CHAPTER ONE
The Night Life
Baton Rouge
December 24
“Awe man come on Amara…” the frightened voice cut through her dream and she jerked into full awareness eyes wide with sweat sliding down her skin, “Jesus, that was a hell of a dream you were having! I thought you were being attacked or somethin’.” Amara scooted back from her squire Jessica head falling heavily into her hands. Same thing every damn year. She dreamed of their deaths of her own death. Bile rose in her throat and she quickly clamped down to keep it from rising any further.
A quick glance at the clock confirmed it was the same time as always 10 p.m. Hell of a way to wake up on Christmas eve. Speaking of…
“Jessica why the hell aren’t you at home with your family? Like I told you to do last night?” she asked efficiently drawing her attention from her own troubles to the girls. Jessica smiled sheepishly.
“Oh come on Boss. You need someone too. So I told my family I was staying with a friend who needed me. They completely understood.” she smiled at her and Amara wanted to strangle her.
“And their about to get a phone call from me reporting that new… boyfriend of yours…” Amara smirked as Jessica’s smile dropped. The girl had been dating a biker for the past three months something that would no doubt send her father into a killing spree.
“You wouldn’t.” she said almost afraid. All it took was one look from Amara and Jessica sighed and stood, “Fine you would. Your such a bitch you know that?” she turned and stomped from the room off to pack a few things and head home.
Amara on the other hand simply lay back in bed. She could hear Jessica scrambling about upstairs no doubt cursing her with every breath. She was a good kid and her heart was in the right place but she needed to be with her family right now. Amara finally climbed out of bed and headed into the shower.
She really needed to kill something. She thought with a sigh as slightly cold water pelted her skin calming her feverish skin. But most likely what Daimons were out had been taken care of by the other dark hunters in her sector. Sometimes it sucked not being the only one. Oddly Daimons were usually scarce on 24 and 25. As if it was some sort of truce on those two days.
Amara made a sound of annoyance and quickly stepped out of the shower. She wrapped a towel around herself and walked back into her room only to be greeted by a grinning Jessica.
“So.. Moms insisting you come home with me.” she said cheerfully while holding the phone out to her. She nearly growled. Jessica was a blue blood squire and that annoyed her on some days. She took the phone and even though she glared at Jessica her voice was pleasant.
“Hello? Mrs.-” she paused as the woman spoke correcting her on calling her Mrs. before she could even finish, “Sorry Marie. I really don’t think… well yeah there are others here… but I. I mean-” she sighed in defeat. The woman wasn’t going to take no for an answer. She kept babbling on about how there was going to be a big party on Christmas at the Sanctuary and how she should come.
Amara didn’t know why she was bothering to argue. She was going to end up going whether she wanted to or not. “Alright Marie. Alright you win. I’ll come for Christmas. Yeah ok. See you in a few hours.” she said one last goodbye before hanging up the phone. She turned her glare on Jessica. “Your lucky I like you girl. Or I’d strangle you right here and bury you in the back yard.” Jessica just laughed and walked off to finish packing.
Despite the fact that Jessica did things to irritate the shit out of her she still loved the girl like a sister. And her family. They took good care of her ever since Jessica came to be her squire. Well round one went to Jessica, but she be damned it they were taking that little tiny car that the girl owned. If she was being dragged to New Orleans she was going in style.
Jessica pouted in the passenger seat as Amara climbed into the red and black Bugatti. A car that screamed power. Amara was now dressed in all black as was the custom for most Dark Hunters. Slim jeans with a tight t-shirt and army style boots.
“Stop pouting. I told you I was too tall for that damn thing you drive around and I’m not dealing with it tonight.” she told the girl who just stuck her tongue out at her.
“Like this thing is much bigger and it’s like ten times more dangerous then mine.” she muttered tensing as soon as the engine roared to life. Sometimes Amara took great pleasure in torturing her squire.
“Your fault. You had to insist that I come along.” she said as she pulled out of the garage following the long driveway to the security station. She paused long enough to tell them she’d be gone for a couple nights before she hit the street. Jessica was already sitting with her eyes closed when they hit the highway. Amara glanced over at her and shook her head
“Get some sleep Jess.” she told her and for once Jessica didn’t argue with her. She curled up in the seat and relaxed as much as she could. No matter how much the girl complained about Amara’s driving, and all around attitude, she trusted her explicitly. That meant more to Amara then she cared to admit.
It was hard to trust someone after the man that raised her had betrayed her family. All because he was a coward. She gripped the wheel tighter in her hands. Oh how she’d made him scream. She’d been… well perhaps a bit vicious and sadistic in her torture and eventual killing of Archie. She hopped the worm was still shaking in fear of her in his death.
She shook her head to clear those thoughts. Better to be in a good mood when she saw Jessica’s family. Otherwise she might ruin their Christmas and she didn’t want to do that. It hit her then that she didn’t have anything for Jessica’s younger sisters, or for anyone for that matter. She’d bought something for Jessica, but she hadn’t thought about anyone else. She groaned in annoyance knowing she’d have to do something but she didn’t quite know what to do.
The trip, after that was quiet and uneventful. But the moment they pulled into the drive of Jessica’s families home she knew it was going to be a long evening. The house was alight and she could see several people in the vast windows laughing together. Uninvited the memories of her past came suddenly and she whimpered slightly until a knock on her car window pulled her out of it.
With a thankful sigh and she shut off the car and opened the door. A tall man stood there staring down at her (which was quite a feat considering her own height of six foot one). He had dark brown hair and blue eyes.
“Can I help you?” he asked voice low and eyes narrowed until Jessica got out of the car slightly unbalanced from being asleep.
“Why didn’t you tell me we were here Amara? Planning to leave me in this stupid car of yours weren’t you?” she snapped until she saw the man, “Nick! I didn’t know you’d be here!” she said walking around the car to hug him. He was grinning now
“Thought you weren’t going to be here, cher.” he said returning her hug, “So this the friend you couldn’t come home because of?” he asked and Jessica smiled,
“Nick this is Amara Delfono…”
“The mob bosses Dark Hunter daughter.” he interrupted staring her down as Amara grabbed Jessica’s bag and handed it to her. Jessica merely nodded as she took her bag. After that Amara stood stiffly as Nick made his first impressions of her. Finally he smiled
“Nick Gautier. It’s a pleasure.” He held his hand out to her and she took it not returning the smile.
“I told her, well more like threatened her last night to get her ass down here. Before tonight. But she’s as stubborn as the rest of you squires.” she said. She knew all about Nick, he’d been Kyrian’s squire until the Hunter had been freed. Lucky bastard.
She took her hand back from Nicks and turned her attention to Jessica.
“If you need me Jessica I’ll be at the Sanctuary.” She talked to the Peltier’s on her way to New Orleans the they assured her they’d have a room ready for her. Jessica pouted
“But Mama was looking forward to having you here…” she said and Amara shook her head
“Your mother has more people then she can handle tonight. Go give her a hand and I’ll see you tomorrow night. Besides you know I can’t handle the Christmas scene.” she said Jessica sighing sadly.
“I know Amara. Stay out of trouble alright? Go release your fury on some Daimons.” she suggested to which Amara nodded and climbed into the car. She had just started it when Nick slipped in the passenger seat. She glanced at him and he relaxed back into the seat.
“My cars at the Sanctuary. As is my mother. Thought you wouldn’t mind giving me a lift yeah?” She glared at him she didn’t have a lot of choice it seemed. So she pulled backwards out of the driveway and hit the gas. She was honestly hoping to scare the man but he simply relaxed back in his seat. He grinned at her
“So, how’d she trick you into coming down here?” he asked though she was doing her best to ignore him
“She played dirty and called Marie. One of the few women I can’t say no to. But as long as I don’t actually see her I can avoid being dragged into anything. I met the woman once since I turned and since then she’s taken it on herself to be my unofficial mother hen. She drives me insane sometimes.” she said though she did appreciate everything the woman tried to do for her.
Nick smirked at her “Yeah she’s a good woman. And if she drives you crazy you should meet my mom. She tried to play mother hen to Ash.” Amara arched an eyebrow and glanced at him. Acheron the official unofficial leader of the Dark Hunters. It was kind of funny to imagine anyone babying that man. She couldn’t help the snicker that escaped her lips and Nick grinned.
The Sanctuary was full of people, human and otherwise, as she and Nick walked in. But they weren’t there to drink. They were decorating for Christmas and the party that would follow tomorrow evening. Among them was the 14 members of the Peltier family. Aubert Peltier saw Nick and waved him over to where his mother stood talking with Aimee. The older woman hugged Nick the moment he stepped beside her
“Time to head home mom.” he said sweetly as Amara stopped a few feet away watching them bag slung over her shoulder. She was quiet and patient in waiting for her chance to talk to Aubert. Finally Nick turned with his mother and waved briefly at her before walking off to take his mother home. For a moment Amara was caught up in pain as her heart clenched at the sight. It took her a full moment to realize that Aubert was staring at her expectantly.
“Uh sorry. I’m Amara Delfono… I talked to-” she started only to have to jump back as two large bears slid across the floor in front of her. She tripped and fell back just as one bear tossed the other her way. She closed her eyes and cringed waiting for the full weight of the animal to hit her but it never did. She opened her eyes and found herself staring at a very naked chest.
“What the hells wrong with you two?!” Aubert voice yelled as he held back the other one, “Stupid little fools. Your lucky all these people here know us already!’ he shouted tossing the bear aside. A moment later it too was a man but he was naked for only a minute as he dressed in a flash.
She turned her attention to the man hovering over her. She couldn’t help but stare. All the Peltier and well all were-hunters were by a rule gorgeous. And this one was no exception. He was one of the Peltier boys and he didn’t seem to realize that he was above her his focus on his brother. She shifted to slid away but she bumped his leg and drew his attention. His eyes were wide and a moment later was dressed and standing.
“I’m sorry, I…” he was looking at the floor before his father cuffed him in the back of the head.
“I apologize for my boys Amara. They don’t know how to behave.” he growled giving them threatening looks. “Kyle grab her bag. Cody get your ass to the kitchen and get her something to eat.” he growled at each boy before they nodded and scrambled to do what he asked.
Kyle grabbed her bag then offered her his hand to help her to her feet. She gladly accepted feeling a shiver go through her as his larger hand took hers and pulled her to her feet.
“I’m really sorry…” he said smiling a bit sheepishly at her before leading her over to a clear table. “I’ll just take your stuff up yeah…” she nodded to him and watched him go… happily. He had a fine ass and those pants he wore. She nearly drooled in appreciation of the man. But her attention was drawn away from him when a bowel was placed in front of her.
She looked up expecting Cody but it was a woman,
“ Nicolette.” Amara greeted the woman by instinct knowing the bear matriarch the instant she saw her. Nicolette inclined her head and sat across from her,
“I hope you won’t think harshly of my boys. They tend not to think before they act.” she said with a soft smile. Amara merely shook her head and returned the smile. The Were-Hunter across from her was as vicious as anyone else she’d ever known, caring until someone threatened her home and family.
“I understand. Boys will be boys right?” Nicolette chuckled softly
“Too true. I have a room set up for you, it’s not up to our usual standards but you didn’t give us a lot of time.” she said and Amara sighed
“yeah… sorry about that. I wasn’t expecting to be in New Orleans. My squire dragged me in by force.” Nicolette shook her head.
“Well your welcome here as long as you are in New Orleans. If you need anything just call.” the woman stood and walked towards her husband who was still glaring at Cody. Kyle avoided the trouble by coming straight to Amara when he returned fifteen minutes later.
“When ever your ready… I’ll take you to your room.” She nodded and began to pick up her bowel which was suddenly taken from her hands. She looked up surprised at a tall blonde man with a monkey on his shoulder. She watched him put the bowel in a plastic bin and walk off towards the kitchen.
“That’s Wren… doesn’t say much.” he said grinning, “So don’t take offense.” He turned heading the same way. He took her to a door where yet another of the Peltier brothers stood. Remi Peltier just glared as they made their way toward him. Kyle grinned at him, but he didn’t return it. Nor did he move from the doorway forcing Kyle to stop in front of him.
“Come on Rem. Move it.” Remi didn’t move and he didn’t even look at Kyle his eyes were focused on Amara. She found his gaze didn’t unnerve her like it should. Instead it thrilled her. It was the gaze of a predator. An even better one then her. Because unlike her he wasn’t human. More animal then anything. He looked ready to go on a hunt and she was more then willing to oblige.
Remi kept his gaze on her even as his brother whined at him to move. But he wasn’t planning on it. He knew she could sense the animal in him clawing to the surface. He had caught her sent on Kyle as he’d passed earlier and it was delicious. And now seeing where the scent came from he wanted her. But Kyle was in the way. He just started to launch himself at Kyle when her hand was on his chest pushing them apart.
He paused mid-snarl and looked down at her a bit surprised. Even the Dark-Hunters knew not to get between a Were-Hunter and it’s target. It was a death wish.
Amara had acted without thinking and now she was currently trying not to piss down her leg. First it wasn’t very brave and second it wasn’t very Dark-Hunter like. But what she’d just done qualified for the Stupid hall of fame. She didn’t know many of the Peltiers but she’d heard stories about Remi Peltier.
He was known for his temper, banned from being a bouncer for just that reason. And currently all that anger was aimed for his brother Kyle. So, Amara had done the only thing she could think of to stop the impending fight. She’d stepped between the two bears regretting the decision the moment Remi’s attention turned back to her. It was the same intense gaze and it quite frankly sacred the shit out of her. But she also found it oddly attractive. Finally unable to take his gaze she dropped her hand and stepped back.
Remi felt the loss immediately and reached out to grab her hand back. He was reacting purely on instinct, but he must have still looked feral for Kyle stopped his hand and growled out a warning. Remi stepped back, but not because he was scared of his little brother, but because he finally felt the fear she felt. And while it made his inner beast giddy, it destroyed the human part of him.
She passed Remi quickly and into the Peltier home. Kyle followed slamming the door in Remi’s face as he tried to follow. She heard Remi snarl something before he leaned against the door causing it to push in slightly. Kyle mumbled something as he led her through the house passing a few people who were looking curiously at her. Kyle opened a door at the end of the hall and stepped back letting her step in.
It was small but would do for the little time she was going to be spending there. She turned to him and nodded her approval.
“Thanks.” he nodded and headed back out leaving her alone. Amara sighed and rubbed her temples as she sat on the edge of the bed. She wanted to just go back home. She’d pick Jessica up later. She hated being away from home. She laid back trying to find some way to entertain herself. She grabbed her bag and pulled out a book she’d been meaning to read for the last few weeks.
Before she knew it, it was shortly before dawn and she was already changing into her bed clothes when her cell phone began to ring. She made a noise of annoyance before digging through her discarded clothes for the phone. She picked it up
“Hello? Jessica?” there wasn’t anything on the other end for a moment then Jessica’s voice came over the phone sounding panicked.
“Amara? Amara I don’t know what’s going on. I went upstairs and then people were screaming… I heard mom shout.. Oh god Amara I-” Jessica’s voice cut off and she screamed. It sounded like the phone hit the floor a moment later and Amara found herself running down the hall yelling into the phone.
“Jessica? Jessica!” she pushed through the door into the bar pushing passed Remi in the process. He watched her in confusion and then followed after her. The rest of the bears were just preparing to head to bed when she ran passed them for the door.
Remi panicked. The sun was about up and if she went out now… He launched at her and tackled her to the floor even as she struggled and tried hard to get to the door.
“No! Jessica needs me damn it!’ she pushed at him, “there’s something wrong! Please I need to help her!” she could get the bear off her. Kyle and Cody ran over and pulled him back while Aubert picked her up off the floor.
“Calm down! There’s nothing you can do! You go out there now and you’ll be no help to anyone!” he snapped and she went limp in his arms tears streaming down her face. It was her death all over again. Aubert looked lost and Remi walked over after slugging off his brothers.
“Remi, take her back to her room and make sure she stays there. Aubert call Nick and have him call Acheron.” Nicolette said suddenly from the other side of the room. Remi eyed her carefully before taking her from his father and heading back towards the house.
