Sure enough, what the Cullen family feared would happen did. When Edward returned from Bella’s house in the morning he announced that he thought it was time to leave. As their leader, the decision was entirely up to Carlisle, but Edward was very insistent.
It was true that people were starting to talk about how Carlisle still looked so young, but he had thought they could stay at least until Edward, Alice, and Jasper graduated in the spring. Then he could use the excuse of wanting to stay near them while they went to college to pull up stakes and move the family yet again.
However, the previous day’s events had convinced Edward that he and the entire family were a danger to Bella, and the only way he’d be able to stay away from her was if the entire family moved. Carlisle agreed to think it over.
Naturally he sent Liam to try and talk some sense into his nephew. “It’s been how many months? And this is the first thing that’s happened,” Liam pointed out when he cornered Edward later that evening.
“What about James?” Edward argued. “She was nearly killed! I nearly killed her!”
Liam reached and grabbed Edward’s hand to try and calm him down, but the younger vampire pulled away. “Don’t!” he shouted angrily. “I know what you’re trying to do, and it won’t work.”
Liam shook his head in disbelief. “You are so selfish.”
“I’m selfish?” Edward was livid now.
Liam nodded. “Because of a molehill you’re turning into a mountain, you’re willing to break both your own heart and Bella’s. And let’s not forget Alice. Everyone but Rosalie loves her—and, well, let’s face it, Rosalie is a spoiled bitch.”
Edward’s jaw clenched in anger. Uncle Liam had a knack for being brutally honest, and such honesty wasn’t really welcome at the moment. “I’m doing what’s best for her. You said it yourself: the reason you don’t have any trouble dating humans is that you live by yourself.”
Liam only shrugged. He couldn’t deny what he had said to his older brother, who had been listening to the entire conversation.
“We’ll leave, then,” Carlisle said quietly. It was true that he too had developed a fondness for Bella, which was never a good thing to do. He didn’t want to see her get hurt any more than Edward did. “We’ll pack up tonight and head to Maine. You can say your goodbyes tomorrow after school.”
Edward nodded, suddenly feeling much better even though his heart was already starting to break. All that mattered was that Bella would be safe. He turned to Liam. “I need you to do something for me.”
“What?” Liam asked, more than a little agitated.
“Stay and look after her for me.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “You’re uprooting your entire family because being around vampires is too dangerous, but you want me to stay?”
Edward realized the irony of his request, but this was important. “Victoria is still out there, and we don’t know what she might be planning. I don’t want to leave Bella completely unguarded, and I know you won’t hurt her. I don’t want her to know you’re here, though. I don’t want her trying to get you to tell her where I am.”
Liam thought about it for a moment. “Fine,” he agreed. “I’ll take care of her.”
“Thank you.” Edward pulled Liam into a brief hug, then went to go pack.
Edward wanted to be alone when he said goodbye to Bella, so Liam went back to New York to get the rest of his things. He was only gone two days, but as he drove through Forks upon his return he picked up that Bella was missing.
“Damn you, Edward,” he growled under his breath, knowing Edward must have dropped it all on her and left her alone in the woods. Bella was co-dependent on Edward. He should have known better.
Liam pulled into the driveway and got out of the car, sniffing the air. Since everyone thought Bella was lost, Edward probably had her at the house, so she shouldn’t be far. Her scent was on the light breeze that blew through the trees, and he followed it.
Bella lay on the forest floor, staring blankly into the darkness. She had no idea how much time had passed, nor did she care. The only thing that mattered was that Edward was gone and was never coming back. She didn’t even get up when it started to rain.
She was only vaguely aware of faint footsteps coming toward her. “Oh, Bella,” a voice whispered. Something heavy and warm was placed over her and cold fingers brushed her cheek. It wasn’t Edward though, the smell was different. The piece of clothing on top of her held a hint of vanilla scent.
“It will be all right, sweetheart,” the soft, gentle voice whispered in her ear. “I’ll make sure it is.”
The presence seemed to leave then, and Bella’s whole body jumped when she heard a loud, animalistic roar. She was alone again, but not for long. More footsteps approached and a different voice started calling her name.
The tall, dark figure stood by her for a minute as if it was searching for something. Then it scooped her up and carried her out of the woods. “I found her!” a male voice called out.
“Bella?” She heard a familiar voice call her name. It was Charlie, and he sounded worried. “Bella, are you hurt? Did he just leave you out here?”
She shook her head weakly, too exhausted to do or say much more. Charlie took her home and a doctor came to examine her. The only thing wrong with her was mild hypothermia and exhaustion. She listened briefly to a conversation about Dr. Cullen leaving suddenly to take an offer in Los Angeles. But Bella knew they would never go there; it was too sunny. The last thing she heard before she let unconsciousness take her was a phone ringing.
