Looking back on it, I see now that it was that moment when her eyes bored into mine that inextricably linked me to her as I had linked her to me. Something in her eyes that pictures on Facebook could not convey.
It was her soul.
I'd never encountered a mortal with a soul such as hers. It was old, but fresh at the same time. It was like that moment of deja vu when a tingle goes down your spine, and you realized you've seen this moment before. Seen it, but not experienced it.
Her soul was utterly fascinating.
After that moment, Joana saved her place and closed the book she was reading. The Count of Monte Cristo, my favorite work of Alexandre Dumas. Gods, she was exquisite. I felt like she was put into this plane of existence solely for my use.
Her voice brought me out of my thoughts.
"I'm Jo."
"Jo what?"
She fixed a feisty glare on me. I feel my pants tighten. Oh, she would get it. Soon.
"Joana Nicolino."
I smirked into my coffee and resisted the urge to tell her I knew that. I didn't think she'd bolt, per say, but I didn't want my mortal to start off suspicious. I wanted her to let me in.
"Pleased to make your acquaintance, Joana Nicolino. Could I see your book?"
She nodded and reached for her cup of hot chocolate, and I pulled her hard cover to my side of the table.
She'd had this copy for awhile, I decided. I could feel the age in the paper. Her scent lingered throughout it's pages. This book had lived with her, moved with her. Settled in her little hands.
I was suddenly envious of this fucking thing.
"I've seen you," she said, and I looked up to realize she had had her gaze fixed on me while I tried to steal her life from the pages of the novel. My eyebrow twitched and I gave her a bit of a smile.
I knew I looked good to her. I could almost hear the fantasies unfurling in her subconscious. That was my domain, after all.
"Have you, now? I asked quietly.
"For the last few months, actually." Her eyes were boring into mine, willing me to answer some question she couldn't quite put to words. I knew she would find them, she was most eloquent. "I've seen your face everywhere. In my dreams, especially. Even in a few of my..." She trailed off, realizing she might sound slightly strange if she kept along that train of thought. I gritted my teeth as I silently willed her to continue, to pour her thoughts out for me so I could possess even her mind. As I continued to meet her gaze, her eyes once again captivated me. When I had first presented myself to her, they were were cobalt blue, almost. Now there were a piercing gray, the color of the moon through storm clouds. Breathtaking, really.
"In your dreams, hmm? I thought it was I who was supposed to lay down pick up lines?" Her eyebrows raised incrementally, as if she was surprised by my gall or something. What, did she not appreciate my hitting on her? It should have been obvious when I sat at her table that I was interested, I mean, there were only three other people in the entire place.
Jo sat up straighter and put her cup down. "Now that I see you in person, I've seen you other places, too. In corners in my office, on the fire escape outside my window, in the dark around me wherever I go. And I know I'm not insane, so why don't you tell me who the fuck you are and what you want with me Nico di Angelo?"
The temperature dropped. Shadows reached out from corners until we were alone in the darkness, the only sounds were Jo's deep breaths. Her eyes grew large as I assumed a visage closer to my true form.
"I am Nico, god of Nightmare and Fantasy, son of Hades, god of the Underworld. You have dreamed of me because I made it so. I have followed you through shadow. You are alive because it pleases me. Make no mistake, you are mine. I will possess you in ways you cannot begin to fathom. It would do you well, Joana, to keep your temper when addressing me."
She fainted.
Okay, so I laid on the power a bit thick. But can you really blame me? The girl had no restraint! And how did she see me these last few months, even when I had been wreathed in darkness? It was troubling. No one had ever sensed me before, not even when I was a demigod. Joana Nicolino was unique. She was rare. Her secrets would be bared to me just as her body and soul would soon be bared to me. And as I told her, she was mine the moment she was named.
Still hidden in shadow from the other patrons of the coffee shop, I gathered her things and put them in her bag. She was slumped in her chair, her eyes softly shut, hair obscuring part of her pale face. Paler than usual. My brow furrowed. I had revealed myself to her. Obviously the Mist was lost on this particular mortal. I had no other choice, really.
I wrapped my arms around her soft body, slung her bag over my shoulder, and stepped into shadow.
I would keep her. Joana Nicolino was officially in my possession. Thoughts of the deeds I would perform on her short frame went unbidden in my mind. This is why I was made the god of Fantasy. As soon as I had one, I ensured it became reality at any cost. Force of habit, I suppose.
These particular fantasies, however, would be most indulgently fulfilled.
Miss Nicolino was mine. And now that I had her, I would never let her get away from me.
