Ok... Whitaker had to have his story known. So, if you remember what was said in prologue... That makes this version of the story M/M. If you want the female version of the story, let me know and I'll write it.
I came to Forks High for my senior year of school after my parents died. My grandfather lived near the Indian reservation, but he still wanted me to attend the public school.
My first class was homeroom. The teacher… I don’t remember his name. In fact, I’ve never been good with names. Ever. Anyway, that’s beside the point. This was no ordinary homeroom teacher, who lets you sit wherever since they only have you for 15 minutes. This was a good ol’ stick in the mud. He had everyone in alphabetical order. Since my last name is Hill, I was seated behind a boy by the name of Jasper Hale. Well, he looked more man than boy, but that’s beside the point as well. He had curly, golden blonde hair, but I couldn’t see his eyes because he kept his head down.
“Hi,” I whispered quietly as I sat down. He didn’t respond. “I’m Whitaker.”
“Old name, huh?” he mumbled.
“Like you can say anything, Jasper.” He only nodded in concession.
“I meant nothing by it.”
“Sorry. My father named me, and he liked older fashioned names. Said they were more dignified. Mom agreed.”
“Why did you move here?”
“They died. Both of them.” Finally, he turned to look at me. His eyes matched his unruly hair, the same shining gold. I had never seen such eyes, and I tried not to stare.
“I apologize—”
“Don’t. You didn’t know. Besides, it was a couple of months ago, so I’m okay.” Liar, I told myself.
“No, you’re not. No one is ‘okay’ after just a couple of months.”
“I don’t want pity,” I muttered, quiet enough that I thought he didn’t hear me.
“I wasn’t going to pity you,” he said just as quietly. And, for some reason, I believed him like I haven’t believed anyone.
“Thanks.” He nodded and stood as the bell rang.
He wasn’t in my next class. The teacher was more laid back, but the only seat available was next to a quiet brunette. Her eyes matched her hair, much as Jasper’s had. She greeted me quietly. Her name was Bella. Next to her sat a bronze-haired, golden-eyed…angel. He was beautiful, but I felt no attraction, which was strange for me. She introduced him as Edward. Vaguely, I wondered if he was related to Jasper because of their eyes.
“Whose homeroom are you in?” It was…crap! I’ve already forgotten his name!
“Um…I don’t remember…”
“Edward,” he supplied.
“Sorry, Edward. I’m horrible with names.”
“It’s okay. I’m Bella, to remind you,” Bella (obviously) said.
“Thank you, Bella.”
“Do you know anyone in your homeroom?” Edward asked.
“There was Jasper…but he’s the only one I talked to.”
“You remembered his name…” he pointed out.
“Huh. I guess I did.” The couple exchanged a silent glance. “What?” I asked, not missing their exchange.
“Jasper hasn’t spoken to anyone since… Well, for a while now,” Bella said.
“That’s ridiculous. He spoke to me.”
“We’re not joking, Whitaker,” Edward said sternly. I sobered quickly. “When we say anyone, we mean anyone. Not even to the family.”
“Are you related?” I asked bluntly.
“We’re all adopted, so not technically.”
“Oh. Ok. What happened to make him stay silent for…how long?”
“A couple of months now.” Hmm. That’s how long it’s been since… Stop those thoughts!
“Wow. That long?” They both nodded. “What happened?”
“Alice left.”
“Who’s Alice?”
“His…fiancée. We’re not sure why she left. She just…disappeared.” Of course he has to be taken.
“And Jasper just…shut down,” Bella added.
“Why did he talk to me?” I asked.
“I don’t know, but you must be special.” I blushed at Bella’s comment and looked away. “Did you just blush?” she asked.
“No!” I responded too quickly. She only smirked.
“I hate to disappoint, but don’t get your hopes up. Jasper’s not like that,” Edward said quietly.
“Like what?” I snapped, suddenly defensive.
“I meant nothing by it,” he assured. “I just didn’t want you to get your hopes up, only to be let down. It hurts worse when you hope.”
“What does?”
“Rejection,” Bella solemnly stated. I sighed.
“Don’t I know that…?” I muttered. “Don’t worry,” I said a little louder. “I won’t get my hopes up.” Bella smiled sadly and turned her attention back to the teacher. That smile seemed knowing…too knowing. I barely repressed the shiver that ran down my spine.
Yes, I know, still short. I wanted to set the scene, as it were. These chapters will probably all be short. It always happens that way when I write it IN chapters instead of dividing INTO chapters. Make sense? I hope so...
I hope you all think it's worth reading. In my opinion, it's worth writing.
Kate--I tried looking at baby name sites, but nothing struck that spark that meant it was the right name. That's why Whitaker is...well, Whitaker. It struck and stuck.
Gaps of Misery--Why W, you ask? I have no idea... I'll sort of explain it later in the story, though it could be any letter... W just did that struck and stuck thing. I like Willow, though. I may use it if I write the female version of this story. Don't visit a doctor. Go to an art class! (And I intentionally didn't give much. Just enough to spark an interest)
