Chapter 2
Pamela Palmer is the author of the Feral Warrior Novels upon which this story is based. I in no way own these characters but did borrow them for your entertainment only. Freyanna is my creation. With the moon approaching its zenith, Freyanna conjured up the supplies she needed to summon the Alchemist's spirit trap and spring the warriors trapped within. A central fire burned safely in a circle of stones and Freyanna placed a green, pine scented candle to the North of the larger circle Cougar had scribed into the ground. She then placed a red, cinnamon scented candle to the South, a yellow unscented candle to the East, a blue ocean breeze scented candle to the West and a White sandalwood and jasmine scented candle in the center. A wooden bowl of water set before the fire, at its twelve o’clock sat a small bowl of coal, at two sat a bowl with dandelion fluff, at four sat a bowl of fireweed, at eight sat a bowl with small river rocks, and at ten sat an empty bowl balancing an anthame. All was ready. Freyanna motioned Cougar to join her in the center, between the white candle and the fire. “Once we begin, neither of us can leave the sacred circle. We must also stay close. It is the only way I can protect you from the harmful effects of the vortex. Remember what I said to you earlier and all will be well. Do you have any questions before we begin,” she queried. “No. I am only anxious to start and free my friends,” was Cougar’s immediate response. “Okay, but keep in mind that they may already be suffering some soul separation and be both confused and combative. I’ll have to do whatever it takes to keep us safe and spring them free of the Alchemist’s grasp. The Alchemist may even be connected to the trap and sense our presence. Don’t fear her, speak to her, or give her any chance to lock onto your spirit. Keep your mind on your friends and I will deal with the Sorceress.” Taking his hand briefly and squeezing it gently she said, “All will be well.” Cougar’s only response was to nod. His brother warriors were counting on him. Freyanna dropped Cougar’s hand and moved to and lit the yellow candle. There she chanted, “I call to this circle the spirit of Air. Air is the force that fills our lungs and fuels most reactions on the Earth. From birth to death, we depend on your presence. Unseen, unscented, but powerful beyond belief, you drive the winds, fuel the storms, and have the power to destroy. Great spirit of Air come forth and join us here.” As she spoke a stiff whirlwind surrounded the circle, and then settled into a gentle breeze causing the candle to flame higher. Freyanna continued, “Thank you, Air, and welcome to our circle.” Freyanna approached the red candle but did not light it. She sang, “I call to the circle the spirit of Fire. Fire is safety, light, passion, desire. Fire keeps us safe by keeping evil at bay. It grants us light to find our way in the dark. Fire burns bright in the hearts of lovers. Fire keeps us warm. It is the powerful spirit of fire that both cleanses the forests of debris, preparing the soil for rebirth, and can frighten the soul of man with your destructive force. Great Spirit of Fire come forth and join us here.” This time as she spoke, Cougar felt a heat so unbelievable it felt like lava flowing around them. As the candle burst into flame it filled the air with the scent of cinnamon. Freyanna then said, “Thank you, Fire, and welcome to our circle.” Freyanna then continued to the blue candle in the West and lit its wick, before chanting, “I call to the circle the spirit of Water. Water the source and sustenance of life. From womb to grave, we rely on you. You cleanse, caress, buffer, and aid us in so many ways. Most of the Earth is covered in your precious waters. You mold the very Earth, the rock upon which we stand. Your power is magnificent. Your motion creates clean, sustainable energy mankind can harvest. Your floods reshape the contour of the land. Creative and destructive, yet essential to life, that is the spirit of Water. Great Spirit of Water come forth and join us here.” Cougar was not totally surprised when as Freyanna sang the sound of waves crashing on a shore filled the night. The candle began to wave back and forth like a wave as the scent of oceans joined the assemblage. Freyanna softly greeted the newest spirit, “Thank you, Water, and welcome to our circle.” Moving on and lighting the northern candle, Freyanna recited, “I call to the circle the spirit of Earth. Earth is the mother, the building block, the clay from which we are formed. You bring forth harvests that feed and fuel us. You form the foundations upon which we build. Your power to create is only rivaled by your power to destroy. Earthquakes, cave-ins, land-slides, are all manifestations of your power and your innate ability to work with the other spirits. Great Spirit of Earth come forth and join us here.” Cougar’s senses reeled as the earth itself seemed to move and the scent of fresh turned fields and the pine scent of the candle filled the air. Freyanna welcomed, “Thank you, Earth, and welcome to our circle.” Freyanna then moved back to his side, faced the last candle, and lit it before hailing the last spirit. She softly sang like crooning a lullaby, “I call to this circle the Spirit of Life itself, Spirit. Every creature, every plant, every element contains your indelible force. The Spirit is the divine spark of life itself. You are neither good nor evil, but potential. You are the soul and seat of consciousness. Great Spirit of Life, Spirit, come forth and join us here.” A sense of peace, wholeness, and oneness gently settled over the circle. And with a flourish of joy, Freyanna called, “Thank you, Spirit, and welcome to our circle.” With the closing of the circle the air seemed to hum with the spark of power. A dome of white blue light formed around the circle Cougar had set earlier. He and Freyanna turned toward the central fire; she smiled up at him and winked as she rubbed her hands together. Freyanna finally understood what her mother meant by saying sacred circles on Earth were special. The power practically flowed over her skin, tickling as it bounced along. She knelt before the fire and Cougar joined her. She bowed her head and focused on her breathing, trying to contain the power surging along her body. At last she held her hands over the bowl of water and chanted, “Spirits of the Earth and Sky, come to me, hear my cry. Spirit of Life, Fire, and Water, come to me, and aid your daughter. Power of the Sun, Stars and Moon, harken to me, grant this boon.” Freyanna lifted the bowl of coal over the water and continued, “Coal is a rock, part of this earth. It purifies, it burns, and it symbolizes Earth. Ground us as we summon forth the Alchemists’ spirit trap.” She poured the coal into the bowl then lifted the bowl of dandelion fluff and said, “Dandelions use Air to transport their seeds. A gentle puff of air can send the seeds winging on their way and symbolize Air. Air; help us to travel into the Alchemist’s trap. Keep our steps light that none will know of our presence until we find those we seek.” Freyanna carefully sprinkled the dandelions fluff into the bowl and then lifted the fireweed over the bowl before continuing, “Fireweed is named after the flames it resembles, but as a willow herb, it has healing attributes. Fire is often used to heal and often to protect. Therefore, fireweed symbolizes Fire. As we search the vortex for the lost warriors, protect us, lend us your ability to heal and if necessary harm.” She then added the fireweed to the bowl, picked up the bowl of river rocks, and resumed her chant, “these rocks from the river have been battered smooth by the waters ceaseless motion. In life, we must continue on our path as well. Even when we are buffeted about, like these stones, we become something beautiful. Thus, these rocks symbolize the power of water and we ask your aid in our quest.” Freyanna gently placed the stones into the bowl, so as not to splash any of the mixture, then lifted the anthame in her right hand, before she chanted, “the Spirit of Life is best symbolized by the blood, for it is the blood that sustains life. When it ceases to flow, life ends. We add blood of a Breed Warrior to our mix for it is his brother warriors we seek to save from the Alchemist’s trap.” Lifting Cougar’s left hand, placing it over the bowl, and slicing across the palm Freyanna allowed the blood to drop freely into the bowl as she said, “May the blood of this Warrior aid us in finding and retrieving the missing.” She then used the same anthame to cut across her palm and drip her blood into the bowl and continued, “May the addition of my blood add power to this invocation, protect us, and grant us success.” She lifted the bowl before her and chanted, “Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Spirit, combine your powers and grant our plea. As I will, so mote it be.” She then threw the bowl, contents and all, into the central fire. The flame immediately began to glow purple, then blaze pure white. The Anthame was cleaned by the fire and light radiated from all within the sacred circle. Glancing back at Cougar, Freyanna said, “Now the hard part begins.” She lifted her arms to the moon above as Cougar placed his hand on her waist. Cougar’s mind raced at the amazing events that had already occurred and wondered at how Freyanna could call what had preceded the easy part. Of course who was he to judge?Freyanna closed her eyes and concentrated her powers as she searched the realms of existence for the thread of the Alchemist’s trap. Locating it, she concentrated on opening a portal into the spirit trap. She and Cougar seemed to float into the portal and once inside, Freyanna promptly closed the portal. After all there were some things in the dark that belonged there. She turned to Cougar and said, “Focus on your bond to your fellow warriors. Use your telepathic voice to call them to you. Once you have a feel for them, I’ll use your connection to lead us to them.”
Cougar nodded, closed his eyes, and searched with his Breed senses for his brethren. When he thought he felt them, he called to them psychically, Tig, Talon, its Cougar. If you can hear me, talk to me. Help me find you. He waited and continued to delve deeper into the connection and his bond. Freyanna allowed her sense of the Lunarian blood to guide them deeper into the dark snare. Cougar called out again, Guys; you’ve got to answer me. I can’t see a thing, but I know you’re here. I feel you through our bond. We’ve come to help you. Talk to me. Again he waited, but this time he heard Tig respond weakly, Bro we’re not alone in here. There’s at least one demon I know of. Cougar nearly yelled out in joy and relief when Tig replied, but caught himself. He squeezed Freyanna’s hand as he sent back the message; we’re on our way, Tig. Don’t worry about the demon. This lovely lady and I will be there shortly. Keep talking to me so we can follow the thread. Tig instantly responded, if you really are Cougar, you know what I need to know without me even asking. Cougar didn’t hesitate to tell him, Bronx is fine and unhurt. She misses you terribly for some reason. She was the first to know you were still alive. Freyanna nodded that she had a lock on Tig as he sent back; I don’t know how you found me. Talon and I were separated. I haven’t found him or heard from him. I know he’s here…Uh, buddy, I’m in pretty bad shape between the fight and the Demon. Talon was even worse. We can’t leave him. Cougar reassured his friend, we won’t leave anyone behind. Cougar felt himself floating closer and closer to Talon. The connection was getting stronger by the second. Soon Tig asked, please tell me that is you with the really big flashlight getting closer. Cougar quipped, No, it’s a train and you’re standing on the track. Of course it’s me and a new friend. We see you. Tig response was accompanied with a sigh, thank the gods. I’m tired. Cougar had no more reached out to grab Tig’s arm than the warrior collapsed. Freyanna knelt by his side as Cougar psychically called to his friend. Freyanna quickly checked Tig for injuries forcing healing energy into the wounds she found then she sought deeper and checked his animal spirit. The Tiger was uninjured, but definitely pissed. “Your friend is fine, but you will have to support him. Since the one you called Talon has not responded, you will have to focus everything on sensing your bond and I will search for any trace of Lunarian blood.” Cougar nodded again. Focusing on Talon, while supporting an unconscious Tig, was not easy. He was afraid his fear for Talon would cause him to overlook the thread of their bond. Freyanna took Tig from him, gently laying Tig at their feet and said, “Clear your mind. Fear is the weapon of the enemy. Focus on Talon. See him in your mind. Hear his voice. Feel the strength of the bond when he clasps your arm in greeting. Now look within and feel that tie that is unique to Talon. Pull it. Point the way.” As Freyanna’s voice guided him, Cougar relaxed and soon found the thread. He pulled, and then pointed left. Picking up and supporting Tig, they floated towards where Cougar felt Talon. The Demon came out of nowhere. It hit an invisible shield of power and screamed in pain. Freyanna said, “Well, if the Alchemist is tied to the trap, she’ll know we’re here now.” They began to float quicker. Soon, the crumpled bleeding form of Talon came into sight. Great Goddess thought Cougar! There was so much blood. Skin hung off his skeleton in places. Talon was curled into a fetal position as if he had tried to protect himself. All Cougar could think was, how could anyone suffer wounds like that and still live. Freyanna knelt beside the fallen warrior, she sensed he still lived somehow and reached out gently to touch him. “Touch the Lunarian and die” said a woman’s harsh voice. “You are in my trap and will never leave. All who enter here are mine. I will not let him go.” Freyanna knew from where the voice came from and using a wisp of her magic forced the speaker to use valuable power to form a material representation of herself in the spirit trap. “This is your welcome, Misery,” Freyannacrooned. “I can’t say I care for the décor or how you treat your quests.” Freyanna pivoted to face the Sorceress and place herself between the Alchemist and the Breeds. “How do you know me,” Misery queried. “Oh! I know you are an Alchemist Sorceress who sold her soul to Shatan, created this lovely trap, and managed to piss off the gods. I should formally inform you that you, Misery, Sorceress of the Alchemist, stand accused of high treason against the universe and the powers thereof, and that as a representative of said powers and given the evidence of the severity of your treason, it is within my powers to sentence you to death. The sentence will be carried out at my earliest convenience, and just so you know, you can’t hide from me.” Misery flung a bolt of black power at Freyanna, but it bounced harmlessly off the force field into the dark. Freyanna shook her head and said, “Pathetic.” She then threw a small quarter sized orb at the sorceress, who immediately burst into innumerable small pieces.” She quickly placed a hand over Cougar’s stunned mouth as he prepared to congratulate her on the sorceress’ demise. “She is not dead yet. Only her essence in this realm is destroyed. We must hurry now. She may not have been burned by my flare where her body existed on Earth and might try to seal the trap.” With that she placed one hand on Talon’s hand, sought out his spirit and his animal spirit to insure their survival, and wrapped her cloak over him. With one hand on Cougar, who supported the unconscious form of Tig, and her other on Talon, she willed the portal open and whisked them through, slamming it shut just as the Demon tried to come through. Safe at last, they crumpled to the ground. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
