the scent of blood filled the air.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> But the blood wasn’t mine.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The blood belonged to the vampire.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> The tracker.
I needed to get their mind off of Bella, get it onto me. Edward was my best friend is no many ways. I needed to help protect the girl he loved. I knew my hand was broken, that had registered somewhere in the back of my head, but it was so far back in my brain that I felt no pain. I stood there, looking at the bleeding vampire as he brushed the blood away from his lip. The group disappeared and my father grabbed my arm.
“Are you completely crazy!?”
“No! I had to get his focus off of Bella. I’ve pissed him off now, made him bleed.”
“It was a good idea sweetie, and it worked; now we have to get you somewhere safe.”
My aunt Alice hugged me before pulling me towards the car.
____________________________________________
I looked down over the ground bellow.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I was headed towards Alaska, to the Denali coven with my aunt Alice and uncle Jasper. My aunt sat up quickly, eyes wide.
“He’s changed his plans, he’s going after Bella.”
She grabbed the phone on the front of the seat quickly and dialed Edward’s cell. My eyes widened and I closed my eyes. I looked down at my swollen hand. I was still not in pain.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I closed my hand and winced, feeling the sting. My uncle grabbed my hand, making me lay it flat and using the cold of his hand to ease some of the pain.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> It had been put in a brace by my grandfather just before we left.
“Damn IT!”
My uncle jumped a bit and rubbed my back as I leaned forward. I had failed.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Now Bella was in danger and so was my uncle. As soon as we landed we got on another plane headed back to Washington.
By the time we arrived, Bella was in the hospital and James was dead. Victoria had vanished and so had Laurent.
I sat beside my Uncle and bit my bottom lip.
“I’m sorry Edward. I…”
“It isn’t your fault. She’s alive, and so are you. That is all that matters.”
I closed my eyes and sat in my uncle’s lap.
“Are you okay? Last time you curled up with me you where nine and you had a nightmare.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Everyone else was out hunting and I was the only one around.”
“Pain medication.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I’m…high right now.”
I closed my eyes and snuggled closer to my uncle before giving a soft laugh.
“The pain is gone at least. I can’t feel my hand anymore.”
I yawned softly.
“You’ll need someone to be your scribe at school.”
I shrugged.
“What are uncles for if they can’t write for you?” Edward smiled and pressed his lips to my hair, but I was already fast asleep.
