Chapter 1 ~ Earlier that day
Dakoda sat on a crate beneath a small tree, gratefully accepting the dipper of water that was offered to him by one of the eager-to-help children. He was eager for the cool wetness, yet drank slowly. The men had been working hard most of the morning to get the foundations and skeletons of the village houses built. They were taking the remainder of the day off; to rest, eat, and spend some time with their families.
Feeling a cool rag dabbing at his forehead, Koda lifted his gaze and smiled when he saw who it was. Ehlonna, his mate, stood in front of him, her face framed by fiery-crimson curls. Koda took her hand, bringing it to his lips and brushing a kiss across the knuckles of a creamy-skinned hand, “Thanks, love.”
She smiled back at him warmly, moving to stand next to him, resting an arm along his shoulders. Koda in turn wrapped an arm around her waist, and so he felt and heard it when she sighed softly. Turning his head towards her inquiringly, Koda saw that there was worry in her slate grey eyes as she gazed across the village.
“He’s been staring at that old deed for a while now. Sometimes I’m don’t know whether or not he is glad to have it. Jett did move the tribe here, but if Elder Ruue hadn’t passed away I‘m not sure when he would have done so.”
Koda nodded, understanding his girlfriend‘s concern. “Jett wouldn’t have done this, if he didn’t think that it would be good for the tribe. The deed is sort of a family heirloom and it probably reminds him that he barely knew them. He hadn’t looked at it in years, not until Ruue asked to come back here.”
It was quite a change, to move from their home of many years- near Agnew, east of Port Angeles -to the Hoh River area in the next county. But Koda felt that it had been time for change and perhaps Elder Ruue had just been the one who tipped the first domino into motion. Koda had faith and was happy to be back on the lands of his people. “Jett will be fine. And if not, we‘ll be the first to hear.”

Dust moved about in clouds in their wake, kicked up from the dirt road they drove on as they neared the beach access site. Eventually they came to a stop and with the sound of opening and closing doors, Eden and his uncle stood on the sandy shore; both looked around, though they were probably thinking different things.
Uncle Arrvo and he had left their hotel room in Oil City early this morning, after a full night of sleep in soft, comfortable beds. Their original plan for today had been to drive half way across the county to see Mount Olympus; but since they’d just driven quite a ways yesterday, Arrvo had decided to put off the trip for another day. Eden had pounced on such an opportunity. Figuratively, of course.
The raven haired boy had been trying to think of a way to talk his uncle into going to the beach just north(slightly west) of Oil City, near the woods, sooner rather than later. Eden knew how much Arrvo liked to study things of nature and history and had been afraid he wouldn’t be able to tear his uncle away from the nearby mountains any time soon.
But with the day’s plans being put-off for another day and today wide open for suggestions, Eden had asked about going to the beach, pointing out that it would be relaxing for them both. He’d also casually mentioned to Arrvo that it could be interesting to study the country’s western shore in this area- checking out the plant life, watching waves lengths and patterns, or picking up seashells and the like -hoping to spike his uncle’s interest.
And it had worked, cause here they were. And here it was. Eden sensed. . . .something. It had been at the edge of his mind for days, as if just out of reach. The closer they got to Oil City, the more he could sense it. And now, he was finally here; standing on the beach with the wind playfully blowing his hair about, staring at the browns and different shades of green that made up the woods before him.
One step was all it would take for another to follow behind it. And with only three dozen or so steps he’d be standing on the edge of the forest, close enough to reach out and touch a tree branch. Taking a slow, deep breath Eden tried to calm his excited nerves. Then, he took a step forward.

Jett stared at the old land deed he held in his hands. His obsidian eyes had studied it several times, even with it’s edges worn and it’s ink faded, it was still legible. It had been his since the day he was born, passed down from a grandfather he’d never known.
When he was younger he’d treasured it, as a keepsake from the family he barely remembered. As a youth Jett had resented it somewhat, locking it away in a chest he kept under his bed, not wanting the ‘great gift bestowed upon him, handed down from generation to generation,’ as he was told. As he’d matured Jett had eventually made peace with his ownership of the deed. But now, it was something entirely different, much more than a treasured keepsake or a unwanted gift, it had a purpose.
Elder Ruue’s passing, not more than a month ago, had sparked something in the tribe. There were whispers about the home lands, people saying that this was a sign for them to finally return. Jett had sat on his oak chest, studying the deed as he was now, trying to decide how to honor the dying mans wish. The land deed, which he had tucked away safely, out of sight, had become very, very important. It was their ticket to returning home.
A few days and some documentation later, here they were; somewhere between Oil City and Forks, to the west of U.S Route 101, just below the borderline between counties. Dakoda had been helping to delegate the working men, while he and Jett worked along side them. Ehlonna and the women had begun sorting through the truck loads of belongings, while Brielle kept the little ones entertained and out of trouble.
He usually spent his free afternoons just like this, seated in some out-of-the-way place , observing the changes in his people and watching as the village progressed more each day. Looking up from his current spot on a wooden crate, Jett saw how happy his people looked, gathered around the bonfire after a morning of work, talking and laughing.
A warmth filled him and he realized that Koda was right; it had been time for a change and the decision to move here had been a good one. Jett‘s lips twitched and instead of thinking or worrying, he just let go, and smiled.

Geiarrvoew Summers made a soft sound of delight as he finished scrawling in a final sentence, filling another page. He’d spent more than a good hour walking around the beach and along the shoreline, even venturing into the woods a short distance, just observing and enjoying the fresh air.
He’d wanted to go to the Olympus National Park today, to see the mountains and glaciers. But they would've had to drive at least an hour eastwards, taking to a trail on foot after that, before reaching Mount Olympus. Having already driven enough in the past few days, Arrvo decided to put it off for another day. He was pleased when Eden had suggested this sandy beach as an alternative.
It had been too long since Arrvo had been in Washington. He'd always meant to come back. Many memories of his younger years were filled with the rich forests in these parts; the almost-constant drizzling rain included. But Europe, Asia and much of the eastern world had captured his attention for years before he'd returned to America. The last decade or so, Geiarrvoew had been taking care of Eden, which limited his travel some; not that he minded.
The pair had spent their summers traveling where-ever, until Eden had graduated from school early; with the aid of some home-schooling and the teen's naturally bright mind. Now that he was back in Washington, Arrvo considered settling down somewhere in the area. He was getting a bit old for traveling so much and he'd been thinking of writing a book about his travels. If he did, hopefully Eden would like Washington enough to stick around.
Running a hand through his grey-streaked black hair, the elder man’s brow furrowed as he thought of his young relative. Where was Eden? Looking around, Arrvo didn’t see his slender figure anywhere on the wide-open beach. Deciding to give his nephew some more time to explore, and figuring that Eden would call to him if need be, Geiarrvoew went back to his notebook.

“Jett, there’s someone here. They say they came from the north. They want to talk to you. They‘re at the top of that hill near Barrett‘s place.” Nodding a silent reply to Dakoda, Jett stood from his spot on the overturned crate that was quickly becoming one of his thinking-spots.
Heading in the direction of the village, Jett felt the hairs on the back of his neck rise; he could practically sense the others. It had been a tiny passing feelings before, one he thought he might have imagined, but now he was sure; they were not alone.
The visitors had not entered their developing new home, instead they lingered in the woods around it. Following his senses, Jett skirted around the village, knowing that Dakoda and a few others were bound to follow. Finally, his senses brought him to the people he had been waiting for.
Three figures stood before him; the back left was a male, not as built as he would have expected, but quiet tall. He had deep brown hair, and unlike the other two, he wore a curious expression that bordered on friendly. Jett was surprised when he noticed that the form to the back right was female. She was beautiful, with coppery skin and glistening black locks that curled slightly, reaching her shoulders. She was quite a bit shorter than her two companions, and her expression, while not unwelcoming, was not friendly; more so calculating, as if she were studying him.
The third person stood in front of the other two, his expression unreadable. He had short dark hair, black eyes, and a solid, tall, strong-looking form. Jett met those dark eyes with his own obsidian orbs, not in a battle of wills, but simply in acknowledgement. It was quiet, until at last, their leader spoke. “I’m Jacob Black, son of Billy Black, of the Quileute tribe. W-”
“And he’s the Alpha.” This was spoken by the other male, who still looked friendly, and seemed to think it was important to point such a thing out. Even if he cut off his leader.
“Well of course he is, Seth. I think they figured that out on their own.” The female’s sarcasm was not lost on her pack-mate, who simply rolled his eyes. The she-wolf crossed her arms over her chest and returned the action.
“And as such, I should be able to talk without interruption, don’t you think?” The Alpha’s words were not harsh, only scolding. After a mumbled apology from the brown haired male and silence from the girl, he continued. “ I’m Alpha of my pack, though there’s another pack and another Alpha, of the Quileute people. We sensed you coming, but didn’t know when or from where. We’re here to ask why you’ve come.”
