Faith, Trust, and a Little Pixy dust
Chapter Two
“No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone”
I sat on the edge of my mothers’ bed my hands folded neatly in my lap and my legs crossed at the ankles, sitting like a proper lady. I watched in silence as my mother brushed her beautiful dark blonde hair quickly twisting it three times and then pulling it up and clipping it tightly to her head. Letting the reaming strands rain down over the large black clip just touching the base of her neck. Her gray eyes stayed fixed on the large circle mirror in front of her as she began applying her makeup, careful not to make a mistake of any kind. She had such a steady hand. She was dressed in the most elegant of dresses I had ever seen. It was backless and stretched all the way down to the floor covering her nyloned feet. The dress was a sparkly black that forced her dark gray eyes to sparkle perfectly in the light.
I sighed as I removed my folded hands from my lap placing them on the bed on either side of my body. I tore my eyes away from her, averting them to the ground. I could never wear something as elegant as that, not the way she does.
“Charlie, darling could you hand me my earrings off the dresser?” her soft voice called.
I nodded my head as I stood, my sock covered feet making soft thumping sounds as I walked across the hard wood floor to the large fancy dresser. It was hand carved and made out of a rare maple wood. I grabbed a little black velvet box off the dresser, rubbing my thumb over the soft material before handing the box to my mother. She thanked me with a brilliant smile and went about her business of putting the beautiful diamond dangly earrings on. They shined so beautifully against her neck, like the way sunlight might on a clear lake in the middle of summer.
“Um, mom?” I mumbled, grabbing her attention as I sat back onto her king sized bed that she shared with my father. I rubbed my finger tips along the silky fabric as I slowly brought my eyes from her floor to her reflection in the mirror.
“Yes.” She replied to me, not brothering to look at me through the mirror as she applied her ruby red lipstick to her portioned lips. I stared at her as she applied the red substance with grace, not once missing her lip. My face became flushed as her eyes shifted from her lips to me. Quickly I titled my head to the ground to hide my now redden face. Her light hearted chuckle brought my eyes back to her. “Charlie, you’re so shy.” She mumbled standing from her vanity chair and walking over to her bed, lightly sitting down next to me. Her bare arm stretched over my shoulders and across my back. With a light tug she brought me closer to the warmth of her body. I smiled wide as I leant my head into her. There was nothing better then a mothers embrace. “Speak up child, don’t go by being unheard,” She whispered to me before kissing my forehead. I nodded as a reply.
“Would it be okay if Riley spent the night?” I asked shifting a little so I could see her eyes. She smirked at me before standing and walking across the room to slip on a pair of black pumps.
“I suppose that would be alright,” She paused and I smiled, excitement beginning to rise in the pit of my stomach “But I don’t wanna get any calls from the neighbors saying you’re being to rowdy.” I smiled jumping up and sprinting the short distance to her. Wrapping my arms around her I nuzzled my head into her chest, inhaling the sweet aroma of her flower perfume.
“I won’t I promise!” I declared, letting go of her and running out her door and down the hall to my own room. Grabbing my phone from under my pillow I flipped it open and pushed the number four. I waited as the phone rang my smile still shown on my face.
“Hello?” Riley’s voice rang clear in my ear on the other end of the receiver.
“She said yes!” I practically yelled into the phone with excitement.
“Awesome! I’ll be over there in five.” She replied quickly before she hung up. Slamming my phone shut I threw it to my bed. Jumping up and running back down the hallway and to the stairs to wait for my friend to get here. Five minuets passed and I heard the loud chimes of the door bell start to ring.
“I got it!” I yelled. Smiling, I jumped up from the couch, running as fast as my short legs would take me towards the door. I smiled widely wrapping my arms around the tall girl. “Took you long enough” I joked, letting her in and closing the door behind her. A few more minuets passed before my parents were finally ready to leave and came down the stairs looking like movie stars about to go to some red carpet premiere.
“Alright kids, we’re off,” My fathers’ loud voice boomed through the living room. At the same time Katie and I stood from the couch to hug our parents goodbye. “Our contacts are on the fridge, there’s plenty of food and I want you two in bed by a certain hour. There is no going outside unless the house is burning down,” My father demanded I smiled and nodded at him while Katie laughed at his ridicules orders. I hugged him tightly and whispered an ‘I love you’ in his ear before he walked away. I smiled widely as my mothers soft eyes fell on me. She pulled me into a hug and I gladly accepted, immediately hugging back
“Be safe.” She whispered as she kissed my cheek. I nodded as I escorted her to the door
“Bye mommy, bye daddy, I love you!” Katie yelled as she waved to them from the door way.
“Bye Katie, bye Charlie.” Mother yelled back as she stepped into the passenger side of the nearly new dodge avenger. With one last wave goodbye I closed the door.
“Charlie-Marie, you stop dreaming and get real, you need a job, I can’t have you slacking off young lady.” Riley said her voice low her chest puffed out. I laughed a little as she attempted to impersonate my dad. “Now, dear, don’t be so hard on her she’s just a wimpy little girl.” Her voice changed becoming high pitched to imitate my mother. I opened my mouth in mock shock as I grabbed a couch pillow holding it tightly in my hand.
“Hey, I took offence to that!” I shouted throwing the heavy pillow as hard as I could at Riley, I laughed loudly as said pillow hit her directly in the face knocking her to the floor with a loud thump. Katie joined in with my laughing as we both watched as Riley struggled to get up off the ground.
“Oh yeah?” She taunted a little hint of anger clear in her voice, but I was too busy laughing at her falling to the ground to notice the heavy pillow coming at me. I had no time to dodge the pillow so I simply braced for impact. As the pillow hit me dead in the face I wrapped my arms around it. Ripping it away from my face I ran towards Riley pillow in hand. She screamed and ran away from me.
“You guys are funny.” Katie said laughing so hard she was holding her stomach. I stopped chasing Riley and instead thrust my pillow at Katie. She gasped in surprise as the pillow hit her right in the face knocking her back a few steps. “Hey that’s not fair!” She proclaimed as I laughed at her. “Cheater!” She yelled picking up the pillow and running after me.
Three hours passed by like nothing to the three of us. We were just too busy playing, eating and dancing to notice. It was about eleven thirty and Katie had already passed out on the couch a pillow over her head and the remote resting in her lifeless hand. With a soft giggle I threw the pillow off her head and lifted her small body into my arms. Once I had tucked her in and shut off her light I walked back to my room. Noticing Riley had already changed and was now sitting crossed legged on my bed a magazine in her lap. Grabbing a shirt and a pair and PJ pants I walked into my bathroom, that was connected to my room, and quickly changed. I never liked to take to long changing, there was always the risk of someone barging in.
Once I was all changed I threw my dirty school uniform in my hamper and jumped onto my queen sized bed plopping down next to Riley.
“What are you reading?” I asked her as I peaked over her shoulders.
“It’s a Cosmo magazine,” She replied lifting her knees to her chest placing the booklet of paper on them so I could see the words better. “I’m reading this thing, on how to have the best sex ever.” My face reddened as the words left her mouth. Oh course I knew about sex, what fifteen year old wouldn’t but I always got nervous when girls around me would talk about it. I’ve never had sex; I didn’t think I really had to. Something about it just seemed dirty to me. No boy I had ever dated made me want to go that far with them.
“O-oh.” I stuttered sitting back pulling my knees to my chest trying my hardest to hide my embarrassing blush from her. She laughed loudly and my green eyes snapped to the back of her head. I furrowed my brow trying to ignore the anger that was beginning to rise in my stomach. Only two things ever angered me. Someone making fun of my name for the fact that it is indeed a boys name, and then people who poke fun at my lack of ‘sexual experience.’
“You’re such a little virgin girl Charles.” She laughed. I didn’t. I didn’t find it funny. I don’t see why anyone would. Just because Riley has had sex many times doesn’t mean she has some sort of right to pick on me because I haven’t.
“Whatever.” I mumbled angrily as I dropped to my bed rolling over so my face was towards the wall, my back towards her.
“Aw, Charlie I’m sorry I didn’t mean it.” She tried to comfort me but I cut her off.
“Whatever, it doesn’t matter.” I grumbled pulling the covers down and wiggling my small body under them. I shut my eyes tight as my bed shifted. As soon as the lights were turned off I reopened my eyes, staring at my empty bland wall. The moons light barely peeking in from the window making my room glow in an eerie pale blue color.
“I really am sorry, I forget sometimes.” Riley said as she lay down again. ‘You always forget’ I mumbled to myself in my head. We sat there in silence for a few more minuets before I finally spoke up.
“So, u-um what’s it feel like?” I asked, my face flushing at such a dirty question.
“Well it’s kind of like,” She paused, gathering her words to better explain the feeling to me with out making me cringe “Well it’s like,” I furrowed my brow rolling over to look at her. It couldn’t really be that hard to explain it. “Oh you’ll just have to find out for yourself.” I rolled my eyes a smile forming on my face.
“Oh you’re helpful.” I mumbled playfully before rolling back over. “Thanks for trying though, night Riley.” I yawned as I snuggled further into my pillows and blankets. Riley doing the same thing.
Bang. Bang.
My eyes short open. I grunted rolling over glancing at my digital clock sitting on my
night stand. Three-thirty in the morning, what could be so important to wake someone up at three-thirty in the morning?
Bang. Bang.
Grumbling I climbed over Riley and stumbled to my feet as I made my way to the bedroom door. Scratching my head I slowly made it down the stairs and towards the front door. Maybe my parents forgot their keys, either that or were too incoherent to open the door and needed some assistance.
Bang. Bang
“Shut up, I’m coming!” I mumbled to myself as I walked around a chair and to the door. “What is it?” I asked as I opened the door expecting to see my parents, or possibly just an empty stoop. I would have rather been a victim of a little game of ding dong ditch then what I was about to be a victim to.
Opening the door my eyes widened as two police officers, a nicely dressed woman, and a few other people stood on my door step. Their faces grim and eyes full to the brim in an unplaced suffering.
“Are you Charlie-Marie Garland?” One of the police officers asked his voice firm and strong, like an officer of the laws voice should be, to inflict fear into the ones he was chasing. Dumbfounded, I nodded my head opening the door further then the little crack that I had originally allowed. Before the cop could say anything more the woman standing behind them wiggled her small frame out from behind the two men.
“Hi Charlie-Marie, my name is Clara. May I come in?” She was a beautiful woman, I’d say in her early thirties and with light brown hair that had a small portion of blonde highlights poking out. Her eyes were a soft honey color and filled with all types of love and compassion. I nodded my head again stepping out of the way as she and a few others stepped into my house.
“What’s going on? Am I in some sort of trouble?” I asked following the woman as she walked over to our large sectional couch. She turned around, her eyes falling on my own. She shook her head as she mouthed the words 'no.'
“Charlie-Marie,” She started but I cut her off.
“It’s just Charlie.” I corrected her. She nodded her head as she sat down on the couch, her body angled towards me. She patted the open cousin next to her, gesturing for me to sit down. My eyes never leaving hers, i sat down. The pumping of my heart so fast that i could hear it pounding on the inside of my head.
“Charlie, I’m so very sorry to say this, but your parents, they were in a fatal car crash.” She paused placing her hand on my knee, her thumb caressing my knee cap in an attempt console me. I looked away from her as my eyes began to blur, my breathing becoming heavy and distorted.
“Bu-but, I don’t understand...” I mumbled talking more to myself then anyone. With tears in my eyes I looked back to the woman. Her face turned down into a frown as I looked at her. “How?” I asked my lip quivering. I needed to know. I wanted to know. Biting down on my lip I turned my head back to the ground and I clapped my hands together to stop them from shaking so vigorously.
“They swerved from a deer and hit a tree, it split the car down the middle, killing them both on impact.” She explained. Leaning forward I placed my head in my hands as more tears came. My body convulsed violently as I cried, I didn’t bother silencing my loud sobs. My sobs only became louder as the woman, Clara, began to rub my back and whisper softly “It’ll be okay.” But it wouldn’t be okay, not in the slightest would it ever be okay. My parents were dead. Dead. Gone. Not coming back. What was I supposed to do? What was I supposed to tell Katie? My head snapped up as I thought of her. I looked at the woman with sad eyes.
“My little sister, I have to tell her.” I exclaimed as I began to stand.
“Tell me what? Charlie, who are all these people? What happened?” As my eyes hit hers, my lip began to quiver again, and tears slowly slipped down my face. I motioned for her to come to me with my hands, and she obeyed. Once she was in my grasp I held her tight to my body.
“Mom and dad aren’t coming home,” I paused taking a deep breath in forcing the tears back long enough so I could get out what I had to say. “They got in a car accident, they aren’t coming back.” I finished my voice fading as my hysteria's began to come back. She pushed against my shoulders pushing her body away from me.
“What!?” She screamed tears beginning to brim her eyes. “You’re lying! It’s not funny, mommy and daddy will be home soon!” She yelled backing away from me, tears falling down her light pink cheeks.
“Katie...” I whispered holding my arms out for her. She shook her head as she kept backing away, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.
“No, No, No.” She mumbled as more tears ran down her face. I tried calling her name once more but she ignored me. “You’re lying!” She screamed as loud as her soft voice would let her. “You’re lying!” Her voice slamming off the walls causing me to cringed.
“Katelyn Nicole Garland!” I screamed catching her attention. Her gray eyes finally looked up into mine. I gasped as I could feel the pain, and sadness she was feeling. Standing I walked over to her pulling her into my arms as I began to rock her.
“Why?” She cried into my chest. I just held her tighter. I felt another pair of arms around me and I looked up. It was Riley. Her face was twisted in a horrible sorrow as she leaned her head against my shoulder.
“I’m so sorry.” She whispered to me, her arms tightening around my body. I couldn’t hold the tears back any longer. I let them spill from my green eyes as I leaned my head into Riley’s.
After an hour of crying I finally got Katie to fall asleep on the couch. Her favorite teddy bear being clutched tightly to her chest as she slept. Riley sitting by her feet fast asleep as well. Slowly I stood from the couch, careful not to wake Katie or Riley.
I walked towards my kitchen and towards the woman, Clara, I think was her name. I walked right up next to her. Ignoring the look of sympathy she gave me I sat down next to her at our dining room table. I figured out earlier that she was from social services, and was here to take us.
“What happens now?”
