Mine and His
Chapter Two: Realizations
The Tulalip reservation was very different from La Push. It was a part of the city of Marysville, but technically it was a nation. Plus, they were a much wealthier tribe than the Quileute, a lot of that having to do with the casino and resort. But as Bella watched the scenery pass by while Jake drove along a main road behind Sam, she noticed the houses became dilapidated as well as less maintained with moss pushing up shingles and mildew marring the old fences. “Jake, I thought you said that the Tulalip tribe was rich?”
“It is. The casino rakes in millions.”
“Then what’s up with the houses out here? Aren’t all the tribe members supposed to get a share?”
“They’re supposed to, but it’s not always equal. They have their problems, like every tribe Bella. Though theirs may not be as much financial as trying to maintain their culture while surviving in a white man’s world.”
“You guys don’t seem to have a problem with it.” Jake looked over at her and smiled at her.
“We also don’t have the corruption that comes with the green.” He raised his left hand and rubbed his fingers together like he had cash in them while winking and grinning at her.
They pulled off the main road onto a small dirt road, much like those on the Quileute reservation, though this one was pock marked with pot holes ranging in size from sunken baseballs to mini lakes, seeing as how it had just poured down rain not two hours ago.
Jake pulled up next to Sam in a large gravel driveway in front of a nice house, the only nice house on the street. The rest were covered with mildew and years of grime. A girl ran out of the house and jumped onto Emily. Jake leaned down to Bella, “That’s Casey, the bride. The guy in the door is Jason, the groom. Casey is Emily’s cousin.” Bella looked a little confused.
“So, wouldn’t she be Leah’s cousin too?”
“No, Leah is Emily’s cousin on Emily’s mother’s side. Casey is Emily’s cousin on her father’s side.”
“Are you all just cousins, like backwood hicks?” Bella teased. Jake chuckled while he led her up thru the cars toward the group.
“No, Emily’s family is just really big.” They got up to the group and Casey had finally settled down with Jason slinging an arm over her shoulders. Casey looked to Emily, “So, how’s Adeline? Did she get all settled in?”
“What do you mean? Adeline should be here with you.” Emily let go of Sam and took a step toward Casey. Casey shook her head.
“No, she should be with you. I haven’t seen her or heard from her in a couple days. You know she calls every day. I assumed that she finally left Gerry and was too tired when she got to your house to call.” Emily looked enraged.
“Casey! You know her better than that! No matter how tired she is, she always calls. I left you in charge of her while I could get everything sorted out in La Push!”
“Well, I’m sorry! It’s not like I haven’t had other things to take care of!”
“That’s no excuse Casey! God only knows what he’s done to her! He could have kil-” Just then Emily was interrupted by a car racing up the driveway, horn blaring. The driver slammed on the brakes, sending gravel flying. Out of the car climbed a large man, with dark hair, deep blue eyes, and bulging muscles. He started stomping towards Emily.
“Where the hell is she, bitch?!” Sam stepped in front of Emily in a protective stance, ready to pound the guy’s face in. “Where the hell did you take her?!”
“Woah, man. Just back up and calm down.” Sam tried to reason with the man. While Sam struggled with the stranger, Bella turned to Jake, “What’s going on?” She looked up at Jake and he had a worried look on his face.
“It’s Adeline. She’s another one of Emily’s cousins. Her mother died, leaving her alone with that bastard,” he made a motion with his head toward the man, “Gerry. Asshole beats her daily. Emily found out, but since Adeline is still a minor, and Gerry had access to Adeline’s mother’s life insurance, the court ordered her to stay with him. Last I heard, Adeline was going to leave Gerry and take a ferry to the peninsula. She was supposed to call when the ferry landed, but it sounds like she chose to walk instead. We must have left just before she arrived.” Bella looked puzzled.
“So shouldn’t she have called when she got to La Push?”
“That’s why everyone’s worried.” They turned back to the scene in front of them. Sam had the man, Gerry, in a Full Nelson, keeping him from attacking Emily.
“She belongs to me! You stupid bitch! Tell me where she is!” Gerry’s shouting was bringing everyone inside the house out onto the large porch. This didn’t go on for much longer before a mature man in his fifties stepped out onto the front steps of the house with a double barrel shot gun and fired it into the air. Everyone looked to him and Gerry stopped struggling.
“Gerry, you leave now before I call the police. As for Adeline, you leave her with the Quileute. I’m sure the other tribe would be all too happy to see the bruises and scars you left on her. And you won’t be able to bribe your way out of that one. Now go.” The new man’s voice carried across the big yard to where the Quileute were standing. Sam let Gerry go and practically ran to Emily, who had by this time taken up residence with all of the other wolves from La Push.
Gerry started backing away. He pointed to Emily, “This isn’t over bitch. You just wait and see.”
“Leave Gerry. This is your last chance.” The man called. Gerry shot one last look at the group and folded himself into his car. He stamped on the gas, sending gravel flying again and raced off. Sam enveloped Emily in his arms and looked to Bella and Jake. “Bella will you call your father and have him pick up Billy? I need them to go looking for Adeline. She should be in La Push.” Bella nodded and everyone followed Casey into the house on this day, which should have been one of celebration.

Bella put the phone back on the dock and looked up to expectant faces. “So? What’d he say?” Seth asked eagerly. Bella looked at Sam.
“He said he would try to find her, but since she’s been missing for a few days, her trail is old, so even if they took the dogs out after her, they might not find her.” Sam just looked pensively down at his hands. Bella heard the sound of a glass smash from behind the door to the kitchen. Emily was tearing Casey a new one and Casey’s father, John, had taken the opportunity to slip out for more food for that evening’s dinner.
“You stupid cow! I leave for a few weeks to get everything ready, and leave you with one job! Look after Adeline! It wasn’t hard! Check on her in the morning and check in at night! That’s it! Two phone calls! What if she ends up dead?! It’s gonna be on your head! Do you have any idea how disappointed your mother would be if she were here?!” It went on like that for another few minutes before everyone decided it was a good time to visit the beaches and compare them to La Push.

Edward had kept his promise. He didn’t leave Adeline’s side for a minute. He glanced at the clock. He would need to feed soon. Bella was going to be home tomorrow and Edward needed to feed if he was going to resist the call of her blood.
He looked to Adeline. She looked so small, so breakable. Esme had washed the dirt and blood from her body, and he could see the bruises that riddled her body. At first he had assumed they were from the cougar attack, but came to realize that cougars didn’t grab their victim’s wrists so hard to leave marks, and cougars didn’t leave strangulation bruises. Someone had hurt Adeline, his sweet, small, Adeline. Rage filled his chest- of the sort he had never felt before. He realized that he desperately needed to hunt, if only to sate the blood lust he felt towards whomever had beaten Adeline so.
Edward looked at the clock again. Adeline wouldn’t wake until after Bella came home. He hoped that she would wait until Bella was in bed and asleep. He didn’t think he could resist expressing his feelings toward her when she woke and he didn’t want to hurt Bella with the feelings he was experiencing. Fortunately, he had time to hunt so he could focus on sorting out Bella and Adeline when the time came.
When Edward returned home, Bella had come back from her visit to the Tulalip Reservation and was talking with every one in the living room. She stopped her story and smiled at him when he came in. He returned her smile and kissed her on top of her head before taking a seat next to her.
“So Bella, what happened then?” Emmet badgered her.
“So then we spent the entire weekend listening to Emily yell at Casey, the bride, about their missing cousin. She didn’t stop yelling until the potlatch. Then she got so drunk, she couldn’t remember what she was mad about.” Edward listened to Bella’s story with half a mind while the other was focused on the girl upstairs. He was brought back to the rest of the family when Bella finished her story.
“That’s aweful. I wonder if there is something we can do? Maybe Alice could try and locate Adeline?” Alice nodded in agreement. Edward perked up a little.
“Adeline? You didn’t tell me the girl’s name was Adeline.” If Edward could sweat, he would have sweated through his shirt by now. Bella nodded.
“You came in after that part of the story. Apparently her step father beat her up a lot and that’s why she ran away. Casey was supposed to be checking on her and dropped the ball. Now Emily is frantic and the wolves haven’t found any scent trail yet.” The wolves were looking for her. If they found her scent trail they would follow it right to the house and find out he had changed her. But maybe that wouldn’t be so bad, if he could make them realize he had not other option to save her.
He came out of his reverie again while the family was forming a plan of search and rescue. Edward cleared his throat. Everyone stopped and looked at him. “I- I may know where she is.” Everyone was confused for a minute and Edward gave a meaningful look to Esme. He saw as the realization dawned on her and she put her hand to her mouth in shock.
“Oh, Edward, no...” Everyone was still confused looking back and forth from Esme to Edward.
“Yes.”
“Yes what? Let us in on the secret, please,” Carlisle asked.
“Yeah, Edward, not all of us get the fun of reading everyone’s minds!” Emmett was almost falling out of his chair in anticipation of a new secret being revealed. Edward cleared his throat nervously again and looked down at his young wife, hoping that this would all pan out for the best and she wouldn’t get hurt.
“I-Uh, Adeline is, um, the girl I changed.” The entire family sat back in their chairs, realizing the gravity of the new situation. This was also when they heard a loud thump from upstairs. Bella blinked when she realized that Edward wasn’t next to her anymore. The family followed him up there and Bella trailed behind. When she reached Carlisle’s office she saw what the fuss was about. The small girl was thrashing on the surgical table.
“What’s happening to her?” Bella whispered.
“She’s dying.” Alice answered with a worried look towards Adeline. Bella followed her gaze and that’s when she saw it. Her husband, Edward, holding the girl to his chest to restrain her jerking movements and the look on his face showing more emotion that she had ever seen in his expression. He was worried about this girl, concerned for her welfare. But not just as a sire or a friend. He was concerned for her as a lover.
