My phone buzzed next to my head at exactly six a.m that morning. I stretched and yawned and got up. Sammie was still sound asleep, so I pulled out my clothes and got out my notebooks and pens for school. Sammie had his blanket and books in his bag. I didn't know what he'd need and I'd have to have Aunt Lucy make a list for me. I heard the shower running downstairs and went down to see what was for breakfast.
“Sleep well?” Uncle Rob asked me.
“Wonderfully.” I smiled and took a glass of orange juice he handed me. I was trying to text my father. I needed to know about the car.
'sending you a ford 2010 ford mustang GT, color and top?' dinged in. I smiled. That was the car I'd been dreaming about since I'd heard of it when father had been on the phone with a very wealthy client.
'midnight blue, hard top.' I sent back and grinned when all he said was 'Ok'.
“Everything ready for school?” Aunt Lucy came down ruffled and tired looking.
“Mhm.” I nodded.
“Where is your father today?”
“On a plane to Helena Montana. There are some ranchers' kids that wanted to have a word.”
“Oh. Well, the kids are almost done in the bathroom.”
“Okay.” I smiled and went back up the stairs.
“Sissy!” Sammie shouted, jumping into my arms. I held the latter and breathed a sigh of relief.
“What's the matter, Sam?” I took in his teary eyes and pink face.
“Had bad dweam.” He mumbled, burying his face in my nightgown.
“It's okay now.” I handed him the barely touched juice and sat him back on his bed. That was the only place to sit, on one of our beds.
“What if I don't like the school, Sissy?”
“Well, then you know my cell number. I'll walk all the way there if I have to. Daddy checked out all the schools in the area, remember. He said that there are a lot of nice kids around here.”
“Okay.” Sam didn't look convinced, but then he recited my cell number and I smiled.
“Time to go!” Aunt Lucy dropped me off at the High School and was gone. I knew that I'd either have to walk the three miles home or take the bus. Joy. I walked into the administrative building and the women greeted me warmly.
“We heard that Calyx's daughter and son were returning to us from Florida.”
“That we are. Do I need to look threw the courses...”
“Your father sent us your transcripts. You'll be bumped up a year. Your nearly ahead of that as well. You'll be able to graduate in two instead of three.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, the schools are not all in sync down there. So, here is you schedule and map. The yellow highlighted rooms are the ones you need and the large green square is the gym. Have a great day.” I couldn't help the goofy smile I had on my face on the way out. I saw the west parking lot, the one that I was now standing in and looked around. The kids who drove were just now getting here. I saw a very old truck rumble in and smiled. I liked the 'vintage- ness' of little towns. I past a group of teens next to a red convertible and shiny silver car. I wondered if they were rich kids as well, or if they just worked. I suspected the first. I found my biology class. They hadn't yet done anything with frogs or blood. I was worried that I'd be paired with someone who knew nothing about any of this stuff.
“Hello, you must be...” She trailed the list of kids. It was a short list, maybe 15 kids total. That was different. “Sephora Allen.”
“Yes.” I smiled and handed her the slip of paper she was to sign.
“There you go. We only have one other new student, and I'd like to put you two together. Isabella Swan. She's from Phoenix AZ. She'll sit in the back.”
“Okay.” I headed over and signed my name into the front of the book. They were new books. I wondered if they'd gotten a fund for books and equipment.
Once the class was full, everyone besides my partner, we got started. A bronze haired boy sat in front of me. He kept his body still, but I could tell that he was looking back at me. I plopped the book onto the table and sighed. I watched as his body stiffened. I wondered if I had bad breath this morning. I checked and I smelled of mint and my raspberry soap and perfume. Did he not like the smell? Why the heck did I care. I rolled my eyes and took out my notebook. The door opened and the girl looked a little nervous.
“Hi, um, I'm Bella.”
“We've been expecting you. Here you are.” She handed back the signed sheet. “Your sitting right next to Sephora. In the back row dear.” She smiled at her own stupidity. I smiled right along with her. I removed my shoulder bag and tossed the rest of my hair over my shoulders. She was wearing a loose fitting tee, jeans, and a windbreaker. Sensible for this time of year. I was wearing much the same thing, Levi's, a tee and a cashmere sweater.
“We haven't really done anything yet. I have a feeling that this will be a 'rule' day.”
“So do I.” She smiled back. The boy in front of us had turned slightly and was glaring at us. His eyes were as black as the night without a moon and his face was chalky pail, like he'd been sick a lot when he was little. I smiled a little and opened the book again. I wondered how it'd closed.
“Why was he glaring at us?” Bella asked me as the boy ahead of us rammed himself threw the doors outside.
“No idea.” I smiled back and we walked to the next class. We had everything together.
“Guess they put the new kids together.”
“I guess. So, you were in Phoenix before this?”
“Yup.” She seemed happy to be here, rather than there. “You didn't live here either, judging by your tan.
“Near Orlando Florida.”
“Oh, did you ever go to the parks there?”
“Sea World, once. My little brother was only a baby.”
“Oh, so you have siblings?”
“One, Sam.”
“Oh. I'm an only child.”
“I figured.” She nodded and we walked to French.
Once the school day was up, I stood outside, waiting for the bus. “Hey!” Someone shouted. I looked around, curious on why they were yelling. It was Bella.
“Hi.”
“You wanna ride home?”
“Sure. I have to get a few things at the store though, do you mind?”
“Not at all. I have to go too.” She dug in her pocket and waved a list.
“Okay.” I climbed in and she sped off to the little grocery place in town.
“So, you flew up here?”
“Yes. My father owns this big car company and they just moved it to LA. Seems that it just keeps growing. Anyway, after Sammie was born, my mother past away. Father said that it was to tiring on me to be going to school and caring for Sammie too, so he flew with us up here and then his driver brought us here.”
“I love your jeans by the way. Where do you shop?”
“Online. Father says there is no reason to go to the boutiques when you can get all designer fashions for half off online.”
“Really?”
“Mhm. I don't think I spent over a thousand on my whole wardrobe.”
“Wow. Your hair is naturally red?”
“My mother's genes.”
“Mine too.” Her hair glinted red in the sunlight that was conveniently blinding me. We both grabbed a cart and began going around the store together. I grabbed pull- ups from the shelf of baby things and some baby enriched cookies. I e-mailed my father while I was waiting in line.
“Hi.” I greeted the women behind the counter.
“Hello.” She smiled and rang up my things.
“$56.23.”
“Okay.” I swiped the gold credit card and punched in my password. “Meet you outside?” I called to Bella.
“Sure.” She nodded and put the few things she'd gotten onto the counter and I went out to her truck. After I was done, I put the car in the holder and told father about my day. He sent an encouraging reply and told me that things would be easier once I got my car and Sammie could be with me. I smiled and opened the door waiting for Bella. She put her two bags on the seat and started up the engine.
“Do we need to pick up your brother?”
“No. My Aunt Lucy already did.”
“Oh, okay.” Bella nodded and I pointed her down the road to my house. It was only three blocks from her little white house.
“See you tomorrow?” She asked once I'd put all my things in the hall.
“Yup, bye, Bella!” I grinned and waved as she drove off.
“Sissy!” Sammie launched himself at me from the stairs.
“Hey buddy. So, how was pre school?” I asked, taking two of the bags into the kitchen. Cassie and Blaise were at the table, sulking over there work.
“It was great. There is this boy named Alex, he's super nice. And there is this girl.. I think her name is Jane. She's really cool too.”
“That's great. Was lunch good?”
“Really good. Did you make it at school?”
“No, they don't have a Home Ec's class here. Sorry.” I ruffled his hair.
“Is daddy sending a car soon?” His feet now swung to and fro as I put away the groceries and left out a few things for dinner.
“Yes. This Friday it'll be waiting in the yard.”
“Sweet!” He pumped his hand in the air and I grinned at him. He liked to just sit in the cars, thinking away. I helped him jump off the counter and he ran around the house eagerly. I handed him two cookies as he zoomed by.
I made dinner and had it on the table by six. Uncle Rob dished himself up some and Aunt Lucy turned down my offer, going for a salad in the fridge in stead. The kids also took some, but went up the there rooms. Sam and I sat alone in the kitchen, talking about the weekend.
“Only if you want to, Sam.”
“I do. I wanna check out the beach that one of the boys were talking about.”
“I'll ask my friend if she knows where it is, okay?”
“Sure.” He nodded and finished his pasta.
“All full.” I ticked his tummy.
“That was yummy. You gonna read to me?”
“Of course. I'll be up in just a minuet, okay?”
“Okay, sissy.” He'd calmed down now and I suspected that he'd fall asleep half way threw the story.
I sat up until nine that night, typing on my Blackberry, my friend Jasmine was having trouble in school.
'You are a junior you know'. I wrote back as we finished up.
'So?' She wrote back.
'You didn't ask your teachers for help did you?'
'No, you never did.' I frowned at that. I wondered why I'd put up with her junk while I lived there.
'Well, I have to go, okay. TTUL.'
'Okay, bye.' She signed off the chat room and I was the only one left. I wondered if Bella had an e-mail.
