Author notes: Some of this is based on real history, but keep in mind I altered dates and such. To answer a review.Yes, this is a Twilight plot. This is just his past, I'm working my way up to the books where he meets Bella, etc. Thanks for the reviews and my apologies for taking this long to update. Just to warn some people, The N word is used once, I apologize in advance if anyone is offended. Robert is in a way racist, it was just to give you a glance on how his character is as a peron. Jasper on the other hand has opposite views.

It was an idiosyncratic feeling being in a dead soldier’s uniform. The scent of the previous owner still lingered. The dark navy blue coat that clung to his body made him feel like a traitor. But this was what needed to be down to assure their survival. The night progressed with an eerie quiet as the two men walked on in silence. Neither felt the need to talk about what had just occurred. They weren’t murderers. This was war and people died in war. Their actions were justified.
Jasper’s body was tense and on guard. He expected something to come at him at any moment. Robert’s blood stained hands gripped his rifle so tightly his knuckles were white. He was ready to shoot anything and ask questions later on. A loud branch breaking brought both of them to alert. They paused waiting to hear another sound. Robert crouched down and hid in a thicket of bushes while Jasper pressed his body into a nearby tree. The sound of a man pissing made him grimace. Yes, this wasn’t a very good evening as far as Jasper was concerned.
Turning his head slightly, he could see the dark navy suit with brass buttons tailored to it, another union soldier and by the looks of it, a high ranking one. “Captain Grant, Burks and Taylor haven’t reported back yet sir.” The boy who addressed the Captain looked no older than a 12 year old. “They were chasing that Confederate through the woods last time I saw’em, sir.” The man didn’t answer; quickly he finished up and looked at the boy. “I don’t give a fuck where those two are, I told them not to do it and if they got captured it’s their own damn fault.”
Captain Grant grabbed the boy by the scruff his neck and shoved him back towards their camp. “Let’s go, it wouldn’t be good to be caught out here.” Once their voices had faded away, Robert moved towards Jasper. “Dammit, I had the best damn shot and I didn’t take it.” He smacked the butt of his gun against the tree in frustration. “That was a good thing you didn’t, can you imagine all them rushing over here from their camp with their rifles in hand. We’d be dead as dogs in a heartbeat.” Jasper shook his head. It wouldn’t have helped them to die like fools.
“It’s best if we just go the hell out of here and meet up with the others. We can tell them where the camp is.” Robert nodded dejectedly and followed Jasper as they quietly circled around the camp. Jasper knew all he should be thinking about was Robert and him living to see another day, but that wasn’t the case, his mind just kept going back to Katherine. Did she miss him as much as he missed her? He longed to be at home with her in his arms under a pecan tree. This was what he wanted though, to make a name for himself and to serve his country.
“Jasper, do you reckon we’ll beat them?” Robert sighed pulling Jasper away from his thoughts. “It just seems so unlikely that we will. You have them with all their soldiers and even those Niger troops.” Robert looked angry and gripped his gun. “After all we did for them, giving those colors a purpose and they just up and leave us. We wouldn’t be in this mess if they had just done their work in the fields.” Jasper didn’t know what to say to that. He knew Robert didn’t like colored folk and was somewhat disgusted. Was that the only reason he was fighting?
It seemed like a horrible excuse to go off to war. If he was just fighting to keep slaves then Jasper didn’t think he should have even enlisted. But wasn’t that why this war was started? He heard a small voice say in the back of his mind. He shook his head, those weren’t the reasons he was fighting and never would be. He just wanted a career in the militia and perhaps enter into politics. Governor of Texas, how amazing would that be? He assumed Katherine would love being the Governor’s wife. “…I hate them; the Union is using them to butcher us. They’re a bunch of no good hypocrites, they hand them their own platoons. They talk about working side by side but do they? No sir, they just like to feel all high and mighty.” Robert pressed on. Jasper hadn’t even notice he was still talking. “I don’t think we should fret about, Robert.” He cut him off. “This is war and all’s fair in war. I’d just take pride in the fact that it takes only one of us to kill 4 of them. We’re against the odds and we’re handling our own.”
That ended the conversation. Dawn was just about to break when they had finally managed to make it to the camp. Just before going in, they changed back into their confederate uniform and stuffed the Union ones in a bush. Once they entered the camp all eyes fell on them. Most curious while others were on guard, one of them that were staring at them quickly rushed off to get the colonel.
“Well now, what do we have here?” The colonel’s voice was strong. It reminded Jasper a little how his father sounded. “Sorry sir, but we’re the only survivors from out platoon. We got ambushed and heard ya’ll were around the area before it happened.” Jasper took the lead before Robert could speak. Not that he was even going to. Robert wasn’t the sort to want to handle higher ranking officers.
“I see,” The Colonel looked at them. His graze following every detail he could. “I’m Colonel George William Patricks.” He extended his hand and gave both boys a firm shake. “Why don’t you two come into my tent and give me a full briefing.” Colonel Patricks motioned for his second to follow as they entered his tent.
-3 years later-
Major Whitlock stood on the Galveston shore glaring at the U.S Navy boats in the harbor. They had managed to keep this base away from the Union ships for over 14 months. The Union commander Renshaw sent a messenger to deliver a message asking for their complete surrender. A response was demanded within an hour and if Jasper knew Colonel Cook, he would basically tell them to fuck off in the politest way possible. It just infuriated Renshaw into sending even more boats. Mortar boats, he was prepared to destroy the entire city. Innocents were going to die, but the done side to surrendering was the Union soldiers were more than willing to abuse south sympathizers and especially the women.
Jasper turned around and walked back into Colonel Cook’s office as the Union soldier by the name of Burns tried to persuade the Colonel. He was having none of it and had the soldier sent back to his ship. The young Naïve Burns had managed to convince Commander Renshaw to give him a week to convince Cook to surrender. A day had already past and this was getting serious.
“Major Whitlock,” Colonel Cook pulled out a box of cigars and grabbed one. Jasper shook his head when offered and just sat down. “I sure as hell don’t plan on letting them get their hands on our people.” He ranted lighting the cigar. “I have a plan, now I can bullshit this Burns for another four days but I think it’s in all of our best interest to evacuate this town. We’ve managed to hold it but just barely, we’re pressed then and there isn’t much more we can do.”
Jasper frown but didn’t disagree. The town’s people lives were more important than holding onto an already fallen base no matter how much he longed to fight for it. It had been 3 years since he first enlisted and all his views had changed. He no longer was fighting for a respectable name; he was fighting because he owed it to his follows who died, his brothers. In the last 3 years, many changed had occurred. His mother died from a heart attack. That had nearly killed Jasper, all he had were letters written back and forth. Each letter was like a small goodbye, the life of a soldier was never guaranteed.
He doubted either him or his mother so her dying before him coming. But it left a little ache none the less. Katherine had been arranged by her father to marry her cousin about two years ago when he last heard from her. He knew she probably had a few kids by now and was married. If she was happy, he didn’t know and refused to care. His comrade and best friend Robert had died. Not in the way he wanted to go either. He knew Robert wanted to die in a fight, with guns and cannon fire blasting.
But sickness was a silent Killer and he didn’t go blazing in glory.
Looking up at his Colonel, Jasper nodded. “We should evacuate everything, sir. The weapons, the supplies and all of the people that is willing to leave.” He stood and walked over to the window. “We should start this evening; we can all be gone by the 4th day.”Colonel Cook nodded. “Tonight then, I suggest you go get some rest now, soldier, you have a big night tonight.”
“Yes, Sir,” Jasper saluted before moving towards the door. “Whitlock,” The Colonel said. “It was a pleasure serving with you.” With that said, Colonel Cook went back to his cigar and Jasper went out the door.
