I knew people were looking at me as I got out of the truck in front of Jacob’s house. I couldn’t blame them - his people really hated vampires. The sun shone down on my skin and when my appearance didn’t change, they grunted and walked away, satisfied that the treaty hadn’t been broken. I knocked on the door and smiled sheepishly at Billy when he opened it. He didn’t look surprised to see me. I guess Dad had told him that I was coming back. He rolled out passed me and down the ramp to the driveway. “Go inside,” he said, gruffly. “Jacob will be back in a few minutes.
“Yikes,” I thought. “Hello to you, too.” I wondered how cold Jake’s reception was going to be. I sat down on the old couch in the living room and crossed my arms in front of myself, feeling cold and lonely. If Jake was mad at me, then I was going to go back to my mother and stay in Florida. The front door swung open and Jake filled the doorway for a moment before he stepped in. Billy must have told him that I was here, because he didn’t look surprised. His face was tight, like he was trying hard to keep any emotions from showing. I wasn’t sure what he was thinking or how he felt. “Hi,” I said. “Hi,” he replied. He folded his strong arms across his big chest. He looked healthier than he had months ago... he was bigger and stronger. He looked great. “I uh... I just came to say hi,” I said, feeling stupid. I felt small next to him and I wasn’t sure how welcome I was. “Hi,” he smiled. A chuckle rumbled in his throat, but he didn’t move any closer to me. “How’s Florida?” “Warm,” I said. I felt nervous and I didn’t like it. I shouldn’t have come here; his people hated me and I didn’t blame them. I’d been awful to Jake. “Are you hungry?” he asked, moving passed me to go to the kitchen. “I think I’ll barbeque some burgers while I have the chance. If anyone lights a barbeque on the reserve, everyone turns up, but they’ll stay away while you’re here. It suits me just fine; I’m a lot hungrier than I used to be.” I winced at his words. I didn’t want people to stay away because of me. I didn’t want to feel even more lonely. I watched as he took some raw, ground beef from the fridge, mixed in some barbeque sauce and a couple of eggs, and shaped it into patties. Jacob put them on a plate, gathered some things on a tray and went outside. I followed him out onto the deck and watched as he lit the barbeque. “You can sit down,” he said, nodding to a chair. “Your muscles are bigger,” I said, trying not to look at him, when that was the only place my eyes wanted to go. “Yeah,” he said. “I feel better than I ever have in my life. I love spending time with the pack; it’s been good for me.” My stomach rumbled as the burgers cooked. They smelled amazing. I hadn’t realised I was hungry. “So he never even bothered to look for you, did he?” Jacob said as he flipped the meat. I hung my head in shame. “No,” I whispered. “You were right.” Jacob was silent for a minute and we listened to the meat sizzling. “I didn’t want to be right, Bells,” he said. “I wanted you to be happy. I still do.” “I’m so ashamed, Jake,” I sighed. I’d done so much crying already that I didn’t think that anything could set me off anymore. “I can’t believe that I nearly... nearly...” “Nearly threw everything away for an asshole,” Jake finished. “Yeah,” I said. “I wish I could do a lot of stuff over. I wouldn’t have been so stupid.” Jake flipped the burgers. “This is great,” he said. “Usually, there’d be five other guys crowding around here like vultures, all trying to eat my supper.” He went back into the kitchen and came out with some buns and cheese. He put two buns on the upper rack to toast and looked out at the water. “So what would you do differently if you had the chance to do it over?” he asked. I sighed and leaned back in my chair, enjoying the smells of the barbeque and of the fresh air. He didn’t seem mad, but I was still uneasy. I didn’t know if he was just being nice or if he really wanted me to still be his friend. I thought for a minute about all of the things I regretted doing.“I never would have cut my parents out the way I did,” I said. “I really hurt them.” “Yes, you did,” Jake said. “And I never would have agreed to run away with a guy I barely knew... You know, Jake, the longer I was away from Edward, the better I felt. After a while, none of it made sense anymore. I feel more like myself now than I have in a long time.” “That’s what vampires do,” Jake shrugged. “They steal your life a little at a time.” He flipped a burger into a bun, added some cheese and set it back on the rack for a minute to make it melt. “I would have treated you differently, too,” I said. “Oh?” Jake raised an eyebrow, but kept his eyes on the meat. “I wouldn’t have pretended not to notice when you flirted with me,” I said, sadly. “I would have spent more time with you. I would have gone to all the bonfires you invited me to.” “Yeah, those are pretty great,” Jake said with a note of bitterness. I could picture myself snuggling into that big chest of his, in front of a fire, listening to the laughter and chatter around us. I could picture myself leaning up to kiss his olive chin. I could picture him loving me. “I wouldn’t have let you slip past me,” I said. I looked away, suddenly shy and tired. A big hand appeared in front of my face, holding a cheese burger. A second hand held a lump of raw meat. “Which do you want?” he asked. I reached for the burger. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
