CHAPTER TWO
GIFTS
I could hear the patter of rain against my window, and the thunder rumble in the distance. I opened my eyes glancing around the cramped room, it took a disorientating minute to realise where I was. I groaned as I threw my blanket off and made my way to the kitchen. David was already up and making breakfast. The smell of French toast engulfed my sense of smell and my mouth stated to water.
“Thank god! I’m starving” I flopped into one of the uncomfortable chairs and put my hands under my chin resting the weight on them.
“Good morning to you too” David said with a chuckle. He placed two slices in front of me while he took his plate that held eight. It didn’t take me long to devour it but we both finished our breakfast at the same time.
“You went shopping?” I asked even though the answer was obvious.
“Yeah, well I woke up early so I thought I’d make myself useful” he said with a smile. “So now you could make yourself useful and clean the dishes” a cheeky smile crossed his face as he handed me his empty plate. I just glared at him as I took it. “Oh and don’t forget the pan” he finished with a chuckle. I rolled my eyes as I placed the dirty dishes in the sink and began to fill it with water.
“I was thinking, you know how we’re going to meet this La Push pack” I keep my eyes on the plate I was scrubbing with a little too much intensity. “Well I just thought that maybe I shouldn’t go”
He started to argue but I turned and raised a dripping hand to stop him. “Just think about it this way. Were not quite 100 percent sure I’m supposed to know this high and mighty secret right? I think it would be easier if they didn’t find out I knew the first time they meet you.” I turned back to the dishes waiting for his answer.
He seemed to think it through before he came to his decision. “Mmm... I guess you’re right. I mean they are going to figure you know anyway. It’s not like it was your fault you happened to be there. He eyes unfocused as I presumed they were lingering over the memory I thought of just yesterday.
“Yeah but maybe your first meeting wouldn’t be such a great idea” I turned to see him nodding. “Anyway I was thinking about going to get a few things for around the house, maybe go to the convenience store” I was making a mental list of things we would need. I was sure that by the time I got home I would be exhausted and crossed my fingers that by the time I got home they wouldn’t be here.
I usually don’t judge books by its covers, but I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from these group of boys. I’m sure they would welcome David with open harms seeming as he was a part of their family . Blood rushed to my cheeks due to my anger, so what, now they had a claim over him just because he was a ... werewolf. I shivered at the thought; a werewolf, my brother. Why him? I sighed, I knew the answer already.
I didn’t hold her to blame though, I mean how was she to know that Joshua Uley was a werewolf. I did look down on her for the fact that he was married at the time. Gee I wonder what the town must think; little Miss Slut’s daughter returns to the place she left behind bringing havoc just like our mother did to the Uley family. The sides of my mouth pulled down. I wonder what would happen at school. My stomach did a flip at the thought, I groaned. I just added another thing to worry about.
I put the now dry dishes away and turned to get changed in my bedroom, if there was any room. I pulled my jeans on and a think white sweater. I looked outside and it was still raining, so I pulled my raincoat off its hanger, I guess I didn’t really think of the fact I would have to walk in the rain. This sent my spirits down. I made my way to the small bathroom already filled with my toiletries. I looked in the mirror and gasped at my appearance. Oh God I was such a mess. I grabbed my hair brush and started brushing my long straight black hair till it looked acceptable. I quickly applied some mascara that brought out my hazel eyes not bothering with any foundation; I had never found the need for it, my skin had a healthy bronze tint. Quite happy that I looked acceptable to be seen in public I walked out of the bathroom and into the kitchen.
“David I’m off did you need-“I stopped in the empty kitchen. “David?” I turned to see if he was sitting in the living room, but nothing. I jumped as the front door opened, and David appeared with a huge grin.
“What?” His grin made me weary as if he was keeping something from me.
“Mom’s house warming gift has just arrived” His smile only got bigger and he chuckled at my questioning gaze. He opened the door a little wider showing a silver car parked out the front of the house.
My jaw fell open. “She gave us a car?” I knew she didn’t buy it, probably Joe thought it was a good idea. Joe Bronson, my stepfather, I had to admit he was a good guy, high paying job too. I guess its true; lawyers do make good money.
“Well technically it’s yours” he said with a smile. My jaw only fell open more widely.
“I have a car, my own car” I was defiantly ringing Joe to thank him a million.
“It’s an Audi A5 sport too, nice car” He looked at me with a smile. “It’s all yours” he threw me the keys and I caught them, still in shock. It passed quickly.
“Well I’ll see you later” and I bolted out the door out to admire my silver car and take it for a test drive. “Oliver’s going to be so jealous, hrm... remind me to ring him later” I knew I didn’t need reminding. I smiled one last time at my mammoth sized brother before I ducked into my car.”Let’s see what you can do baby” I whispered to myself. I sped down the dirt road re-running my errands list in my mind.
FAMILY PACK
DAVIDS POINT OF VIEW
I watched the silver car until it disappeared down the road laughing to myself. She was never going to let me drive it; I’d probably have to sneak out to give it a drive. Annabelle could be so stubborn about things, but that was her. I smiled to myself, I was lucky. Lucky that I had a sister like her, who would drop her life in New York to be with me. I couldn’t help but see myself as being selfish, but she insisted as well, it didn’t improve my guilt though. I turned to walk into the house; it wasn’t so bad, cosy even. I shut the door behind me feeling a sudden loneliness.
I was nervous. What would they say to me? Would they accept me? I knew they couldn’t turn me away but still my nerves didn’t improve.
I still couldn’t believe it though. Me, a werewolf? The thought sounded so crazy, but it was true. My mother had been frantic as she had come home to find her daughter trying to calm down this huge creature in her living room. She screamed and screamed until Annabelle had clamped her hand over her mouth, but it only muffled them. Annabelle hurried through what she has just seen, and a look of horror crossed my mother’s face. “That’s impossible” she mumbled to herself. “There just stories, stupid stories, Joshua...” A glimpse of realisation struck her features but she turned on her heels towards the phone book. She flicked furiously through it until she found what she has been searching for. Pulling out her phone she dialled a number, and stood perfectly still as it rang. I was surprised I could hear the ringing on the phone.
“Hello? Billy?” my mother tried to keep her voice clam but not really accomplishing it.
“Who’s this?” the old husky voice answered.
“Its Ayelan, listen-“she tried to continue but the voice cut her off.
“Ayelan how dare you ring me, how dare you speak to any of us again” his voice suddenly louder and angry.
“BILLY BLACK THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME THIS IS ABOUT MY SON, WHO AT THIS MINUTE CANT SPEAK TO YOU BECAUSE HE WOULD BE BARKING!”
I had never in my entire life heard my mother yell, yet alone scream he lungs out. The man grew quiet. “You have to send him here” and the phone went dead. She put the phone on the table and looked up at me and Annabelle. “I’m so sorry” she began to weep. Annabelle put an arm around her shoulders saying nothing. I don’t remember what exactly happened next but I took many deep breathes trying to calm myself, thinking about being able to comfort my mother just like Annabelle was. They both gasped as they looked at my naked form that lying on the floor. Annabelle only rushed to my bedroom to grab some clothes and sit by my side. We both looked at our mother and couldn’t help but give her a questioning look.
Knocking broke through my silent thoughts. My heart picked up, I tried to calm myself knowing they could hear it. I moved slowly to answer the door. It creaked as I pushed it open slowly revealing a tall well built man, hair cropped back wearing only a pair of sweatpants, knowing he wasn’t cold, just like I was.
“Sam Uley” he held out his hand.
I never thought of having a brother, in the sense of blood related, half brother technically. I grasped his hand shortly letting my hand fall to my side. I understood the topic our father was one we weren’t going to have a conversation about, and I was quite happy about that.
Another three men emerged from the trees looking almost identical to Sam, only their hair length was different.
“This is Paul, Jarred and Jacob” pointing out each of the men behind him. I just nodded not trusting my voice. “I understand you must be very confused, it would be easier to ... communicate in our other form.
I tensed my body, I had been resisting the urge to change for a whole week, making sure I kept my emotions in check, and now they wanted me to change, just like that. He must have read my reluctance or my fear, I couldn’t tell.
“I understand that your wary but it will make you understand much quicker, we can fill you in on everything in a matter of minutes” I didn’t know what my facial expression expressed, but it must of been confusion. “You can hear us all in your head, our thoughts, our experiences, everything.” He stated as if to clear my confusion, I think he only made it worse.
One of the boys sighed; Paul was the guy’s name I think. “Maybe he is thick or retarded” A smug smile ran across his face.
That’s all it seemed to take, anger flushed through me tinting my vision red, I started to vibrate as my body shook, and the terrible ripping sound emerged from me. My clothes lay in ruins at my feet. Sam glared at Paul giving him a warning glare. They all began to undress, and before I knew it I was in the presence of another four werewolves, but not just their physical presence, their mental presence too. Sam was right it only took a few minutes to make me understand everything, understand why and how. In those few minutes I understood I wasn’t alone anymore, I had my family there for me, and I didn’t just mean Annabelle.
I started running letting go for the first time, and it was the best feeling. I didn’t run alone they followed, and I heard more voices, greeting me, welcoming me; Embry, Quil, Brady, Colin, Seth and Leah. Leah? Leah’s a girl.
‘Well spotted’ she hissed.
I instantly thought of Annabelle. No she couldn’t, could she?
A murmur of growls followed in my mind. She knows? Sam questioned.
A replayed the memory for them. Knowing instantly that they were impressed at how calm I had been the first time I ‘phased’ -as they called it -and at how calm Annabelle had been.
I guess there was no way around it , Sam murmured. At least you didn’t hurt her. A flash of a girl, three horrible scars trailing down one side of her face... but Sam refocused his thoughts. We will have to talk to her and just make sure you keep your emotions in check around her. We don’t want another accident. Another flash of the other girl and the sense of regret and guilt emitting from Sam.
“Welcome to the pack” they murmured.
A/N soooo watcha think? Let me know. And im sorry, im just getting ‘into’ the story in thr first couple chapters. I hope they arnt dull.
