A/N: Idea for the stake and the relief for the darkness in Lissa was taken from bluegoldrose on Archive of Our Own, with a few personal tweaks to it. You can find this idea and her full story on AO3, titled “Everyday Moments”. It’s really good; totally check her out!
“Well, we should at least write your mother and sisters a letter,” I said, sitting on the couch with Dimitri in our apartment at court. The TV was playing some 80s music-the good stuff, like AC/DC, and Journey, even Abba (hey, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia are good), and we were discussing how to tell people that we were having a baby.
“My mother is going to equate ‘baby’ with ‘marriage’, and will bring my sisters, my nieces and nephews and Yeva. Not to mention she will tell Mark and Oksana.” He looked at me with a sly grin. He knew how I felt about Yeva. She will claim she saw this pregnancy for us. He laughed when I rolled my eyes.
“We should definitely write a letter to Mark and Oksana. Maybe they have heard of this before, or know how to explain it, because we know that other Dhampirs will want to know how to have the same chance we are now.” I laid my hand on my lower abdomen, stroking in a circle.
“But, we tell Christian and Lissa first. And I will be asking for paternity leave for sure. I will be there for the first few weeks a least after you have the baby.” He kissed me and got up to stretch. “Both of them will be back in a few hours, so I’m going to go study. You should too, or go lay down and nap. You look exhausted.”
“A nap sounds great, actually. But, I think I’m going to stay here.” I stretched out on the couch and grabbed the blanket off the back, and draped it over myself. “Wake me up when they come home?”
“What?!” Lissa squealed in her excitement when I told her. “You’re pregnant?! Wait, does Dimitri know?”
“Yes, he does. The baby is his.” Lissa looked so confused, I couldn’t help but grin. “Dr. Olendzki thinks that when you healed me after the accident and when you brought Dimitri back to us, you healed that weird part that kept us from having children together, which is weird that we would need to be healed for that; we are literally the same species.”
“I mean, I never really thought about it like that. But, you’re right.” She nodded, a thoughtful expression on her face. “Oh, i wanted to tell you; I found a way to get rid of the darkness in me that benefits everyone! Can I see your stake?”
“Oooo-kay?” I got up and got my stake out of the hidden pouch in my jacket and handed it to her. She closed her eyes and mouthed something, her hands around the middle and the handle of the stake. The carvings in the metal started glowing like someone heated it up white hot. Her eyes opened, and they were completely black, the iris and the sclera. And then the blackness flowed from her eyes, down her cheeks, neck, arms and flowed into the stake, and where the white had been, turned black. The black sunk in and made the stake look worn in the carvings, but made it look hella cool.
“Now, when you strike, you can heavily stun the Strigoi, and if they are a newly turned, you may even be able to kill them even if you miss the heart.” She sounded so proud of herself. “It was Mia’s idea, in a way. She said that when she’s sad or angry, she channels those emotions into her defensive magic, and since I can’t hurt people myself, why not add another layer of enchantments that will help diminish the darkness!?”
It was really ingenious. I took my stake and held it. “Thank you, Lissa, and that is totally fucking awesome.” I hugged her, which if you know me, I don't usually initiate hugs, but this was hug-worthy. “Now, how do I tell my parents?”
“Well, both your parents are pretty straight forward people, so if you just tell them like it is, I can imagine they should take it ok. I mean, they may want to try and strangle you both.” She laughed. “But, seriously; don’t put it off, just tell them and if they can’t accept it, I will step in.”
“I mean, that’s better than what I had planned; just run away.” I shrugged.
Dimitri and Christian came into the room and Christian had a shit-eating grin on his face. “So, you, a mom… I can’t see it.” He sat down next to Lissa and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “You just don’t seem like the mom type.”
“I disagree; you never saw Rose when these two were on the run.” Dimitri walked over and sat down next to me, and pulled me onto his lap. He was more open to PDA around Lissa and Christian. “Here she was, this 16 year old girl, weak and disoriented from blood loss, and still willing to give her life to protect Lissa. And now that that same girl is older and even more deadly. She’s got this.”
The smile on Lissa’s face was so wide it hurt my cheeks even without the bond. “OK, enough of the sappy. We need to call my parents over; we’re just gonna rip off the bandaid and tell them. Who knows? Maybe Abe will help pay for your family to come over to America for an extended stay?”
Lissa and Christian said their goodbyes while I made the call to my mother’s cell phone. Within 5 minutes, they were there. “Hey, Mom. Dad.” I hugged both of them.
“Hello, Rose,” my mother said. “What did you do now?”
“What makes you think I did something?”
“You hugged us,” Abe stated flatly. “Now, why don't we all sit down for this discussion.”
We all sat, my parents with each other and Dimitri next to me. I started talking after about 30 seconds of awkward silence and staring. “So, you know how I died in the car accident and Lissa healed me? And how she healed Dimitri of his being Strigoi? Well, it may have healed something else in out genome, that shouldn’t have needed healing, i mean we are the same species, so it just doesn’t makes sense. But anyways, surprise, I’m pregnant, you're gonna be grandparents.” It was like, as soon as the first word can out of my mouth, I couldn’t stop until I said the whole thing in rapid diarrhea of the mouth.
My parents looked at me blankly and Dimitri summed up what I said in as few words as possible. “Rose is trying to say it seems Lissa may have healed the part of us that made it impossible to have children together. Rose is pregnant, and the baby is mine.”
My father nodded slowly. “Ok, so you’re gonna get married, right?” He looked at Dimitri sternly. “You will make an honest woman of my daughter.”
“Whoa!” I broke in. “That is not for you to decide! I understand that you are old fashioned but that doesn’t mean that we have to get married, just because I’m pregnant. You didn’t marry my mother!”
“Well, he tried. But I didn’t let him. Besides, I’m a Dhampir, he’s a Moroi. It just isn’t seemly; not unheard of, but not seemly.” My mother looked at Dimitri. “You love her, right?”
“With all my heart and soul.” He responded without hesitation. “And I already love that child, be it boy or girl.”
I looked between them all. “You do realize this is my choice too? What if I dont want to get hitched?”
Dimitri looked at me, and I could see that what I had said hurt him, but then I saw the flash of understanding. I didn’t want to get married if they were going to pressure us into it. I wanted it to be for us, when we felt the time was right. I loved him, but even he couldn’t order me around all the time.
“Rose, this isn’t for you. It’s for your baby.” Abe looked at me, glancing down to my still flat stomach. “That’s the one thing that I wanted for you. I wanted for you to have my last name, but in the end I listened to your mother because she is the love of my life.”
“I don't want to get married!” I said, crossing my arms. “If you think that that is selfish, then cry me a river, build a bridge and get the hell over it. I won't be forced into something I’m not ready for. I just got him to start allow a bit of PDA. We are still figuring out how to live with each other!! I want marriage to mean something more than to make our child ‘legitimate’. It already is, in my book!”
My father stared at me, and then looked at my mother, like he wanted her to back me up. But she studied Dimitri and I with a thoughtful expression. She leaned back, crossing her arms over her chest. “Well, Rose. It seems you have grown up. I’m proud of you.” She smiled at me warmly before it changed to an impish grin. “I’m gonna be a hot grandma,” she giggled.
“Oh my God, Mom, can you not?!” I said, covering my face. Dimitri belly laughed and it was contagious. Before long, we were all laughing pretty hard.
“Miss. Hathaway,” Professor Gayvoronskaya greeted me as I was getting up from my seat in the front row of her classroom. Our lesson had just finished and it was my last class before I went to lunch. “Are you feeling better, my dear?” She smiled warmly at me, her blue eyes kind.
“Yes,” I said, dropping back into the seat. “I was having some pretty extreme morning sickness; but my doc got me on some meds to alleviate it.” I sighed as her eyes widened, and the people around me got quiet. “Yeah, so, I’m pregnant. Whoopie.”
“Oh, Rose! Congratulations, my dear! Radost'!!” Her smile was huge, jumping up and down. “You and the father must come to lunch with me sometime! We must celebrate!”
“I’ll bring it up to him. You’ll like him; he's from around St. Petersburg area.”
Her eyes lit up with that. “Really?! Me too! Well, from St. Petersburg actually. Is he helping you with you pronunciation?” She winked at me, her face glowing with happiness.
“He is,” I said, laughing. “He’s hard on me, but its funny how he explains it. He tries to use other Russian words to explain what one means or something like that.”
“Rose?”
“Speak of the Devil, and he shall cometh,” I laughed softly. “I’m down here, Dimka.” I turned to look at him, and froze. His face was tight, and worried. I shot up, slinging my bag over my shoulder, immediately on high alert. “What’s happened?”
“There was a… Oh, hello. You must be Roza’s Russian instructor?” He said, stopping mid sentence as he spotted the redhead behind me. “I’m Dimitri, Rose’s boyfriend.” He walked down the auditorium seating and shook the woman’s hand.
“Otets?” She said, returning the handshake. “Rose told me you grew up near St. Petersburg?”
“Yes, I did.” He said, looking at me with a small, but slightly strained smile. “As much as I would like to talk about home, we have to go. There has been an emergency.” He turned to me and said one word, and that word made my blood run cold, and my hands fold protectively over my lower stomach. “Buria.”
Radost' = Joy
Otets = The father?
Buria = storm (from Shadow Kissed, Chapter 24)
