Chapter 2
Several hours later Alice woke feeling rested, warm and safe. Her stomach growled loudly and that was what had woken her up. Her hunger. “Sorry I slept so long.” She said sleepily. “I don’t know what happened. I was just so tired all of a sudden.” She looked out the window. “Where are we?” All of the barrenness of Alaska was gone. In its place was green. Everything was green. It was beautiful.
“We should stop so she can eat.” Edward said to the others.
“Oh, you must have eaten while I was asleep.” She answered. She looked at her watch. They had been on the road for almost 12 hours. “I can’t believe I slept that long. Why didn’t you wake me for dinner?”
“We haven’t stopped.” Esme said gently. “We are all on a different sort
of diet. But we can stop for you. What would you like?”
Alice mentally calculated the money that Richard had given her. It was a large sum but not enough to start over somewhere from scratch. “Something quick and cheap.” She added with a sigh.
“You don’t have to worry about money, you know.” Edward said. “Our family has a bit.” He said this with a smile and a slight mocking tone to his voice. He made it sound like there was some joke being told that she didn’t know. Alice watched him. She took them all in.
Edward, who was driving, was handsome and young. His brownish hair was in wild disarray. His skin was pale and his eyes in the rearview mirror were a golden color. His lips were reddened and quirked as if he were trying not to smile. His body was lean, his arms and hands delicate and she could see all the blue veins under the surface.
“I don’t take money from people I don’t know, thank you. Where are we going anyway?”
“To Forks Washington, or right outside of it anyway.” Esme answered. She was a beautiful, graceful woman. Her chocolate brown hair flowed in gentle waves down her back. She had a small beauty mark beneath her left eye but it only drew more attention to her smile. Her smile was friendly and kind. She had the same pale skin and golden eyes as her son. Where Esme had her arm around Alice’s shoulder, it was like ice. Alice couldn’t believe as warm as she was, Esme could be so cold but the older woman wasn’t shivering or anything. She looked quite comfortable.
“What’s in Forks?” Alice asked. It was the boy in the passenger seat who answered.
“Our house.” He answered simply and looked back at her. His honey blonde hair had curl to it and was slightly longer than normal. He had it pushed back away from his face but she could tell it probably fell in his eyes often. His face was chiseled, his cheekbones high and hollow. He was lean but very muscular. His lips were thick and a deep red color which stood out against his pale white skin. His eyes were not the golden color of his mother and brother; his eyes were almost black. He was quite possibly the most beautiful man she’d ever seen.
Jasper tried to feel her emotions but hunger was standing ahead of everything else. Suddenly though, he felt amusement coming from Edward. He glanced over at his brother. “She’s attracted to you.” Edward said very quickly and too low for the human to hear.
Jasper recoiled in shock. A human liked him? That was in their very makeup but still. A human that was going to be around? A human who smelled so inviting? That was not going to make things very pleasant for him. Or maybe it would be okay. She did smell inviting but she also smelled calm. She smelled like the sun on a warm day. She smelled like fresh apple pie and cut grass. She smelled like all of his favorite memories of being human. He turned to look at her again but immediately noticed her eyes go out of focus. Edward slammed on the breaks instantly and yanked the car over to the side of the road.
“Edward?” Jasper asked worriedly while Esme did the same for Alice.
“Visions. She has visions. Carlisle, Rosalie and Emmet are on their way to meet us. The tracker is gone. He lost her trail after she got in the car. She sees herself living among us. One of us, but not. She remains human. She is with…oh my! That is a heck of a vision.”
Jasper watched as her eyes once again focused. He could feel the waves of fear coming off her. He sent calm to her.
“How do you know I have visions? And how did you know what I was seeing?” She asked Edward in a scared voice.
“I told you I had a gift. I can read minds. I saw your vision with you.” He answered calmly after turning to look at her. She blushed immediately remembering the last part of the vision where she and Jasper were wrapped around each other and making love. She saw Edward grin at the memory going through her mind and she blushed harder.
Jasper could feel the embarrassment and panic go through her but he had no idea what was causing it. He looked at her curiously but she wouldn’t meet his eyes. He looked to his brother for the answer only to find Edward smirking at him. “What?” He asked.
Alice could feel the panic over taking her. She had no control over the visions. It’s not like she just wanted to see her and Jasper locked in a passionate embrace, that’s just what the current future held. She frantically went over what Edward had said trying to block from her mind the vision of Jasper and herself. “What did you mean, ‘she remains human’?”
Esme looked among her sons and the girl and guess by the girls blush and Edwards smirk at Jasper that the two might become mates. It was time to diffuse the situation. “Let’s stop at that diner so she can eat and maybe we can explain things.” She took hold of the girl’s hand. “There is no need to fear us. We will not harm you. Richard called us because he knew we would take you in as a member of our family. He told us your parents put you in the asylum.” Alice nodded sadly as Edward pulled into the parking lot of a diner. He parked in front of the door and they all got out of the car. Esme walked with her arm around the young girls shoulder, comforting her in the way a mother would. The way Esme was so good at. Jasper followed behind Edward wanting him to answer what else he had seen but Edward remained silent.
