Esme stood at the edge of the cliff staring straight ahead of her. Tears were running down her face but she was making no noise; quiet and alone in her despair. All she wanted was to hold her baby boy again and see him smile up at her. What had she done for him to be taken from her so early; only two days old. She couldn’t escape the pain and loneliness that was tearing through her. She could barely draw a breath through the pain and despair that was engulfing her. This was why she was here to end this pain. with a deep breath - the first she’s taken in days - Esme stepped forward off the cliff and fell silently. Then the world went black not even the pain remained.
Carlisle moved the body of a young man he had been treating into the morgue. Sadness enveloped him because he has been unable to save the boy. The pneumonia had been to severe and claimed him after 3 long days in the hospital. Pity tore through Carlisle as he thought of the look in the boys’ parents eyes as he told them of the death of their precious baby boy. Carlisle knew that the vision of the parents grief would haunt him for quite some time. As he was placing the boy at the end of the room an orderly entered the morgue brining another body in. Carlisle sighed sadly at the loss of another life. Then as the orderly left the morgue Carlisle heard the impossible sound of a heart beating weakly.
Carlisle immediately rushed to the newcomer knowing that it was the heart in that small body that was still beating. As Carlisle looked down at the woman before him he couldn’t believe his eyes. Esme Platt. The young girl who had moved him so much when he had treated her ten years earlier for a broken leg. Her injuries were much more severe this time. Carlisle could see why she was brought straight to the morgue. There was so much damage done to her small frame; what had happened to her? Carlisle quickly looked Esme over already knowing that she was beyond a doctors skill to heal. Carlisle felt some unnamed emotion rush through him. He had to save her he could not let this beautiful woman die like this. Thankful that he was at the end of his day Carlisle very gently picked Esme up in his arms and ran her to his home outside of town.
Carlisle burst through the door of his home and straight upstairs to the spare bedroom. Hearing him come flying through the front door Edward came running into the room behind him.
“Carlisle what are you doing? Are you mad?” Edward demanded. He had still not come to terms with his new existence and could nor believe that Carlisle intended to change someone else into one of them. A vampire, immortal, deadly. You don’t have to agree with me Edward but I have to do this. I know this woman I cannot let her die like this. I just can’t. Carlisle thought at Edward as he placed his teeth against Esmes throat and gently bite into her. Carlisle let just enough of his venom enter her blood and then pulled back. Edward unable to stand what Carlisle was doing left the house quickly. Carlisle continued to bite Esme pushing venom into her pulse points trying to get enough in her to heal her extensive injuries.
Esme felt like she was being burned from the inside out. What had happened to the blissful blackness that had enveloped her. She wanted it back, wanted to lose herself in the emptiness. Why was she burning? She had not expected to feel so much pain. She screamed out against the pain that was coursing through her. She felt a cold, smooth hand grasp hers and hold it tightly.
“Esme darling it is going to be okay. The pain will pass” a gentle soothing voice that reminded her of a church chorus whispered to her. She knew that voice somehow but couldn’t place it she was too focused on the pain running through her body.
“please. Please make the burning stop” she screamed. Why was he not helping her.
“The fire will stop in time Esme. I am sorry for your pain” The calm voice sounded slightly stressed now. Was he on fire too? What did he mean it would stop? Was she burning to death? This was not how she wanted death to come. “Put it out. Please put the fire out” she pleaded.
“The fire is inside you Esme. It cannot be put out it will leave. I promise” his voice had gone back to being soothing now. Esme stopped screaming it was doing her no good and her lungs were burning now. Maybe this was her punishment for jumping off the cliff.
Esme had no idea how long the fire burned in her before it went away. But through it wall the calming voice stayed with her telling her what was happening. Telling her why she was burning and what she would be when she woke up. Did he honestly say vampire? Esme tried to concentrate on the voice instead of the pain and eventually the pain went away completely. Esme lay there quietly not wanting to open her eyes. She was listening she could hear everything. She could hear someone playing the piano downstairs and she could hear the leaves outside rustling in the gentle wind. Amazing. Then she heard someone speaking softly to hear. It was the voice that had never left her.
“Esme? Can you hear me?” Esme opened her eyes to look into a pair of familiar gold eyes.
