Okay, so for those of you that will inevitably have questions: Yes, I know this went from narrative to first person. It was intentional. I am also trying to keep Anita and the characters cannon while tossing in Catherine. Reviews are nice too!
Anita
A hand came through a pile of what appeared to be mud. It was followed closely bu a second. Both hands then pulled, finding a purchase on the mud around them and then a head came into view. My browning was trained on the mud as a face was revealed. That was not a zombie. Nicky had been right to come and get me.
After the face, a torso came out of the mud. It if hadn't been for the rain, i might not have gotten to see this person, this woman coming onto my property before I shot her, or the guards did.
"Who are you? What are you doing on my property?"
"Let me get out of here before you shoot me," she said in a relatively low, silky voice that seemed strained around the edges. She then pulled the rest of herself out of the mud.
"Be glad I haven't shot you yet," I replied.
"As a U.S. Marshall dealing with an invader on your property you'd be well within your rights Ms. Blake." Oh, so she knew me. Well wasn't that just peachy. I had some not zombie woman escaping the clutches of a mud puddle in my backyard who knew my name. If I didn't already know my luck, I might ask myself what else was going to happen, but my luck was pretty shitty in that department so I left it alone. It was in those few moments that Nicky, my bodyguard and a werelion stepped up to my side. I wanted to lean into him for a second, just to make sure he was alright after having changed back so quickly but there was an enemy in our backyard so, being cuddly would most certainly have to wait.
Nicky wasn't just a bodyguard. He was one of my live in sweeties, my Bride-- just like Dracula had Brides. I'd recently gotten around to calling him a Groom since he was a dude. A few years ago I'd rolled Nicky completely with my arduar because it was the only way to save Nathaniel, one of my other live in sweeties, and myself. Nicky had been given orders to kill us all by his former Rex, the leader of the local lion Pride.
"Catherine," Nicky said as he bent down towards the intruder. She had one arm around her middle and was kneeling in the mud, staring at the ground. It was then that I noticed under the smell of freshly wet earth, rain and wet lycanthrope that I could smell blood and a lot of it.
"You know her Nicky?"
"She helped me in the past," he told me.
"Helped how?" I made it a question instead of an order because I wanted to give him the choice to answer. As a Bri-Groom he had no free will so to speak when it came to following any command I gave to him. Was I sorry for rolling his mind and taking away all of his free will? No. Was I feeling a little guilty? Yes. And I would do it again if it meant saving the others.
"We did some jobs together. There were a few times that our bosses pitted us against one another to see who was faster and better," the woman named Catherine said. I looked at Nicky and he nodded. I turned and looked at her.
"What do you want?"
"May I stand?" She turned her head up to me and the color of her eyes forced a gasp out of me. The sclera was completely black and the iris was a dazzling shade of silver and blue. There was no pupil, just a pool of bright, deep blue. I just nodded, my mouth still partially open but even if I was a bit shocked, my gun stayed trained on her head.
She stood, very slowly and with some effort. In mid rise, she doubled over and caught herself by throwing out her other hand for balance. Nicky turned and looked at me. I looked at him. he looked as if he wanted to help her.
"I'm alright Nick." That wasn't the first time I heard someone call hjim that. I didn't know how I felt about it. Catherine stood up straight, no look of pain on her face as she looked me straight in the eye.
"You asked why I am here Anita Blake." She paused and took a deep breath. "I'm here to save the Queen." And then she effectively passed out. If I hadn't caught her, she'd have fallen right into me and slid to the ground. When I caught her, I noticed how light she was. Even if I didn't have super strength, she would have been very light.
"Nicky, call Claudia and have her make a room over at the Circus. Then call Doctor Lillian."
"No hospital suggestion?" Nicky was fishing around in my pocket for my cell phone.
"Nicky, she clawed herself up from the mud like a zombie but she is definitely NOT a zombie. Obviously she is not going to the hospital. besides, there are more guards with guns at the Circus."
"And your main sweeties will be out of the line of fire."
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too." He walked away and made the call. Was he upset? I hated that he only got my feelings and I couldn't get his. It made for a seriously one sided relationship, even if he didn't seem to mind.
I needed to move enough to shove my browning into the back holster I was wearing and then grab Catherine fully. I picked her up bridal style and walked towards Nicky. As I walked, I looked over this stranger in my arms. Through what little bit of the moon was peeking out of the scattering of clouds, I could see that her hair was red. it was pulled tight up on top of her head in a braided bun. Almost elegantly if not for the mud. Her face was pale, eyes large, nose small and slightly upturned and her lips were full. She had a scattering of freckles across the bridge of her nose and cheeks. Her face was soft and round, and on the edge of her chin to the left side, she had a small downward facing scar. She was about my height and weighed maybe twenty or so pounds less than I did. Her cleavage, from what I could see through the huge, almost man sized shirt, was just as big as mine. While I wasn't a lesbian I could certainly appreciate a fine looking female. This one, even covered in mud and blood and rain, was definitely good looking.
"The car is ready. I put down some tarp to help keep it from getting dirty." I nodded to Nicky and continued walking towards the driveway. Nicky walked up behind me and slid the phone into my pocket.
"Is she dangerous Nicky?"
"She almost killed me six times during our encounters." Wrong Question.
"Is she going to hurt us?"
"She said she was here to save the Queen. I assume she isn't here to hurt anyone on our side. Ask her when she wakes up."
"I know this is going to be a stupid question, but who is the Queen?"
"Anita, there is only one Queen here in the United Stated and that's you."
"So she randomly pops up like a daisy in the backyard of our home to say she's here to protect me? Why not just call?"
"When she wakes up Anita you can ask her all of these questions." Nicky let out a small chuckle and I felt myself blushing.
"Will she answer? Or rather, will she answer truthfully?" I asked while sliding her into the backseat.
"In the times we worked together she has never lied to me. I don't feel she needs too."
A little while later we were at the Circus. Claudia met us at the door with Richard, Lessandro and Wicked. Apparently Truth was busy and couldn't get away for the moment. Four guards plus me and Nicky was good enough. When we got her to the room that had been prepared for her, Doc Lillian was there with her bag and gloves. I nodded at her and she nodded at me. Then we got to work stripping our new guest and setting her on the bed.
"Well then," Lillian said as she stared down at pale flesh covered only in a bra and panties. "It looks like she was almost cut in half Anita."
"What?" I stepped over and looked down.
"The rate of healing is astronomical. I can see her knitting back together as I'm talking to you. This kind of healing is greater than any shifter I've ever seen." Lillian started cleaning parts of the cut.
"She shouldn't have survived a wound that grave," I muttered.
"This one doesn't smell like anything I've ever been around Anita. She's not a lycanthrope, not a vampire and definitely not human."
"Then what the hell is she?"
"I don't know. You should ask Jean-Claude."
"Anita, are you sure it's wise keeping her here?" Richard asked from behind us.
"Like I told Nicky, there are more people with guns here. She said she was here to save the Queen."
"Who's the Queen?" He asked.
"Apparently that's me." He shook his head and walked out of the room. Wicked looked at me and I nodded. Nicky followed the vampire out. Lillian collected her materials and patted my shoulder.
"Anytime you need me," she said on her way out.
"Thank you Doctor Lillian." The door shut behind Claudia, Lessandro and I. "Claudia, when she wakes up bring her to me. Lessandro, please rotate with Claudia over guard duty until she comes around." They nodded and I left the room heading to find Jean-Claude my vampire lover.
Catherine
-Something warm was laying across my legs. Due to my training, my breathing and heart rate didn't change letting whoever was in the room with me know I was awake. So when I cracked open an eye, the occupant standing at the side of the bed looked a little shocked. I looked at my legs, by that point having both eyes open.
"My name is Jason. Nice to meet you." He had sleepy eyes and openly yawned. "Are you hungry?" I tilted my head and plastered a very well practiced smile on my face. it even reached my eyes. I gave off an air of harmlessness.
"Actually I'm famished. Please inform your master that I am thankful for his assistance."
"Oh you can tell him." Jason gave a beaming smile. "Anita wanted to know when you woke up so my master invited you to breakfast." My smile stayed pleasing as I looked up at the rooms other occupant. A big, blonde female stood there. She was very muscular, but softer than a man would have been. She was quite beautiful. She was also packing some serious heat in the weapons department. The feel of her suggested at least three guns and quite a few blades, some of which made from silver if the smell was anything to go by.
"I'm Claudia. If you can walk, come on." I nodded, the smiling falling off my face as the man named Jason moved off of my legs and I slid out of the bed I had been in to stand. With a slight stretch, hearing bones crack almost as if they were breaking -but they weren't- I walked up next to the woman and nodded for her to proceed me. She shook her head in response and waved an arm, almost in a gentlemanly fashion and I walked out of the door.
Even if I hadn't taken time to study the room, knew what was in there. It was a full size bed covered in soft, possibly silk sheets. It sat on a wooden sleigh frame and there was a matching dresser to the side. A light had been installed at some point. The walls were dark in color, a deep purple. Nothing in the room could have been used as an immediate weapon, not without some breaking.
"How long was I out?"
"Two days. You were fully healed after five hours."
"I must have used more energy than I thought," I said softly.
"Doing what?"
"Breaking out of prison." Claudia stopped and looked at me. Really looked at me. I stared back blankly. There was no reason for me to try and hide behind a smile I would never mean, and Jason wasn't here. She shook her head and nodded that I continue forward. I just continued walking. Usually, I didn't like people at my back. I'd killed for less in the past. But my mission was just that imperative. Besides, she seemed competent in a fight.
When Claudia finally made a noise for me to stop, we were standing at a door that was being guarded by two men. One was in a black tee and one was in a red tee. The one in the red tee wasn't armed with a gun. Curious. One of the men knocked on the door and there was a hard "Come in" that was very obviously from Anita Blake. She sounded like she was eating.
The man who knocked issued me to enter. I believe he would have attempted to frisk search me but I was still almost nude and being frisked when in panties and a bra didn't leave much to the imagination. I stepped beyond the door to a room of six people. Four were vampires, one was Anita Blake and one was the local Ulfric. Claudia followed inside the room with me. I let her take whatever place she wished behind me before fully entering.
"You already know me. This is my Master Jean-Claude and that is Richard Zeeman the local packs Ulfric." I nodded respectively to both men that had been introduced but eyed the vampires behind the large desk. They were old. The way they stood suggested capability in both hand to hand and with ranged weapons even though neither of them wore guns. "Those two are Wicked and Truth, our guards," Anita Blake followed up when she saw me staring.
"My apologies for coming on such short notice Ms Anita Blake." I eyed the cup she was bringing to her lips.
"Coffee is there." She pointed to a tray displayed with food and drinks. I walked over and poured myself a cup after putting a very liberal amount of cream and sugar in it. She made a gag sound and the wolf on the couch at my back chuckled a bit. Jean-Claude voiced a question to her that I ignored because it was impolite to listen in to others conversations unless you were told too or invited.
"Why is it that you have joined us Ms..." Jean-Claude spoke. Ah yes, Master of the City. It would be rude to just simply deal with Anita Blake.
"Catherine Macullum." I turned and gave him my best impression of a genuine smile. Of course I didn't mean it. It never did. "If you have your guards search me you will find nothing. I am not in any database anywhere." I walked back over and stood in front of the desk, far enough away to make both of them comfortable. "As for why I am here, I have given my reasons to Ms Anita Blake."
"Just Anita," she said with a bit of a bite in her tone. I nodded to her.
"Anita then." I took a sip of my coffee and looked down at the mug. Not enough sugar. Sad. "I came because I know of a plot to kill Anita and end the Reign of the last Dead Queen."
"Dead Queen?" Anita was genuinely confused.
"You control the dead, raise them if necessary and are capable of many other things. Your powers speak of the Queen you killed and have sailed beyond enough that you have become a threat. There are those who do not want you to fully grasp what you have at your disposal."
"How do you know about-"
"She was never a thread to me or my former employer so we left her alone. None of them were. And then you came along. He has known about you since you were five." She looked away from me, trying to absorb the information.
"Who is 'We'?" This from the man on the couch.
"His name is Tollus." I looked at the floor for a moment, rolling the name on my tongue. I then turned back to Anita and Jean-Claude. "I know of the plot to end you and your power because I was supposed to kill you myself however, I am instead here seeking asylum and in return, I will protect you from Tollus and his demons."
"Wait, you were supposed to kill me and now you want to protect me? Demons? What did I ever do to this prick?"
"You did nothing but come into your powers. Your powers upset the balance Anita. You control everything that is dead and can control everything that lives with your ardeur. You have shown that many times. As for killing you, I have always wanted to protect you." My voice dropped a little as images flashed before my eyes. It took a moment for me to collect myself.
"You have always wanted to protect me?"
"Before Nick was hired to kill you and your lovers the option was presented to Tollus. He declined because I spent twelve days at his hands to make sure I didn't have to end your life." Everyone stopped doing anything, even breathing for a moment.
"You make it sound like it was a bad thing?" This from Richard.
"Torture is a bad thing from what I am told Mr. Zeeman." I let a little of my power shift the room, holding my coffee cup in one hand and holding up the other in submission. He gasped and Claudia dry heaved. My power faded and I went back to standing there, drinking my not sweet enough coffee. "That was two days and several objects I cannot name. I know the names to a lot of things but not the implements used during that session." I looked back to Anita. "If you will allow me Anita, I would very much like to protect you."
"How do I know you won't kill me, kill Us?" She looked around the room.
"Blood oathing works just as well with me, if not better." Jean-Claude sat up a little straighter, forcing Anita too as well.
"Blood Oath. You are not a vampire nor are you a shifter."
"I have vampire-like tendencies but the blood oathing is older than even vampires Jean-Claude. Many creatures through the millennia have used it as a way to ensure loyalty."
"What are you?" He asked me seriously.
"A genetically manipulated Elemental."
"Elemental?" Anita looked confused.
"There are many ten of us in the world Anita. Two were slaughtered to get me when I was a baby. From there Tollus played with my DNA, manipulating it in such a way that I am now...better." I said the last part with a little disgust.
"But after you're born you can't work with genetics."
"When you aren't human and didn't start off that way, anything is possible. My healing factor did quite a number to help Tollus in his research."
"What is he?" Richard asked.
"A demon who was banished from hell. He feeds on energy. Magical, metaphysical it doesn't matter."
"Oh dear," muttered Jean-Claude.
"I will give you time to discuss this amongst yourselves. if you don't mind Anita, I would very much like to go back and cuddle with the little wolf left in my room." I could feel three sets of eyes damn near burn holes in my skull. I held up my hands again. "I am sure Nick told you that I react just as a shifter does to skin contact. I am a creature of the earth Anita." I shifted the hand not holding a coffee cup into a claw and back. It was much, much smoother than a lycanthrope. "I beg your leave." I bowed to her. She waved me out. I got to the door and paused. "Anita?"
"Hm?"
"Thank you." I then left.
