Chapter Two
Soiree
Renesmee and Jacob took his car to the car dealerships; it would have looked odd a wolf and a woman running like lightning along the freeways. It took them all the morning to find a suitable car which met all their needs. It had to look fantastic on the outside, something individual, expensive, elegant, sleek, black. Renesmee paid with her credit card. Jacob had not known she possessed a credit card and was pretty certain Bella and Edward did not know she had one either, they wouldn’t have let her have it for long. Renesmee followed Jacob in the car to a garage he knew who were expert on modifications. Whilst Jacob oversaw the changes they were making, Renesmee played with a young dog, waiting with all the patience she could muster, she had never been too good with patience.
Most of the afternoon was spent in this way; Renesmee finally got bored and managed to get Jacob to agree to go for a walk. He followed her down onto the La Push beach, wandering towards the tidal pools.
“So, what you thinking?” Renesmee asked after a few comfortable minutes of silence between them. Jacob smiled ruefully, she didn’t want to know what he was thinking, in the last few hours he had become acutely aware of Renesmee’s maturity. Indeed, she had awakened the specific product of imprinting which for such a long time, had lain dormant, now he would never be able to be around Edward.
“I was thinking how rotten it is that your Dad can read minds, hear my thoughts.”
“Jees, tell me about it, sometimes I wish I could swear at him in my head and not get found out, no normal kid gets caught, only me.”
Jacob laughed at the simplicity of this statement,
“Haven’t you found it annoying with anything else,” he hesitated, “boys from the village and such like, he’d know if you liked someone before you did … almost.” Renesmee frowned,
“I hadn’t thought of that, but I don’t normally think about boys and if I do, I do it far away from him, could you imagine if I was seeing someone, he would know everything, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself thinking about him and he’d know.” Renesmee laughed,
“More pity to him, it can’t be pleasant inside a girls head, for a man anyway, he’s lucky he doesn’t have mums thoughts though, they are barely ever separated, she’d drive him insane.” Jacob smiled; they had reached the tidal pools and were carefully picking their way around the edges, staring with interest into the depths of the water, more than a few times Jacob caught her arm to steady her.
“You are as bad as Bella.” He scolded at one point, she only shrugged.
“So who are you dating Jake? That girl in your pack? What’s her name? Mongrel is it?” Jacob snorted at this question, she knew Leah, she had to know there was no chance he would ever go near her.
“Are you kidding me? Leah is most definitely not my type,” Renesmee waited for him to go on and confess his love for someone, everyone wanted someone.
“Nessie, I'm not dating anyone, honestly.”
“But you must like someone.” She prompted.
“Well yes but I have little chance with her at the moment, she doesn’t think of me in that way.” Bad thing to say; now she was truly interested,
“Who?” she asked with interest,
“No one you would know,” he lied quickly,
“Oh come on, it’s not one of the Denali sisters is it? They’ve been round here a few times recently and since you spend most of your time at ours I can’t imagine you’ve met someone anywhere else.”
Jacob shook his head,
“Nope not them,” she sighed,
“Not Alice or Rosalie?” she asked in sudden horror,
“No of course not,” he replied with a chuckle,
“I know … it’s that one from the Amazon, what was her name? Not Zafrina, the other one.” Jacob cut her off now; he was facing away from her, staring at the ground as he picked his way along another tidal pool edge.
“It’s not the Amazons, honestly you really wouldn’t …” he trailed off, was that a splash he’d heard. He turned to find Renesmee but she wasn’t there, now he knew what the splash had been.
“Nessie,” he called her name even as he leapt across the tidal pool to where he had last seen her, she wasn’t in the one closest to him.
He sniffed, trying to catch some of her scent, she wasn’t in the next one either but he quickly found her, she was far below the water being buffeted by a harsh tide in the next pool. Jacob dropped down the edge of the pool and swum downwards, after what seemed a terrifyingly long time his hand connected with wet cotton and he grabbed a fist full of her skirt. When he surfaced she was limp, her arms being swirled around by the tides, Jacobs superior strength was no match for the strength of the tides now and he hauled Nessie up and out. She didn’t seem to be breathing at all. He flung her over his shoulder and raced for the beach where he could lay her flat and work her chest. All the time his own heart beat faster than he’d ever felt it beat before.
“Come on Nessie, please, Renesmee please.” He forced a lung full of air into her mouth and immediately she began to breathe again, water trickled out of her mouth and into her wet hair. Her hands shook as they gripped his arms, her face close to tears as she struggled to breathe through her water corrupted lungs.
“Nessie, you ok?” he asked gently, she barely nodded, now she was alive and breathing again he checked for additional damage. Running a hand along her side and down to her knee, her skirt was hitched up on her thigh and her top had been so battered against rocks that it was torn to tatters; she had received no injuries to her vampire skin however.
“Jacob,” she whispered hoarsely, her throat stinging from the salt water she had breathed in, his eyes found her face again and his lips found hers before his logic could stop him from doing anything he might regret. She tasted of salt water and flowers, the warmth of her breathe seeping into their joined mouths. Her lips were soft and malleable; they opened as he sought to deepen the kiss, her tongue flicking forward to taste him even as he responded by tasting her. Her hands had moved now to grip the shirt he wore as though if she let go she might fall straight back into the tidal pool.
Somewhere in the deep recesses of his mind, Jacob remembered what he was doing and with whom and removed his hand from her thigh. He let her face fall away from his and she managed a small watery smile before she coughed again.
“Time to go,” he whispered, scooping her into his arms he carried her back to the garage, she was asleep by the time he sat her in her fathers new car, it was finished and ready but before they took it home to the party, he’d have to find her something to wear. His sister offered a selection of dresses for Renesmee to choose from but when he had carried her into the house she had continued to sleep in his arms, exhausted by her near death experience.
“Which one do you prefer?” Jacobs sister asked finally when she could see Renesmee wasn’t going to wake and choose one,
“The red one, it will go beautifully with her dark hair and pale skin,” she nodded and ushered him out of the room. He didn’t know how she managed to wake her but when she suddenly came round with a scream of annoyance he decided it was best not to ask. She emerged some fifteen minutes later, Jacob had returned to his living room to watch the baseball with his Dad. He didn’t look away from the television screen when she walked in, it was only when she coughed loudly that they turned to look at her standing in the doorway. She was bathed in a halo of light from the room behind her, the light of the television sparkled in her clear eyes and her pale face held two rosy cheeks. Her full lips had been painted a red to match the knee length red dress she wore; one pale shoulder was unadorned whilst the dress was held up by a strap across the other shoulder. She wore a pair of black shoes borrowed from his sister as well.
“You look beautiful Renesmee,” Billy spoke from his wheelchair closest to the television. Jacob was finding words impossible; his thoughts were mixed between the kiss they had shared and the sight of her now.
“Wonderful,” he choked out, then he got up quickly and pulled her towards the car,
“Bye, thanks,” she called just before he shut their front door.
They were running late now and Alice would not appreciate them being late for her soiree. She hated when something didn’t go to plan for her parties, luckily she would be able to tell they were going to be late, she had ways of seeing round the invisibility of spirit wolves now, it wasn’t 100% effective but it was good.
“Slow down,” Renesmee groaned, she had been rather hoping she could avoid this soiree but since it had originally been her idea and she had been sure to give Alice as little time as possible to organise it, she hoped it wouldn’t be too over the top.
Renesmee groaned when she caught sight of the driveway, brilliant lights had been placed to read, HAPPY BIRTHDAY RENESMEE, what didn’t she understand about subtle?
“Nice,” Jacob muttered, he was concentrating on everything but the beautiful siren sat next to him, it was hard enough that in his peripheral vision he could see her pale, smooth legs neatly crossed and angled to accommodate the heels she wore.
“I hope she hasn’t invited any extras, I made sure to do the invites so she wouldn’t get too big on me.” Jacob chuckled,
“You can dream.” She punched his arm, to which he objected,
“Ow, you know it’s true.”
The porch was not so well decorated and hope sprang within Renesmee, normally it was much worse than this, all Alice had done was leave an arch of flowers twined with little lights. Jacob drove Edwards new car round into the garage where they were met by Edward, Bella, Alice and Jasper.
“What happened?” Edward snarled, he was fiercely over protective sometimes. Jacob sighed, his thoughts had betrayed him again, he’d been thinking about how much better Nessie seemed to be since the croaky voice when she’d nearly drowned and here he was waiting. Renesmee took only a fleeting moment to realise to what her father was referring and placed a gentle hand on his arm. She only showed him the parts she wanted him to know, she kept her memories of the kiss to herself, these she would revisit later when she was alone and he was not able to listen. Jacob however, was less able to keep these thoughts away and Edward was startled by an image of his daughters thigh, skirt hitched too high on her thigh.
“You …” he was seething with rage, this was the day she turned seven, seven years since she had been born and Jacob had first imprinted upon her.
“Today, how could you? Haven’t you any restraint?” He growled low in his chest,
“I was checking her for injuries, nothing happened,” both Renesmee and Jacob were doing remarkably well keeping the kiss from their thoughts, it was long enough for Bella to step in and calm the situation.
“Ssh Edward, leave it, look what they bought you,” she indicated the car now. Edward was almost instantly calmed and he turned to inspect the newest car to the family collection.
“It’s …” he faltered visibly, “on fire.” He finished.
Renesmee grinned at her father,
“You like it, I thought since you needed a new car after I … well best not go into that, I got it for you, I thought you might like if I … ‘pimped’ it out for you.” Edward blinked many times, he didn’t need to, but he thought that if he covered his eyes several times it might disappear or better still, go back to normal, she had painted flames along the sides.
“Look inside,” Renesmee instructed, Edward bent his head in the driver door, Renesmee flicked the lights, against the garage they read words not just plain light.
“Daddy’s Car!” Edward couldn’t hide the horror in his voice, he knew they wouldn’t show so clearly all the time but he couldn’t be seen with headlights declaring the car to belong to ‘Daddy’.
“Its … great,” he managed, this was too much and Alice and Jasper collapsed onto the floor, slumped under uproarious laughter.
Bella’s face was a picture of calm; she waited until Edward had thanked Nessie and returned to the house to escape the sight of the car before she too joined the heap of people crying with laughter. Jacob had found the cure to his wandering mind, he would have to concentrate on the expression on Edwards face all night to keep him occupied, it wouldn’t be too hard. Renesmee watched them all from where she was leant against the car; her eyes spoke volumes for her lack of amusement.
“Sorry Nessa,” Bella used the other nickname she had coined for her daughter,
“Its fine mum, I’m only worried that he won’t actually use it now, he hasn’t heard the music selection or seen the stickers yet either.” They managed to collect themselves then and Alice returned to the matter at hand.
“Right, your party, are you going to make an appearance?” Nessie groaned but followed her into the house.
As she had suspected she had invited extra people, half of La Push was there. The entire sixteen spirit wolves were assembled, although some of them looked a little less thrilled to be there, Leah included, although she did chat with Rosalie with almost perfect civility. Emmett crushed Renesmee in his arms as soon as she had stepped through the door, Carlisle and Esme waved from by the piano were they were talking with Tanya and Kate enthusiastically. Bella hugged her daughter round the shoulders and whispered in her ear for only her to hear,
“You look breathtakingly beautiful tonight my darling,” Nessie chuckled,
“Yeah right,” Bella smiled and flicked her wrist towards Jacob who was trying very hard to think about Edwards face in the garage and not Renesmee, in doing so he was unable to breathe for concentration. Then she flicked her wrist across the room to another pair of eyes which were glued to her daughters face.
“Who is he?” Renesmee didn’t ask this aloud, she knew it would be heard by him, he was obviously a vampire, instead she posed the question in her special way. Bella shrugged,
“I think his name is Bryant, he came with the Denali, a friend of Kate and Garrett.” Renesmee nodded but was unable to enquire further as she was commandeered by Charlie.
“Hey Grandpa,” she greeted him,
“Oh Nessa, you have grown so much, I can not believe you were only born seven years ago,” Nessie smiled, her poor human grandpa who hated that he was involved in such weird and confusing stuff.
“I know, I remember it so clearly, how have you been, sorry I haven’t visited in a while, after I crashed the Porsche Daddy wouldn’t let me out for a while.” Charlie laughed,
“I know, he asked me how he should punish you for this one,” this didn’t anger Renesmee, she only chuckled and muttered dryly,
“Thanks.”
Throughout the evening she drifted between conversations, sometimes joining in and sometimes just listening. She often caught the eyes of the vampire she had still not been introduced to, he watched her constantly.
“Kate, Garrett, thanks for coming,” she hugged her friends warmly, they still paused at the sound of her beating heart after seven years of knowing of her odd parentage and her even odder situation because of it.
“You gave in to Alice then?” Kate asked with a wry smile, no one could mistake Alice’s decorations, they were very … individual. She had set vases of flowers on every step of the staircase and at intervals around the room. She had hung chandeliers with real candles from the lights and sheets of coloured linen hung from the corners of the ceiling to break up the plain walls. She had also created a wonderful buffet for the humans amongst the party, Renesmee preferred blood but she wasn’t adverse to some of the tit-bits that were on offer.
“I always intended to let her do it, I just needed to give in at the last minute so she couldn’t go too overboard, it was hard hiding my decision from her so well.” Kate chuckled.
“She rang me last week to rant about it, she was devastated with some of your plans, she was quite put out.” Kate divulged this information quietly, if Alice heard she wouldn’t be happy at her sharing this.
“Oh really,” Renesmee laughed with them.
“Ah Bryant,” Garrett looked past Nessie then and with an almost human response, Renesmee’s heart began to beat too fast.
“Nessie may we introduce our friend Bryant, he has been staying with us for a few weeks, Alice said he would be welcome, Bryant this is the birthday girl, Renesmee.” Garratt smiled innocently at her, he could obviously hear her heart but he spared her the embarrassment of mentioning it. She slowly turned to meet her newest acquaintance and was startled by how close he stood to her.
“Pleased to meet you and I hope you are having a wonderful birthday.”
His smile was easy and disturbingly wonderful, she was caught; her eyes locked on his face and unable to move from there.
“Please to meet you as well, I'm glad you could come,” she mumbled slightly, after all she was half human, what could she do about the occasional embarrassed mumble.
“Would you like a drink?” he asked, she nodded, the drink he handed her was not what she had been hoping for, she didn’t like wine particularly but she didn’t grumble.
“Are you hungry? Would you like some food?” she offered quickly, searching for something to say in the sudden silence. He raised an eyebrow in confusion; she knew he was a vampire so why offer food,
“No thank you, I don’t eat,” he gently reminded her, she cursed herself inwardly,
“No of course not, sorry, would you excuse me, I need some air,” she turned without waiting for an answer. He followed automatically and she didn’t argue as he closed the French window, closing the party into the room behind them.
“So you are a friend of Garrett and Kate,” she offered as a conversation opener,
“Well, Garrett mostly, but I know them both, I used to travel with Garrett for a while.” Renesmee nodded,
“They are lovely people, they met when I was born, they came to protect me from the Volturi, you probably heard.” Bryant laughed, it was a gentle sound which appealed to Renesmee, it reminded her of times of exceptional happiness.
“I think it would have been hard not to hear about it, everyone knows the story of the discovering of half vamp children. Everyone knows your story Renesmee.” She shuddered at the resonance in his voice as he spoke her name and couldn’t help the blush which crept to her cheeks in the darkness.
“It is strange to hear the heart of someone who appeals to me not as a meal but as something else entirely.” He placed a hand two inches from her chest and smiled into her eyes; she was drowning in his amber eyes. With a start she realised he was more like her family than she knew, he had the amber eyes of a ‘vegetarian’ vampire.
Inside the party Jacob was searching for Renesmee, she had disappeared only a few moments ago but he hadn’t seen where she had gone. When he spotted her through the French doors, she was pushed up against the wall of the house with Bryant, the new vampire he had been introduced to over an hour ago. Bryant’s hand was travelling up her leg, hitching her skirt as it moved but releasing it with practiced reserve, his mouth was kissing her throat. Renesmee was slumped against the wall, head tilted back at an angle and mouth open as she panted slightly with the thrill his lips were inspiring in her marble skin. Jacob could not and would not move, his mind was whirling, he couldn’t do anything, she had to fall in love with him and he wouldn’t force her. He may have imprinted but she was a free spirit, she shouldn’t be hurt by his jealousy or his broken heart. Suddenly the kiss at the beach was in his thoughts unbidden, how could she do this? Four hours ago she was kissing him, now she was kissing this stranger she had never met before. He was a vampire. Bella all over again, but this time worse because Renesmee was the sun to his bleak world.
“I’m so sorry Jacob,” Edward meant it with every cell of his body and every second of time he would face in his life. Jacob shuddered once and turned away from them, he looked into Edwards face for a few seconds before he fled. He was a wolf before he shut the front door behind him. His quick departure, only a few metres from where Renesmee and Bryant stood, was not felt by them at all, their minds and bodies were somewhere other than this party. Edward sighed, Jacobs thoughts would have angered him had he known earlier of the beach kiss, but these thoughts he could not feel anger for, his uneasy friend was in pain, great pain. Renesmee had no idea that the heat she was feeling now was burning Jacob.
Well … that flowed out of me too easily, I am quite surprised, I almost hate myself for doing that to Jake though, because I really really like his character. Please tell me what you think; I love reviews, even if it’s just ‘Cool’ and nothing else. Thanks guys!
