Chapter 2
Brennan held a meeting with the rest of the team she worked with. She and Agent Booth would be traveling up to Maine in a few days and would be staying for an indefinite amount of time. Brennan’s boss, Dr. Camille Saroyan was there with the entomologist Dr. Jack Hodgins, forensic anthropologist Dr. Zack Addy, and facial reconstruction artist/ computer forensics expert Angela PearlyGates Montenegro.
“Dr. Saroyan, will your permission I would like to travel to Grand Isle, Maine to assist the town in a murder investigation. I may need to have Zack and Angela join me towards the end of the investigation if we are successful in following the lead.”
Camille nodded before turning to Booth, “and what do you say, Booth? Is Dr. Brennan needed on this case?”
“Dr. Saroyan, what do you mean, am I needed? Why do you need to justify my interaction on the case?” Brennan snipped, her arms folding across her chest.
“Well, Dr. Brennan, you were supposed to assist in the authentication of the Inupiat remains that were shipped in last week. You were adamant that only you were qualified for the task.”
“But…Hodgins can do that. He’s more than qualified. Right, you don’t mind, do you?” She turned and looked at Hodgins with a determined look on her face, almost daring him to question her.
Hodgins merely gaped at her.
“No? Thanks, Jack. See, I’m free now.” she finished, turning back to Cam, her jaw set.
Camille tried to hold in her chuckle while Hodgins looked insulted and about to argue his new task when Booth spoke up.
“Yeah, Camille, I do need Bones on the case. From what Dr. Cullen - the town’s only physician told us, the killings strongly resemble the Howard Epps case. I think that Bones’ expertise in that field far outweighs the need to see if some…ancient Eskimos are who they say…said…they were…are. I’m mean, they’re already dead – they won’t mind waiting.”
Camille shook her head.
“Okay, Dr. Brennan, you’re allowed to travel to Maine. You can send for Zackaroni and Angela if you need them. Hodgins – you’re now on the Inupiat authentication, and this time, please keep your temper intact with the museum director. Please.”
Brennan was smiling as she left the meeting to plan her flight, completely oblivious to the glares she was receiving as she entered her office.

Carlisle pulled into the driveway of his wooded home, relieved to see the cars of this wife and children already parked. He walked in to find a somber atmosphere.
Edward was playing a quiet lullaby, trying to comfort both Esme and Bella.
Jasper was reading.
Emmett and Rose where laying on one of two couches, their eyes closed in rest but always awake.
Alice was sitting at the picture window, looking outside, as if waiting for someone.
The household looked up as Carlisle entered the room. Esme jumped from her place near the computer and ran into her husband’s arms.
“Carlisle, what’s wrong? Does it involve the poor girl that was murdered last week? Edward said you sounded quite frantic in your message.”
Carlisle sighed, sitting down on another couch, pulling his gently wife into his arms.
Alice sat by his feet with her head on the couch cushions, content as her father began to run his fingers through her short hair.
“Yes, my love, it does. The chief of police came to see me today and it wasn’t for a social call. Another body has been discovered. A young girl again, another high school senior.
“They thought that following the meanings behind the trinkets found on the first body may lead us to a killer but instead they led use to another victim.
“She was 17 years old and due to marry in a few months. The head of the cheer leading team, dating the starting quarterback. Such a sweet girl.”
“But that isn’t what is upsetting you, is it Father?” Edward asked from his seat at the piano. He had stopped playing and was holding his wife close to him.
Carlisle shook his head, looking glum, “no, Edward, you’re correct, that is not the problem. Apparently the town’s people are not as comfortable around us as we hoped. They believe that we are behind the murders. This town was founded just after the Civil War and has never had a murder committed within the city limits. Since we’ve moved here two young girls have lost their lives.”
“Oh, Dad!” exclaimed Rosalie from her seat near Emmett.
“What can we do, we cannot possibly move – that would confirm our guilt? How can we stay here but also we cannot leave?”
Carlisle sighed. “I know, Rose. We need to be extra careful. Travel even further to hunt and do so more often. All we can do is be on our best behavior and not give them another reason to question us.
“A doctor from Washington DC and her FBI partner are coming up to take over the investigation. Let’s hope that it is solved quickly. But until then all we can do is wait.”
--
Booth and Brennan pulled off the road at a small gas station. A shiny yellow Porsche was parked at one side of the double gas pump. A tiny girl with black hair was seated at the steering wheel while a taller man with blond hair was pumping gas.
Booth got out to top off the gas tank in the Ford SUV. Might as well fill up while they were there. Brennan got out of the car and spread a map out on the hood of the car. They were lost.
“Booth, we are lost. Dr. Cullen is expecting us. We should probably call him and tell him we’re running late.” Booth grunted in response.
“Excuse me, ma’am.”
Brennan looked up to see the pixie haired girl standing next to her.
“I’m Alice Cullen. I’m sorry to eaves drop like this but I couldn’t help but over hear you. If you’re going to meet our Father, Jasper and I will gladly show you the way. We were heading over to the office ourselves.”
“That would be most helpful of you, thank you. Booth, are you finished yet?”
Booth slapped the hood of the SUV and jumped into the driver’s seat.
“Let’s go.”
Alice smiled before climbing back into her car with Jasper and slowly pulling out of the parking lot to lead Bones and Booth to her father’s office.
--
“Dad!!” Alice yelled when she pulled up to the house that served as the towns 'hospital.'
Jasper put a hand up to his ear, grimacing, “geez, Alice, knock my ear drums out why don’t ya.”
She flashed her brother a sparkling smile. “Oh come now dear brother, you’re hearing is just fine.”
She skipped up to the door and held it open for Bones and Booth to go through.
“Father, you have visitors. The doctor from D.C. is here.”
A tall young man with blond hair and the same gold eyes that Alice and Jasper shared walked into the main room.
He must be another brother, thought Booth, there is no way that can be their father, he’s barely 25!
“Hello, you must be Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth. It’s nice to meet you. I hope Alice and Jasper didn’t give you too much trouble when you got here.”
“Oh, no.” Brennan cut in. “They were wonderful; we never would have found you otherwise.”
Carlisle smiled.
“That is good to hear. Alice, Jasper, why don’t you two head home and tell your Mother that I’ll be home in a few hours. I need to meet with Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth about the ‘stuff ’ that has been happening around here.”
“Okay, Dad.” Alice skipped up and gave him a kiss on the cheek before following Jasper out in a dance like step.
Looking up at Booth, Carlisle smiled.
“Agent Booth, you look confused. Is something wrong?”
“Alice and Jasper are your children?”
“BOOTH!!” hissed Brennan, elbowing him in the ribs. “You can’t ask that!” she scolded.
Here, Carlisle outright laughed.
“It’s okay, Dr. Brennan. I’m used to it by now. Biologically, no, they aren’t. In my heart, they are completely and thoroughly mine, and my wife’s. Alice and Jasper, along with our other four children, are adopted.”
This perked Brennan’s curiosity.
“You adopted six children? That is very noble of you.”
“We have our own selfish reasons as well. Esme and I cannot have our own children. Because all of our children were much older when we adopted them…”
“The magic age,” muttered Brennan, barely audibly. Carlisle nodded.
“Yes. That is why the agency overlooked our being so young ourselves. I’m only 23 and my wife is 26.”
Booth cleared his throat.
“Yes, well, let’s see this “stuff” that is happening.”
Snapping both doctors back to from their thoughts, they nodded. Carlisle led them over to a large walk in freezer.
“We’re a small town and the closest full hospital is almost 3 hours away. We have to make do with this. It’s not the prettiest and we share it with the vet when they need it but it serves our humble needs.”
Two gurneys were set up inside with sheets over the bodies.
“The girl on table A was found first. She had, for lack of a better word, clues on her. We thought that they were leading us to the killer but instead the local police, volunteers mind you, found another body.
“Body B was newer. When that happened we knew we had to call professionals in. There are similar calling cards on the new victim but we haven’t chased them yet. We’re hoping that the killer won’t strike again until we start to chase them.”
Brennan and Booth had perked up with the mention of clues and Brennan was now bent over the first body.
“Dr. Cullen, do you happen to have the artifacts that accompanied the second body?” she asked, her cerulean eyes shinning.
“Call me Carlisle, please, and yes, they are over there. We tried to keep them in their original condition and noted where we found them.”
Carlisle pulled a small surgical table over to the body. There was a cross, a school ring, a hair ribbon with Greek letters on it, and a golf ball. Each was on a small index card that was labeled with there the item was found.
Brennan looked up at her partner with a look of nothing short of horror on her face.
“Bones, I know you don’t like jumping to conclusions, but in this case I’m going to say it. It’s Epps.”
Carlisle looked up with a sense of panic on his face. “Agent Booth, what do you mean “it’s Epps.” Isn’t Howard Epps serving life sentence in prison without the opportunity of parole? He is being securely contained within the Washington Penitentiary – isn’t he?”
Agent Booth cleared his throat and blushed, looking embarrassed.
“It had come to the attention of the FBI that Howard Epps was able to escape from his maximum security cell. A fire broke out in the prison and when the doors automatically opened to release the prisoner to the yard Epps was able to kill a guard and steal his uniform. He then walked out of the prison with no one being the wiser.”
Carlisle looked between Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan with horror on his face. At the same time he sent a frantic message to his son. Edward – get everyone home NOW! I will be there as soon as I can. I need you home with your Mother. I will be home soon.
“This story hasn’t been on the news. Shouldn’t people be aware that this killer is at large?”
Agent Booth shook his head. “We don’t want to alert Epps to our knowledge of his escape. We are hoping that he thinks that we think he perished in the fire. The body of the guard that was left was reported to be burned beyond all forensic recognition. We’re hoping that Epps will think the FBI isn’t looking for him and slip up in his games.”
Carlisle couldn’t think of what to say to the two visitors. He struggled for words while Brennan shot looks of warning at her partner.
“Carlisle,” she finally spoke up. “Are you alright? Your face has gone quite pale.”
Carlisle shook his head clear and looked up. “Y-Yes, I’m fine, thank you Doctor. Do either of you mind if we called a stop to today’s work?”
Agent Booth shook his head. “We understand, Carlisle. I’m a father myself and would be worried about my son. Go check on your family, Bones and I will find our way to the hotel and meet you again tomorrow. We’re sorry to have put such worry in your mind.”
Carlisle nodded before leading the doctor and agent out.
“Can you find your hotel from here?” he asked, obviously caring enough to ensure that the partners reached their destinations.
Booth nodded. “Go home Dr. Cullen and see your family. We’ll be fine.”
“Thank you,” Carlisle murmured as he walked quickly to his car and drove off towards his home and loved ones. Rationally he knew they would be okay, more than capable of taking care of themselves.
But the paternal figure in him had to see them and know they were safe. And until he saw them and gathered his wife and daughters in his arms he just wouldn’t be able to convince himself for sure.
--
Carlisle was working late again. Esme was sitting in the living room, looking at the door.
It’s almost eleven pm. Where is Carlisle? He says he’s working but the humans need to sleep. Why isn’t he home yet? Carlisle... She thought, trying to keep her thoughts from getting too frantic.
Edward looked from where he was playing. It was his Mother’s favorite song but she wasn’t paying attention.
“It’s okay, Mom. Dad will be back soon. Just talk to him. You know how understanding he is. It will be okay.”
Esme looked at her son and smiled a sad smile. “Will you play again for me? I love that song.”
Edward sighed and nodded, turning back to the piano he played his Mother’s song again, knowing that she wouldn’t really hear it this time either.
It was Edward’s third time through the song when Esme stood from the couch. The grandfather clock on the hall chimed that it was now one am.
Esme sighed and turned to her son. “I’m going to read upstairs. Good night, Edward.” He returned a sad smile, not capable of being happy when his mother was so upset.
“Good night, Mom.”
He turned back to the piano and started to play Bella’s Lullaby. It also helped to calm him when he was stressed. But as he played it tonight Edward knew he wouldn’t relax until his Carlisle was home and they had a long son to father talk.
It was almost 4am when Carlisle returned home that night. Esme had long since retired to their bedroom. She wasn’t sleeping but lying down in bed, passing the time, until her husband returned home.
She heard his engine pull in and the door slam. She heard mumbling and hushed tones come from downstairs. She recognized the voices of Edward and Carlisle but couldn’t make out what was being said.
They were putting a huge effort into keeping their conversation from her ears and she could only assume it was about her, and her depression since the new doctor arrived in town.
At last Esme heard her husband bid their youngest son “good night” before climbing the stairs to their top floor bedroom. He opened the door and sighed as he saw his wife in bed with her back to him.
Esme could almost hear his shoulders slumping. Carlisle’s footsteps led him to the bathroom where he turned the water in the shower on as hot as it could go. He stripped from his suit and left it in a crumpled heap in the corner – simply not having the energy needed to hang it up properly.
Stepping into the shower he hissed as the hot water hit his cold skin and instantly filled the bathroom with thick steam. He stood there, not moving, as the heat relaxes his stiff muscles. After nearly an hour the water was turned off and Carlisle reached for a towel.
Pulling on a pair of scrub pants he slid into bed behind his love and pulled her close to him. She didn’t acknowledge his presence, opting instead for the passive-aggressive approach of ignoring her husband.
Moving her hair Carlisle pressed his lips against his wife’s smooth neck. “I’m sorry Esme. I really am. But with all that is going on I’m scared as well. This killer needs to be caught. The town’s people suspect our family.
“And since Agent Booth informed us that Howard Epps has escaped from prison – I cannot help but picture one of our daughters in his path.”
Esme turned to face Carlisle. His eyes were worried and his shoulders tense again.
“Any of us could easily escape him, Carlisle. You know that. Like a weak human could truly harm one of us.”
Carlisle nodded. “I know, love, I know. But I still worry. You’re my life. Our family is my life. And I worry that something might
happen to you – even if those fears are irrational.”
Suddenly Carlisle perked up a bit. “But Dr. Brennanhas made another discovery about the body today. The second victim had a post-mortem injury to her shoulder.
“It has nothing to do with cheerleading and is most commonly found in golfers. She thinks that we should be concerned about a golfer being Epps next intended victim. And Dr. Brennan is calling in two of her co-workers from Washington to come up.
“Dr. Zack Addy and Ms. Angela Montenegro. They will help us further the investigation and with more people here we should be able to work more as well.”
Those weren’t the words that Carlisle should have chosen to say. Esme’s eyes became dark and she turned back around to put her back to Carlisle again.
“Don’t you spend enough time on that case already? You’re family used to mean something to you. When was the last time we spent the night together, or played a family baseball game, or you went hunting with your children?” Esme threw the blankets off the bed.
“I can’t stay here Carlisle.” She dressed quickly and walked to the door to her private office.
“I do love you Carlisle and I do need you, don’t doubt that, but I need you to need me too.”
The door to her office closed and Carlisle was left alone. Running a hand through his hair he too got up and dressed before looking for his sons – or more specifically Jasper and Edward. He would need their help if he was going to make it up to Esme.
